PROUDLY PRESENTS

“THE AVE”

ELLERSLIE AFC VS EAST COAST BAYS

WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Welcome to all football fans, coaches, managers, parents and players to another night of football action at Michaels Ave - please enjoy the game tonight on our brand new next generation football turf which has been very well received by all our visitors so far. Supporters treat yourself to a hot coffee on the side-line or hot food from up in our clubrooms (for those who haven't been to Ellerslie for a while it’s on the other side of the YMCA). A special welcome to today’s main opposition East Coast Bays - the NRFL title in it’s three years of existence (since the NFF teams came back) has only been won by two teams, Bays and their rivals Olympic. It was rumoured that during the split between AFF and NFF teams that the ECB team playing in the NFF Premiership was one of the strongest teams assembled in modern day Northern League history. They lived up to that billing by taking the first title after the AFF/NFF unification by 12 points over Central. A runners up place to Bay Olympic last year proves this ECB team is not far off title winning pace - Willy and Rod and their team will be sure to arrive at “The Ave” tonight with a fire in their belly's as they continue to chase Birkenhead for top of the table honours. For the Ellerslie lads it’s another hard night against a premier league stalwart, we havn’t looked out of our depth in the league this season so I’m picking that in one of the next three games we will pull together a performance and pick up a 3 pointer (I’m happy to draw the other two :-P… ) The East Coast Bays reserves (or development squad as they refer to them) are going to be a tough challenge for Chris and his talented team, they knocked us out of the NRFL Knockout cup last year so we do know they are strong - and I don’t take too much out of their low league position - it’s going to be a doozy! After the game, regardless of results please join us for the after-match formalities in our clubrooms, again if you havn’t been here for a while they are on the other side of the YMCA with the entry just at the top of the hill…. See you up there! Regards - Tim Adams (Senior Chairman)

PRESIDENTS REPORT It is my pleasure, on behalf of the Ellerslie Football Club, to extend a warm welcome to our visitors from our fellow NRFL Premier and Reserve Club teams, together with our own Club members and supporters, to our recently completed new facilities at Michaels Avenue Reserve. We trust that you will all enjoy the benefits associated with the completion of Stage 1 of our Reserve’s Redevelopment Plan, and look forward in anticipation to further facilities improvements over the next year or so. A lot of publicity has surrounded Auckland Council’s recent commitment to embark upon a 10 year plan to significantly upgrade field capacities across Auckland, with a prime initiative being the installation of more artificial surfaces. As a Club that has been at the forefront of this , the opportunities that such surfaces present to coaches, players and supporters was brought into stark focus recently when within a number of hours of a typical Auckland tropical downpour, our members were able to continue their training and playing regimes uninterrupted, whilst other Clubs wrestled with the logistics of ground closures etc. The positivity that is now palpable around all aspects of this Club is fantastic to see and feel. The challenge for all of us is how to gain the best value and outcomes for our members from the significant investment both made, and still to be made, in the improvement of our facilities. But ultimately, facilities are only one aspect of this Club’s Strategic Plan and we all have a role to play in identifying ways and means by which our players, coaches and supporters can come together to make this Club, the Club of choice in our region. So, come and get involved. Best wishes to Warren Parke, Chris Wallace, their support staff and players in both the Premiers and Reserves, as they continue on their respective journeys tonight. Kind regards Mark B. Weipers President

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT Central turned up at Michaels Ave on the back of two losses, so were desperate to get points, and clearly had a plan to do so as they sat and let us have all the ball we wanted in the first 10 minutes. We appeared to get into the match comfortably and began to look like the dominant party until inexplicably we were caught on a counter attack. We lost possession down the right flank and Central moved the ball quickly across to their right sided midfield player who when pressed by Callum Brown turned inside and had the room to drive the ball into space for the flying wide man on the left.

We now had both fullbacks high and this stretched our centre backs as they looked to contain the danger. Mike Ritchie read the situation well but could not get across in time to prevent what was to unfold as a well -placed ball was driven into the near post area for the galloping Hagan to head home for an undeserved 1-0 lead. From this point on to the half time break we were awful. Try as we may we could not string passes together and we had no shape through the middle as we became too keen to correct our situation and failed to respect our structure.

