Welcome back to Michaels Ave to all our members, supporters and today’s key visitors Manukau City. Kevin Fallon brings his team to Michaels Ave after a bit of a rough start to the season with games against one of the competition favourites in Western Springs and then MAP who were unlucky to miss promotion last season. After having been in NRFL Div 1 since 2006 (except for 2013) it’s interesting to see new teams come up (and down) in what is a very tough and competitive league.
For us we got a bit of a bogey off our back last weekend when we won for the first time at Stanmore Bay, we played well but still lots of things to work on as well – but you can’t sneeze at 6 points at this stage of the season. Speaking of 6 points the Reserves have got off to a flyer as well – which is massively important to them and to us as a club – we run one NRFL squad so it’s important with pressure on for places that players are performing regardless of what team they play in so to have both teams with 6 point starts to the season is really pleasing. Our Women’s side of the club kicked off last week with our Conference teams picking up a pair of wins against Lynn Avon who were relegated from Premier League last season – the game didn’t quite live up to the famous Ellerslie vs Lynn Avon clashes in the early 2000’s when both teams bossed the Uncle Toby's comp. However Nicola will be thrilled with the 8-2 win first up for the First Team while Lane will be disappointed that Lynn Avon Reserves defaulted.
For those that don’t know we will continue to run a feature each program for the Mental Health Foundation of NZ – if you feel you need to talk to someone please reach out and if you feel like donating to such an important cause – good on ya! #checkonyourmates The Clubrooms is fully open this weekend, both the bar and the kitchen will be ready to serve you – it will be exciting to see the clubrooms full again now that the bottom fields are almost fully open – I can’t wait! Last Word: FIRE UP FOR THE NIX as they have one last chance to make the top 6 against Sydney FC which is live at 7:30pm on Saturday night (in the clubrooms) Cheers Tim Adams Senior Club Chairman ELLERSLIE AFC

The NRFL Div 1 preview is back - here we will intro each of the weekends NRFL games and give some (maybe) insightful information about the clashes - and of course we will try and pick a result. Melville Utd vs North Shore Utd Allen Hill Stadium @ 3pm Our opening game of the 3rd round is a battle between the media darlings of this years competition you would have to be living in a hole not to have seen at least one or two articles about these two sides. Both sides have lived up to their media hype thus far, but in this game one of them is going to have their perfect record blemished. The game also features a couple of inform strikers with Melville's Marc Evans and Shore's Ashley Ngadela in red hot form. PREDICTION: Melville yet to be really tested but I think they will edge this one. Mt Albert Ponsonby vs Metro FC Anderson Park @ 3pm MAP are getting a reputation for starting the season slowly with rock solid defence being their base platform, they may have lost a major attacking threat in the offseason but they have recruited well from Coach McKay's old club Three Kings and it shouldn't be too long before the Anderson Park faithful have something to cheer about. For Metro the New North Road derby has probably came a little early in the season as they struggle with a massive injury toll - but maybe this game can kick start their season, it probably couldn't have started much worse. PREDICTION: Can't see MAP recording a third straight 0-0 draw, home advantage enough to give them the win. (not sure why this isn't a Friday night game? Lights at MAP fail the council test?) Oratia Utd vs Hibiscus Coast Parrs Park @ 3pm Early reports from out West is that Tia are in real trouble with a couple of large defeats in the first two weeks - Cain is an experienced coach though so his side won't give up easily and will be looking to bounce back against a Coast side who had a good run in pre-season but hit a speed bump last weekend at home. It's too early in the season to predict where these two sides will end up but this fixture will give one of them a chance to rebuild after a rocky start. PREDICTION: Coast probably too strong for the Westies - could be close though. Ellerslie AFC vs Manukau City Michaels Ave @ 5pm The ponies second home game and first night game of the season and they are up against a Manukau City team who last year were almost all conquering in claiming promotion from the 2nd Division. The last time these two sides met in league action at Michaels Ave was in 2002 when Ellerslie took a 3-1 win which was enough to avoid the drop, Manukau however couldn't and also got relegated twice in successive years to be bounced out of NRFL football - they won a playoff in 2011 to return to NRFL football for the 2012 season and after a little blip have not looked back since. PREDICTION: Tough one - maybe the advantage of turf enough for the home side. Western Springs vs Waitemata FC Seddon Fields @ 5:15pm News filtered through this week that Springs have made another SSP signing with Darren White joining Bale, Blake, Shelly, Dickinson etc. With Waitemata having lost their "star" players over the off season this clash is a bit of the haves vs the have nots. Springs also have the advantage of being a bit fresher having not played this past weekend as their clash with neighbours Metro was moved to Tuesday night (for some reason) and then washed out. PREDICTION: Western Springs as our lock of the weekend. Tauranga City vs Franklin Utd Links Ave @ 3pm Two home games on the bounce gives Tauranga the chance to put some points on the board and they did just that last weekend when they dispatched Tia - Franklin also lost last week to early favourites Melville but the start of their season has been effected by the All Whites vs Fjii games so expect a much better showing from the Pukekohe based side this weekend, even with Sunday travel. yes Sunday in Tauranga :-( PREDICTION: Franklin to nick this one in our upset of the round

