PROUDLY PRESENTS

“THE AVE”

ELLERSLIE AFC VS TAKAPUNA AFC

WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Today we welcome Takapuna to “The Ave” for the first time since 2012 where we recorded a 4-0 win on home soil but were turned over 5-3 over at Taharoto Park courtesy of a Allan Pearce hatrick. Both sides today will field I imagine slightly different lineups to that season - infact in our case it’s a well published fact we have “lost” something like 14 players from our 20 man First Team squad from last season - a couple to Three Kings who almost single-handedly beat East Coast Bays 5-3 on Saturday (well scored all the goals anyway) and a couple to Takapuna of course in Tom Damon and Callum Brown. I’m sure both lads will be warmly received - although they should expect to receive a bit of a hard time from the KB’s on The Hill - such things are to be expected! First up Chris and his Reserves team have to bounce back after their first loss of the season against Melville on Paddock #28 at Gower Park - I’m sure the turf at “The Ave” will be a sight for sore eyes and hopefully we see a little more football this week from our development side.

The First Team are defending one of only two unbeaten records in the division - and after such a good start it would be great to complete the first month of the season with a win today and next week against cellar dwellers Papatoetoe - first things first though and Warren and his team will have to focus on a tough Takapuna team who look physically imposing and with strength and experience in their side our young side will be relying on Sean and Will’s leadership again. Special mention must also go to our 2nd Reserve team (the Ponies), who have bounced back from a first up loss to local rivals Fencibles by beating Lynn Avon, Oratia and Papakura to sit near the top of the table. Ben and his team are starting to hit their straps, and with Joshua Anthony and Warrick Hart both scoring goals for fun the team is really starting to gel - it’s great to see Ellerslie AFC represented so well in the Northern League. Today they visit Mangere Mountain for what should be another tough game against Mark O'Donnells Mountain Men - 3 points for them would place them nicely in the league. The Women’s First Team have drawn Drury away in the first round of the ASB Women’s Knockout Cup - that game is next Sunday at 11am at Drury Sports Complex - I’m sure the ladies would appreciate any support as they try to win a cup Ellerslie last held in 2001. Join us after today’s game in the clubrooms for some warm hospitably and cold drinks! Cheers Tim Adams Senior Club Chairman

LOTTO NRFL DIV 1 PREVIEW Melville United vs Ellerslie Gower Park Friday 18 April Kick-off: 2.45pm Referee: Mark Owens Only two places separate these sides on the table but there is a more significant gap in terms of points accrued, Ellerslie pocketing five to Melville’s one. Another win would put Ellerslie right amongst the leaders and, on a personal note, if Will Roper can add to his four goals over this double-header weekend then he will have emerged as a genuine contender for the golden boot. Manurewa vs Mt Albert-Ponsonby Memorial Park Friday 18 April Kick-off: 2.45pm Referee: Tom Woo Sitting at the foot of the table with no wins – and not even a point – to show for their efforts is far from the start Manurewa coaches Nathan Christie and Hoani Edwards would have wanted. But the club is well-accustomed to this division and there will surely be an upturn in fortunes at some stage in the near future. Mt Albert-Ponsonby boss Nick Sneddon will be determined to continue Manurewa’s poor start, however, as his side are tucked nicely behind the early leaders and are looking to launch a promotion bid. Metro vs Hibiscus Coast Phyllis Street Friday 18 April Kick-off: 2.45pm Referee: Carl Watkins The confidence levels of Metro took a hit last Friday with a 4-0 loss to Mt Albert in the New North Road derby and they will need to make sure that result does not turn into a bad run. Coach Jacob Mathews will be keen to make his side more difficult to break down after giving up half-time leads to settle for draws in both previous matches. The Coasters have won two out of three and can assume a lofty place in the table with another victory. North Shore United vs Eastern Suburbs Allen Hill Stadium Saturday 19 April Kick-off: 2.45pm Referee: Steven Black If the table is anything to go by, this should result in an away win as Eastern Suburbs are flying high while North Shore have only a point to show for their efforts. The confidence of Shore will also have been shaken by conceding seven against Mangere in the previous round so coach Dave Coshan has certainly had plenty to work on this week. Suburbs have not dropped points since drawing with Metro on the opening day. Papatoetoe vs Takapuna Murdoch Park Saturday 19 April Kick-off: 2.45pm Referee: Bruce Horrox Takapuna are right in touch with the leading sides and a win over struggling Papatoetoe would increase those stocks further to make them early contenders for promotion. One name likely to be on the scoresheet again is that of Lee Robinson, who has scored in every round and pocketed two doubles. Papatoetoe coach Paul Margison would love to have the services of such a lethal marksman as his side has managed to score in only one game. Western Springs vs Mangere United Seddon Fields Saturday 19 April Kick-off: 5pm Referee: Ben Norman This is the highlight of the day’s Division One action as Springs and Mangere are currently sharing the lead with Eastern Suburbs and the three points on offer could prove vital in the promotion push. The sides are very familiar with each other after engaging in a tightly-fought battle for last season’s second division title – eventually won by Springs – and will therefore be fully aware of their opponents’ strengths and weaknesses. It is quite obvious where one of Mangere’s major strengths lies, however – at the skilful feet of

