“THE AVE” ELLERSLIE AFC VS MANUREWA AFC
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Welcome to “The Ave” to all our members and our visitors today – especially our visitors from Manurewa AFC, coach Hoani Edwards and his staff and players. We are expecting a tense game of football out on the new Ave tonight in the main game as both teams need to shake early season predictions from pundits of a tough season. Both teams look to be fielding some talented young players in their ranks and I for one am excited to be welcoming Premier League Football back to the Ave for the first time since 2004. In the time between our last appearance in what is the best club league in New Zealand we have completely rebuilt the senior side of the club to focus on the quality young players the junior/youth side of the club are producing, with initiatives like the Napier U19’s Nationals being key to this stepping stone. It was a struggle at first but I think with the amount of talented young players we have in the first team at the moment who have come through Reserves and U19’s Football is a testament to all involved. Special mention must go to the Junior Club as their dedication to helping the seniors reach our Premier League goal has been fantastic, Rob McCarthy, Fred Poelman, Alan Goodwin, Ryan Shiffman and former youth coach Marc Prenty have all played a massive part in this. The club has also benefitted from strong clear leadership in the past couple of years, which has resulted in some real wins with the council and the local boards, ultimately this leadership has brought us the facility we are playing on at the moment – much of that praise must go to Mark Weipers who has powered through a mountain of red tape to get Ellerslie AFC facilities that we can be proud of. Mark along with Fred and Rob have no plans to stop now and have set their sights on stages 2 and 3 of the development and if all stages come off like planned (and knowing Mark they will) then Ellerslie AFC will have the facilities package to compete with any club in the country. Today of course is about 3 points for the first team and 3 points for the reserves as well and for the first team they are vital points so early in the season – If I could indulge in a slightly impartial message to the Ellerslie lads: Just remember that you guys got us here and you guys have won the right to keep us here, and know that your good enough individually as players, you just need to believe in the team and we will be fine. Thanks for your support today/tonight and we look forward to hosting you up in our clubrooms after all the fire and brimstone from the footy has settled! Cheers Tim Adams (Senior Club Chairman)

PRESIDENTS WELCOME It is with great excitement that on behalf of Ellerslie A.F.C., I extend a warm welcome to our friends from Manurewa A.F.C., together with our own Club members and supporters, to this very special evening. Our own Premier side playing in the NRFL Premier Division at home for the first time in a number of years and the first Saturday night game played at this level in recent memory, are two milestones that we can all be proud of tonight. The efforts of a number of our key administrators, especially Frederik Poelman and Rob McCarthy, in conjunction with the recent support of a number of the members of the Orakei Local Board, particularly Desley Simpson and Kit Parkinson, have culminated in the completion ( well almost !!) of this first Stage of the Michaels Avenue Redevelopment Plan. It has been a long process over some 8-9 years for previous politicians to recognize that the community of Ellerslie, and its wider catchment area, has had a legitimate requirement for increased field capacity to meet the ever increasing footballing demand in this area. Many of you, as committed members of this Club, also deserve our thanks for assisting in communicating this message as and when requested. With persistence, and a professional approach, however, we have now collectively achieved our first major objective. The opportunities these fantastic facilities offer our Club and its members are unprecedented in this Club’s history, and I challenge you all, as players, coaches or supporters to take advantage of what is on offer as we all work harder to make this Club , the Club of choice in our region. Best wishes to Warren Parke, the coaching staff and the players in both the Premiers and Reserves, as they continue on their respective journeys tonight. Kind regards
Mark B. Weipers President

13 14 15 16 17 18 History: In 1959 Manurewa A.F.C, as we know it today, was founded. The original home grounds were at Memorial Park but in 1964 the club relocated to Gallagher Park, where football was played up until the end of the 1996 season. The start of the 1997 season also saw the beginning of a new era back at Memorial Park. 1978 is the year the Manurewa Club will be remembered for; Winning the Northern League First Division Chatham Cup Adidas Challenge Cup A unique treble not achieved by anyone before or since. 1983 saw us win the National League and in 1984 we reclaimed the Chatham Cup. Our under 18 Team were runners up in the Junior National Cup in 1974/75/76/77 before finally winning it in the early 1980’s.