Going forward in possession you can afford to get a bit out of shape as bodies are pushing on and you have the ball however on a turnover and out of possession you must defend with structure and discipline. At the break we talked about our system and our defensive duties in the middle of the pitch and that we were playing poorly and still only a goal down.. No need for any personnel changes as we had identified the problems and were confident we could turn things around. This we did and after starting well we continued through the second half to trouble Central.

Ollie Mullane and Jamie Olausen were very good again for us and Mike Ritchie enjoyed a good night and only came off as we nurse him back to full fitness. Eddie Sillars was the MOM for us as he worked very hard throughout and had a real impact in sorting out the issues of the first half. The team kept the ball well in the second half and we began to create

8

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT some very good chances as Nathan Palmer and Andy Wallace both came close to getting us on the score sheet. As the game wore on we introduced Warrick Hart, who was impressive, and pushed Will Roper out of the midfield and up front for the final 20 minutes to run alongside Waz. Dylan Manickum came into replace Will in midfield and we set out to come home strong. The last 15 minutes for me were perhaps our best of the match and though we came close and rattled the experienced opposition we were to fall short of our task and could not manage the draw that I felt we at least deserved. So another tight match that got away from us and the reality is that it gets no easier as the season moves on.

A nice home fixture to second division opposition in the Chatham Cup was looked forward to as I went into work on Monday only to hear that we had drawn Central. And my reaction....Great! We have discussed as a group, the desire to play in the Premier League and to play against top opposition, to get Central in the cup is fine with us.

Football at this level is a challenge and that is as it should be. Regards Warren

RESERVES REPORT Saturday May 11 saw us take on Central at home. As predicted Central came out firing and kept us under pressure for the entire game. We started a little slowly but quickly found our rhythm and then started exerting good pressure playing good football out from the back and through the midfield. During the first 15 minutes we had two or three real chances to score but the final header or shot was not well executed and the game remained scoreless. During this time Central also played well out from their back 4 and we had not worked out how to close them down effectively. On the 15 minute mark after a quick counter ball forward Central scored their opening goal when our scrambling defence failed to pick up on the edge of the box and the shot was fired past an unsighted Tim Hawes into the right hand corner. The game continued to be exciting and to be honest I never felt we were under pressure of loosing even though being down 1 goal as we continued to defend well and create chances but failed to finish and I felt it was just a matter of time. However at 27 mins, we lost the ball going forward with a wayward pass which was swooped on by Centrals defence and punched forward. Although my money was on Matt Scarbrough to win the aerial contest the Central attacker spoiled his jump and with Ryan O’Sullivan caught napping beside him the second Central striker pounced on the loose ball and scored a well taken goal beating an advancing Tim Hawes. The score remained and we went into half time 2nil down with nothing to show for our endeavours and at this stage I felt the game was still there for our taking as we continued to play well creating lots of chances but just failing to finish.

Shortly after the re-start for the second half we went down a 3 rd goal following a poor pass out from the back which was read, intercepted and finished very well. Now I was worried! Shortly later we made two tactical changes; Greg Crestanello on for a tiring Adam Foley and Callan Manickum on for Adam Scott at Left Wing/MF. This change brought immediate success as Callan ran at the central fullback a number of times and then in one foray finished off a parried shot, so with 20 minutes to go we were down 1 - 3. Shortly later Alex Witteveen beat the Central goalie to a ball and it rolled slowly across the goal for our second. At this stage with 10 minutes to go we found another gear and Central slowed, unaccustom to the large and fast field, and we kept pressing but could not find an equaliser, finishing 2 – 3 with our first loss for the season so far. For me (and I am sure the players) this result was very disappointing. On the whole we played well but with lapses of concentration at both ends of the park at crucial times we both allowed Central to score and failed to score our selves. While this “only” Reserves football it is very important for the players to take stock of the situation and also take responsibility for the result and their individual performances. All players in this side are potential first team players of the future and it is important for them to develop themselves to play the best they can in every outing for whatever team to develop consistency in their game. This consistency of effort and application starts at training. Each and every player must train the way they wish to play so it becomes a habit not just something that happens on Saturday in the game. Man of the match went to Myron Manickum for his general effort at training and for displaying improvement in many aspects of his role at left fullback. Well done to Central who played well throughout and especially to their goalie who kept them in the game with a number of fine saves. Finally I welcome East Coast Bays and their supporters to “The Ave” and I am sure we will all be treated to some entertaining and exciting football. All the best to Warren and the first team.

