BUMPER ISSUE - 5 NRFL GAMES
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Welcome everyone to Michaels Ave Reserve for your game – we have a busy schedule in front of us for the next 5 days with 5 NRFL games and many other AFF games as well. In particular we would like to issue a warm welcome to Nick and his Mt Albert Ponsonby side and Dave and his North Shore team – it’s great to host you guys here and we hope you enjoy your respective evenings. These next 5 days are massive for the club on many levels – in no particular order here we go. Div 3 Elks play Div 3 CFC on Friday night at Michaels Ave – a win for the Elks will go a long way to securing the Div 3 title – as an impartial Ellerslie supporter I think they can afford to draw so neither Ellerslie team loses and win the title next week. O40’s Mustangs take on Bucklands Beach in their final game of the league and with BB only sitting two points behind them in second this is a genuine final – best of luck to Bruce and his guys at 2:45pm at Lloyd Elsmore on Saturday Ben Pauley and his NRFL Div 2 Reserves side (known as the Ponies) need only 1 point to secure the title in their first year in the NRFL, it’s a massive achievement but they still have three games left including todays clash against Waiuku so they will need to focus to make sure they bring home the gold. Our Reserves side who lead the NRFL Div 1 reserves league can’t win the league today if they beat MAP but they will take another step towards the title with 3 points today – they have been playing well of late and we hope to see another good performance today and on Wednesday night against North Shore who currently sit 2nd in the league and will pose a big challenge. The First Team – still sitting pretty well in 3rd – but off the back of two losses for the first time this season, they need a bounce back and the opportunity is there for us with games on Saturday and Tuesday against MAP and Shore respectively posing big challenges but big rewards as well – if we could go into the game against Hibiscus next weekend with some form behind us (and some points) it will be much easier. U19’s Torrens – in their first year in the league they have a massive game on Sunday at 11am out west at Croatian Cultural Club against Central – a win for Terry and his lads would give them the league title for the top U19’s league in Auckland – and would be a nice cherry to top the ACFC U17’s win earlier in the year. Hopefully some of these results go our way – regardless we will enjoy reflecting on the game over a cold beer and some hot food in the clubrooms after the home games – we hope to see you up there!
Cheers Tim Adams Senior Club Chairman

CLUB ANNOUNCEMENT IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT Re: Napier U19's Tournament
Ellerslie AFC are pleased to announce the confirmation of Terry Torrens as the head coach for the 2014 Tournament. Senior Club Director of Coaching Warren Parke (who will also form part of the coaching team in Napier) was pleased to confirm Terry (the ACFC U17's Tournament Winning coach) and was excited about our chances in this years tournament, which will naturally include a number of players who featured in Terry's title winning U17's team. The other two coaching positions are likely to be confirmed shortly, and will most likely be from within the Senior Clubs existing NRFL coaching group. Team Manager Tim Adams is the 5th member of the group and hopes to be able to confirm a physio to the coaching group in the next couple of weeks. A schedule is being confirmed at the moment, which will involve dates for the pre-tournament trainings and games as well as information regarding the tournament itself. Invites will be sent to club players shortly with as much information as possible so potential players and parents can forward plan as much as possible. KEY INFORMATION: - Napier Tournament Dates 24th to 27th October 2014 - We will be staying at Bluewater Hotel in Napier - The team will be travelling down on Friday the 24th, leaving in the early morning - The team will return some time on Monday depending on how far we progress - Players will need to contribute a fee to be eligible - fee will be confirmed in your official invite If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Ellerslie AFC Senior Club Chairman Tim Adams on chairman@ellersliefootball.org.nz

