Welcome to “The Ave” for the last time in the 2018 season - it’s been another interesting season for the club and we look forward to celebrating our highs and laughing about our mistakes at Prizegiving at the end of September— Tickets are on sale now in the clubrooms. Today we welcome Tauranga to Michaels Ave - it’s been a while since they were here last (the opening game of the 2017 season) and while there is no consequences on todays result with Promotion and Relegation spots all sorted out - there will still be the no small matter of pride on the line. Best of luck to both teams! Good luck in your games! Cheers Tim Adams

PONIES ABROAD (by Callum McKenzie) “Football’s coming home, it’s coming home, it’s coming home, it’s coming”. Well it didn’t but that certainly didn’t take anything away from what was one of the most unpredictable, exciting and captivating FIFA World Cups that has been seen in recent years. Russia 2018 had it all; a German team that was knocked out in the group stage, competitive hosts and the controversial introduction of VAR. We are all aware of the routine of any Kiwi football fan every four years when the World Cup is staged but what do English fans get up to on the other side of the world? The FIFA World Cup is more than just four weeks of knocking a ball round for the English. It is four weeks of blood, sweat and tears. A World Cup first, work second mentally is almost the norm for any passionate English football fan. However some fans took it to another level this time round; postponing large birthday parties that had taken months of planning, choosing not to go to music gigs and even postponing weddings all because England were winning (for a change)! The amount of support that the English football team receive is unfathomable and you can also see how the pressure of a World Cup gets to players. It’s almost unfair on the players to have that much pressure placed on their shoulders. Although, this England team handled the rather overwhelming pressure and expectations of a nation extremely well. What really struck me was the number of England fans that decided that they would go over and watch 1,2 or even all 3 of their knockout games just because they could! Imagine being able to fly 8 hours watch and enthralling game of football were your team come out victors and fly home all within 24 hours at a minimal cost! Gareth Southgate has been the catalyst that has sparked a change in the way that the three Lions approach the World Cup. At this World Cup we saw an England team with true belief in themselves, this belief was reflected by fans too. It would be hard to walk down any main street in London and not hear the timeless classic “Three Lions”. To give you an indication of how much this song is played in England when the World Cup is on, “Three” reached number 1 in the charts however the night England were knocked out of the cup the song dropped 92 places, 92! In this World Cup we saw an England team who were able to play an attacking and attractive style of football that fans appreciated. However there’s an elephant in the room that needs to be addressed. Were England genuinely one of the top 4 teams at the 2018 World Cup or were they just lucky with their draw? I’ll leave that for you to decide. Thank you Russia 2018 for such an enthralling 4 weeks of chaos in England. I’ve been lucky enough to have been treated to some of the best atmospheres around the world. As much as I am one who generally cheers England’s opposition on I couldn’t help but get behind the Three Lions. You’ve taught me a lot about passion, faith and belief over the past 4 weeks, all of which NZ football could use a little more of.

AFF WOMEN’S KNOCKOUT CUP

Round of 16 Round of 16 Quarter Final Quarter Final Semi-Final Final

Otahuhu 0, Ellerslie First Team 13 Waiuku 1, Ellerslie Rebels 1 (Won 3-2 on pens) Ellerslie First Team 3, Eastern Suburbs 0 Western Springs vs Ellerslie Rebels TBC TBC

26th August 26th August 28th August 2nd September 9th September 15th September

So far in the women’s knockout cup the two Ellerslie teams have survived, with the First Team putting away Otahuhu’s Div 2 team and then facing Champs runners up Eastern Suburbs on Tuesday night at Michaels Ave with a comfortable if not dominant 3-0 win. On the flip side the Rebels have qualified for the Quarter-Finals the hard way as they travelled all the way to Waiuku and found the home team in stoic mood as the lower ranked team put on a cup display and made Ellerslie win it via penalties. Their reward is drawing a tough Div 2 Springs team featuring our very own Kelly Bolus!

Game Details: Ellerslie First Team vs Otahuhu Halftime score 11-0. Fulltime 13-0 Goals: Anita Trudgen 2, Leigh Aitken 2, Anna Howden 2, Ella Wiebe, Akhita George, Tove Bennett, Steph Trowill, Pippa Carr, Erin Simperingham Ellerslie First Team vs Eastern Suburbs Halftime score 2-0, Fulltime 3-0 Goals: Leigh Aitken, Ella Wiebe, Anita Trudgen Ellerslie Rebels vs Waiuku Halftime score 1-1, Fulltime 1-1 Goals: Clarissa Nathaniel
