NEXT HOME GAME CENTRAL UTD 23/06 @ 3pm

WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE It’s been a couple of weeks since we have played at home, with two games on the road at opposite ends of Auckland for the First Team and a home/away game for the Reserves against the Rebels and a trip out west last week. Welcome today to Central Utd and their team, a tight game was had last time we played in the first round at the cage with Erin saving a penalty and some sharp finishing from Kez and Hollie helping us earn all three points. A special mention to the Reserves as they have a massive game against Bucklands Beach which will see the victor go top (checks math) and give potentially a little breathing space. In the cup there is 5 Ellerslie teams into the 2nd round with First Team drawing Three Kings Div 1 and Reserves drew Eastern Suburbs Conference. Rebels got a comfortable draw as they got a Div 4 Onehunga Mangere side and Zamantix Rovers got handed a tough task as they have todays main opposition Central United Conference - send the scouts out! Good luck to all teams playing this Sunday!

FROM THE DUGOUT Welcome to Ellerslie’s Women’s Conference match as they play Central today. Ellerslie had a mixed bag vs Central last season, losing an drawing once during the season’s fixtures and then played a third time in the AFF Women’s Knockout Cup in which Ellerslie was pushed to the wire and eventually won on penalties, making it one of each of the results in 2018. In their first meeting this year, Ellerslie won 2-0 in what was a close game. We’d expect today’s match to be an exciting and close match as Ellerslie sitting in 2nd and Central in 4th. So it will be an important match for both sides. From a coaching side we have been working on our movement of our attacking players to create intelligent combinations in the final zones of the field and hopefully increase our goal scoring opportunities. Central have a strong defence and one of the best goalkeepers in the league, so they will not be easy to break down today. Hope you enjoy the match! Have fun, Ryan Shiffman

FROM THE DUGOUT

ELLERSLIE VS BEACHLANDS MARAETAI Sunday saw Ellerslie travel 29km’s through Pakuranga and Howick down to the Pohutukawa Coast and Te Puru Park to play hosts Beachlands Maraetai in AFF/NFF Conference action. Maraetai translates into English as Meeting Place by the Sea and it’s appropriate that Te Puru Park seems to fit that description with what on the surface seems to be an awesome set of community facilities, mixed codes and all sorts of community activities together in one place. Here is how the venue is described on Wikipedia: “Te Puru Sports Centre, located in Te Puru Park between Beachlands and Maraetai, is the base for the Te Puru Keas (junior cubs), Cubs, Scouts and Venturers. A gym, tennis, sports fields and a large indoor arena provide a cultural centre that unites Beachlands and neighbouring Maraetai into 'the Pohutukawa Coast' community. The Te Puru Centre was initiated by local effort and fundraising and completed with a 50% grant from former Manukau City Mayor Sir Barry Curtis” Sounds like a great asset to the community – however it’s not all roses.

I don’t know the exact detail but the anecdotal evidence I have heard is the group in charge of the Te Puru Centre don’t think Sport (in this case Beachlands Maraetai) has a place of right in their community and therefore in their centre – they however are happy to allow them access as long as they pay for that right. On Sunday when we were at Te Puru Park there was not one visible person from the community using the Centre, in any way shape or form* – so it seems a facility purpose built for the community and according to Wikipedia initiated and fund-raised by locals is sitting empty while local sportspeople use outlying buildings like the Tennis Club or a commercial venue like the Franklin. *other than the public toilets and changing rooms

It doesn’t seem right and with Ellerslie about to get resource consent for our own community building – some lessons to be learnt from the above example. Right so onto the game, Ellerslie came into this fixture on the back of a morale boosting win against Norwest Utd with several player availability issues – and while some of these issues were resolved for this fixture we still went into this game on the lighter side and the Reserves also had light numbers. Our goal was to bring to this game some of the intensity and clinical play from the Norwest game, but not to get focused on the score – just on playing well. I think everyone can see Beachlands struggle to compete at this level but even though they were out of their depth, I didn’t hear one word from their team about giving up and they certainly worked their butts off on the field – a true testament to their culture. For Ellerslie it was pleasing to get a few goals and first goals for Holly Marx was also good to see. Player of the day was tough as everyone put in good performances but at the end of the day Maddy, who missed last weekend when she was sick, was everywhere in midfield in this game and just pipped the two hatrick scorers to the coveted first recipient/holder of Ginny our new Player of the Day/Team figurine! Finally just a word of encouragement for Beachlands Maraetai - keep at it and keep on developing, keep those heads up like you have been! So another win which keeps us in touch with Hibiscus who are sitting top of the table and with Central up next we need to concentrate to make sure we keep the pressure on the Stanmore Bay based club.
