PROUDLY PRESENTS
“THE AVE”
WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE It’s our first home game of 2016 – so welcome back to another season of “The Ave”. There are a whole bunch of welcomes to get through so let’s get started: First off we would like to welcome today’s main opposition Mangere United, we played two memorable games against the men from Centre Park last year and we are looking forward to another epic encounter today – Sohail who joined us from Mangere will be looking for a big game against his old club! Joining the club in the fight this season is Elite Lawn and Garden Services as the NRFL Squad shirt sponsor – we welcome John and his team to the club and thank him for his kind support! This year we also have a number of individual player sponsors across the NRFL squad – you can view these in the NRFL sponsor directory in this program or on our website. We hope club members will support these businesses (as well as Elite Lawn and Garden Services) this season and show them what Ellerslie AFC is about. Also joining us is Physio Logic as a club partner as the suppliers of Physio services for the NRFL Squads – Similarly Premier Physiotherapy have signed up as the suppliers of Physio services for the Women’s side of the club, including our Women’s First Team and Reserves – thanks to Connor and Matt respectively for your efforts.
We welcome back Alannah as well who will be helping to look after the bar this season, she is joined by Coralie who also is helping us out with some volunteer administration – so make sure you give her a warm Ellerslie AFC welcome when you see her. In the NRFL squad and Women’s Conference squads there are a number of new faces to the club this season, so I hope all the club members will make them feel welcome as they join forces with our existing players to push for our promotion goal in both mens’ and women’s. Finally a big thank you to all those team managers, coaches, administrators etc etc who have helped us get on the field this season – without your efforts where would we be! All the best to all teams this weekend and we hope to see you in the bar after the games!
Cheers

LOTTO NRFL DIV 1 PREVIEW It’s time for the Preview to return, and it’s a tough job as you don’t make friends trying to predict games - but it’s good to keep track of what will be an exciting league this year. METRO FC vs MANUREWA AFC (Friday Night) PHYLLIS STREET @ 7:30 It’s the first Friday night game at Phyllis street this season and it see’s high flying Metro take on early strugglers Manurewa, on paper this could be a big scoreline - but I think Rewa offer a bit going forward and could get into this game if they can plug their backline. TIP: Metro 3-1 NORTH SHORE vs PAPAKURA ALLEN HILL @ 3:00 Kura travel north after banking their first win last week against Ellerslie and they will need to be at their organised and passionate best against a Shore team that has shown they can deliver goals - could be an interesting clash. TIP: Stalemate draw WAITAKERE CITY vs MT ALBERT PONSONBY FRED TAYLOR @ 3:00 Fresh from the Premier League Waitak have not found things plain sailing in good old Div 1 with a 1-1-1 record and they come up against a much changed side in MAP. This new MAP side have been defensively sound in 2 of their first 3 games but goals have been hard to come by TIP: Waitak 1-0
FRANKLIN UTD vs ORATIA UTD MASSEY PARK @ 3:00 The merger between Pukekohe and Waiuku always made sense to me and while the results on the field have been probably slightly less than expected I think in the long term they are on the right course - Oratia have only the opening weekend win over Ellerslie in their points tally but will hope to add some more here. TIP: Tia to sneak it 2-1 ELLERSLIE AFC vs MANGERE UTD MICHAELS AVE @ 5:00 In the late game Ellerslie host Mangere Utd - the corresponding fixture last year provided an absolute thriller with the home side coming from behind to win 4-3. The opening rounds have not gone to plan for either team so this is a chance to turn that around TIP: Home advantage to be enough