IN THE SPOTLIGHT If Onehunga Sports can claim the club’s first ever ASB Chatham Cup, there should be no problems in holding the trophy aloft. Captain Ross Haviland and three of his team mates spend all day lifting heavy objects. Haviland is joined by Sean Lovemore, Cameron Lindsay and Souleymane Cissoko in his role as a factory hand at Lion Breweries and says the physical nature of the work comes in handy on a Saturday afternoon. “I don’t have to go to the gym as often as I should,” he jokes. “But it’s really hard work and we lift quite heavy things. We have to be careful and make sure we use the right technique so we don’t get injured.” As well as the conditioning benefits of such a gruelling job, Sports also see a return in terms of team bonding. “The four of us are all good mates and it’s great to see the guys every day at work,” Haviland says. The quartet is likely to need all of their added fitness and morale this weekend in the ASB Chatham Cup semifinals as they will be tackling the defending champions. It will be a historic occasion when Sports host Christchurch outfit Cashmere Technical at Waikaraka Park on Saturday as this is unchartered territory for the club. “This is the furthest we’ve ever got and most of the players haven’t made it this far before either,” Haviland says. “We’ve got quite a young team and they’re all really excited, the older guys are buzzing as well so it’s a good feeling. It would be great to go one more step.” Onehunga, dually coached by former Kingz player Hiroshi Miyazawa and Peter Martin, have been chasing success on two fronts for much of the season as they are also among the leading sides in the Lotto NRFL Premier League. But they have bowed out of the title race in recent weeks so their hopes of silverware now rest solely on Saturday’s encounter. “Our aim was to win the double but with injuries and suspensions it’s hard to keep a strong enough squad together. We’re disappointed to have missed out but we’re looking forward to this weekend and hopefully we can get at least one trophy,” Haviland says. The degree to which attentions have now turned to the cup was displayed on Tuesday night when Sports fielded a second-string line-up in a league catch-up game against Birkenhead United and were soundly beaten 4-1. Haviland and most of his fellow first-picks were not involved as their legs were being saved for the tough challenge posed by Cashmere. “We’ve had a few scouting reports and have done some homework so we know a bit about them. Hopefully we have enough to go on,” Haviland says. The 22-year-old was a non-travelling reserve in the New Zealand squad that headed to Nigeria for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2009 and has spent the last two summers commuting to Napier to play for Hawke’s Bay United in the ASB Premiership. But, despite having achieved much in his short career, the Scottish-born defender says taking the field in the final of the country’s oldest cup competition would become one of his favourite memories. “To make the final of a major tournament would be a big moment for anybody. It would be great to be involved in at least one so I just can’t wait to get there.” Onehunga Sports are not the only side hosting a Chatham Cup semi-final in the City of Sails this weekend. Fellow Aucklanders Central United welcome Napier City Rovers to Kiwitea Street in the other final-four clash on Sunday. FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT Eastern Suburbs were siDng in second place, on the same points as us, going in to this match and a difficult aEernoon was expected, this was compounded by the hard and unforgiving surface of the pitch at Madills Farm and the gusty southerly wind that had the temperature in the single digits. The condi6ons were faced by both teams but we struggled to adapt to them and Suburbs didn’t. They played the long ball over us and pressed us very well in our defensive third, and our ability to get out was in ques6on. Any and all of our clearances seemed to go out of play and when we tried to play out through our midfield we were inaccurate and we were found wan6ng technically. Interes6ngly, Suburbs were no be er at 6mes. I thought this was a poor game of football, and lacked anything construc6ve, however it was punctuated with a cracking good strike at the hour mark to give our hosts a 1-0 lead which they held onto in a match that could conceivably have gone either way. I don’t think our opposi6on would be too happy with their performance given how well they have played this season but they looked more capable than us on the day and I am sure they are delighted with the three points. This fixture was a wakeup call to all and unless we can get playing again and move the ball the way we have at 6mes this season we may find ourselves in a real scrap to obtain that third promo6on spot come the end of the month. We are all aware of our shortcomings over the past two weeks , with back to back loses however to compare the performance in our 0-1 loss to Mangere the week before to the shiE we put in at Suburbs is like comparing chalk with cheese. Our MOM went to Sean Dowling who as always put in a commanding performance and possibly felt helpless as he watched us struggle in front of him.

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT Enough of the disappointment from me though and 6me to give the boys a big hand for the work they have put in up to this point. There are another 9 teams in this league that would love to be in our posi6on with 4 games to play in what is a very good compe66on this season. We deserve to be where we are, and need only to tap into the quali6es we have displayed thus far, to conďŹ dently go into the remaining four matches with a determined and accurate approach to our football. I would like to take this opportunity to ask all that follow us over the next three weeks to get behind the team in these last vital matches, as your support could prove to be the ingredient that gives us the edge, as we enjoy three home games out of the four ďŹ xtures leE.
Regards Warren

RESERVES REPORT In the past two weeks the Reserves have played Mangere at home and Eastern Suburbs away – both these games were crucial if we were going to take the NRFL Div 1 Reserves Title. Against Mangere we started with a hiss and a roar when Niall opened the scoring in the 10th min. He popped home a loose ball from a corner Mangere hadn’t dealt with. However we lapsed and allowed Mangere to score just 2 mins later to bring the game even. Dylan put our lead back to 1 goal in the 20th minute when he finished a 1 on 1 with the keeper and then Jordan quickly added our 3rd just a couple of minutes later. Just as we were star6ng to look comfortable we gave away a pen, which they converted just before the half hour mark to make the score 3-2. That was the score at halEime and the boys were a li le frustrated that whilst we had played well we had lapsed a couple of 6mes and been punished. Monju gave us a two goal buffer on the 50th min aEer a good assist from Rob, but 1 wasn’t enough from Monju and 2 minutes later he doubled his score aEer a great set of play and final pass from Mladen. At this point it’s 5-2 and the lads were queuing up for goals – there were a number of offsides as Mangere played an extremely high line, combined with some crea6ve refereeing. However we were a li le guilty of some careless finishing as well. In the 67’ min aEer a great run Tevin was fouled in the box and a penalty awarded – we have never seen Seb move so fast from CB for anything but his claims were waived away by Tevin who wanted to convert his good work – but as luck would have it the keeper made a good save. The final act of scoring was in the 80th minute when Monju sealed his hat-trick from a Lachlan pass – so a 6-2 win, 3 points which we needed and a boost to our goal difference – but it was a bit frustra6ng that we couldn’t get into top gear for most of the game! MOM Points: Callum Waters 3 Connor Tracey 2 Monju Shohei 1