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT First Team Match Report for Western Springs and Melville

First up we faced off against the league favourites in glamour club Western Springs - we were expecting a tough game and that’s exactly what we got from the men in green and white hoops. The game itself was a great watch for the neutral with plenty of skill and endeavour on show, the lack of goals didn’t equal a lack of quality as both teams defended very well. Springs had the better of the first half and we had the better of the second half - a late Will Roper header from a corner unlocked the side from Seddon fields, and from there we were probably a little unlucky not to go on and steal all three points. At the end of the game both teams were happy to take home a point and keep their unbeaten run alive. I overhead Neil Emblem telling his players after the game that Michaels Ave was a tough place to come and they should be grateful for a point - making “The Ave” a fortress was one of our major goals this year so hearing those comments made me happy.

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT Good Friday saw us take what should have been a brisk trip down south to Hamilton but due to every man and his dog leaving Auckland at the same time we were the trip took a little longer than planned - although we still had to wait, for a delayed kickoff as the home sides keeper arrived late from Auckland. The pitch was not the best for a good contest and this game turned into a bit of a slug-fest which wasn’t what we had hoped for as their side was full of experienced ex pro’s and current internationals. However our young side battled away and showed some serious ticker well beyond most of their years, and we came away with a 1-0 win from a place where most other sides will struggle. It turns out it was Melville’s first home loss since 2012 - some home record that. Andy Wallace struck the goal for us about 18 minutes into the first half and while we were unable to increase our lead (due to some factors outside of our control in one instance) we looked comfortable enough until the last couple of minutes which is when Man of the Match Sean Dowling stepped up and saved us from sharing the points with a fine save after a goalmouth scramble. There were some outstanding performances across the last week - Ryan O’Sullivan, and Dominic Higgins stood out in both games, as did Sean between the sticks. Special mention to the reserves and all the young players who have stepped up into first team football this early in the season - you are a credit to yourselves and coaches Chris and Grant and the great work they are doing! Cheers NRFL Coaching Group

The average age of the Ellerslie First Team who started the game against Melville was 24.5 years, while the bench was an average of 20.2 years

RESERVES REPORT Ellerslie NRFL Reserves Match Report for Saturday April 12th vs Western Springs Yet again we had another scorcher of a day. As Western Springs now have their own turf this home fixture was not so much an advantage as usual. Not a lot was known about Western Springs other than we had no doubt that they would have a decent squad such is the attraction of Neil Emblem and the future aspirations of the club to be in the top flight next year. We were not disappointed in this respect and it was soon obvious that we had our first test of the season on our hands. We started reasonably well with an accurate kick off from Adam Barkley which found wide ranging left winger Dylan Tate screaming up the side line. Dylan controlled well but then under extreme pressure from the Western Springs full back lost the ball over the line. This then set the scene for the day’s game with both sides able to get the ball forward quickly and efficiently but always covered by accurate defence with quickly applied pressure. In the first 15 minutes both sides had multiple chances to score. Twice we played out from the back and through good movement and accurate passing were able to get crosses into the box only to met by good defence. During the same period our custodian, Rene Aafjes twice denied the Western Springs strikers with well timed pressure and reflexes. The game continued in this fashion for the full 90 minutes with neither side capitalising on any opportunities and the game finished in a stalemate, nil – nil. It was an exciting and entertaining game played by two technical sides who valued possession and a strategy of play based around moving the ball quickly, supporting forward runs in numbers and when out of possession quickly compressing and compacting to offer solid and determined defensive lines. Player of the day for us was goalkeeper Rene who was outstanding in all aspects of play; shot stopping, communication distribution etc, well done Rene. Also mentioned were Callum Waters for his half time entry to the game and how effectively he exerted his influence with a great display of skill and some intelligent decision-making and also to Captain Mike Glenny who was tireless in the middle of the park. This draw has Ellerslie on 7 points and 3rd place after 3 games sitting 2 points off leaders Eastern Suburbs and Takapuna, both with 3 wins. By the time you read this we will

RESERVES REPORT have travelled to Melville in Hamilton on Good Friday for our fourth game. Welcome to Takapuna today, Easter Monday, for what I’m sure will be another exciting game as both teams are top of the table and will need to play well for the second time in four days to stay on top. Good luck to Warren and the 1st team boys. Continue with your consistent start to the season and let’s make sure it’s another 3 points in the bag! Thanks and regards Chris Wallace
