PROUDLY PRESENTS
“THE AVE”
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Welcome to another Cup round of football here at the new Michaels Ave Reserve. For those who havn’t been here this season welcome and we hope you enjoy our new facilities and for those returning we wish you a warm welcome back. Today’s games are headlined by two Cup clashes between Ellerslie and Ngaruawahia (in the NRFL Knockout Cup) and Ellerslie and Waitakere City in the 3rd round of the Chatham Cup - both games will be exciting affairs infront of what we hope will be a bumper crowd (mostly in red if things go to plan!) Firstly welcome to Ngaruawahia and their reserves team who beat us twice last season in the NRFL Reserves Div 1 - although we finished second in the league above the “Green Machine” we struggled with their style and the boys are eager to test themselves against more quality opposition. Also a warm welcome to Waitakere City who face off against our First Team today and of course are also in the Premier League with us this season - the vagaries of the draw mean we face Waitakere City again in a couple of weeks in league action. We wish all the best to all the visiting teams and their fans today - please help us create a great atmosphere at this new ground and we hope you enjoy your cup football day.
After the final whistle please join us in our clubrooms around the front of the YMCA - if you don’t know where your going follow somebody who looks thirsty as we will have the bar open from halftime of the reserves game. There will also be hot food available both on the side of the pitch from our sausage sizzle or up in the club from our kitchen - and it the weather is no good tuck into a hot chocolate or a coffee for the more sophisticated from our Coffee Truck pitchside. Regards ELLERSLIE AFC

PRESIDENTS REPORT On behalf of our Club, a warm welcome to the Players, Coaching staff and Supporters of both Ngaruawahia AFC and Waitakere City FC as they visit “ the Avenue ” in their quests to progress further in the Knock Out Cup and Chatham Cup competitions respectively. We look forward to watching top quality football from all involved , played in a competitive , yet sportsmanlike manner. As we approach the half way point in the season, from our Club’s point of view, we can look back on what has been achieved so far with a certain amount of satisfaction. Both our Reserves and Premier teams are proving that they can successfully compete in their respective competitions . Belief is a big part of high performance sport and our members can see that the confidence is growing within these teams, ably assisted by wise counsel from the coaching and management staff. A solid platform has been established upon which further success by both these teams can be expected in the next few months. In addition, the boost that our new facilities have given all Club members is reflected in the growing level of support provided each week on the sidelines by male and female, young and old , as the entire Club swings in behind our top flight teams. Hopefully, by the time you read this, our long awaited rubbish bins will be installed to cater for the “activities” of this wonderful support crew. There is no better way to see this further engagement of our community with the Club than to come down to the artificial fields here at the Reserve early on a Saturday morning and see the myriad of players, mothers, fathers and grandparents all enjoying participation in a game of football. Finally, on behalf of our members, I would like to extend a big thank you to all the employees and volunteers of the Club that give their time and energies so freely in pursuit of delivering the best footballing experience to our members. Without you all, and our various sponsors, this Club would not be heading in the positive direction it has now embarked upon. To Warren, Chris and the boys, good luck for your games today as you strive to build on your previous successes and grasp the opportunities before you.
Regards Mark B. Weipers President

CLUB INFORMATION: Waitakere City Football Club was formed to compete in the National League in 1989, as a composite team involving clubs from West Auckland. In 1991, Waitakere City moved from their Western Springs headquarters, following an amalgamation with Massey AFC (formed in 1976), to the current facilities at Fred Taylor Park, located in Whenuapai.
Since that time, Waitakere City has established itself as one of the top teams in the country, both in terms of results and entertainment value.

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT We were at home again last Saturday night as we entertained Onehunga Sports. We started very well, taking the lead within minutes of the kick off through Will Roper who deceived the goalkeeper with his mishit shot. The match settled into a well contested and high tempo game after that with the midfield exchanges dominating proceedings. Eddie Sillars, Scott Wallace and the again impressive Tom Damon battled well for control and while perhaps not dominating a very good Sports engine room, were the measure of them and we looked organised enough to have them stretched regularly.
Will Roper
Sports pulled a goal back from an excellent Furukawa strike, who let fly from 20 metres out, on a loose ball we failed to clear after plenty of opportunity. We don’t get our heads down any more when things get tough and we continued to push on and trouble Sports, endeavouring to get in front again. It was Eddie Sillars who scored the second goal, from close range, to put us in charge once more. We went to the break with a 2-1 advantage and all were encouraged with the teams application. Jamie Olausen and Ryan O’Sullivan in particular were having good games as was Warrick Hart up front who was holding the ball up well for us. No changes for us at the break and we returned determined to concede nothing in the second half. Sean Dowling was accurate in everything he was called on to do and tipped a nice effort over the bar at the 60 minute mark which dropped late on him. Isaac Brealey had a good game down the right flank and was brought off to allow Nathan Palmer to continue the good work.

