PROUDLY PRESENTS

“THE AVE”

ELLERSLIE AFC VS PAPATOETOE

WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Welcome to today’s main opposition Papatoetoe and their head coach Paul Margison for what should be two good NRFL games between two historic clubs. As you will probably see from the front and back covers of this very program we have just had a bit of a celebration of our history – albeit in great Ellerslie AFC style…. A little different to everyone else. The Heritage round shirts are a great reminder of what has come before us, it harnesses our greatest moment in the NRFL by re-imaging the design of the shirt we wore when we won the league in 1993. It’s just a shame we couldn’t get our original club logo on the shirt, that would have been the icing on the cake. With our establishment year on the shirt as well just under the logo we can celebrate our 61st season in existence – plus apart from all that they look bloody good too! History is great but it should help you achieve great things rather than hold you back and that’s exactly the way we look at it as a club, with this new group of players we hope to bounce back into the premier league at the first asking – the next 6 games will be hard but that’s the challenge infront of this group. It’s not just promotion we are after – we are in the position to achieve a rare but extremely difficult feat if we can win three NRFL titles in the one season – both our Reserves and our 2nd Reserves are winning their respective NRFL comp’s (which is no mean feat) and the respective coaching and management teams deserve a lot of plaudits for the way they have built their teams and of course their results on the park this season – good luck to Ben, Ross and Lewis and Chris and Marshy with their games today. Finally thanks to everyone who came to the clubs’ Comedy Night last weekend – it was another epic Ellerslie AFC event and massive thanks to Geoff and his team of amazing comedians who kindly offered to help us with our fundraiser – it was a great night for us and it’s something we hope to keep doing for another 10 years (no pressure Geoff!!). Enjoy your games today – we look forward to seeing you up at the clubrooms at the conclusion for some tasty hot food and a cold beverage! Cheers Tim Adams Senior Club Chairman

NRFL DIV ONE PREVIEW Metro vs Manurewa Phyllis Street 1 7:30pm Friday Jacob Matthews and his team will hope home field advantage and the recent goalscoring form of Anthony Hagan will be enough to get the points here and put them out of the relegation fight that is encompassing Manurewa and Papatoetoe. Manurewa on the other hand will be hoping to cause an upset and will be confident after getting a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture. TIP: Anything can happen on Friday nights at Phyllis street - but I’m going for a 4-2 to the home side Mangere vs Takapuna Centre Park 1 2:45pm Saturday The biggest piece of intrigue here is if the game will happen on the number one field after it was vandalised last week - Takapuna will be up for the game no matter what pitch they play on, after they feel a bit hard done by the last three weeks when they played well, but picked up no points. Mangere on the other hand have been unable to string victories together and have dropped from pre-season favourite to mid-table battlers TIP: Mangere are hard at home - but Taka deserve a bit of luck - going for Taka with a late winner, 2-1. Hibiscus Coast vs North Shore Utd Stanmore Bay 1 2:45pm Saturday This is a bit of a derby game for these sides - they ran side by side for the NRFL Div 2 title in 2012 and Shore felt a bit aggrieved when the title when north of them, Shore will also want to turn around a 4-2 loss at “The Hill” in the reverse fixture. Coast on the other hand need the points to stay in touch with the top 3 and stay clear of the red hot Melville team TIP: I think the table tells the story here, that and home advantage see’s the Coasters win 3-1. Western Springs vs Mt Albert Ponsonby Seddon Fields 1 5:00pm Saturday A bit unusual but this is my pick of the games this round - a local derby, and a springs stalwart as the assistant coach of the Anderson Park outfit. However 17 points separate the two sides and this will be a big hurdle for Nick and his team to overcome - Top spot beckons for the Seddon fields side and they will be desperate for the points TIP: Closer than the table would indicate but I think Springs will sneak it - 1-0. Our final game is postponed - Eastern Suburbs vs Melville. Melville play an important Chatham Cup quarter -final this weekend against Onehunga Sports instead, here at “The Ave” we are tipping a Melville win, they are cup specialists and to be honest the longer they are in the cup we feel the less threat they will be to us so it works both ways for us.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT As one of my final acts this season, I would like to quickly put down a few thoughts before I leave the club (don’t panic, I fully intend on returning!) For those who don’t know, I have been given the opportunity to ply my trade in a voluntary capacity at The Craig Bellamy Founda+on in Sierra Leone. This is an academy tailored to a.rac+ng young footballers to the academy to assist with schooling with the hope that they then either get scholarships to colleges, get scouted by top clubs, or use their new-found knowledge to help the local communi+es. I am honoured and privileged to be offered the role, and hope I can be of some use there! I have also been given the opportunity to work with the Sierra Leone Na+onal Team as they strive for African Cup of Na+ons qualifica+on. They have been drawn in the same group as DR Congo, Cote d’Ivoire and Cameroon, so this is also a very exci+ng opportunity to be involved in high quality interna+onal football. Before I leave, I would like to thank absolutely everybody, both past and present, for all of the highs (Promo+on, Warrick Hart’s ‘unique’ goal against Ngongotaha, bus trips, and various club nights), and lows (suppor+ng me through some of my own personal darkest +mes) throughout the en+re club for the last 6 seasons! If it wasn’t for the family atmosphere that is so firmly established at Ellerslie AFC, this club would be a shadow of its present self, especially with some of the ‘larger characters’ at the club – you know who you are. I would also like to make special men+on of some par+cular people: Warren Parke. I joined Ellerslie at the same +me that Warren took charge of the First Team. He very quickly made me feel very welcome and involved with the club at all levels. His pa+ence is second to none, especially when it comes to my trying to ins+gate protocols such as The 11+, and listening to my opinions regarding the team, tac+cs and opposi+on (it’s hard not to learn a few things whilst si?ng next to him in the dugout!). There is no doubt that Warren is the right man for this job, his passion, vision and tenacity are only few of his many, many quali+es. Carol Ritchie. My (and everyone else’s) Ellerslie Mum! Carol is just one of the aforemen+oned personali+es of Ellerslie. The dedica+on and love that the