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT Last weekend we kicked off our season away to Onehunga Sports. We have been looking forward very much, as a club, to our return to Premier League Football for gone seven seasons now and while we were more than competitive with our opponents we managed to let the match drift away from us with some regretful decision making in the attacking third that could have changed our fortunes somewhat.
Onehunga dug in and held out for a 2-0 win after having a man sent off midway through the first half and battling very well with 10 men. The 0-2 score line was not reflective of our efforts though, as we had more possession than Sports through the match and we created more than them in the second half, splitting their defensive line regularly in the latter stages of the game as they struggled to hold on to the one goal lead hey enjoyed from the first half.
We could not however get the goal that mattered, and as does happen often when teams are smashing away at one end of the pitch you leave yourself a little open defensively and on a counter attack they caught us out. We found ourselves a bit stretched and a 20 metre strike on goal was deflected past Sean Dowling in our goal for 2-0 which effectively ended the game as with only 5 minutes on the clock the ask was beyond us.
There were many lessons to learn in this for us, not least the obvious in that we are facing very good opposition each and every week. We have done the right thing by ourselves and reflected heavily on the areas that let us down and we will be more positive in those areas and more clinical as a result of being honest with ourselves.
Man of the match went to captain Eddie Sillars for a gritty display in which he never stopped running, clocking up some impressive kilometres and all on the back of a heavily strapped ankle from a training incident on the Thursday before the game.
Well done to Chris Wallace and his Reserve team boys for their efforts in a well-deserved 3-2 win to get their season up and running.
My match report is short this week. No reason for that, other than with the excitement of the new season on us it is making me struggle to remain attentive to anything other than Football itself.
Kind Regards
Warren Parke - First Team Coach

RESERVES REPORT Well here we are the season has started and it is hard to believe that the first competition game of 2013 has come and gone. The EAFC Senior Reserves won 3-2 on Saturday April 6th against Onehunga Sports. We started slowly going down 0-1 after about 15 minutes following a break down their right wing which finished with their overlapping right fullback making a pinpoint cross for a half volley finish by their striker. Parity was re-established minutes later following an almost identical move down our right flank which was finished superbly by our youngest player, schoolboy Jordan Oosterhof. Up until this point we were a bit at sixes and sevens with the starting formation and so a quick change to 4-3-3 (thanks Warren) was made and from there on the Ellerslie boys dominated proceedings. Captain for the day Monju Shoei... dropped into holding midfield and pulled the strings controlling and organising the young team. At about the 40 minute mark Tim Hawes gained possession from a weakly taken shot with Onehunga pressing high on attack and reading the situation, launched the ball up field. Alex Witteveen anticipating the move got behind their defenders and with only the keeper to beat got to the ball first and deftly chipped the keeper for our second goal. Half-time came and the score remained 2-1. At half-time, Lewis Parke replaced Greg Crestenallo, who was required for first team duty. The Ellerslie boys then continued where they left off dominating possession and field position. Ben Shaw replaced Adam Foley at right back in the 65th minute and then at around 75 minutes the Ressies scored their 3rd goal after a well worked move up the middle of the park which saw Alex lay a ball off to Adam Scott just on halfway. Adam squared the ball to Callum Waters who threaded the ball through the defence for Alex to score with a well taken shot through the keeper’s legs, 3-1, 15 to go. Five minutes later, the Ressies who were guilty of napping, did not respond to a quickly taken throw after losing possession just inside half-way and two quick passes later the ball was in the back of the net, 3-2, 10 to go. The game ebbed and flowed at bit but the fitness of the Ellerslie boys showed through and the game finished 3-2. A great result and well deserved. While everyone played well the Player of the Day award went to Monju for his work rate and leadership.
Kind Regards Chris Wallace - Reserves Coach

