WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Welcome to the final game of the 2019 season - a season that has gone from strength to strength for the Ellerslie Women’s First Team , today we welcome Claudelands Rovers to Michaels Ave for the crucial second leg of the Women’s NRFL Playoff Series.
I would say Claudelands arrive as favourites based on the fact they have only spent one season outside of the NRFL and so they have the experience in their group to know what it takes in crucial games - due to the away goals rule Ellerslie do hold a slight edge at what is effectively halftime in this tie. It’s only appropriate at this point to thank a bunch of people who have been amazing this season - so big thanks to the coaching staff, Ryan and his assistants, Callum, Brendon, Ella and Ian and specialist coaches Kris Pinnock (GK’s), Alejo Perez Leguizamon (Fitness Coach/Sports Scientist) and physios Kojo Norku and Aaron Collin. Big thanks to our extended support staff including Sarah Broadbent, Deb Tutty (when not playing) and the Iguana’s who have been awesome fans all season. Best of luck to both teams today - such a great prize on offer and Women’s NRFL Premier League would be better off with one of these two clubs!!!

FROM THE DUGOUT Welcome to what will be the final match of the 2019 Season for the Ellerslie Women’s First Team. We are in the second leg of a Vacancy Playoff with Claudeland Rovers. Both teams are vying for a spot in the Women’s Premier League. Last match was incredibly entertaining with the Ellerslie Women jumping out to a 2-0 lead from two corner kicks and a flurry of other chances to pull further away. At the half Claudelands regrouped and came out exceptionally strong, putting Ellerslie under a lot of pressure. It was another 2 corner kicks (all 4 from the same corner) that got Claudelands back to level, their second with just moments remaining in stoppage time. An exciting finish to what was a fair and well played game. With two away goals, the math is simple for the home side. Any win or a 0-0 or 1-1 draw will see Ellerslie through to the Women’s Premier League in 2020. A 2-2 draw will send the team to penalties. Any win for Claudelands or any draw 3-3 or higher will send them through. A lot on the line for both clubs so I expect it to be a passionate and well contested match.

WOMENS CONFERENCE I’d like to finish up the final report of the season with a massive thank you to everyone who has been a part of this team and those who have helped get the team to where they are. A huge thank you to Alejo for being an amazing sports scientist for the team. Thank you to our Physios Aaron and Kojo. We have heavily relied on them down the stretch. Thank you to Kris Pinnock for continuing to work with our Goalkeepers all season. The three wise men of Ian Davidson, Brendon Smith and Callum McKenzie as part of the coaching staff. Finally, a massive thank you to Tim Adams for all the effort he puts into this team, women’s football and the club overall. We could not be here without him. I hope everyone enjoys the match and thank you for coming down to support, Ryan Shiffman
ELLERSLIE vs CLAUDELANDS ROVERS By Tom Rowland (Stuff.com) For the first 45 minutes it looked dire for Claudelands Rovers in the LottoNRFL Women's promotion play-offs against Ellerslie AFC, but an inspired second half performance led by Rachel Porteous hauled the Hamilton side back into the tie with it all to play for in Auckland next Sunday. Claudelands were without two of their key players from the second half of the season, with both Leanna Ryan and Lauren McErlean unavailable for the tie, and in the first half it looked as if the latter's presence was missed as Claudelands struggled to settle in the midfield.
Ellerslie AFC were dominant throughout the first 45, their passing precise and accurate, and were good value for the two goals they had scored in the opening 20 minutes. Were it not for the goalkeeping heroics of Amberley Hollis in the first half, the tie could have well been put to bed, such were the Auckland's side dominance. In the second half, the game flipped on its head as Claudelands came out to play their game. Early on in the second half from a corner, Rachel Porteous fired a rocket into the Ellerslie box which somehow found its way into the back of the net, lifting the home side's spirit.
Ellerslie's AFC defence still stood strong and despite the tenacious work of Stella Neems, Rhiannon Jones and in particular Stacey Palmer, a second goal seemed to be out of reach. Evahn Martinsen and Olivia Schuler were brought on to provide fresh legs out in the wide area, with the latter playing a critical role later on in the game.
Emily Woollaston was brought on, with Palmer dropping back, and found the energy to keep going in the midfield. The fresh legs proved pivotal, as pressure from Emily Woollaston forced a corner for Claudelands. The delivery found Schuler at the near post who composed herself to whip a ball across goal, which Rhiannon Jones turned home with the help of her backside to level the tie in the 90th minute. It leaves the overall tie at 2-2, and making next week's game an all to play for. A 1-0 win would be enough for Claudelands to be promoted, but if the score remains level on aggregate, then the away goal rule (away goals counting as two) will come into effect.
