NEXT HOME GAME Tauranga City 17/08/19
Welcome to Michaels Ave for another round of Lotto NRFL action This weekend we host Three Kings, and they bring with them a few familiar faces in Scott Mackay (a former player and coach) and Tony Beatson who was the 1st Team manager for a couple of seasons under George Ritchie. If the first round game was anything to go by Ellerslie will have to improve from their last outing against Tauranga to get anything from this match and keeping Cam Howieson quiet would be a good starting point. For Ellerslie it’s Sam Twigg’s last game before he heads back to Calvin University - his contribution over the last month has been massive as has Josh Lai’s (who left back to the States last week). It’s great being able to see how much these guys have improved each time they come back from College. The curtain-raiser also looks to be an interesting game with 1st (Three Kings) vs 2nd (Ellerslie) in the Reserves league - we have been impressed with the development of some of the young players in both Reserves and U17’s Metro and there looks to be plenty of talent pushing for First Team game time in coming years. Not to mention the U19 Napier squad shouldn’t be to shabby either. Whatever the result, join us up in the clubrooms after the games for a cold drink and some hot food! Regards Tim Adams (Chairman)
WELCOME TO THE AVE
TODAYS MATCH OFFICIALS Referee: Wendy McNeely AR1: Trevor Middleton AR2: Lee Juno (Also Reserves Referee)
FROM THE DUGOUT Good afternoon everyone, A warm to Michaels Ave to Scott Mackay and his Three Kings United side for this round 20 match. We are getting to the final few rounds of the season with teams at either end of the table trying to secure valuable points for promotion or to avoid relegation. We have had an interesting month. After a couple of victories against Takapuna and Waiheke we have lost our last two away games against Bucklands Beach and Tauranga. This has been disappointing because we have been creating some good opportunities in front of goal but have not been capitalising on these moments to create scoreboard pressure against our opponent. We will be looking to improve in this area of the pitch this weekend. The previous match against Three Kings at Keith Hay Park was a close affair. Rowan Corbett profited from a defensive error to put us ahead and having lead the game till the 70 th minute we were disappointed to concede two Cam Howieson goals and lose 2-1. We will certainly be trying to reverse that scoreline this time around. We are expecting a tough match against a side that is pushing for one of the two promotion spots. I hope you all enjoy the game. Fred de Jong

TAURANGA CITY VS ELLERSLIE AFC The Reserves headed into this game a little bit understrength and a bit sore after last weeks loss to Bucklands Beach, which makes catching Three Kings for the title very unlikely. Monju had work commitments so couldn’t make the trip, Caleb was sick and Lloyd and Ben Smith were both unavailable and Allan pulled up injured after training on Tuesday. Luckily we have a deep squad (as covered in previous reports) and a bunch of young U17’s players keen to get a game in Reserves, so Ben Alexander and Taylor Harrison got their call up’s and John Murphy got the start he has been working hard for (and the armband). Jordan Oosterhof also made the bench as he worked his way back into full fitness after a length injury break. Tauranga started well and looked like they could threaten early on but once the Reserves found their footing on a tricky surface they started to dominate, both in our press and in possession with Karar, Das and Minjoo causing problems. After about 15 minutes it looked like one of those games when we needed to score to be able to get into top gear and while chances fell our way we just couldn’t find the composure we needed when it mattered. However the team kept working hard and Ben Alexander particularly was getting stuck into his work, allowing John to pick up loose balls and start building passages of play. At the back Jordan Bresler was putting on a masterclass at rightback to complement the fine work from Harry,
Jacob and Max – contributing on attack as well as cutting of any attacks down his side of the field. Second half came and Jordan Oosterhof entered the field and committed two fouls in the space of 5 seconds and had the referee in his ear after that – I think 11 or so games out had Jordie pretty fired up to come on and make a difference. Max unfortunately went down injured and club man Callum McKenzie took his place and continued the fine form of the backline, it was the other fullback however who made his mark on the result as Jordan Bresler broke forward and delivered a great aerial dinked ball to Das who had pulled away from his marker and powered a header home in injury time to give Ellerslie the points. Possibly harsh on Tauranga who fought hard all game but I think he had shown the more desire to win and created the most chances so to take 3 points home in the “Winning Van” was just rewards. Congrats to Taylor and Ben on their starting debuts and well done on your respective performances.

THREE KINGS UTD FIRST TEAM
TAURANGA CITY VS ELLERSLIE AFC It’s been a long time between victory drinks at Links Ave – back to 2005 infact. There was one change to the team for this game as Rowan came into the team after his drum and bass holiday in Europe – he replaced Patrick who has unfortunately been ruled out for the rest of the season. We had heard from a few other teams that Tauranga were sharp down the wings and those other teams were not wrong – some of the best wing play I have seen this season from the home team. I think we defended ok in patches – we got a bit lucky a couple of times and Kyryl made some important saves when required. At the other end we looked dangerous in patches – particularly when we could isolate Sam Twigg one on one with his defender, he was able to cause real drama. Midfield was probably were we struggled the most as we were unable to clamp down on their players and stop them from moving the ball around – early on we did manage to win the ball back a couple of times in the press but as the game developed the Tauranga players managed to consistently pass under pressure.
I think had we managed to not concede early-ish in the second half we may have seen some of the pressure flip back onto the home side as the crowd was getting a bit frustrated about the lack of a
goal (apparently we were really shit this season according to a bunch of them). However once we did concede, and it was a nice piece of play to unlock a scrappy chance, it did give the Blues the momentum to go for a second. Both goals involved some sharp play in midfield to get their right winger in some space – both cutbacks were not fantastic but they were in areas that had a percentage of danger and they were hit in with pace, increasing the difficulty level. Truth be told we would have hoped to deal with those two moments a bit better than we did. Once we were 2-0 down there was maybe a slight drop in tempo from Tauranga and an air of desperation from Ellerslie and we hit back straight away as Sam robbed the ball in midfield and played the ball to Dylan who laid a nice ball for Sam to run onto and smash a shot home with the outside of his right foot.
We did have a few more chances before the game ended but credit to Tauranga as they managed the dying minutes of the game well to minimise any danger. The home side deserved their points and it will be an interesting game back at Michaels Ave in a week or so. Lastly all the best to MAP this week as they continue their push for Promotion!!
