THE AVE - ISSUE 2

FRONT COVER: Rowan Corbett BACK COVER: Divikesh Deo NEXT HOME GAME vs Bucklands Beach 4th May

Welcome to Michaels Ave for another round of Lotto NRFL Today we welcome Joe Daw and his Takapuna AFC side to Michaels Ave for an ANZAC classic. Last weekend on Easter Friday we travelled to Fencibles and came out ontop of a 7 goal thriller, but before the game kickoff off both sides observed a minutes silence for Peter Bryson who was a coach for Pakuranga Town (one of the clubs which merged into Fencibles) and was Grandad to Ellerslie members Jamie and Ruby Bryson - our thoughts are with all the family members. RECAP Ellerslie have started the season in decent fashion with 2 wins from 4 games - which at a glance looks like a solid start to the season, however it’s at the attacking end where we are excelling with late winners against both Waitemata and Fencibles. Scoring goals is always a positive and it’s nice to see so many after we failed to test Robby Graham in goal for MAP in our first game - however since then we have looked pretty decent with our goal-scoring.

CONGRATS The season is only 4 games old but we have already had a number of debutants in the First Team, Ollie Chiaroni, Ben Hughes, Patrick Fahey, Caleb Pahina all fall into that category while in the reserves we have really seen the youth shine through with a number of the U17’s getting involved.

WELCOME TO THE AVE

TODAYS MATCH OFFICIALS Referee: Charlie Tseng AR1: Len Gattsche AR2: Adam Pyne (also Reserves Referee)

FROM THE DUGOUT Good afternoon and welcome to Michaels Ave for this Anzac Day match against cross-town rivals Takapuna AFC. I would like to congratulate Takapuna on their promotion to NRFL Division 1 in 2018 and wish them all the best for the season.

For Ellerslie it’s been a season of drama in the majority of our matches this year. Last minute 43 victories against Waitemata and Fencibles have been offset with a last minute 2-1 loss to FHM in week three of the competition. Certainly we have been providing decent entertainment for those watching, although it has been rather nerve-wracking for the coaching staff as games have swung back and forth right through to the ninetieth minute and beyond. From a coaching perspective we feel we have been improving since week one of the competition and have been working on trying to retain possession of the ball in key areas for longer. If we can do this we feel we have the attacking ability to create scoring chances and we have already shown we have players that can finish. While goals have been in good supply we need to be more miserly in defence. This was a strength of the team last season and is something we are working to rectify. I hope everyone enjoys the game.

TAKAPUNA AFC FIRST TEAM

FENCIBLES UTD VS ELLERSLIE AFC The Reserves came into this match with a perfect record, but in the end they were lucky to come out with one point with a late goal to debutant Hazem Al Fayad late in the game. Several changes to the team from the previous match saw Ellerslie field a new combination in the back four as Adam Scott stepped into CB to cover for regular centre back and skipper Mike Glenny who was on first team duty, as was Denny Chand. That saw first starts of the season for Will Sargent and Callum McKenzie. Monju anchored the midfield and took the captains armband, his partners in midfield were Hossain and Kojo - Ross Borrill (on loan from Champs for the day) took the center forward spot and Josh and Shukrullah provided the pace and trickery out wide. The majority of the first half was spent watching Fencibles manufacture chances for Kyryl to save but against the run of play Ross picked up a loose ball and placed a nice side foot shot past the stranded keeper. Fencibles continued to throw the kitchen sink at Ellerslie but just couldn't get past young Kyryl who was putting in his best performance for the club - a real highlight in the first half.

