Welcome to another issue of “The Ave” - this issue is an online version only as our printer (whom we owe a lot) is on a well deserved holiday in Europe. This weekend we welcome champions elect Melville Utd for the 4th time in the last two seasons - They will be keen to get the point they require to win the league and while there is no doubt they deserve the title we are hoping they do it next weekend. On Sunday our Women’s First Team who have a slim chance of winning the AFF/NFF Conference play Central with 3 points the goal and hoping Fencibles do the business against both Onehunga Sports and Norwest! Check that game out at 1pm at “The Cage”. Good luck in your games! Cheers Tim Adams

Ok so this derby might look slightly contrived to the neutral supporter – Ellerslie and Howick/Pakuranga are not neighbouring suburbs, nor do the two teams have a lot of recent history – so you could forgive the current players or fans for not realising this is a game that means a bit to a fair few people. So here is why I think it’s a big game: - O40’s… our current over 40’s team have been battling away against the same bunch of fencies players for years, through Northern League, Over 30’s and now Over 40’s. As luck may have it Ellerslie Metro played Fencibles Dogbolters the same day as this game and Ellerslie came away with a convincing win! - Player movement – this year has seen a bit of movement the other way (ie to Fencibles) but there has been quite a lot of Ex-Fencies players turn up at Ellerslie in the last 5 years, Martin Pike and Matt Scarborough to name a few. In the fencies First Team we played on the weekend there were as far as I could tell three players who in the last 3 seasons had been at Ellerslie (could have been 4 if Div had stayed there!) - Suburbs, OK thats random why are Suburbs even part of this conversation? As part of the Suburbs National League franchise Ellerslie and Fencibles have worked closely together as partners of the Suburbs franchise and as such a friendly relationship has developed, but like any friendship it’s still competitive! - Flashpoints – for some reason there tends to be a higher than normal chance of a flashpoint during a Panmure Bridge derby – from the Ricky Espinosa spiderman mask inspired scuffle to the throat grabbing drama between Isaac Dickerson and a Fencibles import – there has always been feeling in these games. This season we tried to add another level to the derby by getting both sides to agree to evening fixtures, which allowed more club members to attend and I think it was a success with decent crowds at both Michaels Ave in the first round (Mental Health Awareness Match) and in this game at William Green Domain. It’s something I hope we can replicate with Fencibles for the 2019 season (assuming we stay in the league, which looks more and more likely!!).
As I mentioned earlier as luck would have it there were actually 4 games between Ellerslie and Fencibles on Saturday, the first two were at Michaels Ave at 2:45pm with the Over 40’s clash on the turf as well as our AFF Championship teams locking horns on the #2 field – with Ellerslie taking that match as well! Reserves was our third game of the day, at William Green at a kickoff time of 4:30pm.
14
This was a big game for Reserves as Fencibles have set the gold standard all season and when we beat them in the first round 2-1 at Michaels Ave I think we felt we had enough to catch them – they are a good team no doubt, but a different team to that of Waiheke or North Shore – Fencibles didn’t seem to have any superstars but instead relied on team strength and very sharp patterns of play and pace (of which they had plenty). Luckily for the Ellerslie team we had a very strong team out for this game so it looked like it would be a cracker!