6

IN THE SPOTLIGHT whole Ritchie ‘clan’ have towards the club is unfathomable. Carol has never failed to be there when needed, always with a wine and a laugh, whether on the sideline, in the club, or looking aBer “exhausted” club members at the weekend and allowing us to stay at “Hotel Ritchie”. Tim Adams. I have known Tim with all of his various hats – player, manager, Chairman – and despite the variety of roles, the passion is unwavering. The sheer volume of work, +me and effort he puts into the club to make everyone’s life that much easier is astounding. So much so that I can even look past the fact that he is a Liverpool supporter! Ellerslie is lucky to have Tim and I can only hope that it con+nues for a long +me! Finally, the players. From all teams, at all age groups, regardless of my level of direct involvement. ABer all, the players are what makes the club what it is. I would not have loved my +me at the club as much as I have, not made the firm lifelong friends that I have, nor would have the stories to regale that I have without the players. I will (hopefully) only be away for a season or two, but who knows what life may bring. So I will say this: THANK YOU everybody for making my +me at the club that I truly love, as fantas+c as it was! I shall miss you all, but remember, when I return, mine’s a Bulmers.

Cheers Ma.

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT We played away on Saturday to Takapuna, having beaten them6-1 earlier in the season and while we expected a tough match we knew they have been struggling with form so were confident that with a good performance we would take the 3 points on Offer. Unfortunately we started badly and that theme ran on for most of the match albeit for a few periods of good possession and some good opportuni+es on goal. Takapuna persist with playing three at the back and can be difficult to break down through the middle, and they have an excellent midfield that technically should outplay most teams. Why that isn't the case is for others to speculate, but on papaer they are a sound ouTit. When Nathan Palmer was played a loose ball from a Takapuna player early in the second half he tucked it beyond the advancing keeper for a surprising 1- 0 lead. We had a good spell aBer this and I thought that was the icebreaker and we would start playing. This was not the case and Takapuna to their credit kept at us. When we didn't clear our lines well enough defending a corner, and failed to press the ball ,it was driven home for an equaliser with about 15 minutes to play. We had been defending well to that point and really worked hard throughout the team, but when that goal was scored the game had 1-1 wri.en all over it.. Takapuna wanted more and pushed on for the win but when you are having a difficult season as they are things keep going against you and they succummed to a wonderful Adam Barkley strike with 5 minutes to go. We then decided to shut the game out and sacrificed Nathan Palmer for a third centre back and bought Freddie Ljungberg on to help deal with what I expected would be a barage of balls into the box in the final minutes. It finished 2-1 to us and while Takapuna obviously felt agrieved that they didn't get something out of the match they would be the first to admit, if the game had gone the other way they would not have given us a thought.

10

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT Adam Barkley picked up man of the match for a strong performance against experienced players and a cracking goal. Regards Warren Parke

RESERVES REPORT Chris, Marshy and his team last Saturday took on Takapuna Reserves at Taharoto # 1 – it was a nice enough day apart from the chilling cold wind, but the surface of the pitch was excellent – probably the best natural surface we have played on this year. Takapuna Reserves are si?ng in 5th place and are one of the teams chasing the +tle (+ed on points with 3rd North Shore and 4th Eastern Suburbs), so this game was an important one to try and increase the buffer we had at the top, a slip up would have given Melville great confidence in chasing us down. In the reverse fixture in round 5 we beat Takapuna 4-0 but from memory they put up a tough challenge and were hard to break down, so we knew today’s game was important and to start well was crucial. Takapuna must have been also talking about star+ng strong as the opening 20 or 30 mins was pre.y even with both teams keen to try and test the other early. Whilst we had some decent periods of possession we were unable to link up in the final third to produce anything of any great quality. The lads in Yellow and Blue looked dangerous on the counter, but they too lacked any last pass quality and their promising a.acks were in the end well dealt with by the back four lead by skipper for the day Niall Bell. Come the second half and a few changes as Mike Glenny disappeared to first team duty and young Alex Clark coming on for his 3rd reserves appearance – it was those fresh legs and our pa+ence in the game that finally paid dividends as Alex po.ed two late goals to win the crucial 3 points – Taka may have felt their courageous performance deserved more but when you are a team who are used to winning and are playing well the rub of the green is never too far away. That’s not to say we didn’t earn the points, we did – but it’s one of football’s great irony’s that some+mes both teams deserve points for their efforts.

14

RESERVES REPORT So one game less on the march to the +tle and there were impressive performances from ACFC U17’s Tournament winning keeper Connor Tracey in goal (his 2nd appearance), and centre back duo of Niall and Seb Poelman also had solid games, but the MOM 3 points went to Alex for his late contribu+on of two goals which takes his tally now to 3 games for 3 goals – not bad! This weekend the team face off against Papatoetoe, and we can’t afford to take them lightly – they will have all sorts of mo+va+on to play well and as the Pheonix showed on Wednesday night anything can happen so we will again need to be at our best at Fortress Michaels Ave. Best of luck guys and great work so far this season Cheers Tim
