PROUDLY PRESENTS

“THE AVE”

ELLERSLIE AFC VS EASTERN SUBURBS

WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Welcome to Michaels Ave for the first action packed NRFL afternoon/evening of football as our three NRFL teams welcome both Mt Albert Ponsonby and Eastern Suburbs to “The Ave”. First up we have Mt Albert Ponsonby who are facing up against our 3rd team who play in the NRFL Div 2 Reserves and under the leadership of Ben Pauley they have forged a decent record and are looking to push on towards the top of the table with a long run of homes games coming up. Mt Albert Ponsonby also are facing a first season in the NRFL as a third team and while they seem to be a little shaky , they will be up for this game! Following on the heels of that game we have Eastern Suburbs Reserves who only a couple of weeks ago were top of the NRFL Div 1 reserves table and looking like a very tricky outfit— however a tough trip to Hamilton (which we know all about) and another shock result has seen the gloss come off their season a little - however make no mistake they will be fired up for this game, and Chris and his boys will have to lift out of their mini slump as well after a couple of poor performances against Mangere, and Papatoetoe before they sat out a week after a bye in the cup. Our third game is the Orakei Derby - it has been a while since we played our neighbours from Kohimarama - with both clubs spending some time in the premier league whilst the other was in div 1 but this game looks to be a classic. Both teams with interesting records so far in the league with Suburbs boasting a very impressive defensive record - but with a pretty decent amount of goals scored as well they obviously pose a threat to Sean in goal as well. Thanks to everyone involved in helping making sure these three quality games are played without hassle today - we appreciate your help as always! I quickly wanted to touch on a couple of other things - firstly the club are proud to announce we will be running a “festival of football” during June and July, there are a number of different events and other fun things planned for this period - if your keen to know more have a look at the opposite page and see just a snapshot of what we have on offer. Secondly to the Ellerslie AFC club members—it’s coming to that time of year where I have to start chasing people for fee’s, it really is a pain and I wish people would pay on time so I didn’t have to do it. But it’s part of making a football club run and I will be chasing people and chasing them hard so if your one of the guys on my shortlist do me a favour and pay now and avoid having me harassing you. Cheers Tim Adams Senior Club Chairman

NRFL DIV ONE PREVIEW Melville United vs Hibiscus Coast

Gower Park

14:45

10th vs 3rd, based on the league table this game has only one winner with the guys from Gower Park seemingly struggling. But I think we may see either a home win or a draw as it seems the Coast bubble has burst recently Prediction: 2-1 Melville Papatoetoe AFC vs Mangere United

Murdoch Park

14:45

Home ground advantage is the only advantage ‘toe have in this game - they are poor this season. If they can score early or keep their sheet clean till late in the game the new manager at Mangere might be faced with a few frustrated players Prediction: Mangere by 3 Takapuna AFC vs Mt Albert Ponsonby

Taharoto Park

14:45

On paper two strong physical teams with two prolific strikers, but the points don’t have seem to fallen into place for these two teams. I don’t think either team is too far off hitting their straps but time could run out for them soon! Prediction: Colligan 3, Robinson 3 Western Springs vs Metro FC

Seddon Fields

14:45

Pre-season favourites Springs have recovered from a bit of a stumble, a recovery that coincided with the arrival of striker Adam Dickinson. The general consensus was that Springs lacked a little upfront so this signing seems to have the favourites well back on track. Metro - well they have some decent players but Metro just always seem to self implode. Prediction: 4-0 Springs North Shore United vs Manurewa AFC

Allen Hill Stadium

14:45

Sundays game see’s a battle of a couple of underperforming teams - I’m not sure who will be more disappointed in their season so far, Manurewa after having come down from Premier League with us last year or North Shore looking to kick on after missing out on promotion last season, I can see this game swinging on the finishing of Stephen Carmichael. Prediction: 2-1 Manurewa

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT We welcomed Warkworth to Michaels Ave for what we expected to be a well contested Chatham Cup fixture. As anticipated Warkworth stood up to the challenge and tried to play when they did have possession, however it was Ellerslie who enjoyed the majority of the football, and while plenty of endeavour was seen from the Warkworth outfit, it was Ellerslie who did best to control the game. It was a small crowd that witnessed the match and they would have been disappointed with our lack of ability to truly dominate a lowly division 2 team and how we struggled to put the result to bed earlier rather than later. That said, we did what we needed to and have progressed into the next round and this was the biggest box ticked. Sean Dowling hardly had a touch of the ball and spent the evening doing his best to stay alert. Again the back four stood resolute while Zac Rathbone in his first game for us was very good. We welcomed Martin Pike back into the team after an injury had side-lined him and it was immediately clear what was missing for us in our last two hitouts. Matt Leishout also started after three weeks out and played very well before limping out of the action after 70 minutes. The goals we scored were all well worked and deserved with Freddie Ljungberg, Andy Wallace, Dominic Higgins and the always impressive Tim Richardson all adding to their personnel tallies, but improvement needs to be made in our completion rate. We create plenty but lack aggression offensively at times. We are certainly competitive and will match any with our game, but we need to connect better going forward and lift the bar in regard to our completion rate in front of goal. Most coaches will make the same statements about their team, as it is the difference between winning and losing. It is an age old conundrum.

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT Football is a simple game that we all play a part in complicating. This again is not new information and will always be the case, the challenge is to identify those areas we can improve on and work hard to do just that. I would like to finish by congratulating the boys on their efforts to date and believe there is much to look forward to as the season wears on.

