THE AVE - ISSUE 13

FRONT COVER: Sam Twigg and Josh Lai BACK COVER: Lex challenging the GK NEXT HOME GAME Three Kings United 10.08.19 @ 5pm

Welcome to Michaels Ave for another round of Lotto NRFL action Round 17 sees Waiheke United travel across the harbour to play Ellerslie at Michaels Ave, an Ellerslie team who had a good win against Takapuna in their last game to help erase memories of their tonking last home game against then pointless Fencibles United. Waiheke come into the game in a comfortable mid-table position with a solid if not unspectacular record - however a win in their last game against this seasons surprise package Bucklands Beach means the South American fuelled islanders come into this contest with some form. The only other visit by Waiheke to Michaels Ave was last season when they tasted a surprise loss in a season where they moved away from their mostly South American base and fielded a team who have largely moved onto North Shore United with the former Waiheke Coach.

This means Michaels Ave have not experienced the La Banda and fingers crossed a little flair and excitement comes with the visitors in this match. Please join us up in the clubrooms after the match for some hot food and cold drinks! Cheers Tim Adams ELLERSLIE AFC

FROM THE DUGOUT The last couple of games have been really trying for the coaching staff and for different reasons. A massive thanks goes to Terry who took over the team in Fred’s absence against Fencibles and Takapuna and particularly in the circumstances with the shock loss against Fencies, a tough position for Terry to be put into and he showed great character to help the team take three points against Takapuna in the last 3 minutes of the game. Also thanks must go to Ryan who took yet another hat on at the club as he helped Terry on match day the last two games. Fred is back for this game and while we are glad to have him back, kudos to the team for covering him while he was away.

2019 NRFL DIV ONE

TAKAPUNA VS ELLERSLIE AFC Next time you visit Taharoto Park if you look closely you can the demon's from Ellerslie's 6-0 drubbing from Fencibles buried at the home of Takapuna AFC - A team who had only lost at home once since the start of the 2018 season. That's some record from the Joe Daw coached side and with 3 draws alongside just 3 losses this season it means even if they don't play well they are likely to battle out a draw instead of giving up all three points - and to be fair even though a mistake was the catalyst for Ellerslie's victory - the home team did not give up and they can be proud of the effort they put in, even if it wasn't their day. If you don't really follow Sport or NRFL Footy you would think things like effort, workrate and desire are things that present in all players games, every week as a minimum. But when your dealing with Amateur athletes (and some pro ones) getting your players "up" for the game each week can be a coaches biggest challenge. The reason is the game of football is emotional - even in a fully dominant performance the the best players will still make handfuls of mistakes and get frustrated with a teammate for a missed pass or loosing the ball in a tackle and when moments in the game go against you and your team, keeping players up for the game becomes a even bigger challenge. Getting back to the point - Takapuna had one of those moments in conceding what was the winning goal - the player who made the mistake had otherwise a very good game and was a rock at the back for the home team. A simple mis-control late in the game as he tried to bring down a ball we had headed forward to no-one popped up and straight into the path of Patrick's press and the task of finishing past the Taka keeper 1v1 for his first ever NRFL goal for Ellerslie. I would imagine that Taka player wouldn't make that mistake again in the next 100 games - but such is football with moments - we had at least 2 last week and Fencibles have had a seasons worth in 12 games. Of course effort without quality at the right time means you don't get rewarded for your sweat and tears, but luckily for us after going down a goal in the 15th minute when Takapuna scored from a very tight angle, we had quality in the form of Sam Twigg who cut in from the left

wing and fired off a top corner curler from outside the box to level the score - right on the cusp of halftime as well. There were other chances for both teams to score, but by the large both teams could thank their keepers and some good scramble defence for keeping the score down - particular mention to Ellerslie's young keeper who took home player of the day honours, Kyryl has worked hard on his game in the last 12 months and whilst this was only his 5th First Team game of the season he showed real maturity and a desire to compete physically for every ball in his zone. Takapuna's number 9 - their golden boot and scorer of their goal was a massive danger, with his pace and clever runs off a defenders shoulder when his CB's pinged a long ball meant he was consistently making our backline turn and chase - it was a relief when he was given an early shower after receiving a dissent yellow card in the 80th minute. Looking back at the game Ellerslie will want to create a few more scoring opportunities in coming weeks as we didn't really cut open the Takapuna team very often and if we can create some more chances and keep working as hard as we did through this game then more points should come our way. Couple of other things to mention:

   

Congrats to Dylan Horgan on his 70th First Team game Sam Twigg and Aalok Paudel both made their 25th First Team appearance Patrick Fahey scored his 1st NRFL goal for Ellerslie's First Team Many thanks to Ryan Shiffman for filling in for Fred while he was away

Moving onto next week and we host Waiheke and their supporters - should be an interesting game under lights at 5pm at Michaels Ave.

WAIHEKE UTD FIRST TEAM

TAKAPUNA VS ELLERSLIE AFC It seems we can't get a Reserves win and a First Team win on the same day - the last time this happened was Hibiscus Coast and before that it was a long time between drinks. Luckily this season we have a exceptionally deep Reserves team, a squad that can cope with the loss of top performers Adam Scott, Mike Glenny and Das to the First Team and still have quality players. However the process of playing for Reserves is an earned right - you train well (twice a week as much as you can) and turn up on time and you will get a shot, and it's a shame to see some players handicap themselves on game day by consistently turning up late, particularly if you have put the time in on the training ground and then let yourself down by being late. Obviously there are situations where being late due to being at work etc happens and communication can help mitigate that. That's taking nothing away from the players who started for the Reserves, no-one in the squad of 16 let the team down - it was one of those days where the intensity wasn't there across the park and a few "moments" didn't go our way and I think we were a little guilty of not as players adapting to the oppositions defensive tactics. The title race is still kind of in our hands as we only sit 2 points behind Three Kings as long as we

win our game in hand and beat Three Kings again in the second round game at Michaels Ave - if we do those two things we still require Three Kings to lose one other game which is not beyond the realms of possibility. Winning the Reserves league is of course not the purpose of this team, but having a team learning how to win each week and how to deal with playing as the team favored to win each week is an important thing to learn for young players and the club is pleased with the progress of these young players - but remember keep on working hard on your game and don't forget the goal of a Reserves player is to make that First Team - keep the pressure on! In the end it was congrats to Takapuna on the 1-0 win and their defensive discipline, in the aftermatch the Reserves coach said they had worked hard on denying us space in their half and they did that well and while we felt we had enough chances to get a goal or two we never cut them open like we did in the First Round so a successful tactic from the home team. Thanks to the two U17's lads who stepped up to start, Ben Smith who is a keeper of real promise and Hazem Al Fayad who has an gun in his left foot and will be a scorer of plenty of goals in years to come. Next up a challenge against Waiheke which proved to be a problem for us last time out - time for the young Reserves to get one back at 2:30pm at Michaels Ave next Saturday.