When the draw came out for the 2017 NRFL season you could sense the anticipation in the group when they noticed our first away game was at the undoubtedly beautiful Stanmore Bay Reserve. Hibiscus Coast probably didn't even realise how one-sided the league record between the two clubs was at their home venue, but I think they saw how serious we were - both in the way we played the game and in our depth of preparation. The match highlights above explain how the important moments of the game played out - what you didn't see was an interesting clash of differing styles with Coast happy to sit back on defence and occasionally press (particularly from inside out). With the ball Coast were particularly focused on switches of play to try and expose the channel outside our fullbacks - which from time to time paid off for them. The game itself felt fairly even particularly in the first half with Ellerslie probably only edging the game on the weight of chances created.
The second half was far more turbulent as Ellerslie came out on fire and it only took 7 minutes in the second half to re-take the lead and then a further 11 minutes to claim 2 more goals and the 3 points from the fixture. Coast however found their feet and had their best period of the game but were unable to further inflict damage on Jason's goal - truth be told we had let a bit of intensity drop once we grabbed the 3 goal lead (something to work on) but we still threatened in patches and Jordan was unlucky not to pinch a cheeky 5th. EAFC 1st Goal - OG Coast who were pretty keen to play out of the back, but had already had one small mishap when Fletcher let a backpass slip under his foot for a corner continued with the tactic. Fletch took a quick goal kick to the Coast #6 who was immediately pressed by Adam Barkley - the Coast player trying to play safe slid the ball back towards where Fletch had been but the Coast custodian have moved towards the side of the goal to offer a better angle and so was left stranded as the ball rolled insisde his far upright. COAST 1st Goal - Daniel Cyra After winning a free kick just inside the Ellerslie half Coast threw a lot of numbers into the box which made it difficult for Jason - a perfect ball in from the unfortunate own goal scorer which was headed home by longtime Coast player Daniel Cyra to level the scores

EAFC 2nd Goal - Art Twigg Dylan broke down a promising Coast attack and then slipped Callum Waters the ball - Callum needed no 2nd invite to drive at the Coast defence - he then delivered a perfect ball to Andrew Wallace's run - but in true Andy fashion he cheekily played a 1 -2 with the upright of the goal which left Art with a relatively simple tap in to take the lead.
EAFC 3rd Goal - Adam Barkley Adam's reward for a top game was the third goal - he had previously hit a post and a crossbar so it was fitting that he got his name on the scoresheet. The buildup to the goal began when Andy Dalton switched a ball across to Dylan Horgan who in turn was able to drive down the line before squaring the ball to Adam in the box who smashed his shot in past the hapless Fletch. EAFC 4th Goal - Sangster Crawford Scoring his first goal of the season had fired Adam up and he broke through the heart of the Coast defence with the ball hunting for a 2nd - he went around Fletch before setting up Art on the penalty spot - Art in turn decided to disguise his expert pass to an unmarked Sangster as a mishit shot. Regardless Sangster did what every good winger does and he drove the ball home from the back post with a Coast defender having no chance stopping it.
All in all an enjoyable game to watch and some improvements from last weekend's game and some things to work on against another tough team in the shape of Manukau City at Michaels Ave this coming Saturday evening. Preparation was exaggerated throughout the week. Playing away meant the first game on grass, something that was bit of a stumbling block last season. However, with the fields looking lush at Stanmore Bay, a pre-warm up helped settle our touch and range of passing. After a discussion on how we wanted to implement our style of play and to potentially deal with threats from Hibiscus Coast, the gents eager to get the ball rolling. Even beating the Referee out onto the paddock.
Kick off arrived and the game started, 0-0. An action-packed start with chances at either end. Through hard work on and off the ball, we proceeded to dominate possession in the middle third. Play continued in this manner, Ellerslie in controlled possession and Hibiscus looking for a breakaway goal. Neither team threatened and as it started, is how it finished at half time, 0-0.
Half Time: Hibiscus Coast 0-0 Ellerslie Team talk at half time was interesting. The stats provided evidence that we controlled play (60%-40%) but barely troubled Hibiscus number one. Group consensus was to shift the ball quicker to exploit the gaps through the middle and channels out wide, especially down our right flank. Second half started, 0-0. In the first ten minutes, not much had changed from the first half. Confident and purposeful possession from Ellerslie did lead to our first meaningful attempt. Cross from the right flank lead to a powerful header, but from literally nowhere, the keeper plucked it out from going in top bin. From the resulting corner, Hibiscus stemmed a counter attack and had three glorious chances within seconds to take first blood. Miraculously, the post, the keeper and some clinical defending kept the ball from rippling the net. Both teams started to make changes. Within moments of being introduced, Milosevic powered a header over the Hibiscus back line for Shohei to calmly slot home after breaking the offside line. Moments later, Shohei was turning provider for Witteveen. Grabbing his first of a brace, Witteveen was on hand to place the ball neatly under the keeper from 18 yards out. The team kept probing and sure enough the pressure mounted, leading the Ellerslie third and Witteveen second. A through ball from Shohei was chased down by Witteveen, which he managed to nick past the keeper. Not panicking, Witteveen cut back onto his right and deliciously chipped the keeper from a tight angle.

A massive effort and performance from the team, which were resilient at; retaining possession, putting their bodies on the line and spurring each other on. Focus is on the next game (Manakau City, Home) and training sessions prior.
