Welcome to another issue of the “The Ave” – this weekend see’s us host Western Springs in a crunch NRFL Fixture for the First Team and Reserves, Neil and his team are chasing promotion straight back into the premier league and needs points this weekend to keep the pressure on Melville and North Shore who are fighting for promotion as well. Ellerslie of course needs points to pull themselves out of relegation issues, so an interesting clash. In the curtain raiser the Ellerslie Reserves need the win to stay ahead of a Melville Reserves side who are finishing the season strong, having lead for most of the season the Reserves will not want to give up the championship now. On Sunday our Women’s First Team and Reserves take on Central at Michaels Ave, with a win in the bag for the First Team seeing us consolidate our position in 2nd place, while the Reserves need to keep winning to avoid a late season slipup – win and the title is almost in their grip. The lights on the lower fields at Michaels Ave seem to be dragging on a little – we are trying to get an update from the council project team, but we expect to have some more news in the next week. Similarly the installation of the sound walls around the #1 pitch has been delayed – I think some neighbours have been doing some extra consultation with the council so that’s probably why it has been delayed – again we hope to know more information on that one within the week. Keep an eye out on our Facebook page in the next week as well as the NRFL Supporters Player of the Year voting will be released soon, this is always a fun time of the season where people can vote and comment on their favourite player. We are also very close to confirming a coaching team and schedule for our Napier U19’s campaign, this will be posted up on the clubs social media channels and on our website as soon as we have sorted out the last little bits and pieces. LAST WORD: As you may have seen we currently advertising the Men’s First Team coach role for 2018, and with that in mind the Club’s Technical Director Fred de Jong has taken over the coaching role for the last 4 games. This means Chris Wallace who has been a dedicated and passionate coach for the club has stepped aside, I wanted to thank Chris for all the time he has put into the club over the years and his legacy of using technology will live on in the shape of the Recording Tower and the AV system in the changing rooms for match reviews – enjoy all the spare time you have over Summer and all the best! Cheers Tim Adams Senior Club Chairman - ELLERSLIE AFC

NORTHERN KNOCKOUT CUP The Northern Knockout Cup is for all open men’s teams from Conference level down to AFF Div 9 - the competition is only open to teams in the Auckland Football area as teams from NFF and the Counties area have their own competitions. The winner of the Northern Knockout Cup plays the winner of the Counties Manukau cup for the Tom McNabb Trophy - a very prestigious match. 2017 Ellerslie entered 7 teams into the 2017 version and 2 teams won their way into the 2nd round. Those two teams are our AFF Champs side (defending champs) and our Div 3 Shotaholics side. Both teams won their 2nd round games as well and have been rewarded by drawing each other in the 3rd round. Leading Goalscorers: 2 - Logan Simpson , Sam Pease (both Champs), Jesper Lagerbaeck, Blake Fairweather, Jamie Smith, Blake Beckford (all Shotaholics) Previous Results: 2016 - Winners (AFF Champs) 2015 - Elimination Semi’s (Shicksy)
AFF WOMEN’S KNOCKOUT CUP The Women’s Knockout Cup is open to all Senior Women’s teams across the wider AFF area (including Counties). Only NRFL and NRFL Reserves teams are prohibited from entering this cup competition. 2017 Ellerslie entered 4 women’s teams into the First Round with two teams winning their way into the 2nd round, those teams being our Conference and Conference Reserves teams. In the 2nd round both those teams played at home and won their games to go into the 3rd round with 10 other teams. Leading Goalscorers: 5 - Laura Askew (Conference Reserves) 3 - Ella Weibe, Florence Noble (both Conference) 2 - Gemma Lewis, Claire Kenyon, Tayla Hawes (all Conference Reserves), Lyric Davison (Conference)
6
Previous Results: 2016 - Runners Up (Conference) 2015 - Semi-Finals (Conference Reserves)
MASTERS KNOCKOUT CUP The Masters Knockout Cup is open to all age graded men’s teams in three divisions, Over 30’s, Over 35’s and Over 40’s. The competition includes teams from the wider AFF region including Counties Manukau teams. 2017 Ellerslie only entered one team into this years comp as both our Over 40’s teams were involved with the World Masters games, so our new Over 35’s team the Elks are carring the lone Masters torch for the club, and carrying it well as they have won in both the 1st round and in the 2nd round in tight games. Leading Goalscorers: 1 - Giovanni Botti, Murray Bruges, Sam Beresford, Cristiano Bellavitis (all Elks) Previous Results: No previous highlights
