Welcome to Michaels Ave - a particularly warm welcome to all our visiting teams including the two Waitemata NRFL teams and Fencibles Women’s Conference on Sunday. This is our second edition of the “The Ave” for 2018 and unfortunately we are still not at 100% health - the tardiness of the fixtures has meant we have been unable to produce a full set of them for this week or next week as per normal - so we recommend you pop onto AFF’s website and check out the fixtures there. We are also not 100% up and running on the pitches either as Michaels Ave #3 and Simson Reserve remain closed this weekend due to maintenance - hoping we can open them up for next weekend! Also the lights in the inner ring down on the lower fields are still not installed but we are getting there. In good news the council have finished the acoustic barriers around the Number 1 field and are now focusing on fixing the spectator fencing which in places had become a shambles. Looking at Saturdays and Sundays key fixtures we first have Waitemata who were tough opposition for us last year taking a draw and a win in our two NRFL Div 1 clashes - a change in coaching staff won’t make them any easier and it will be a battle for both teams after losses in both teams last rounds. The Reserves started the season with a flyer and came down to earth a little last week so will want to right their wrongs against a Waitemata Reserves team which has a familiar face in Bruce Gibb in goal. For the ladies on Sunday the Reserves face up against Onehunga Sports in the new AFF Champs league while the First Team face title challengers Fencibles in what is a tough start for Ryan, Brendan, Kate and the team. No matter the result we look forward to seeing you up in the clubrooms after your match! Cheers Tim Adams Senior Club Chairman - ELLERSLIE AFC

Week 3 of NRFL Div 1 action comes out of the blocks fighting with some big clashes as teams tussle for early season form. Of particular interest is Waiheke's home game against recently relegated Manurewa, with the islanders keen to test themselves against a recent premier league team. Forrest Hill Milford vs Hibiscus Coast Becroft Park @ 3pm So first up on the menu is a NFF derby under lights at Becroft Park on Friday Night - A new entry to the Friday Night Club. Hard to get a read on both these clubs so far but you have to probably favour FHM having come down from Premier League last season. PREDICTION: FHM by a lazy goal or so. Mt Albert Ponsonby vs Oratia Utd Anderson Park @ 3pm Another Anderson Park clash - with Oratia who have copped a rough start to the season the opposition this time. MAP are a strong and hardworking team who make the most of their abilities, Oratia will be keen to grab some points and get off the doughnut. PREDICTION: MAP with a strong 1-0 win Melville Utd vs Fencibles Utd Gower Park @ 3pm Big game here - with Sam Wilkinson up against a club that Roger (his Dad) spent a lot of time at working with the younger players, so maybe some family bragging rights are also on the table with a side dish of 3 points on offer. PREDICTION: Bit of an upset - 2 all I reckon Tauranga City vs North Shore Utd Links Ave @ 3pm City and Shore have had a mixed bag start to the season and both teams will want to pick up maximum points (who doesn’t) to get some early season form under the belt. Shore seem to have picked up a character from Jack and the Beanstalk with Adam New playing the role of the giant - while we hear Tauranga City are fielding the tallest team in NRFL Div 1 history - Someone check the record books!! PREDICTION: Tauranga tough to play at home, 3-1 win. Waiheke Utd vs ManurewaAFC Onetangi Sports Park @ 3pm An interesting clash here, Marty’s young charges will be excited to take on the “glamour” story of the NRFL in the Islanders. The noise and crash and bash of the Waiheke fans will be a test for the young Rewa lads and the challenge on the pitch will also be a biggie PREDICTION: Waiheke good at home and stung last week , 4-1 win. Ellerslie AFC vs Waitemata FC Michaels Ave @ 5pm Our final game of the round - and I’m going to chicken out and predict a draw, just so we don’t get on anyone’s bad side. Not that I’m doubtful that we can win….. PREDICTION: Draw 1-1.

An Afternoon at ‘The Anderson’

NRFL – 30.03.18 Round 2 – Mt Albert Ponsonby vs Ellerslie Anderson Park – Reserves @ 12:30pm, First Team @ 3pm First away game of the season – an all to familiar trip across town to Anderson Park to brave the witt and charm of the MAP balcony. What is not all that familiar is playing this game in the afternoon instead of the evening – what we hear is the lights at MAP have failed AFF’s regulations so it’s daytime football from here on in. Not ideal considering the snug nature of the changing rooms but that’s all out of the hands of the home side as I’m sure they would be keen to see Friday Night football return in the near future. The council have done a great job sealing the carpark and sprucing up the place to complement the excellent viewing area that MAP themselves installed. It’s a pity like many other grounds at the moment that council have neglected to pay much attention to the actual pitch, which was pretty average to be fair. Moving onto the games and first up the Reserves suited up ready for a tough challenge against a MAP team who were right in the title fight last season – we had a few changes as Aalok who debuted for the Reserves last week was away as was Luke MacKay. Jordan Oosterhof came into the team after playing off the bench for the First Team last week and Seb Poelman grabbed some valuable minutes.