MANGERE UNITED
MATCH REPORT - ROUND 3 Round 3 of the NRFL saw us head south again – this time slightly further down state highway one to McLennan Park in Papakura. Those who have not had the pleasure of visiting McLennan Park should know this venue is easily one of Auckland’s best places to watch football, with plenty of space for spectators and lots of room for expansion – it deserves to be the home of the next ASB Premiership side. So putting the love in about the Kura facilities to one side, because we had two very important games to focus on – and first up was Ben Fletchers reserve side as they looked to continue their perfect record. A withdrawal just before the game left the Reserves with one sub short but Sam Twigg who had managed to finish up with his school game filled the void on the bench nicely – there was however quite a number of changes to the reserves lineup from the last game:
Jordan Milligan came in for his debut to replace Lloyd who was on First Team duty
Mike Glenny came into the team for the first time this season and Dylan Horgan moved from fullback to centre back as both Griffin and Seb moved to First Team duty. Ben Coates and Matt Sargent both started their first games of the season, and so did Tom Durkin after his sole appearance in 2015. New signing Ricky Barbosa took up a wing position in his first game for the club – on the bench we had Harpreet and Baljiit who both were making their Reserves debuts, while Sam Twigg, Sam Christensen and Campbell Ng filled out the bench.
It was two “veterans” however who came up with the piece of magic for what turned out to be the only goal of the game with Monju providing a great cross for Alex Witteveen to head home for his 3rd goal of the season. It was the second half when Jordan really earned his keep – he made a number of quality saves in the second half, especially in the last 10 minutes that preserved our lead – none were more important than the reflex save he made right on 90mins with the Kura player steering an effort goalwards – it was even more impressive that he managed to hold onto the ball and that resulted in us holding onto all 3 points! Man of the Match points went to Tom Durkin who was superb in his first appearance of the season – great effort Tom and to all the team for another gritty effective performance.
Reserves Man of the Match – Tom Durkin Final Score: Papakura Reserves 0, Ellerslie 1 ______________________________________________________ In the first team game we were looking to start better than we had against Manurewa the week before, but we also were fielding a much changed team amid injuries and unavailability’s – Jason, Freddie, Dan and Isaac all not available. That meant first starts of the season for Jordan Oosterhof and Seb Poelman as well as Lloyd Huysmans – while Martin Pike returned from his 1 match suspension. Adam Scott moved upfront from the wing and Christian moved back to fullback to allow Adam Barkley to move out of the midfield three to the wing. Martin Pike took up his holding midfield role and the captains

armband as our normal skipper Freddie missed the game due to a knee injury picked up at training on Thursday – which was a shame as Freddie was looking forward to playing against his old club!
Before the game we were confident the team we had fielded would be strong enough to do the job, after all this is a squad game and we are blessed with depth so this was a great time to see what some different members of our squad could do. Unfortunately we were punished in the first half when we were not able to properly clean up on the edge of our box and after a little bit of pinball Papakura opened the scoring. We went into halftime just the 1 goal down and we spoke about a number things we needed to do to get back into the game – and to be fair everyone was positive and attitudes were correct as we tried to fight back into the game – however sometimes you just don’t get the rub of the green and literally minutes into the 2nd half we conceded a controversial penalty kick. Talking the amongst the players the general feeling is that the Kura player tried to get onto the end of a deepish free kick with a diving header – he missed the ball because I don’t think he realised Jordy had tracked the ball well and he ended up in a big tangle with Jordy but it was contact he had accidently initiated – there was also some doubt as to if the Kura player was ever going to be able to reach the bal l. Regardless it was given and it was well converted and for us sadly on a day when we didn’t look that threatening in possession we were 2-0 down and looking at long odds for any points. We didn’t stop working though and the boys battled but just didn’t have any answers to what was a well organised and fired up Kura side. Their third goal came from another cross and a sharp piece of movement from Charlie Heather on the back post who was left with a reasonably simple finish and his hatrick. So plenty for us to work on during the week – we can’t even begin to look at things like the players that were missing or the penalty call until we fix the mistakes we did make in a game we should have played better in – Kura will be a tough challenge for teams this year if they can stay this compact and organised, I look forward to playing them again in the second round.
Man of the Match points went the way of: Adam Scott – proudly sponsored by Ray White Kingsland Final Score: Papakura 3, Ellerslie 0 So our attention now turns to our first home game against Mangere United this weekend – we had a pretty amazing come from behind win against Mangere last year at Michaels Ave and we will be looking for something similar this weekend – maybe not having to come from behind though!
