“THE AVE” ELLERSLIE AFC VS CENTRAL UTD

WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Today we host what can only be referred to as the glamour game of the Lotto NRFL competition - Central in my eyes are the NRFL version of Manchester United, they have struggled in the league recently falling behind rivals Bay Olympic (Chelsea) and East Coast Bays (Man City) but they are strong in the cup and have amazing pedigree. We all know the worst time to face either Man Utd or Central is during a poor run, because they don’t often go too many games without getting a win. So welcome today to Chris and his Central team - we hope you enjoy your first visit back to Michaels Ave for some time and we have no doubt you will be pleasantly surprised by the changes (Someone tell Hoani we have fixed the light above the visiting teams shower please!). We know Central like to play and so do we so we expect to see two great games tonight, first our undefeated reserves defend their home patch, it is awesome to see the ongoing development coming out of these guys and we all can’t wait to see what else Chris Wallace has taught you in the past week. The First team have had a slightly rockier re-introduction to the Premier League and although we sit on 7 points from 5 games we don’t feel we have really played to our full potential yet, so that should be good to see sometime—tonight maybe? After the games have finished up please join us in our clubrooms above the YMCA for a cold drink and some hot food and warm Ellerslie AFC hospitality. Lastly congrats to todays two birthday boys - Captain Eddie Sillars and I guess vice captain Will Roper!! Enjoy guys!

PRESIDENTS REPORT It is my pleasure, on behalf of the Ellerslie Football Club, to extend a warm welcome to our visitors from our fellow NRFL Premier and Reserve Club teams, together with our own Club members and supporters, to our recently completed new facilities at Michaels Avenue Reserve. We trust that you will all enjoy the benefits associated with the completion of Stage 1 of our Reserve’s Redevelopment Plan, and look forward in anticipation to further facilities improvements over the next year or so. A lot of publicity has surrounded Auckland Council’s recent commitment to embark upon a 10 year plan to significantly upgrade field capacities across Auckland, with a prime initiative being the installation of more artificial surfaces. As a Club that has been at the forefront of this , the opportunities that such surfaces present to coaches, players and supporters was brought into stark focus recently when within a number of hours of a typical Auckland tropical downpour, our members were able to continue their training and playing regimes uninterrupted, whilst other Clubs wrestled with the logistics of ground closures etc. The positivity that is now palpable around all aspects of this Club is fantastic to see and feel. The challenge for all of us is how to gain the best value and outcomes for our members from the significant investment both made, and still to be made, in the improvement of our facilities. But ultimately, facilities are only one aspect of this Club’s Strategic Plan and we all have a role to play in identifying ways and means by which our players, coaches and supporters can come together to make this Club, the Club of choice in our region. So, come and get involved. Best wishes to Warren Parke, Chris Wallace, their support staff and players in both the Premiers and Reserves, as they continue on their respective journeys tonight. Kind regards Mark B. Weipers President

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT The trip to Hamilton to face Wanderers was one we looked forward to, as they were sitting high on the table, and with the challenge that presented on a good pitch and a bus trip on top we headed down in good spirits. I was pleased to learn that the referee was down from Auckland as sometimes decisions can be clouded with a local referee when Jaffa teams travel.

The match took on an early high tempo and this continued through to the final whistle. We were struggling a little with our possession statistics early on, but were never really threatened, until a corner was conceded and a driven delivery near post was met very well at pace from a deep runner and the glancing header flew into the goal and became lodged in the net behind the stanchion. It was a very good goal and we did what you do and took it on the chin.

We then set about getting in the game a bit more and showed some real spirit as we did. We frustrated Wanderers, who clearly thought they were in for an easy afternoon, and had them rattled many times as we stretched their back four regularly with our pace.

We went in at half time 0-1 down, but having had Nathan Palmer and Andy Wallace in on goal a few times already were confident we would get something out of the match if not all three points.

We replaced Monju in his midfield role at the break, with Mike Ritchie in his first run with us this season after his long term injury and kept our shape as it was troubling Hamilton. Their midfield was being outworked and were beginning to struggle.

As the game progressed we introduced Dylan Manickum and Warrick Hart and then started knocking loudly on Wanderers door. So no surprises then, when at 75 minutes we scored to even things up. Nathan Palmer timed his run onto a very good ball into the box from Dylan Manickum and showed good strength to belt home high into the net past the impressive Hamilton keeper.