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT
Alex Witteveen
Alex Witteveen enjoyed the final 15 minutes , replacing Warwick and we carried on protecting what we had and creating what we could going forward. We were looking for a third goal to seal our points and Sports were working hard for an equaliser. We could of had a goal a few times and to be fair Sports could, with a bit more luck got what they needed.
Sports threw players forward and had a real go at us in the final 10 minutes. We brought on Ahmed Al-Jawad to shore up the area in front of our CBs and battled on. The match finished 2-1 and Ryan O’Sullivan picked up the MOM. Regards Warren
Ryan O’Sullivan celebrating a win P.S. This weekend’s match against Waitakere will be debut games for our short term signings from the Pheonix under an agreement made by NZ football to help small clubs with limited funding. So a big welcome to Paul Ifill, Carlos Hernandez, Andrew Durante and Leo Bertos.

CHATHAM CUP ROUNDUP Central United’s ASB Chatham Cup defence faltered at the first hurdle, with the 2012 champions the biggest casualty on a day of high second round drama on Monday. Seeded into the second round but landing a testing tie against fellow Lotto NRFL club Ellerslie AFC, the five time Chatham Cup winners exited in humble fashion with an own goal eventually being the difference between the two sides in the 2-1 defeat. All three goals came in a six-minute span mid-way through the first half as Will Roper opened the scoring for the home team after 22 minutes. Milos Nikolic replied four minutes later only for the Central United own goal two minutes later proving the final scoring action as Ellerslie completed the upset win. The drama continued across town as Papatoetoe AFC and Westlake Boys High School served up an enthralling encounter in South Auckland with the home team hauling back a three goal deficit after a horror start to force extra time against the students. A goal apiece took the match to penalties, with Papatoetoe’s goalkeeper Jason Mann the hero to guide his side to a 4-3 win on spot kicks. Neil Emblen’s Lotto NRFL Men’s Division 2-leading Western Springs AFC side were dumped out in extra-time at Onehunga Mangere United AFC. Having won 5-1 at the same venue the week before in the league competition, the visitors fell to Rob Winfield’s 115th minute winner at the Mangere Domain as the home side’s goalkeeper Glen Pascoe turned in a sparkling performance. In Manurewa, the home side survived a massive scare as the Lotto NRFL Men’s Premier League outfit climbed out of an 0-2 hole at Memorial Park, taking a 6-2 extra time win over Tauranga Old Blues – current leaders in the Waikato Bay of Plenty Federation 1 competition. Goals to Hicham Kamri and Brad Rathbun got the home side to extra time and the South Aucklanders finished over the top of the visitors as Justin Horan’s brace combined with goals to Futsal Whites skipper Marvin Eakins and Jason Beeston completed the recovery act. Mangere United also turned the formbook on its head with the Lotto NRFL second division outfit ousting first division Forrest Hill Milford 2-1 on Auckland’s North Shore as Aaron Bawdekar’s extra time goal separated the two sides at Becroft Park. Lotto NRFL Men’s’ Division 2 side Fencibles United AFC also turned over higher level opposition, Grant Robertson’s side taking a 3-0 win over Kevin Fallon’s Division 1 Eastern Suburbs AFC side. First half goals to Alex Ogidi and Paulo Montino helped the visitors on their way at Madills Farm and Robbie Robinson’s second half strike sealed the outcome. Both teams finished the match men down, Suburbs having two sent off while Fencibles had Ricky Lines dismissed with 20 minutes to go. Lotto NRFL Men’s Premier League sides Bay Olympic and Three Kings United avoided cup banana skins with respective wins over lower level opposition; the west Auckland side claiming a 4-0 win at Papakura City FC while Three Kings turned away Waikato Bay of Plenty Federation League 1 team Taupo AFC 3-0 at Keith Hay Park.
Onehunga Sports’ 4-1 (Lotto NRFL Men’s Premier League) victory over AFF/NFF Conference leaders Waitemata AFC rounded out the Auckland Football club involvement in the second round. The third round draw completed on Tuesday has thrown up three all-Lotto NRFL Men’s Premier League ties as Bay Olympic host league-leaders East Coast Bays, Manurewa AFC entertain Three Kings United and Ellerslie AFC host Waitakere City FC. Division 2 Fencibles United AFC will aim to take down Premier League side Onehunga Sports while Mangere United will have similar hopes against Premier League side Hamilton Wanderers. Onehunga Mangere United AFC will host Ngaruawahia United AFC at the Mangere Domain while Papatoetoe AFC face a trip to Melville United’s Gower Park in the other. Full third round draw details are on the next page

