Welcome everyone to Michaels Ave for another action packed weekend of Football – it’s been a long time between drinks for our Official Match Day Program so we have a bit of info to cover off. Firstly though we wish to extend a warm welcome to Melville United and their passionate Chairman Bruce Holloway – we have gotten to know Melville a bit more this season having played them twice already and while we are desperate for points today it would be nice to see the “Pride of the Waikato” win a promotion spot at the end of the season, their facilities alone are deserving of that status. A key feature of this NRFL clash is the curtain raiser as 1st plays 2nd in the Reserves league – a win for Ellerslie puts them one step closer to a second league title in a row but a win for Melville draws them level with the home side and with everything to play for in the remaining 4 rounds of the season – so make sure if you are coming down make sure you come early to watch this classic encounter.

On the women’s side of the club our First Team and Reserves are in red hot form with the Swamp Dragons (Reserves) topping their table and the Desert Sharks (First Team) sitting 2nd in their league (Disclaimer: I had no involvement in the naming of these teams). A 2nd place, or higher, finish would be our best league result since we were last in the Women’s Premier league in 2003 (also a 2nd place finish) – so there is some great work being done there by Nicola, Jason and Lane and their teams. If we take a quick look at the rest of the senior club tables (check it out on page XX) we see some notable performances from Diamonds who jumped two leagues from last year and are on track for another promotion, Elks who migrated from open football to over 35’s this season also sit in 2nd place and are having a good season. Boylan after a slow start to the season have jumped back into 3rd place thanks to some recent good form as have Business Time in their division. We can’t forget our Champs team (they will never forgive me) who lead their league with an unbeaten record to date, they look like front runners along with the Swampies to pick up the Brewster Shield (Best Performed Team) at the end of the year prizegiving. In other club news we have a few staff movements to announce, firstly I want to thank Alastair Robertson who has been interning for us over the past couple of months (and banging in a few goals for shotaholics) – Alastair has been doing our social media updates including the flash results posts and has been organising the entry of our results into AFF’s website, among other things. He is spending the last period of his time in NZ touring around the country, we wish him all the best with his travels. We may have mentioned in a previous issue that Fred de Jong has joined the club, Fred’s role will be focusing on our coaching and development at the club and with a massive amount of experience behind him we should see big improvements in this area – best of luck to Fred and his team! Unfortunately the weather has slowed down the progress of the installation of the floodlights – however they are getting closer to finishing and we will update all members when this work has been completed. LAST WORD: September is a massive month for the senior club with a number of events on, including the Senior Open Grade Tournament, Kiwi’s vs The Rest, The Women’s Over’s and Under’s and Senior Prizegiving – check out our key events calendar on page XX for more info. Cheers Tim Adams Senior Club Chairman - ELLERSLIE AFC

NORTHERN KNOCKOUT CUP The Northern Knockout Cup is for all open men’s teams from Conference level down to AFF Div 9 - the competition is only open to teams in the Auckland Football area as teams from NFF and the Counties area have their own competitions. The winner of the Northern Knockout Cup plays the winner of the Counties Manukau cup for the Tom McNabb Trophy - a very prestigious match. 2017 Ellerslie entered 7 teams into the 2017 version and 2 teams won their way into the 2nd round. Those two teams are our AFF Champs side (defending champs) and our Div 3 Shotaholics side. Both teams won their 2nd round games as well to be in the draw for the third round alongside 10 other teams. Leading Goalscorers: 2 - Logan Simpson , Sam Pease (both Champs), Jesper Lagerbaeck, Blake Fairweather, Jamie Smith, Blake Beckford (all Shotaholics) Previous Results: 2016 - Winners (AFF Champs) 2015 - Elimination Semi’s (Shicksy)

AFF WOMEN’S KNOCKOUT CUP The Women’s Knockout Cup is open to all Senior Women’s teams across the wider AFF area (including Counties). Only NRFL and NRFL Reserves teams are prohibited from entering this cup competition. 2017 Ellerslie entered 4 women’s teams into the First Round with two teams winning their way into the 2nd round, those teams being our Conference and Conference Reserves teams. In the 2nd round both those teams played at home and won their games to go into the 3rd round with 10 other teams. Leading Goalscorers: 5 - Laura Askew (Conference Reserves) 3 - Ella Weibe, Florence Noble (both Conference) 2 - Gemma Lewis, Claire Kenyon, Tayla Hawes (all Conference Reserves), Lyric Davison (Conference)