18

A bit of a nervy start by Ellerslie who to be fair struggled a bit to adjust to the pitch was punished on 21 mins when Tom Konusi pounced on a chance which MAP created after an excellent switch of play (something that was evi-

dentially a MAP tactic across both teams) and he buried the chance expertly. As the game wore on the general feeling was the away side gained more and more of a foothold in the game and after a few changes in the first half and at halftime the Mike Glenny led reserves pushed on for something out of the game. Sho Shigematsu who scored last week off the bench was injected in the 65th min and it only took 5mins for him to make an impact. Using his pace he raced after a ball played down MAP’s left and managed to stretch and dink the ball back inside into the penalty box – A MAP player believing the ball had crossed the line reached up and punched the ball away, leaving the referee little option but to award a penalty. According to Mike Glenny who has a very good record of playing fair spoke to the referee about the ball being out of play and asked him to award a goal kick but the referee was not to be moved. So Monju stepped up to the spot and put the penalty away – not the ideal way to equalise. There were further chances for both teams to decide the points in the remaining 20 minutes but the scorers were not troubled any further and when the final whistle blew there were a few tense words exchanged between MAP and the match official. MAP probably unlucky as they would have felt they defensively did enough to get a clean sheet – hard to know but to be honest it was tough to see where a goal was coming from for the away side. NRFL Reserves Div 1 Mount Albert Ponsonby 1, Ellerslie 1 (Halftime 1-0)

19

So up next was the First Team game, a few changes in the team here as well with Denish out after injuring a hammy in last weeks draw with Coast and Jordan getting some minutes in the Reserves. This meant we welcomed back Lloyd as specialist GK cover as last weeks RGK Ben took a more traditional spot at left back and Conrad made his first squad of the year after sitting out last week due to a 2017 suspension.

Just like the Reserves the First Team started a little slowly and just like last week we copped an early setback when we conceded a goal from a half cleared corner. An excellent ball back into the heart of the box saw a great setup touch by a MAP player so his mate could slam it home from about the penalty spot. We reacted better than we did last week when we somehow managed not to concede another goal as Coast really got stuck into us – however that resolve was undone by what I am going to coin a MAPesque goal. Stew MacKay carried the ball out of defence and broke our midfield line before playing a nice ball wide to Shaneel Sharma who was in some space – he took a touch and played an excellent cross to Brad Rathbun who had found some space between our central defenders and coolly guided his header into the side netting inside the far post for 2-0. I call this MAPesque because they practiced a very similar move a couple of times in their warm up, I doubt this will be the last time they score from a cross!

20

Aside from the two goals there was not much else to write home about in the

first half – other than two pieces of action at either end of the field. First Ernesto made a break into their box and was knocked down from behind by the MAP player, probably a penalty but the referee to be fair to him was not in a good position and declined to take any action. Just prior to halftime Div was involved in another piece of controversial play as he raced out to a long ball but was beaten to it by Brad Rathbun, who took a large touch and then took the contact from Div who couldn’t stop himself – it was wide and Rathbun was probably not going to be able to collect his touch but a foul and a yellow card was still a relief, even if I think it was about the right call. At halftime Fred and Terry made a couple of changes with Rowan making his first appearance of the season along with Conrad who moved into the holding spot for the second stanza.

MAP in the second half put up a masterclass defensively – which was evident last season as well – which led to us banging on the door but unable to come close to opening it. We threw on Ross to bolster our attacking options but just couldn’t manufacture a chance for Robbie to save. So back to the drawing board for the lads as we take on Waitemata FC next weekend back home at “The Ave” – congrats to MAP for their points and our condolences for your loss of a life member during the game #footballfamily

NRFL Div 1 Mt Albert Ponsonby 2, Ellerslie 0 (halftime 2-0)

2018 and the build in to the season has been a challenge, with the late withdrawal of previous coach Nicola Demaine who refocused her efforts on youth development (and remains a key person within the club) it meant we were a bit behind the 8-ball when it came to setting our 2018 coaching lineup. I won’t bore you with the details but huge thanks to Nicola and Lane who took early pre-season trainings while we looked to confirm our coaching lineup and also the players themselves who bar one or two players stood by us and showed patience when we needed it, a rare quality in footballers and something we hope to repay as the season goes on. So our 2018 coaching team consists of

Ryan Shiffman Brendan Smith Kate Lambert Tim Adams There is a real mix there of coaching expertise with Ryan and Brendan and the power of an ex player in Kate who donned Ellerslie colours in our First Team for many seasons and the organisational expertise of our club chairman behind the scenes.

2018 will see us for the first time run a combined First Team and Reserves squad on the womens’ side of the club - this will be an interesting process as both teams look to create their own little identity but also work much closer together than we have in previous years.

24

The first couple of weeks of the season will be tough as we play

a bit of catchup but we believe we have the strength across both teams to have back to back winning seasons. Without further ado: Women’s First Team Erin Simperinham Ash Taylor Steph Jones Ayla Surtees Deb Tutty Erin Mattingley Anita Trudgen Caitlin Janes Akhita George Sarah Broadbent Anna Howden Kez Kelly Maggie Jaques Florence Noble Ella Wiebe