NRFL RESERVES KNOCKOUT CUP The NRFL Reserves Knockout competition is only open to NRFL Reserves sides and features a number of tiers, which are Cup, Plate, Shield and Bowl. Teams from AFF, NFF and WAIBOP are all able to enter from NRFL clubs. 2017 Ellerslie only had one eligible team to enter in this years competition and drew today’s league opposition Melville at Gower Park in the First Round, after winning that in the nick of time before a penalty shootout they dispatched Onehunga Sports in the next round to make the Semi-finals where they have drawn Birkenhead United at home. Leading Goalscorers: 2 - Rowan Corbett, Stefan Milosevic (both NRFL Div 1 Reserves) 1 - Monju Shohei (NRFL Div 1 Reserves) Previous Results: 2015 - Plate Winners (NRFL Div 1 Reserves) 2014 - Bowl Winners (NRFL Div 2 Reserves)* 2013 - Cup Winners (NRFL Div 1 Reserves) 2012 - Plate Winners (NRFL Div 1 Reserves) *In 2014 Ellerslie fielded teams in both the NRFL Div 2 and Div 1 Reserves leagues

Mt Albert Ponsonby vs Franklin Utd Anderson Park @ 3pm MAP have not been in the best form of late, but they have had some tough games, so when they host Franklin who are also in pretty shabby form they will be keen to take advantage on the points table. Franklin who pushed leaders all the way in a 1-0 loss a couple of weeks ago then were on the backend of their second thrashing at the hands of Western Springs last weekend. PREDICTION: Can’t see Franklin wining this, will be tough to rally following last weekend. Oratia Utd vs North Shore Utd Parrs Park @ 3pm Tia have been hot and cold this season, and probably no hotter than when they beat todays opposition at Allen Hill in the first round – Shore on the other hand seem to have survived a mini mid-season slump to be right back in the promotion mix, they just need Melville and Springs to cough up some points somewhere. PREDICTION: Can’t see Oratia getting a repeat win.
Hibiscus Coast vs Waitemata FC Stanmore Bay @ 3pm Coast promised so much this season when they won the NFF Pre-season competition, but they have been derailed by a less than impressive first half of the season – they seem to have sorted themselves out now and are safe in midtable which is an improvement on last season. PREDICITION: Coast to win at home Manukau City vs Metro FC Walter Massey @ 3pm A classic David vs Goliath battle at Walter Massey Park with leaders City taking on a Metro side who had a mini revival for a period there when they took points off MAP and Western Springs but they are now struggling to pick up points again – You would think City to strong and too smart to lose points here. PREDICTION: City – but won’t be a hiding, it’s not Manukau’s way. Ellerslie AFC vs Western Springs Michaels Ave @ 5pm The home side have dug deep and made a change of coaching staff for the last 4 games of their season to try and give them the best chance of surviving relegation, Western Springs will equally be desperate for points to keep their promotion dream alive – should be a corker. PREDICTION: Heart says draw, head says Springs Tauranga City vs Melville Utd (Sun) Links Ave @ 3pm It’s funny how a bad result can turn around a team’s season – when Tauranga travelled to Gower in the first round and copped a 10-0 loss you thought that was going to be the start of a collapse, however it went the other way and Tauranga steadied the ship and kicked on, particularly at home. Melville need the points and while they were not at their best last week they still have enough threats to damage any team. PREDICTION: Going for an upset with a draw here.

Ellerslie vs Melville: Performance – Check, Bottle – Check, Points – TBA Just like the reserves earlier this was a tight contest, and it was the third one of the season also – however while the Chatham Cup game at Michaels Ave was kind of a tight game the first clash at Gower was a bit of a blowout.
It meant we had plenty of extra motivation for this game as we stepped into the business end of the season needing at least 6 points to keep ourselves clear of relegation issues, and that campaign had not started well with a poor first half against Shore last weekend. However this was a new week and almost a new team as Luca, Josh A and Joe dropped out due to injury and Brennen and Dylan were unavailable due to other commitments. This meant promotions to the starting lineup for Freddie, Alex W, Adam B, Adam S, Andy W and Mike Glenny with Callum Waters dropping to the bench where he was joined by Alex Clark and Sangster who were returning from injury, while Tavis was promoted up to cover the fullbacks for the first time this season. The Melville team had changed a bit from when we last saw them as well, with George Curry back in the UK and no Liam Hayes. Bailey Webster (Jason’s favourite player) was also missing, as was Stafford Dowling. Steven Holloway who hadn’t played against us in the two previous games was back from injury and Jama Boss had transferred over from Wanderers between the last game and this one. Still a pretty experienced team with Aaron Scott and Robbie Greenhalgh marshalling the troops and golden boot leader Marc Evans and the aforementioned Holloway orchestrating all the attacks and being supported well by the speedy Eric Seekie and Jama Boss.