6

Previous Results: 2016 - Runners Up (Conference) 2015 - Semi-Finals (Conference Reserves)

MASTERS KNOCKOUT CUP The Masters Knockout Cup is open to all age graded men’s teams in three divisions, Over 30’s, Over 35’s and Over 40’s. The competition includes teams from the wider AFF region including Counties Manukau teams. 2017 Ellerslie only entered one team into this years comp as both our Over 40’s teams were involved with the World Masters games, so our new Over 35’s team the Elks are carring the lone Masters torch for the club, and carrying it well as they have won in both the 1st round and in the 2nd round in tight games. Leading Goalscorers: 1 - Giovanni Botti, Murray Bruges, Sam Beresford, Cristiano Bellavitis (all Elks) Previous Results: No previous highlights

NRFL RESERVES KNOCKOUT CUP The NRFL Reserves Knockout competition is only open to NRFL Reserves sides and features a number of tiers, which are Cup, Plate, Shield and Bowl. Teams from AFF, NFF and WAIBOP are all able to enter from NRFL clubs.

2017 Ellerslie only had one eligible team to enter in this years competition and drew today’s league opposition Melville at Gower Park in the First Round, after winning that in the nick of time before a penalty shootout they dispatched Onehunga Sports in the next round to make the Semi-finals where they have drawn Birkenhead United at home. Leading Goalscorers: 2 - Rowan Corbett, Stefan Milosevic (both NRFL Div 1 Reserves) 1 - Monju Shohei (NRFL Div 1 Reserves) Previous Results: 2015 - Plate Winners (NRFL Div 1 Reserves) 2014 - Bowl Winners (NRFL Div 2 Reserves)* 2013 - Cup Winners (NRFL Div 1 Reserves) 2012 - Plate Winners (NRFL Div 1 Reserves) *In 2014 Ellerslie fielded teams in both the NRFL Div 2 and Div 1 Reserves leagues

Ellerslie AFC vs Melville Utd

Michaels Ave @ 3pm

Todays featured game kicks off this catch up round, in a game that is crucial for both teams for entirely different reasons. Melville have been in good form all season, particularly ruthless against the bottom half teams but had struggled against the other teams in promotion contention, however with a good win against Western Springs in their back pocket they are back in the hunt for Premier League football for 2018. Ellerslie on the other hand need at least 6 points from their last 5 games to put relegation fears behind them, a point or three in this game would be magical! PREDICTION: Can’t see Melville losing this but hoping Ellerslie can keep it tight and build some positive form

Western Springs vs Franklin Utd

Seddon Fields @ 5:15pm

Another interesting battle of teams from opposite ends of the table, Springs were the favourites for the league early season and have made some more impressive signings since then so really on paper they should be running away with this league, however they have a few speed wobbles in recent weeks – that should be good news for Franklin as the last thing they need is a repeat of the 12-3 smashing they received at Bledisloe Park in the first round. Infact Franklin may fancy stealing a point here after they held new leaders Manukau to 1-0 last weekend…. PREDICTION: Springs should be too good, but they have been up and down – same with Franklin.

Waitemata FC vs Tauranga City

McLeod Park @ 3pm

Take 2 – this fixture was the victim of some nasty weather last weekend which saw the game postponed. As we know first-hand the ground at McLeod is pretty exposed to the elements so probably a good call. This game has not much riding on it if I’m honest, I can’t see any of the mid table teams climbing into a promotion spot and I also can’t see any of the three teams in the relegation scrap getting enough points collectively to pull someone from the middle into trouble. So this game is all about pride it seems! PREDICTION: I just can’t bring myself to pick Waitemata to win…. So the visitors to grab all the points!

Mt Albert Ponsonby vs North Shore Utd

Anderson Park @ 3pm

Having had a good look at Shore last weekend, they are an interesting inclusion in the race for promotion. A solid if not spectacular 6 compliment the talented front 4, the really interesting thing is the way the coach has improved the entire team to be challenging for Premier League, on paper they don’t look good enough but Tom has them organised and cohesive. MAP have had a tricky year and they don’t have the budget of some of their neighbours, so consolidating in midtable won’t be a complete waste of a season for coach McKay – but he will want to ruffle a few feathers of the big boys at the business end of the season. PREDICTION: Shore will win but it will be only by a goal or maybe 2 – not a blowout.

