“THE AVE”
ELLERSLIE VS METRO
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Welcome to the final edition of the 2014 Match day programs – today we feature the key NRFL Div 1 clash between Ellerslie and Metro, with the stakes high for the home team and pride on the line for the visitors. We are sure Jacob and his side will be up for the game today and we look forward to seeing how the fixture plays out – so welcome to Metro and their players and supporters! Today doesn’t quite mark the end of the season for the club – September is a busy month for us, with several teams still playing league games until mid Sep and a few teams still in the running for the AFF Northern Knockout Cup and our third team is in a NRFL Knockout Final! – also our annual Steve Knapp Cup and Kiwi’s vs The Rest tournaments feature as well – this all culminates in the club prize-giving on the 27th September – tickets are now available up at the club for prizegiving, they are $25 a head and include a light meal. Tickets are limited to 160 and they do sell out (every year) and there is no door sales so please get in quick! The other exciting things for the club as we move towards the “off-season” is the Napier U19’s Tournament – this year’s side as previously reported in this publication is led by ACFC U17’s winning coach Terry Torrens. Training for this side will commence the week after the Secondary Schools tournament – email invites to players are being finalised as we speak. Also of interest might be the ASB Premiership and in particular in regards to Ellerslie the ASB Youth League – as we look to have quite a club representation between Auckland City and Auckland United – we will keep all the fans updated via facebook and twitter as to who is in and who is out and when the league starts in October when they are playing. Of course as each season passes – there are things to remember and mourn as well as celebrate – with this in mind we would like to take a special moment to mention a great Ellerslie AFC club man who passed last week. Con Ritchie, a former President/Chairman and one of the famous surnames that has made a massive difference to the club – our thoughts go out to George, Stew, Carol and their families. People like Con helped this club form the identity that we are proud of today! “it’s their efforts yesterday that makes it easy for us to continue today” Good luck to everyone playing, coaching, managing or supporting this weekend – if you’re at Michaels Ave please pop up to the clubrooms and join us for a cold beverage or some hot food, we would love to see you up there and have a yarn about your game! Cheers Tim Adams Senior Club Chairman

LOTTO NRFL AWARDS Following more than 1850 responses in the opening stage of public voting for the Lotto NRFL Awards, stage two has now opened as the search to find the competition’s top performers heats up. A total of 44 players across the four divisions of the Lotto NRFL competition were selected as the best in their respective teams by open public voting which closed last week. Stage two of the process pits those winners against each other within the respective divisions, finding the four player of the year award winners. Goal scorers have been given a high value by the public with Golden Boot leaders in each division progressing to the second stage. Michael Gwyther (Glenfield), Lee Robinson (Takapuna) and Harry Hillary-Jenkins (Papakura) are all in the frame for the top honour in the Premier League, Division One and Division Two respectively while Helen Collins (Claudelands) is among the contenders in the Women’s Premier League. A host of midfielders also feature but the defensive side of the game has not been neglected by observers. Several defenders – including Joseph Dawkins (Central), Aaron Scott (Melville) and Ian Hogg (Metro) – have all been recognised, as have a trio of goalkeepers in Sean Dowling (Ellerslie), Rivalina Fuimaono (Papatoetoe) and Abby Roper (Western Springs). The voting process has highlighted the quality of player currently plying their trade in the Lotto NRFL with five All Whites – Scott, Hogg, Cameron Lindsay (Onehunga Sports), David Mulligan (Forrest Hill-Milford) and Jarrod Smith (Birkenhead) – all being selected, as well as three Football Ferns in Collins, Rebecca Tegg (Eastern Suburbs) and Daisy Cleverley (Forrest Hill-Milford). Futsal Whites captain, and AFF Futsal Development Officer, Marvin Eakins has likewise been voted as a finalist in Division One. In the coach of the year category, voters could not separate the efforts of Duncan Lowry (Tauranga) and Jason Heather (Papakura) in Division Two so both will progress to the next stage, along with Birkenhead’s Paul Hobson (Premier League), Eastern Suburbs’ Mark Holt (Division One) and Forrest Hill’s Mauro Donoso (Women’s Premier League). Lowry has led Tauranga to the Division Two title while Heather is on the verge of steering his charges to an immediate promotion on Papakura’s return to the Lotto NRFL this season. Hobson’s Birkenhead are among the sides in the frame to finish second in the Premier League, which would represent an impressive level of consistency after last season’s runners-up placing. Holt has already secured promotion for Suburbs and is now fighting with Western Springs for the first division title while Donoso’s Forrest-Hill are overwhelming favourites to triumph in the women’s league. Auckland Football CEO David Parker is delighted to have received another positive response from voters following last year’s introduction of the public-based system. "The popularity of the voting process has continued with a significant increase in the numbers," he says. "It has again served to lift the interest surrounding the league at this time of the season and, as we enter the second stage of voting, the excitement is set to heighten even more." Over the coming days, Auckland Football will take a closer look at some of the players and coaches in line for the awards before stage two voting closes on September 15.