Through the week we had worked on our defensive shape and organisation, I think we have the ability in individual defenders to do the job at this level but we have not been cohesive as units enough this season and that has cost us. That combined with a higher turnover rate that we need has contributed to not locking in many clean sheets this season. It was pleasing then to see in this game that we had some defensive resolve, right from the front of the park where Alex did a good job splitting the centrebacks and making them play down one side to the back two who worked well together to minimise the gaps between them and their teammates – Sam Wilkinson probably hit the nail on the head in the aftermatch speech when he said we were hard to break down, and that’s from a team who have been in free scoring mode most of the season. If we are being 100% honest Melville had chances they probably should have buried and Jason made some great saves, but the point was we frustrated them with our defensive efforts to the point they were snatching at chances a little.
We could have made it even harder for them in the first half as we had three opportunities to take the lead, with the most clear a one on one chance to Adam Barkley who had his effort saved by the impressive Max Tommy.
26
We had a goal before the game to reach halftime with a clean sheet and we almost
achieved it, just a little bit of switching off on a suspected offside that Melville reacted first to and when a fine cross in from our left hand side landed in the vicinity of Marc Evans we knew we were in trouble. The expert goalscorer stretched out and got a toe to the cross, but that was enough to divert the ball into the far corner of the net and past the diving Mann in goal. At halftime we had to replace Adam Barkley who was feeling ill, so Callum Waters came into the game in the high midfield role and Jordan Oosterhof moved out to the wing. It was an interesting halftime break as we hadn’t played overly well in possession but we had defended well and probably deserved to go in level just on the basis of the work we had outputted – so a positive half with some work on’s to be looked at. The second half we did manage to improve our in possession work slightly, but we still took no risks in areas where we could be hurt if we lost the ball and while we might have erred on the side of caution we generally tried to play in the right areas, and I think we might consider ourselves unlucky not to grab an equaliser as the game wore on. Unfortunately on the 69th minute we lost Andy Dalton to a leg injury, Alex Clark came on to replace him in midfield and swapped with Callum to play as our highest midfielder, Alex is a noted striker from distance and had a few chances late in the game but unfortunately we couldn’t get past Tommy.
Alex Witteveen who had worked himself into the ground was replaced with 12 minutes to go with Sangster who took advantage of some tired legs in the Melville backline to create a few chances, but again Tommy with help from his backline pro’s in Scott and Greenhalgh did enough to mop up any chances we looked to exploit. When the final whistle went neither team really celebrated – it was a game that resembled a war zone but neither team were really unhappy either, it was three points that was vital to Melville and it was proof of performance for Ellerslie against a team that getting points off was always going to be tricky. Next up for Ellerslie we have another tough challenge in Springs, but I think if we show the battle and desire we did in this game then Springs will have to earn every goal they get!

Ellerslie narrowly lose 6 point classic The third meeting between these two sides this season saw a narrow victory head the way of the visiting side by 1 goal (in a simular pattern to the first two games). The result had bigger implications for the league table as 2nd placed Melville can now draw level with Ellerslie a win in their catchup game which is scheduled for the 19th of August against Oratia Utd. In that scenario it will come down to goal difference if each of the teams are able to win their remaining fixtures, however Ellerslie definately have the tougher run in with Western Springs and Mt Albert Ponsonby coming up in the next two weeks. In regards to this game Ellerslie came in confident of pulling off another victory against a tough Melville side, but had a few enforced changes with Adam Scott, Mike Glenny and Tavis Gravatt all being called up for first team duty – Joe Junge was out injured and Stefan Milosevic didn’t last long in the game either, coming off with a recurrence of his hip flexor issue. It meant that Luke MacKay was drafted into the team for his second appearence of the season (with his previous appearence being against Melville in the NRFL Knockout Cup) and a first of the season from Raihan Azim who is back from US College.
Rowan was back in the team after a short holiday overseas, and Sam Twigg took a spot on the bench after completing his futsal committments in the past couple of weeks. Normally the Reserves side are fast starters but Melville started much better and we were 2-0 down before we had started to play, there was no panic however as we continued to plug away at Melville, with Lachlan looking particularly threatening when getting the ball facing forward. It was one of those times that lead to our goal as Lachlan got around his fullback and delivered a low hard cross into the box which Rowan met with strong side foot contact and delighted the home crowd as the ball flew into the bottom corner, with the Melville GK unable to keep it out due to it’s power such was the timing of the strike. The second half didn’t produce any further goals as Melville stuck to their defensive task well and Ellerslie pounded away trying to get a league vital equaliser but the Waikato side were determined not to have a repeat of the cup game when Ellerslie came back from 2-1 down to win 3-2.
Next up we have Western Springs in a game that will be crucial in the super tight race for the NRFL Reserves title.