In the second half Coach Sebastien went to his bench to introduce U17's players Luke Tyro, Ben Alexander and Hazem Al Fayad as well as Minjoo Kim, but most of all he imparted on the team that we needed to be much better and the second half was a reflection of that. In what was a complete 180 from the first half, Ellerslie dominated the chances in the 2nd half but couldn't extend their lead and then the momentum shift happened. Fencibles broke into the box and Kyryl come out to challenge the Fencibles player and unfortunately brought him down to concede a penalty which was converted to equal the game. Fencibles didn't stop there as they took the lead against the run of play when they broke down our right and created enough space for a shot to be fired off which Kyryl saved (of course) but a Fencibles player picked up the loose ball and slid it home to give them a deserved but against the run of play (in the 2nd half) lead. It would have been understandable at this point for the young Ellerslie team to play out the rest of the game without changing the result, however there is a bit of resilience across both squads this season and after having a goal disallowed when the referee didn't play advantage debutant Hazem Al Fayad fired in an excellent volley at the back post after Jacob flicked on Monju's corner, as the last kick of the game it was an amazing way to finish off the game.

FENCIBLES UTD VS ELLERSLIE AFC

FENCIBLES UTD VS ELLERSLIE AFC by EAFC Media Round Four of the Lotto NRFL saw Ellerslie take a short trip across town via the Panmure Bridge to play rivals Fencibles United on Good Friday at a picturesque Riverhills Park - A venue that was used by Suburbs during the recently completed national league and has a wonderful playing surface.

A perfect day for football with plenty of sun, two teams scoring heaps of goals and a good cheerful crowd getting in -behind their respective teams. An open attacking game of football was the cherry on top of the day. Ellerslie started the game attacking the clubrooms end of Riverhills Park and while the theme for this entire game was end to end chances I think even Fencibles fans would agree Ellerslie had the upper hand in the opening exchanges. However it was not until we had spurned some very good chances that we grabbed the opening goal in the 38th minute - the goal came after Rowan was bundled off the ball in what was a bit of a soft foul if I'm honest. Dylan stepped up and made no mistake as he hit a nice right foot curler which skipped past the wall and settled in the back of the net for his 2nd goal of the season. As I mentioned earlier there was no lack of chances in this game and the rest of the half played out in that fashion as the t eams traded punches without being able to land any blows of note. Halftime saw us make a change as Jordan Oosterhof who was starting his first game of the season after knee trouble most of la st season went down injured late in the first half as he charged down a clearance and took the ball right on the tip of his foot which jarred his knee hopefully it's just a slight strain and he can be back to full force again soon. That change meant Ben Hughes made this First Team debut as we shuffled the back to accommodate the tall target man striker - Fencibles

also made a tactical tweak but the theme of the first half stayed true in the second half as the teams continued to attack an d leave space for a counter attack. Dylan Horgan made the most of the space on offer in the 52nd minute as he picked up the ball well outside the box and drove i nto the box beating two players in the process before sliding the ball past the out-rushing keeper to double our lead. We continued to knock on the door after that goal, looking for a third to kill the game off and chances came but we just coul dn't convert them and then Fencibles struck back! A nicely weighted pass towards halftime sub Craig Allen saw Div rush out to block, which he did but the ball fell to another Fencibles player nearby and in the process of trying to stop him taking a shot Div brought him down and the referee obliged with the award of a spot kick. Shortly after that Fencibles drew level courtesy of another penalty - after Denish Chand unfortunately handled the ball off a cross - this gave Fencibles a boost and they went for the jugular, and were rewarded with a 3rd goal when Craig Allen got infront of Div from a corner and nodded the ball home - which gave the home team the lead for the first time in the match.

Ellerslie fought back and drew level at 3-3 when there was a massive scramble in the Fencibles box and it looked like Rowan had scored his second short distance goal in two weeks but a Fencibles player just cleared it off the line, but to no avail as Seb Poelman slammed the loose ball home. That wasn't all the action complete though as Rowan latched onto a diagonal ball and raced into the box, but as he was contem plating a shot a Fencibles player slid in from behind and brought Rowan down in the box for a third penalty of the game - Dylan stepped up to the plate and slammed the ball home, hard and high. That was the final scoring play in this 4-3 epic (our second of that scoreline this season) and at this rate the coaching staff are going to have to start carrying heart medicine. Takapuna up next on ANZAC day in what is another crucial clash!