The game did start well for both teams with Fencibles edging possession but not really causing us too many issues, a lot of attacks were sent down their left wing which was keeping Will Sargent at left back busy – alternatively our left hand side where Denny Twigg was playing was looking very dangerous, with lots of nice interplay between Denny, Monju and Ta causing problems – just not the end result to match! At this point the narrative might have been Ellerslie looking dangerous but Fencibles were looking more and more likely to score – well I don’t think that was true, I think if anything the opposite was true and Ellerslie were building and Fencibles took advantage in the 17th min when Sam Robertson opened the scoring – that jolted the game into action and over the next 9 minutes the outcome of the game was decided in my opinion. The first action point was an unfortunate incident involving twice Ellerslie AFC Supporters NRFL player of the year Freddie Ljungberg who copped a bad injury in an aerial duel with Tariro – I don’t think there was anything intentional in the challenge by Ta and it didn’t look like foul but I think both teams wished that we could wind this one back, as Freddie of all people didn’t deserve to end up like this in a game that would have been quite special for him! Thankfully he came back later on in the evening from the A&E and caught up with the lad, which was nice. That incident shook us probably a little more than it did Fencibles who seemed galvanised by it and quickly went on and scored again to make the game 2-0 (Sam Robertson again). The final flashpoint in this sequence was a disallowed goal for Ellerslie when Leon climbed well at the back post to nod in a free kick – however the linesman flag popped straight up despite Leon not being offside. The referee went over to check with the linesman who declared there was an offside player in the play, he wasn’t sure who it was but he thought it was the Asian looking guy. So the Referee disallowed the goal and it turns out Monju was at the front post in an offside position not effecting play and had been confused for Leon. Not ideal but I want to make it clear that this call alone was not responsible for the outcome of this game, we have to own our performance but it didn’t make it any easier! Just prior to halftime Fencibles hit probably the goal that killed the contest, Sam Funnell the scorer and a tense halftime break for the Ellerslie side to figure out how to get back into the game – A couple of changes were made with Denish Chand, Denny Twigg and Ben Shaw all coming off – the former two for first team duty and the latter with a knock. Luke MacKay came on with Sho Kinoshita and Victor Ganescu – all very able replacements. The second half was actually probably slight worse in terms of our performance as we struggled to impact the game much, no one person played poorly but collectively we couldn’t force a mistake from the home side that we could capitalise on – which was basically the story of the game. Further changes when Gabriel entered the game for a sore Connor McConchie who was making his first appearance back from injury in the 57th minute and in the 74th when Blake Martin made his debut appearance for the Reserves and he looked well at home for his 16min cameo – well done! It’s testament to the youth coaches at the club who had worked with these young players who without fail have stepped up and done well when called on.
15
Fencibles always looked like adding a 4th and to be fair we did well to go from the 46th minute to the 85th minute with no goals against but in the 85th Matthew Danielson added Fencibles 4th and final goal – and it was almost like both teams at that point changed and Fencibles took their foot off the gas and we grabbed a consolation goal which was very well taken by Leon who after having his header disallowed had finally put his name on the scoreboard in the last minute of regulation time. In the end a disappointing result but hard to begrudge Fencibles the points as they were the better team and I suspect will win the title now and that’s nothing less than they deserve. During the first team game I got this message (below) on twitter – I couldn’t help myself from taking some moderate enjoyment from our loss – I’m not sure he knew I was joking…
Moving on to the first team game, at the special time of 7pm, which brought in a decent crowd I thought as I mentioned earlier and I think the late kickoff added something to the spectacle of the match as well. It’s also no secret that turfs play better with a bit of moisture and there was plenty of that around so conditions were all set for a classic Panmure Bridge Derby! Ellerslie lined up with no changes in the starting XI from the previous week against Waiheke, with Dan back from Europe included on the bench as our only change in the squad – Adam again started up front in the highest man role and it was his hard press that resulted in our first goal – another keeper error this time from a throw in coughed the ball up to Adam about 2 meters out from goal, and he kept his nerve to push the ball home to open the scoring 18 mins into the contest.
16
The game cruised along from that point until the 30th minute when a flashpoint occurred when Conor was fouled taking a high ball after a bit of an aerial scramble in the box – I wasn’t that close to that end of the field but after reviewing the footage it looks like Conor after being fouled pulls the Fencibles player who had landed infront of him to one side to get the ball – the Fencies team immediately react and one of the Fencies players comes in and gives Conor a big old two handed shove and from that point the six yard box became the most densely populated area of the entire field in the space of 5-10 seconds. To be fair to both sides there was nothing thrown by anyone, it was more a bit of pushing and some angry voices and the referee and his assistant didn’t seem to overreact to what was a bit of an ado about nothing – Ellerslie were awarded a free kick and two of the protagonists were awarded yellow cards (one from each side which is standard for this kind of incident).
The incident seemed to rile the players up a little though and between that point and halftime there were an additional two yellow cards awarded to Ellerslie players for challenges that both teams were trading – I think the referee in the scheme of the whole game (8 yellows) was probably a little card happy as there really wasn’t too much going on between the players. Maybe the derby atmosphere got to him? Anyway Ellerslie successfully negotiated their way to halftime without scoring (which is a rare occurrence) and the changing room was pretty positive and focused – Fencibles made a change at halftime with Scott Jacques coming off and Jarrod Young coming on and to be fair Fencibles started the second half very strong (as we knew they would) and went within a whisker of scoring when Fencibles attacked down our left, cut the ball back and the striker had basically the entire goal to shoot into which he did and Conor made a miraculous save to keep us in the game. I don’t know the exact time but following Conor’s save of the season we suckerpunched Fencibles to effectively seal the game when Dylan laid a nice first time ball back to Aalok who punched a long pass forward to Rowan who took a touch behind the Fencibles backline and finished well across the onrushing GK – much to the delight of the Ellerslie supporters who were there in numbers/ Both teams changed some players around, Conrad came on for Ellerslie and Scott Booker and then Jordan Kalk entered the field for Fencibles. Denish Chand made his comeback from injury late in the game as a sub for Dylan Horgan.