GUEST ARTICLE If you want a job done properly… Around the world and particularly in the United Kingdom there is an ever growing fad around ‘lower league football’. It appears to me to have kicked off in the mid-nineties with the publication of Fever Pitch, Nick Hornby’s famous literary masterpiece. Even though the book is primarily about his life as an Arsenal supporter, during the finest passages he writes with wonderfully evocative romanticism about the cosy misery of following Cambridge United through one of the longest losing streaks in league history. The English seemed to identify with this greatly. Go figure. The timing couldn’t have been better. As Fever Pitch was selling like hotcakes, blogs were in the process of springing into life as the first in a burgeoning internet phenomenon that we now know as social media. Today, there are more football blogs than I’ve had hot dinners and the vast bulk of them are focussed on so -called lower leagues, which with all due modesty New Zealand club football could be classed as. However while this explains the popularity of football blogs in the UK, how is it that in a rugby mad country like Aotearoa, there aren’t really any rugby blogs to speak of, while in recent times several excellent sites dedicated to football have sprouted up? There has always been Jeremy Ruane’s brilliantly rich and colourful www.ultimatenzsoccer.com of course, but a couple of years ago it was joined by www.aseasonofsaturdays.blogspot.co.nz - a blog dedicated to Wainuiomata FC in the Capital Premier League and my own blog www.in-the-back-of-the.net. We also have Maurice Tillotson’s Cerebral Soccer, a fascinating take on the philosophy of football at www.uspiel.com and now just in the last couple of months Dwayne Barlow has started www.thematamatabus.com and Mike Fitzpatrick has brought us www.nzfootballclubteamrankings.blogspot.co.nz. Football is perhaps more suited to blogging than other sports because it is romantic and accessible. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to understand it, it’s cheap or free to attend, it’s popular with a worldwide potential audience in the billions and it invokes passion like no other sport on earth. But in New Zealand there is something even more important going for it – the fact that our media almost completely ignore it. While one assumes the rugby community feels fairly well served by what they are spoon fed, for us enlightened few who follow the round ball code in this football desert, we have no choice but to cover it ourselves. Most historians will tell you that the printing press is right up there with the wheel amongst the inventions that have changed civilisation more than any others. Now print is in its death throes and electronic media is taking over. We no longer have to miss out on watching let alone reading about our obscure yet beloved teams playing on the other side of the world. The internet may not yet have changed the world to the same extent the printing press did, but it has significantly changed the way we enjoy football. Not a moment too soon.

FOOTBALL CLUB RANKINGS - 8th April OK this week’s rankings summary from North to South goes like this.
In the NRPL it was East Coast Bays with a confidence boosting 4-2 away win over reigning champions Bay Olympic, and a stunning 8-0 for Mark Cossey’s Hamilton Wanderers over Waitakere City that caught the eye. In the CPL ‘The Greeks’ laid down an early marker with an impressive home win over 2012 champs Napier City Rovers; both sides will surely be in contention for the much-
coveted title come the business end of the season. Olympic’s arch-rivals Miramar Rangers will doubtless be there as well – and Rangers started well with a 2-0 win over Petone. In the MPL, an important win for Cashmere Tech and a surprise home loss for 2012 South Island Champions Ferrymead Bays means Cashmere take the number one nation-
al spot – the strong presence of MPL teams in the top 10 is a bit artificial at this early stage of the season because those teams have now played four games whereas the rest of the country are only just off the mark. But let’s not in any way underestimate the recently formed Cashmerians - I for one am looking forward to their Chatham Cup performance this year. In the FSPL perennial champions Caversham AFC gave new coach Tim Horner an opening day win over Invercargill’s Old Boys – no big surprise there. But ‘The Train’ will face a tougher ride to the title this season, so I’m duly informed. Dunedin Tech and the youth-
ful Green Island side look likely contenders, and both scored comfortable away wins. But it was Rosyln-Wakari, in their 125th Year, who had the most impressive victory in the FSPL; 4-1 over Mike McGarry’s ‘Plainsmen’. One question that will doubtless be in some of your minds is: ‘How come the rankings
don’t always reflect the positions on the league table?’ Well the rankings have a factor that allows for the ‘home advantage’. Hence, for example, an away win is worth more points than a home win. This is why Green Island is on slightly more points than Onehunga Sports, even though both sides won their opening games 2-0. I’m not so sure about the home crowd advantage in the New Zealand setting, but regardless - get out there and support your local team this coming weekend; who knows!
