WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE It’s been a while since the Women’s First Team played at home in the league and with this being the final game of the season it’s a super interesting clash between league leaders Hibiscus Coast and 2nd placed Ellerslie. Both teams have set the pace for the league and it’s fitting that the title comes down to this game. Hibiscus come into the game with a 2 point lead, thanks to their 2-0 win over Ellerslie in the first round and have not dropped points since loosing their opening game against Northland. Ellerslie have also been in good form since playing Hibiscus and have only conceded 3 goals all season. Hopefully there is a big crowd from both clubs today and congrats in advance to whichever team takes out the league and the shot at Premier League that comes with it. It’s the biggest game for the women’s side of the club since the 21st of July 2002 at Bill McKinley Park when Ellerslie played Lynn Avon in the Women’s National Knockout Cup and lost 5-3 on penalties (having won 1-0 the year previous against the same opposition). Best of luck LADIES!

FROM THE DUGOUT Ellerslie’s Women’s First Team Coach and Director of Coaching Ryan Shiffman was interview about todays crunch clash between Ellerslie AFC and Hibiscus Coast by AFF, we have picked out some highlights below – to listen to the full interview check out AFF’s website or social media pages. AFF‘s Media Manager Mark Casson was the interviewer and he opened the questions by asking Ryan, how the vibe at training had been this week. Shiffman had this to say: ‘The players are really excited for the game and have been looking forward to it for a long time, it’s been kinda pushed back for a few weeks now, so there has been a real excitement building, along with the classic nerves but at the end of the day we are just looking forward to the game.’ Obviously not only does the winner of the AFF/NFF Conference League win a title but also a shot at NRFL Women’s Premier League, and Casson asked Shiffman what it would mean to Ellerslie if we managed to get promoted: ‘It’s a huge thing, I mean everyone knows the clubs who partake in that competition are seen as Women’s Clubs, because there is not so many of them, whereas on the Men’s side it’s a 12 team league and on the Women’s side it’s just 8, so people look at those clubs and say ok those are Women’s Clubs. For us we feel like we have been developing a lot of youth and junior players who have come through and get to the top end of our pathway, and because we have not been in that

WOMENS CONFERENCE space they drift off to someone else, which is fair enough because for them and their development that’s what they need. It would be huge for the club to be able to push into that space and hopefully provide that pathway for our own players but also some that have come through our system who come back to the club to really put the mark on the fact we are a Women’s Club as well and we are developing players and we have a pathway for them.’ Ryan is in his second year of coaching the Women’s Ryan accepting the AFF Women’s Knockout Cup in 2018 First Team at Ellerslie and he said the team has taken lessons from narrowly missing out last season to Onehunga Sports who have gone on to have a great debut season in the Women’s Lotto NRFL Premier League. The winner of the AFF/NFF Conference league will play off against Claudeland Rovers for a spot in the 2020 Women’s Lotto NRFL Premier League on the 8th and 15th of September.
NORTHLAND VS ELLERSLIE Sunday saw Ellerslie’s Women’s First Team meet in the early hours of the morning at Michaels Ave to embark on a trip to Whangarei to take on Northland FC in what is our penultimate AFF/NFF Women’s Conference game, and a very important game in the context of our season. Many thanks to Baradene for the usage of your vans – it was great to get almost a full team worth of players and a handful of supporters all traveling together, while we met Erin, Charlie and Maddy at Tikipunga Park prior to the game.
After a warmup for the players and a quick trip to Macca’s for the supporters the game was ready to be played and Northland came out with the power of a Taniwha behind them as they looked to grab an early goal and put us under real pressure – and they had chances to do just that, but a combination of good cover defence and when required a good save or intervention from Erin in goal kept the home side scoreless. As much as our strike force is a real strength of our game – it’s our ability to not concede which has been a real standout this season and by denying teams goals we are able to transform pressure back on the other team and invariably we grab a first half goal and that hurts those teams when it happens – and that’s exactly what happened as Hollie (in her first game back from injury) picked up a loose ball in midfield and played an excellent ball through a channel for Anita to burst onto – the Northland keeper came out on a good angle and forced Anita to pass the ball to her left to
Leigh who was able to burst onto the pass and finish well into a relatively unmarked goal. That was the halftime score and Northland struggled to contain us after we opened the scoring, as the game swung back to our favour after their hot opening to the game. The second half Northland came out again and were hunting a goal but didn’t cause us the same issues they did in the first half as we were a little more settled and controlled the ball a little better – we grabbed our second goal after a great piece of attacking defending as we pressed high and Hollie intercepted a backpass, rounded the stranded keeper and dribbled the ball home to double the score. Northland were valiant and threw everything at us, and while we were maybe not at our complete best we still did the job and nabbed another clean sheet and kept our record up of winning every game we have scored in. The league takes the shape of a shambles for the next couple of weeks as AFF and NFF struggle with the relatively simple task of scheduling cup games on the same weekend, so I’m not sure when our last league game against Hibiscus (which will decide the league winner) will be – but hopefully sanity prevails and we can get it played on a date which doesn’t disadvantage either team and we can get the showpiece final game everyone wants to see.
