PROUDLY PRESENTS
“THE AVE”
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Welcome to today’s main visitors Waitakere City – they don’t really need much of an introduction to Michaels Ave as they have played more here than at Fred Taylor in June – however the Ellerslie lad’s can’t afford to extend them too much hospitality as points are at a premium for both clubs at this stage in the season. Colin Tua’s team has had a much superior set of results since the beginning of June when they had a few players join from parent club Waitakere United, whilst they haven’t really put any major points on the board they have pushed some of the top teams close during that period so league positions don’t really accurately portray how tight tonight’s game will be – If Waitakere lose tonight and Three Kings beat Manurewa in an earlier game on Saturday then Waitakere will be a whopping 9 points from safety with only 8 games to go. For Ellerslie the scenario is equally bleak if Waitakere win and Manurewa turn Three Kings over even though we will still be sitting 4th from bottom in that scenario Three Kings will only be 1 point back (with a game in hand) whilst Manurewa will sit 4 points back and Waitakere 5 – hardly a commanding buffer!! The curtain-raiser is a slightly different prospect, the high flying Ellerslie reserves need to keep their performance levels up and it’s against teams like Waitakere who are desperate for points that slipups happen – it should be a good game with lot’s of young and up and coming talent on show and a fitting opener for the First Team clash. Please enjoy the game and do so with respect of fellow supporters and members by behaving in a positive and supporting manner, there is an evening liquor ban in effect at the Park so please abide by that as well. The clubrooms will be open before during and after the game and the kitchen is also open and ready to serve some tasty hot food – remember any drinks purchased in the clubrooms cannot be taken outside – this is a condition of our licence and is very seriously enforced.
Lastly the best of luck to all Ellerslie teams this weekend and I look forward to hearing tales about your victory’s or agonising last minute defeats in the clubrooms after all the dust (or mud) settles. Cheers Tim Adams EAFC Senior Chairman

CLUB INFORMATION: Waitakere City Football Club was formed to compete in the National League in 1989, as a composite team involving clubs from West Auckland. In 1991, Waitakere City moved from their Western Springs headquarters, following an amalgamation with Massey AFC (formed in 1976), to the current facilities at Fred Taylor Park, located in Whenuapai.
Since that time, Waitakere City has established itself as one of the top teams in the country, both in terms of results and entertainment value.

FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT Firstly let me apologise to the fans and supporters of the club as several high profile players which were touted to be joining the club via transfer all fell over for a variety of reasons. Firstly we had Carlos Hernandez who wasn’t able to secure a visa in time before the transfer window closed, similarly with Andrew Durante we were unable to negotiate our way through all the red tape regarding his eligibility at the moment, so his transfer fell over as well. Leo’s transfer was all good to go but a last minute medical discovered a long standing injury so we pulled out of that one and lastly Paul Ifill who was meant to be our marquee signing – well that didn’t last long – after the first night of training Paul had an altercation with our two existing English lads and long story short it was either Paul or them – so we choose to keep our two English bulldogs and release Paul to play against Manchester United for the A -Stars. So all our wheeling and dealing has left us with no new signings over the busy June period, but that’s ok as we feel we had a pretty strong squad to start off with! In the last couple of week’s we have played Waitakere 1 and a half times and played a friendly against North Shore – not the most productive of months to be honest but those were the cards we were dealt so we have to make the best of the situation. Over the two games against Waitakere we feel we have held our own, a couple of little errors in each game lead to Waitakere goals but we showed that we can score against them (well Warrick did – 3 in 3!). It will be interesting to see if Roy Krishna plays today as the rumours are he is off to Aussie for a stint in state football, possibly to chase an A-league contract? He certainly from what we have seen would be worth a punt for a team a little short on pace and firepower, still a bit confused as to why the Nix haven’t looked at him again! Against North Shore we took the chance to bring some of the guys in who have played so well in reserves and in cameo’s for the first team this year – Freddy and Shaggy came into the backline and performed well and were a large part of the clean sheet we kept, as was stand in keeper Will Roper who
6
FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT kept a clean sheet and was proud of it! Alex Witteveen came in up front and after a couple of games with the team is getting better and better each minute he spends on the pitch, our last Reserves player was the very special Jordan Oosterhof – still at high school and in his first full year with the reserves Jordy has been a nightmare for oppositions this year, playing in a wide role or as a false 9 through the middle – his chance in the first team was deserved and both he and Alex scored goals in this friendly match and while officially they didn’t count they both proved they have some futures ahead of them if they keep working and learning. Good luck to Chris and the reserves in the curtain raiser today – some great work coming from the reserve team, Chris and Marshy have that team humming and it’s of great benefit to the first team and the club to see those guys learning and developing. For the first team lads this is a classic 6 pointer game – probably our most important of the year…. FIRE UP!!
Cheers First Team Manager