RESERVES REPORT Against Suburbs we encountered a tricky pitch and a lot of crosswind which made playing a li le tough but all the coaching staff were impressed with how the guys tried to play the ball and the accuracy and movement of the team – Jordan in par6cular was geDng into some really dangerous areas and trying things which is good to see – equally he was working hard off the ball to help with our defensive shape, which is something he has been working on recently and it’s good to see it pay off. The game could have been much more comfortable because despite our share of possession and our good play we were slightly struggling to create clear cut chances, we did get two good goals from Jordan and Adam Sco – which were enough on a day where Rene kept his sheet clean. MOM Points: Jordan Oosterhof 3 Rob Hall 2 Monju Shohei 1 So great work geDng 6 points over the last two weeks – let’s stay focused on our game today and improving our performance again and if we do that I’m sure the desired outcome will fall our way.
Cheers Tim

THIRDS REPORT Firstly I would like to welcome all the supporters to the ground today and thank them for coming down to support the club. One of the special things about Ellerslie football club is the support we have and the atmosphere created in and around the club, not just at matches. Ellerslie 2nd Division Reserves have a chance to wrap up the league 6tle today with a win or a draw. We are currently 9 points ahead of our closest rivals (Fencibles) and 12 ahead of Forest Hill who have a game in hand. With 3 games leE to play picking up a point in any will ensure the 6tle comes to Ellerslie. It has been a season steeped in success for the team, aEer going down 3-1 in our opening game of the season against Fencibles we have gone on to drop only 2 more points (a draw against Onehunga Mangere), recording 75 goals and conceding only 17 in the following 18 games. Overall the team has played 22 games this season (19 league and 3 cup) scoring 95 goals and conceding only 26 (6 in the ďŹ rst 2 games!) in the process. The success of the team has been driven by a big improvement defensively (recording 8 clean sheets this season) and an understanding and depth in the squad allowing free owing scoring. There have also been some standout individuals in the team this season, most notably Josh Anthony. Josh Anthony is having a stand out year for the team notching up 34 goals and a number of assists between league and cup games. He has scored against every team in the compe66on in almost every game (including the last 17 on the trot). Josh is a player of tremendous technical ability and speed. To accompany that he has a fantas6c aDtude and is a very humble individual. Having him as an outlet, a acking threat and member of our squad each week is been a pleasure and for my money is odds on for club Golden Boot. To add to the league success we have successfully nego6ated our way to the Bowl Final for the NRFL. The team has been impressive in the campaign noth-

The ďŹ nal will be held at Seddon Park (Springs home ground) on 14th of September 3.30pm and the team would appreciate all your support if you can come down. Once again thanks for your support. NRFL DIV ONE PREVIEW Mangere vs Eastern Suburbs Centre Park 1 2:45pm Saturday Both teams are on a bit of a roll after a rough patch - but their ambitions for this tail end of the season are a little different. Suburbs will want to keep on chasing for the title they last won in 2011 with a win, while Mangere will be wanting 3 points to keep their slim promotion chances alive. TIP: Suburbs just a little bit better than Mangere on the day Melville vs Metro Gower Park 1 2:45pm Saturday Metro will be wanting to build on their recent draw with top of the table springs with the same amount of points neighbours MAP took when Melville last played on Gower Park - Melville on the other hand will be desperate to get as high as they can to give them a good end to a season which promised plenty. TIP: Metro on the improve, Melville to blood some more young guys - a draw Papatoetoe vs North Shore Murdoch Park 1 2:45pm Saturday Realistically Shore are too far ahead to get pulled into the relegation battle - but if Papatoetoe could win here the Allen Hill side would only be 3 points ahead and with Toe having a game in hand. Having said that I just don’t see how Toe are going to get up after Rewa caught them last week.. TIP: Shore to confirm the relegation battle will only be between Rewa and Toe with a win Takapuna vs Hibiscus Coast Taharoto Park 1 2:45pm Saturday Taka have string two wins back to back after a shocking run of results where they found every way in the book to drop points - well I think that makes a team stronger so for me Taka are going to come home with a wet sail. Coast on the other hand seem to be struggling and while they still hold 4th position the pressure may be getting to them TIP: Taka on home soil even without big James just a bit too good Western Springs vs Manurewa Seddon Fields 1 5:00pm Saturday Springs suffered a shock draw last week against neighbours Metro, but I think they will be focused for the challenge of Rewa, who finally picked up the points they needed last week on Memorial Park (the actual opposite surface from Seddon Fields). TIP: Springs by a few