10

Metro FC, Oratia Utd, Hibiscus Coast AFC and Manukau City all have no games in this catchup window.

North Shore United vs Ellerslie AFC, Allen Hill Stadium @ 3pm (22/07/2017) After several weeks out of action thanks to a combination of the AFF introduced "Catch Up" weekends and our early exit in the cup we were back on the road against North Shore at Allen Hill Stadium on what was a very wet day! After a fiercely contested "Reserves" vs "First Team" game the week prior to this game, combined with a spate of illness through the squad meant we lined up a very different side to the one who braved extreme weather conditions against Waitemata in our last league game. The flu hit Sangster, Alex C, Andy W, and Alex W with the former two players to sick to even take bench spots - That meant Callum Waters and Jordan Oosterhof made their returns to the First Team in their places. Joe Junge and Josh Anthony also started in changes from our last game. At the back Dylan Horgan made his return to First Team football just days before his 18th birthday as Fredrik Ljungberg arrived back in the country on Thursday after attending a wedding in Sweden. Luca Ortali made his return from his suspect suspension to take the left back slot. Unfortunately the general theme of our season is that teams are particularly good at punishing our mistakes and it was 4 errors that lead to 4 well taken Shore goals in the first half - I would describe each goal but we have yet to get a copy of the video, so will let the moving pictures do the speaking for me once we get it. We are getting used to tough halftime talks this season and this was just another one, we had things to solve and confidence to rebuild and skipper for the day Jason Mann did a good job rallying the troops as we came out a lot more competitive in the second half. It's probably true that Shore dropped off a couple of percentage points but I think we can also take some confidence from the second half clean sheet as we look to Melville this coming weekend.

North Shore Utd vs Ellerslie AFC Reserves at Allen Hill Stadium, 12:30pm - 22/07/17

This game was key for Ben Fletcher's reserves as they turned up to Allen Hill Stadium to face up against the only team to beat them in the first round, and on their home patch it was going to be a hard slog. There were also plenty of changes for the Reserves (just like the First Team) since their last game which was a cup quarter-final win over our neighbours Onehunga Sports. Jack Rathbone won back a starting spot at rightback and Adam Scott claimed the left back spot, while Mike Glenny moved into centre back to cover for the missing Stefan Milosevic (who injured himself at training), partnering Mike at centre back for the first time this season was Dan McLean who was making his first steps in his comeback. In midfield Monju and Victor combined with the high scoring John Murphy who had moved into a more preferred midfield role - up top Art Twigg combined with Ricky and Lachlan, who was making his first start of the season. It didn't take long however for the Reserves to hit a patch of form as Art Twigg smashed in a quality shot from outside the box, some clever technique as he hit the ball first time with a bit of an inside out action to slot the ball into the top right corner of the goal. The keeper had no chance. We pushed on keen to push home our advantage, and we were rewarded when young Jack Rathbone grabbed a poachers finish as he followed through after being involved in some sharp buildup play on our right hand side with Lachlan. The ball ended up with Monju, whose sharp shot was not held well by the Shore keeper and Jack was there to apply the finish. 2-0 was the halftime score, and while it was not a locked in victory for the away side yet the lads were confident they could kick on in the second half and that's just what they did as Monju in the thick of the action again won a slightly contestable penalty when he was taken down by the Shore GK when he was already out of play (the ball was in play still), but John Murphy made no mistake as he popped home his 9th goal of the season and extended his league scoring streak to 4 games.

30

It was early in the half to score the 3rd goal and from that point (50th minute) Shore looked to restore some pride and stay in the race for the league title, and they got some reward for their efforts in the 68th minute as James Atkinson grabbed a goal off the back of some concerted pressure from the home side.

Truth be told Lloyd had been pretty heavily involved in this game, with a couple of crucial saves in the first half and as an extra playing out option from the back, however he was keen not to concede another so he rallied the troops together with skipper Mike Glenny to make sure defensively we didn't cough up another goal. Josh Torrens, Tavis Gravatt, Sam Christensen and Karar Sohrabi all made appearances off the bench to keep our energy levels up and help us close out the game. A very important win as we head into a crucial 6 point game against Melville Utd next weekend before further tough games against Western Springs and Mt Albert Ponsonby, with a cup Semi-Final against Birkenhead crammed in there somewhere.