RESERVES MATCH REPORT Reserves Match Report, June 29, 2013 v North Shore United – Reserves Knock-Out Cup Semi Final. On a glorious winters day we lined up at 12.30 against 1st Division Reserves, North Shore United, for what we expected to be a tough battle against a team desperate to gain some honours this season. With some inside knowledge we learned that they were fielding a number of regular 1st team players in an effort to continue their hitherto winning form against Premier Reserve teams so far in the cup. In usual fashion we started well knocking the ball around ensuring North Shore had to work hard to gain possession on the huge Michaels Ave pitch. With superior technical skills, speed and fitness the Ellerslie lads soon started to exert dominance however after half an hour we only had two disallowed goals (Callan Manickum offside from a free-kick and Matt Scarborough adjudged to have fouled the keeper when heading??) to show for their efforts.
Around 35 minutes in Monju, who had rotated forward down the right wing, knocked in great ball to Jordy who beat the keeper to the ball and after some sloppy defending his shot was deflected by a defender into his own net, 1-0. A short time later, after a similar move, Jordy finished again for his second, 2-0, halftime. The half time talk was about forgetting the score Alex placing the ball for a free kick line and starting again as if it were nil all. Also more attention to attacking crosses into the box and getting the weight right on balls threaded through their defence. North Shore came out chasing the game in the second half and went to a back three in an effort to overload our midfield three of Callum Waters, Callan Manickum and Monju Shoei who were dominating. Although we started well continuing on from the first half, North Shore got 1 back after a defensive lapse saw Tim drawn out to compete for a ball on the edge of his box but the striker won the race and deftly chipped the ball into the goal. In the 60th minute Zach came on for Adam Scott and immediately started troubling
12
RESERVES MATCH REPORT North Shores back three with his pace. In the 70th minute after North Shore failed to clear a well taken corner, Jordy fired a great ball back into the penalty box form the right side and Freddie headed home for our 3rd. A short time later Myron received a yellow for time wasting (???) and was replaced by Ben Shaw. In the 75th minute Callum Waters advanced down the right flank after some very good passing and crossed a nice square ball for Alex who eluded the keeper and fired home for our fourth. Lewis then replaced Callan in the middle of the park for the final 15 minutes. The game finished with a well deserved 4-1 win to Ellerslie taking them to the final which will be against Birkenhead some time later in the season. While several players played well, man of the match went to Freddie for his Callan Manickum tireless effort and NRFL Reserves Knockout Cup putting his body on the line several times in front of goal. Quarter Finals Again I was very proud of the lads who Birkenhead 4, East Coast Bays 1 had trained with great intensity all week Bay Olympic 1, North Shore 7 and then played the game plan defending Hamilton Wanderers 3, Onehunga Sports 1 well in numbers and then breaking forEllerslie AFC 6, Ngaruawahia 2 ward quickly. The football was entertaining and I look forward today’s encounter Semi Finals against Waitakere which I am sure will be Ellerslie AFC 4, North Shore 1 well contested and an equally exciting Hamilton Wanderers 2, Birkenhead 3 game. Welcome to Waitakere and their supporters and I wish all the best to WarFinal ren and the first team lads in their game. Ellerslie AFC vs Birkenhead (venue TBC)
Thanks and regards Chris Wallace.

NRFL PREMIER LEAGUE RE-CAPS Two-time defending champions Bay Olympic continued their move up the Lotto NRFL Men’s Premier League table on Saturday with a 2-2 draw with Hamilton Wanderers at Olympic Park. Unbeaten in June, including league and Chatham Cup victories over East Coast Bays AFC, Shane Knowles side recovered after falling behind twice against Wanderers to earn a point. David Smith gave the visitors an 11th minute lead which was cancelled out nine minutes later by James Pritchett. Scoring his fourth goal of the league season, Jarrod Young restored the advantage to Mark Cossey’s team from the penalty spot in first half stoppage time with what seemed the final scoring act until Bay Olympic substitute Yoji Tanabe found the home side’s second equaliser of the day with four minutes remaining. Hamilton inched ahead of East Coast Bays into second place with the result while Bay Olympic moved fifth, nine points behind league leaders Birkenhead. Saturday’s match at Olympic Park was the only action of the weekend with three matches postponed due third round ASB Chatham Cup replays while Three Kings United’s home clash with Onehunga Sports was lost to do ground closures at Keith Hay Park. PREMIER CLUB RANKINGS While it was the Chatham Cup games that grabbed the headlines over the weekend, there was also plenty of league action around the country. In the end it all added up to some minor shuffling at the top of the pack, and few major movers in the Rankings. First things first, NRPL league leaders Birkenhead Utd came though their cup tie with an extra time win over NR Division 1 leaders Glenfield Rovers; in spite of the win Birkenhead Utd drop one place. Things were more clear-cut in Waitakere City’s 3-1 away win over Ellerslie AFC; City rise three places in the Rankings on the back of that win, but the question on everyone’s lips is can they stave off relegation? Finally in the south, Caversham AFC with three late goals eventually ran out 4 -0 winners over Dunedin Technical, ‘The Train’ climb one place to #4, whereas Tech (with the mostly aptly named coach in NZ football right now – Mike Fridge) tumble seven spots to #13. There was a full complement of league games in the CPL, where Wellington Olympic (falling one spot to #3) and Miramar Rangers (climbing one to #6) continue to dominate. Western Suburbs are a big mover from the CPL - up five places to #16 by virtue of a fine 4-1 away win over Upper Hutt City. In the MPL the title race remains very tight - Ferrymead Bays (up one to #7) bounced back from a couple of bad weeks with a tight over Western (who fall three to #14), and Cashmere Technical were too good for Coastal Sprit and climb one place to #2. As stated last week, Roslyn Wakari remain that top the Rankings this week because of their massive points total – they are the only team to break the 1180 points barrier so far this season, but look forward to their massive clash with Caversham AFC as the pick of next weekend’s Chatham Cup games. Elsewhere the outcome of Wellington Olympic’s game against Lower Hutt could also markedly impact the Rankings.
