THE AVE - ISSUE 15
FRONT COVER: Jacob Carroll BACK COVER: The brains trust NEXT HOME GAME Hibiscus Coast 31st August @ 3pm
Welcome to Michaels Ave for another round of Lotto NRFL action Today we host Tauranga City for our 2nd game in 3 weeks, due to a curiosity of the draw and the game comes on the back of the news that Ellerslie AFC is safe in Men’s NRFL Div 1 for another season (meaning we will now extend our run in this league to 7 seasons in a row). Today’s game will be tough as we were really impressed with Tauranga in the game a couple of weeks ago and on the day maybe the score line of 2-1 flattered us a little. It’s been a tough season for us, but there have been some positives - we have seen 7 debuts in the first team already this season, with 2 of those being guys from our youth pathway. That means our home-grown number of players in the First Team this season is 18 (from a total of 28 players), which is impressive numbers. Now that we have escaped the relegation dogfight I suspect that number of youth players who make their debut will get even bigger. As the chairman at Ellerslie I have a clear vision of what NRFL football is all about and for Ellerslie it’s about providing a platform for the talented youth footballs at our club to showcase their ability, yes to be competitive we have some other players in the mix but I think we have the balance about right! Best of luck to all Ellerslie teams this weekend and make sure you join us up in the clubrooms for a cold beer and some hot chips after the game! Tim Adams (Chairman)
WELCOME TO THE AVE
TODAYS MATCH OFFICIALS Referee: Allan WILSON AR1: Free DIAO AR2: Riley GREENBURY (also Reserves Referee)
FROM THE DUGOUT Good afternoon everyone, Welcome to Nic and Barry along with their Tauranga side as we face off again after just a couple of weeks since our previous encounter. Our last match ended with Tauranga prevailing having made better use of the ball, created more opportunities and deservedly running out 2-1 winners. With just a few rounds remaining and with both teams unable to be promoted or relegated it is another opportunity to pick up points and try to move as high up the table as possible. I am sure there will be no repeat of the blow-out in the scoreline we saw in the final round last season. We will be looking to bounce back after a poor performance last week against Three Kings Utd. Having conceded early goals we eventually worked our way into the game but again were unable to score. That was our fourth loss in a row and it is a losing streak we will be working very hard today to try and put a halt to.
I am sure weather conditions will be more conducive to football than two weeks ago when a very strong wind negatively impacted the match. I hope you all enjoy the game. Fred de Jong

2019 NRFL DIV ONE
ELLERSLIE AFC vs THREE KINGS UTD This week we will focus on the Reserves as they did a superb double against a Three Kings team who (unless we see a miracle) will win the league with an impressive record of at this stage only loosing 2 games (both to Ellerslie). Ellerslie of course have a decent record of their own with only 3 losses and 2 draws to go alongside 14 wins – however it’s in goal scored where Three Kings have excelled, with 84 goals in 20 games (some 65 goals more than Waiheke who are the divisions lowest scorers). It also makes Ellerslie’s 51 goals scored look a little pedestrian, when in reality it’s not. The reality is that Ellerslie Reserves have shared the goals around, with Jacob’s goal against Three Kings adding his name to a list with 17 other scorers (and an own goal). Patrick, Monju and Das all share top spot in the Reserves golden boot race while Karar leads the rest of the pack by one goal, Ben (who is now at Metro), Hazem, Shak, Josh and Kojo all have three goals.
It’s the other end of the field where the Ellerslie Reserves have had a great season, with 9 clean sheets from 19 games and only 14 goals conceded in total – thats some record. In the last meeting of these two sides Michael Glenny played a captains knock from centre back as he battled away with the Three Kings players (alongside Adam Scott) to keep a clean sheet and he grabbed the winner as well with a neat header from a corner. This time around both those players have been promoted to the First Team and in their spots we have some young guns leading our backline, in Jacob, Harry and Callum who have really stepped up.
Three Kings seemed like they were missing a few players from when we played them the first time, they were still sharp and they rattled the woodwork numerous times throughout the game but it never really felt like we were getting run over, which it did feel like at times in the 1st round game. When Ellerslie did score, it came from an unlikely source as Jacob grabbed his first goal of the season with a strike from the edge of the area with the outside of his foot – a goal he later compared to this goal from Pavard in the world cup:
While there are some similarities, it’s a shame there is no video evidence we can show Jacob – fine goal that it was regardless. Ellerslie and their young backline (and Monju) kept frustrating Three Kings, who kept throwing numbers forward to try and grab a leveler, but the hosts had their strong bench to thank again as this time Josh Marshall came up with a goal to seal the win.
All season the bench has delivered for the Reserves and while it might be frustrating for some of the guys who have spent a bunch of time on the bench, but when they come on they deliver and it’s an important piece of the puzzle. Josh’s left foot finish after a quick break was just reward for his efforts this season and it left the Ellerslie Reserves in with a slight mathematical chance to catch Three Kings, but probably more importantly showed the young guys in the team have the ability to step up under pressure. Up next a challenging Tauranga City team at home.

TAURANGA CITY FIRST TEAM
ELLERSLIE AFC vs THREE KINGS UTD Three Kings were easily the better team in this contest – with Cam Howieson at the heart of their team the current All White was very hard to stop. After conceding an early goal it was tough for Ellerslie to keep the TKU players at bay and we ended the half 3-0 down. A better effort in the second half on the scoreboard saw Three Kings only add one more goal (a pretty expert level free kick from Cam), but it was a little disappointing that we couldn’t get on the scoreboard as we did create some chances throughout the game.
Check out the highlights here: External Link: http://www.hudl.com/v/2BTv59 Due to Fencibles dramatic loss to Mt Albert Ponsonby, Ellerslie are now safe and the work begins for next season for Fred and Terry as they look for a formula to make sure we are not in the same situation again next year – something the players need to take some responsibility for as well, which I’m sure they do. The next three weeks will be interesting…