ASB PREMIERSHIP NEWS Jump onto www.aff.org.nz to vote!
New Zealand Football announced on Friday the participants and format for the 2014-2015 ASB Premiership. In addition to the eight returning ASB Premiership franchises from the 20132014 season, the Wellington Phoenix have been included in a nine-team national league. The Wanderers SC side, a wider group of New Zealand players continuing preparations for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand in 2015, are included for the second year of their two-season placement. Three bids for inclusion in the competition were unsuccessful for the coming season with ASB Youth League franchises Auckland United, Nelson Marlborough Falcons and YoungHeart Manawatu left out of the mix. New Zealand Football CEO Andy Martin is excited at the new composition of the league which features a key change in requiring 50 percent of match-day squads come from players eligible to play for the All Whites. “We’re delighted to have reached the position we have on the format of the 2014-15 ASB Premiership season,” Martin said. “The addition of the Wellington Phoenix team strengthens both the A-League franchise and the overall quality of our national competition which is very important. “You need only take a look at some of the top nations at the World Cup and all of them, to some extent, can point to a strong domestic competition playing a key role in the success of their national sides and New Zealand is no different. “The end game is to provide a product which serves as a domestic focal point for the game and inspires all of our respective stakeholders.” Martin acknowledged the disappointment of the three unsuccessful league bids but highlighted the way forward with the intent to develop what is a key point in the New Zealand Football pathway. “While we weren’t in a position to include Auckland United, Nelson Marlborough Falcons and YoungHeart Manawatu for this season, they have been given detailed feedback around their bids. “In the coming months we will be working with each of them to help them bridge the gap between their current position and that of being a viable long-term member of a strong national competition. "Hopefully they will then be in a much stronger position to re-apply next time around.” The nine-team, two-round ASB Premiership competition kicks off on October 25 with the top four teams then contesting the home-and-away playoffs before the Grand Final. The pre-season ASB Charity Cup fixture between Auckland City and Team Wellington is on Saturday 19 October. Meanwhile, the ASB Youth League will also change format for the 2014-15 season with the competition for U-20 players adopting a full national one-round league set-up after a Northern-Southern Conference split with a Grand Final in recent seasons. The 12 franchises involved in the 2013-14 season will again contest the competition. FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT We needed to win at Hibiscus Coast last Saturday to only need a win tonight against Metro to gain promotion and Premier League Football at Michaels Ave Next Season. Hibiscus were a mathematical chance to go up so were keen to make the afternoon difficult for us. We started well enough with some tidy football that ended with Dylan Tate driving his early strike against the sprawling Hibs Goalkeeper. Then an in-swinging corner from captain Will Roper saw the Hibs keeper drop the ball then help put the ball in his own net. The referee did not blow for a challenge on the keeper until he saw the ball go over the line then gave Hibs a free kick. Still trying to work that one out, was he playing advantage thinking Hibs would get control on their own goal line and break out, going up the field to score against us? We were playing some nice football at times and created some good chances, but again lacked a clinical finish. This offered Hibs a life line and with half an hour gone they scored a very tidy goal from their striker Lawson and then lifted their game. It was right on the break that we equalized with Adam Barkley striking from distance, putting us back into the match. All the right things were said at oranges, but talk is cheap and we stumbled early into the second half with some soft defending and watched as Hibs