Fencibles kept throwing players forward in an attempt to get something they could use to steal the match but we held strong for our second successive clean sheet (our 4th in total), the result makes us safe from the relegation dogfight which is nice and takes some pressure off us for the remaining 3 games of the season starting with Champions elect Melville this weekend!

PONIES ABROAD (by Callum McKenzie) “Football’s coming home, it’s coming home, it’s coming home, it’s coming”. Well it didn’t but that certainly didn’t take anything away from what was one of the most unpredictable, exciting and captivating FIFA World Cups that has been seen in recent years. Russia 2018 had it all; a German team that was knocked out in the group stage, competitive hosts and the controversial introduction of VAR. We are all aware of the routine of any Kiwi football fan every four years when the World Cup is staged but what do English fans get up to on the other side of the world? The FIFA World Cup is more than just four weeks of knocking a ball round for the English. It is four weeks of blood, sweat and tears. A World Cup first, work second mentally is almost the norm for any passionate English football fan. However some fans took it to another level this time round; postponing large birthday parties that had taken months of planning, choosing not to go to music gigs and even postponing weddings all because England were winning (for a change)! The amount of support that the English football team receive is unfathomable and you can also see how the pressure of a World Cup gets to players. It’s almost unfair on the players to have that much pressure placed on their shoulders. Although, this England team handled the rather overwhelming pressure and expectations of a nation extremely well. What really struck me was the number of England fans that decided that they would go over and watch 1,2 or even all 3 of their knockout games just because they could! Imagine being able to fly 8 hours watch and enthralling game of football were your team come out victors and fly home all within 24 hours at a minimal cost! Gareth Southgate has been the catalyst that has sparked a change in the way that the three Lions approach the World Cup. At this World Cup we saw an England team with true belief in themselves, this belief was reflected by fans too. It would be hard to walk down any main street in London and not hear the timeless classic “Three Lions”. To give you an indication of how much this song is played in England when the World Cup is on, “Three” reached number 1 in the charts however the night England were knocked out of the cup the song dropped 92 places, 92! In this World Cup we saw an England team who were able to play an attacking and attractive style of football that fans appreciated. However there’s an elephant in the room that needs to be addressed. Were England genuinely one of the top 4 teams at the 2018 World Cup or were they just lucky with their draw? I’ll leave that for you to decide. Thank you Russia 2018 for such an enthralling 4 weeks of chaos in England. I’ve been lucky enough to have been treated to some of the best atmospheres around the world. As much as I am one who generally cheers England’s opposition on I couldn’t help but get behind the Three Lions. You’ve taught me a lot about passion, faith and belief over the past 4 weeks, all of which NZ football could use a little more of.

Sunday saw us away to Whangarei for our road trip game against a Northland team who we struggled against in the first round - so we expected a tough game! The weather in the North was stunning and the field was surprisingly good, not how I remember Tikipunga at all. I’m sure it was all rain and mud last time! We parked up the vans behind the goal to watch the contest unfold, but befor e the game could kick off one of the Northland supporters had accidently driven their car through the wooden barrier and almost into the group of Northland players warming up on the field - the older lady in the car was a little shaken up but there was no permanent damage. That distraction didn’t effect us and we started the game very strong and Ella in her 2nd game back opened the scoring with a low powerful shot across the GK. Leigh doubled the lead not too long after that after some nice interplay with Tove and a nice finish. Ella completed the scoring after a nice deep run from Anita resulted in a penalty which was dispatched into the goal with no sign of an error. In the second half Northland changed a few tactical things and were much harder to breakdown and they pressed and harried us very hard for the remainder of the game. The win put us top of the table but the rumour is a couple of defaults by Manukau and Northland have probably put Norwest and Onehunga Sports in the box seat but stranger things have happened.