RESERVES REPORT This was the first game of the second round. Our expectation going into this game and for every game this round is that we will be competing against teams who, like ourselves, are getting better and better as the season progresses. Also, having just come over a resounding 10-0 victory in the opening game of the Reserves Knockout Cup on Queens Birthday Monday, it was important to keep our feet on the ground and approach this game with the right attitude. Unfortunately this was not the case in the first half. Onehunga Sports came at us with determination and we struggled to find any rhythm. While we had some promising attacking moves the final pass or cross was poorly executed and we finished the half at nil all. The half time talk was short and sweet; start playing! More urgency, more creative movement, accurate passing and put the goalie under pressure by passing, crossing and shooting accurately in the attacking third. Jordan Oosterhof came on for Andy Wallace and immediately buzzed around in his usual manner putting the opposing defence under pressure and in the 47th minute won possession, moved the ball quickly to Zach Margison out wide on the right who got a great cross in to Adam Scott on the far post who shot just wide. Onehunga Sport continued to harry and harass us going to a back 3 in an attempt to overload the midfield and while this put us some pressure we dealt with it quite effectively. In the 55th minute Matt Scarborough replaced Lewis Parke and 5 minutes later Callan Manickum replaced Ben Shaw. By this time our fitness and increased desire and energy level started to take its toll on Onehunga Sport.
Mike Glenny on the ball in midfield
Callan also made a difference in midfield and in the 68 th minute after beating his man laid on a great through ball for Adam Scott who fired off a shot over the bar. Again in the 70 th minute Callan slipped a nice ball to Monju who had continued his run forward after winning possession and cut Andy disappointed after trying an audacious shot a nice ball back for Jordan to score with a nicely taken 1st touch finish. We continued to press often breaking quickly after soaking up Onehunga Sports attack and as they were pushing for the equaliser and contin

RESERVES REPORT uing with 3 at the back more and more opportunities arose. One such opportunity came in the 80th minute when Callum Waters found himself attacking down the left and made a great cross to the far post but Zach Margison’s first time effort went over the bar. Finally in the 90th minute Adam Scott scored after some individual brilliance which found him one on one with the keeper and he finished nicely, game over and another win, 2 – nil, well done boys. While this was not one our finest performances I am proud of the boys for their tenacity and determination to achieve the result we did. Credit goes not only to those mentioned above but to all the players and particularly for the improvement made in the second half. The dePotent Sub Bench fence starting with Tim in Goal and the back four of Michael Glenny, Freddie Ljungberg, Matt Scarborough (Ben Shaw) and Myron Manickum defended well and along with Defensive Mid Monju Shoei achieved our first goal for the day to keep a “Clean Sheet”. Man of the Match went to Callan Manickum. This week we welcome Ngaruawahia and Waitakere City to Michaels Ave for the second round of the Reserves Knockout Cup and the Chatham Cup respectively. To our boys (1st’s and Reserves), continue the effort and remember winnings a habit, let’s keep it up! Best Regards

JUNIOR NEWS Wolves to play 9th AFF Red and in the 10th Grade, we had AFF Red to play against AFF Green. The 10th Grade side was won by AFF Red who overcame their 3 goal deficit over AFF Green. A strong run by the AFF Green team as they would be the 5th graded team in that age group, something the players in that team were extremely proud of. For the 9th Grade, the game was back and forth between the St. Michael’s Wolves and 9th AFF Red. At any moment of the game it seemed as though the other was about to take control. In a game of fantastic football that spanned a couple of extra time minutes, the game was officially declared a draw and both teams crowned champions of the 9 th Grade.
It was absolutely fantastic to run the tournament right here on the turf field and the players were ecstatic throughout the day and left the field depleted of all energy. It was great to watch all the brilliant skills that were on display throughout the day and we really look forward to our 6 th, 7th, and 8th Grade tournament that is kicking off on June 30th. Thanks to all that attended and it was a great day! Cheers Ryan Shiffman Junior Director of Coaching

PREMIER CLUB RANKINGS After the last round of league games it’s the FSPL that can now boast the #1 ranked club side in the land. Roslyn Wakari’s emphatic 5-0 away win over Queenstown Rovers sees them jump two places in to the #1 spot - and what a great way to celebrate the clubs recent 125th anniversary. Wellington Olympic slip back to #2 following a 3-3 draw with Miramar Rangers, and Birkenhead Utd climb two places to #3 following a 2-1 home win over Three Kings Utd. Ferrymead Bays fall two places to #4 after an incredible 5-0 defeat at the hands of Cashmere Technical, and up from #8 to #5 are Caversham AFC with an equally remarkable 5-0 win over the #1 team from Week 6; Green Island. Big movers this week are Dunedin Technical (up five to #6) following a 5-0 win away at Invercargill Old Boys, and East Coast Bays (down five to #9) after their 1-3 home loss to Bay Olympic. Next weekend will see a break from most league games in lieu of Round 3 Chatham Cup action, and there are some massive match-ups. The repeats of last weekend's Bay Olympic vs East Coast Bays and Cashmere Technical vs Ferrymead Bays games, along with Caversham AFC vs Dunedin Technical, perhaps being the pick of the bunch.