Struck from the edge of the penalty area. We put our game faces on and got playing again but we were shy in the challenges and were pushed around too easily. It was a poor challenge though on Will Roper that saw his afternoon end, and this began our chase really, as changes were now forced on us. We introduced Alex Witteveen and moved young Dylan Tate out wide left. We left Nathan Palmer in behind Alex and his high work rate continued. Not long after we went three at the back, bringing Adam Scott on to partner the impressive Freddie Ljungberg and Mike Glenny at the back replacing Ollie Mullane who has been struggling with injury most of the season, and in doing so we pushed Zac Rathbone into a Screening role infront of the three so allowing the hard working Martin Pike and the effervescent Adam Barkley to get forward more. We continued to create chances and Dominic Higgins had the left hand side of Hibs team all over the place at times with his weaving runs. With about 10 mins to go Zac Rathbone pulled his hamstring and we replaced him with Monju Shohei to maintain the same screen that Zac had played in front

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT of our back 3. All was in vain however as the clock was still winding down as it does. Probably the best chance was a searing shot from Martin Pike from a lovely cut back ball from Dom Higgins after another mazy run. Pikey met the ball sweetly but Fletcher in the Hibs goal pulled off a very good save to give Hibs the 3 points they worked hard for. Adam Barkley was our MOM for another sharp display. Given that this is the last home match of the season for 2014 I would like to recognize the efforts of the players and Nick Russo, Paul Hooper and Tim Adams with the 1st team, it has been another enjoyable season punctuated with the many dramas, highs and lows that have become part of the way we do things around here. Big thanks also to the support we have received over the last 8 months. Regards Warren

RESERVES REPORT Good aFernoon and welcome to the Avenue. This is the last match day write up for 2014 and Chris, James and I along with the en6re Reserve Team squad would like to thank all of you that have come down throughout the season and supported our side, it means a lot to us and we hope to see you again in season 2015. On Wednesday night last week the team played a catch up fixture against North Shore Utd here at Michaels Ave. North Shore were our first fixture for the year and we beat them 5-1 at Allen Hill Oval back in March, since then they had risen to second in our league, we needed one point from this game to win the NRFL Div1 Reserves League. The first half started with a very strong penalty shout to Callum Waters who one on one with the keeper pushed the ball past him and got cleaned out, in what was the first of many missed calls by an inexperienced referee a goal kick was given. North Shore were very comba6ve and played worthy of a team in 2nd place. At half 6me the score was 0-0, of note Tevin Smith picked up his 5th yellow card for the season and would have to sit out the upcoming Saturday game. The second half was filled with thrust and parry style football and as the fog rolled in around the ground both teams had opportuni6es to win the match, we brought on young U19s player Art Twigg who went on up front and we moved Alex Wi eveen into a wide role, Alex worked well out wide crea6ng some good late opportuni6es. The match however ended 0-0. 3 points for player of the day went to Seb Poelman for a dominant role in the heart of defence and special thanks to Art and GK Connor Tracey for sloJng in seamlessly. So a league won and celebrated by the team, it is a massive achievement to win any league let alone an NRFL and I can speak from experience and say this will be something to be treasured and reflected on over the years. On to Saturday, away to Hibiscus Coast on a sunny late winters day. The 6tle in the bag, many players out with first team du6es or suspension also others who had played 90 minutes the night before, we were struggling to put out 11 fresh players. Added to the star6ng lineup for the game were Ellerslie stalwart Peter Algie and trading coaches bench for star6ng striker Grant Marshall also onto the pine came First Team Assistant Coach Paul Hooper. The team were very mo6vated to carry the successful season through with just the one defeat. Star6ng the match playing a 3-5-2 forma6on we had the be er of the opening exchanges and were crea6ng half chances with good work in the middle of the park from Mladen Milovanovic and Callum Waters. Hibiscus came back into the later part