Kind Regards Chris Wallace - Reserves Coach

WHERE IS MATT? The number one question I am asked by the players revolves around Matt usually it’s where is matt or what time is matt getting there or do you know where Matt is - variants of the same question really. So where has Matt been? Off on a FIFA course in London about Football Medicine—he has been rubbing shoulders with an England manager with a lisp and a high profile Uruguayan (not the biting variety) - so welcome back Matt even if the guys don’t admit they missed you I did (even if it’s just so I can stop answering the above questions). I’m back! Did you miss me? For those who didn’t notice how much quieter things had gotten, or the fact that I seemed to have transformed from the one bearded fella into 3 younger and fitter fellas, I have been away for a little while. And for good reason – I went to London for the 22nd Annual Football Medicine last month. Sounds impressive doesn’t it? Sounds even more impressive if you recognise that almost all of the names of the speakers are the top dogs in the world of sports medicine and, more importantly, Football Medicine. It was a fantastic opportunity to hone my ever-growing knowledge about football injuries, and what the most up to date research shows, and what other tricks I could learn to help keep everyone performing. It was also an ideal situation to meet some true giants of the game – Alan Smith, Gus Poyet, Gianfranco Zola and Woy Hodgson.

14

WHERE IS MATT? I am not going to keep harping on about the conference, who I met, etc. No. I am going to summarise below exactly what the best of the best recommend players do regarding football injuries:

Prevention is better than cure – a simple 20min warm up program decreasing injury incidence by 65% Early intervention of injuries is key for early return to play – getting someone to assess any injury is best done as soon after it happens as possible Self-management is paramount – looking after yourself after sustaining injury (i.e. icing regularly, not drinking whilst injured, etc.) expedites recovery Adherence to prescribed (appropriate) rehab is a priority Trust your physiotherapist/doctor – do not second-guess their opinion or ask Dr Google, it’ll just lead to delayed recovery Stick to the time frames given – trying to get back too early will lead to on -going issues or development of new problems Not exactly new concepts are they? However, it is scary how often simple things like the above are ignored. Players should stick to the simple things and leave it to your health professionals to worry about the more complicated things. It’s why we’re here and why we put so much time and effort into making sure everybody is firing on all cylinders. Regards Matt Hylla EAFC Physio

FOOTBALL CLUB RANKINGS Green Island’s reign at the top of the NZ Football Club Rankings proved to be short-lived following one of the upsets of the Round 1 Chatham Cup games played in the weekend – their 4-2 defeat by Northern AFC means Green Island fall five places as a result. Wainuiomata’s home win over two times Chatham Cup winners Western Suburbs (who fall six places), and Canterbury University’s hammering of FC Twenty11 were the round’s other surprise results. Among the favourites for this year’s Chatham Cup are Wellington Olympic and Miramar Rangers – both safely negotiated tricky fixtures and feature strongly in this week’s Rankings. Incidentally, the Rankings scoring system is slightly more strongly weighted for Chatham Cup games. The only league games played were in the NRPL, and in the match of the round Birkenhead Utd continued their great start to the season with a 2-1 home win over 2012 Champions Bay Olympic. This not only cements Birkenhead’s place at the top of the NRPL, but it lifts them to #2 in the Rankings. Other big Rankings movers this week are Western (up six), Lower Hutt City (up seven), Halswell Utd (up six), Ellerslie AFC (down eight), and Nomads Utd (down six).