We hammered away over the next 15 minutes and could have gone ahead on a number of occasions, but it was an effort from Warwick Hart that in any other match would have won it for us, which brought out the class of the Wanderers keeper as he pushed Warricks effort away at full stretch. The match finished 1-1 and was real entertainment. Sean Dowling in our goal was strong in all areas and the back four of Gregg Crestenallo, Ahmed Al Jawad, Ollie Mullane and Callum Brown all deserve recognition for not only good individual performance but while troubled on occasion from Hamilton worked tire-

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT

Hamilton scoring their goal from a corner kick lessly to press and get players behind the ball showing real qualities as a unit. Ollie picked up our MOM.

Our Midfield worked hard and moved the ball well as Wanderers pressed us hard but this caused our opponents to lose their shape and become unbalanced, giving us more possession. They tired badly as we finished stronger than them and were probably glad to hear the final whistle and settle for a point.

Well done to both squads, who looked and behaved like Premier players with a Premier league club.

This was a good day for us and if we continue to make the improvements we need to, then there are many more good days to look forward to.

Kind Regards

Warren Parke - First Team Coach

RESERVES REPORT Sat May 4th took us to the Waikato to play Hamilton Wanderers at Porritt Stadium and as they were currently sitting in 1st place equal with us we were expecting our toughest game of the season. While the trip down was fine it had rained over night so we had been bumped off the main stadium pitch which was like a carpet onto #4 which could only be described as a paddock. However it was the same for both teams and from the get go was a fascinating and competitive game. We started well knocking the ball around and generally felt in control of the game however 10 – 15 minutes in, we conceded a penalty following a ball to hand shot on the top edge of the penalty box which looked to be heading upwards over the goal. The 0-1 score line remained until about the 85th minute when Freddie Ljungberg scored a fortunate goal after a corner clearance was poorly executed. Up until this point, there was very little between the two teams. Ellerslie were more comfortable with their passing game retaining possession for long periods but were unable to finish a number of promising moves. On the other hand Hamilton had a number of tricky players who liked taking us on and were unlucky not to have score from a couple of quick counter attacks. With the score at 1-1 and 10 mins to go including injury time the game came alive. Freddie was unlucky not to have scored when his powerful and well struck left foot volley was expertly saved by the Wanderers goalkeeper. Had we been more awake and followed the shot in we could have converted the keepers save but not to be and he re-gathered. Waikato too attacked with gusto but our defences which had been solid all game held and the game finished at 1 all and the two teams remained unbeaten at the top of the table. Tim Hawes (not Adams) was awarded Man of the Match with his sound performance which included a number of sharp saves. This week we welcome Central United who have started slowly but are starting to show some form and we are expecting another tough game as they are coming off a good win over East Coast Bays last weekend. Equally we have been playing well showing resilience and patience that has ended in some excellent results so far this season and we are determine for this to continue. Finally I wish Warren and the 1 st team well tonight against what I am sure will be a formidable opposition. To all you spectators I hope you have an enjoyable evening at The Ave as I am sure the teams will provided some exciting football.

Kind Regards Chris Wallace - Reserves Coach

FOOTBALL CLUB RANKINGS After this week’s ratings Ellerslie have risen up to 17th place – our highest rating so far – let’s see how everyone else fared… After this weekend’s games there’s a new team at the top of the rankings. Dunedin’s Green Island hammered Grants Braes 7-0, but also benefited from a huge upset in the MPL to take the #1 spot. I for one did not imagine Ferrymead Bays would lose 1-0 at home to lowly Nomads Utd. And while Ferrymead slip to #5, Wellington Olympic maintained their 100% record to climb to #2. The young Birkenhead Utd side climb three spots to #3 following their thrashing of Waitakere City, and Miramar Rangers remain in #4 after an impressive home win over Lower Hutt City. The top five have opened a bit of a gap at the top of the rankings table, and this group is pretty unlikely to change much after next week's games – win, lose or draw. The big movers this week were Otago University, who fell five spots to #12 after a 3-2 home loss to Roslyn Wakari, Petone and Napier City Rovers whose wins saw them enter the top 20, and Central Utd who fell eight places to #23 after a third consecutive loss. Next week sees Round 1 Chatham Cup action, with the majority of Tier 2 sides involved. The big exception will be in the NRPL - weather permitting there will be a full round of league action!