12
RESERVES REPORT of the half and both teams went to the break lamen6ng missed opportuni6es to be in front. The arm wrestle con6nued through the second half, Paul Hooper came on for Grant Marshall and slo ed into the midfield with his usual 6me, vision and simplicity, Shohei Monju replaced Callum Waters at half 6me and started to make his presence felt including a shot that ra led the cross bar. We won a penalty from a Monju ball out to Marcus Wright on the leF wing who advanced the ball and delivered a text book cross which was being lined up by effec6ve striker Rob Hall. Rob was fouled before the ball arrived and the penalty awarded. The Hibiscus Coast GK had gone down in the penalty incident and received lengthy treatment before the kick could be taken. Seb Poelman paid off the coaches and stepped forward to calmly slot away the penalty. Hibiscus never laid down and with only 10 minutes to play latched onto a ball that we failed to clear and slo ed a deserved equalizer. Final score 1-1. Special men6on to Peter Algie for his 90 minute effort and also to the two wing backs Senna Shimotsuma and Marcus Wright and central midfielder Seth Armstrong all whom had played 90 minutes the night before for the U19s and worked 6relessly. 3 points for player of the day went to Mladen Milovanovic who had one of his finest games of 2014, a talented midfield player who we look forward to seeing more of next year. Finally welcome to Metro FC who have had close games recently against quality opposi6on in Western Springs and Takapuna. With games in hand, we know you will be mo6vated to finish your season as high up the table as possible and we are expec6ng a spirited encounter. Kind Regards, Grant Marshall

NRFL DIV ONE PREVIEW Mangere vs Hibiscus Coast Centre Park 1 2:45pm Saturday A tight game this – I wasn’t overly impressed with either team when I saw them in action in the second round, but on the Centre Park pitch and with the unstructured Fijian style I think Mangere might just do this. It will be close though PICK: Mangere by 1 goal
Melville vs North Shore Gower Park 1 2:45pm Saturday Melville have had their ups and downs at home this season, losing to MAP recently not one of the highlights – Shore in general have been on the improve, a tight loss to Ellerslie and then a draw against Western Springs is promising, will they have enough to hold a Melville team who have promotion in their sights? PICK: Heart says draw, head says Melville to sneak it
Eastern Suburbs vs Mt Albert Ponsonby Madills Farm 1 2:45pm Saturday On paper this looks like a bit of a given to Suburbs but MAP have really mixed great with abysmal in recent weeks, which can be hard to play against – so Suburbs may find this a tricky fixture and with Springs drawing last week the chase for the title has been thrown wide open. PICK: Suburbs on Madills have shown some bottle – will battle out a 1-0 victory
Takapuna vs Manurewa Taharoto Park 1 2:45pm Saturday Sadly for Rewa I just don’t see them getting anything out of this game – Taka have finally hit some form and will be looking to Lee Robinson and Aaran Hamilton (who scored a screamer against Metro) to post up a big total – I guess the only risk is Taka have been prone to the odd shocker all season so will they trip up on this fixture, Rewa will hope so as these three points (or 1 point) could be the difference for them PICK: Rewa to start on fire – Taka to come back from behind to win 4-1 Western Springs vs Papatoetoe Seddon Fields 1 5:00pm Saturday Another pretty one-sided contest on paper – however Springs had a shocker against ‘Toe last time at Murdoch so how will the react to this one? Popular opinion is that Papatoetoe are offering slightly more than Rewa on the field, I’m not 100% sure of that though – I could see Papatoetoe troubling Springs with their organisation but for me this is a hoops victory – a lock! PICK: Western Springs – 3 zip.