Freddie (#16) scoring against Takapuna

Man of the match went to the effervescent Swede Freddie Ljungberg after capping off an excellent performance with a fine goal and having a great name. Regards Warren

RESERVES REPORT In the past two weeks we have travelled away to Papatoetoe and then to Mangere. Against Papatoetoe we were too strong player for player and had far more structure to our defence and flair to our attack and came away with a 6-0 win. The scoring opened in the 10th minute with a goal to Dylan who slotted home a Cal Waters square ball. The second goal followed not too long later starting inside our own half and ending up with Rob finishing a Dylan square ball. The third goal saw Zach Margison win the ball in a good tackle in the attacking third. He passed quickly to Cal Waters who played a one-two with Dylan and then finished well. Cal also scored the fourth goal on the end of an 11 pass sequence which again started inside our own half, taking us into half-time with a 4-0 lead. The second half continued in the same fashion but after a lot of wayward shooting and finishing we only netted twice; once for Zach who turned and shot 1st time from the edge of the box from a Cal Waters pass and Seth who pounced on a Rob cross that Jordan miss-timed and semi controlled for him to finish. Player of the day went to Zach Margison for his all round effort. Then the following week saw us at Centre Park against a hapless Mangere Reserve team that has had 43 goals scored against them and with zero points sit at the bottom of the ladder. Coach Nick who has inherited the team replaced 11 of the players recently and as expected had at least organised them to defend with structure and passion which we had trouble breaking down at times. While we played reasonably well with plenty of possession we were guilty throughout the game of making poor decisions especially with the midfield three and front three trying to force the ball forward too early which often resulted in a lot of in-complete passes and lost possession. We were also guilty of not finishing a number of excellent chances and at half time the game was deadlocked at nil all. At half time Alex W and Connor Watts came on to replace Dylan and Jordan who were to be on the 1st team bench. Zach moved into attacking midfield where he immedi-

12

RESERVES REPORT ately exerted a physical presence. Connor played out wide on the right and harassed Mangere’s left back with his blistering pace. The deadlock was finally broken in the 78th minute after Connor, who had beaten his man, was brought down just outside the box out wide. From the resulting well executed Tevin free kick, which was really just a short corner, Niall headed home to make it 1-0. Shortly afterwards, in the 80th minute, Zach’s powerful shot deflected off a Mangere defender and ballooned up over the advancing Mangere keeper to make it 2-0 which is how the game finished. Player of the day went to young Conor Tracey who was filling for Rene today in goal. While he didn’t have too much to do he did make a couple of good saves and he showed maturity in his talk and distribution. With these wins and other results going our way after 7 games Ellerslie now sit on top of the table with 16 points equal with Takapuna but with a better goal difference. I am very happy with the way we are tracking and also with the effort put in by the lads at training and generally to improve themselves and the team’s performance. Well done, keep it up so we can achieve our goals for the season. We didn’t have a game this weekend as we had a bye in the 1st round of the Reserves Knockout. Good Luck to Warren and the 1st team boys tonight Thanks and regards, Chris Wallace

THIRDS REPORT Last weekend Ellerslie 2nd string reserves took on Papkura in their first game of the Reserves Knockout Cup for 2014. Having beaten Papakura in the away league fixture over Easter the side went into the contest confident of a result. Starting on the front foot Left winger Rowan Matthews was put away on the left in the second minute only to be foiled attempting to cut inside the 2 centre backs. Not to be deterred however after a neat exchange in the midfield Rowan escaped his marker in a central area and delicately dinked the ball over the onrushing keeper to give Ellerslie the lead. The pass was supplied from Lewis Park operating in a deep lying CM position who was eager to show his range of passing probing the backline with guile consistently in the first half. After the first goal the game settled into a pattern with Papakura seeming overly concerned with Striker Warrick Hart whilst leaving both Wingers (Rowan Matthews and Josh Anthony) to their own devices allowing them to run amok. A brace from each player heading into the 2nd half gave Ellerslie a commanding position in the game. The second goal from Josh Anthony was of particular quality as he cut in from the right and unleashed a ferocious shot into the side netting, this is becoming something of a trademark move for the Winger. The preceding 10 minutes before half time Ellerslie made life a little hard for themselves trying to play with a little too much swagger and neglecting the basics. On the back of this Papakura won (wrongly) a penalty. After being fired into the box the ball popped up on the edge of the 18 yard area being caught on the chest by Ben Pauley. The referee position 15 foot behind the player hesitated before pointing to the spot for a Handball. Lloyd (Xmas) Huysmans dove to his left to save well however the ball was parried back towards the centre of the goal allowing the penalty taker to slot the rebound easily home. This gave Papakura a bit more belief allowing them to pressure Ellerslie more before halftime. Despite this pressure Ellerslie were easily able to cope with what was thrown at them with both Centre backs (Ross Borrill and Glen Jones) performing admirably. The half time chat was focused around coming out of the blocks early, looking to score to kill the contest. The lads responded at half time with Warrick Hart bending home a tidy finish from outside the box to keep up his record of over a goal a game for the team. The second half found a bit of a lull with Ellerslie applying pressure on the home side and the game becoming a little stretched as the game wore on and legs got tired. Ellerslie scored 2 more goals through Ben Pauley (Screamer) and Luke Dixon to end comfortable winners at 7-1. Every player had an outstanding game with special mentions going to Simon Harrison on his first start for the team, Simon was tenacious, energetic and played with good quality throughout the game. CB Ross Borril had an outstanding captains performance continuing to be one of the teams most consistent players. Rowan Matthews and Josh Anthony were always dangerous and Matt Sargent performed well on the right side of defence. Player of the match was deservedly given to Tim Covey who had an outstanding game at left back getting up and down the line with purpose and endeavour. He had his attacker in his pocket for the entire game putting in a tireless performance. Thanks also to the lads and ladies who came down and supported the team, we look forward to seeing more of you in the future. Ben Pauley
