The Ave - Issue Three feat Waitemata FC

TUNE INTO SKY SPORT 4 on SUNDAY at 7pm for the Phoenix’s last game of the season as they take on the Roar for pride.

Come on you NIX

At the time of writing this report I’m thoroughly disappointed (and relieved I guess) that Cyclone Cook didn’t end up coming - after a bit of a media beat up we ended up with a bit of a drizzle and a little wind. That’s not to say we don’t appreciate some other places in NZ are going tough times! This weekend we welcome Bob Sova and Waitemata FC to Michaels Ave for the first time that I can remember - Waitemata had a storming season last year which saw them win the NRFL Div 2 title and promotion to Div 1 and while it might be a bit of a changed team they will have all sorts of motivation to make sure they stay in the division this season - good luck to them! Easter weekend see’s all our Men’s and Women’s Community Football have a rest along with the Junior and Youth football, also Women’s Conference have the weekend off as well, so there is only NRFL action to follow. Our double header see’s us travel across town to Metro FC on Friday for a day time fixture at Phyllis Street, have not experienced that for a while. Waitemata who we play on Monday at Michaels Ave hosted MAP on Friday night out at McLeod Park. Don’t forget the reserves open both games and in true Ellerslie Reserves fashion they have hit the ground red hot this season and if they can negotiate their way through all 6 points this weekend will have a very handy start to the season. I said above that only NRFL football was on this weekend - not quite true - our Third team have organised a friendly with a Argentinian club side called Club Italiano, that fixture is 1pm on Saturday at Michaels Ave. Last Word: Don’t forget to support the Nix in their last game of the season on Sunday game details below the contents to your left. Cheers Tim Adams Senior Club Chairman ELLERSLIE AFC

The NRFL Preview is back and today we are looking at Round 5 played on Easter Monday - at the time of writing this the Easter Friday games have not been played so there is a little more guess work than usual - that said last week we did get two out of the 6 results right, so we are not complete dummies... Mt Albert Ponsonby vs Melville Utd Anderson Park @ 3pm MAP come into this game on the back of arguably the easier fixture having made the short trip across the western suburbs to McLeod Park, while Melville welcomed Neil Emblen's Western Springs to Gower Park in a clash of the "titans". I think this is the first game back from suspension for MAP's coach Scott McKay as he faces up against Lotto NRFL media darlings Michael Mayne and Sam Wilkinson. PICK: Was a bit of a shock to see Melville lose last weekend, can't seperate these two - DRAW Tauranga City vs Manukau City Links Ave @ 3pm In a battle of City's todays game see's Manukau travel south after hosting Oratia on Easter Friday, while Tauranga enjoy their third home game of the season but face a shortened recovery time for this game having to make their way back from Stanmore Bay. Another tough game for both sides who are probably still finding their feet in this division but have looked solid so far. PICK: Was impressed with Manukau last week but Tauranga have been on the improve - home advantage to steal it. Ellerslie AFC vs Waitemata FC Michaels Ave @ 3pm The ponies pick up their third home game of the season after a short trip to Metro FC on Friday while Waitemata come into this fixture having hosted MAP at the start of the Easter break. They will be wanting to bounce back after losing their last home game against Manukau City, while Waitemata will be keen to pick up some points here, and will hope they can add some points gained on Friday PICK: Have to stick my neck out and pick the home side to bounce back

Oratia Utd vs Metro FC Parrs Park @ 3pm Tia setup at home against Metro who hosted Ellerslie on Monday night, they come into this game having faced up against Manukau City on Friday evening. Both teams have not started as well as they would have liked but there is plenty of season left to catchup - Tia will be stoked to pick up their first win when they beat Coast in round 3 while Metro will be keen to get their injured players back PICK: Metro have a strong squad so if their injuries settle down they will be good - points here i think Hibiscus Coast vs Franklin Utd Stanmore Bay @ 3pm It's a clash of the extremities of Auckland as Coast get their 2nd home game over Easter, they face up against Franklin who faced league leaders Shore at home on Friday. Coast have not started the season as well as they did last season when they flew out of the blocks, while Franklin have strengthened in the off-season and look to be competitive this season PICK: Hard one - but Franklin have a lot of experience and Coast look a little light Western Springs vs North Shore (Tuesday Night) Seddon Fields @ 7:30pm It's a battle of the unbeaten teams (well at the time of writing) as Springs host Shore - not quite sure how the league allowed them to play Tuesday night but I guess it's no biggie, although this combined with Springs washed out "away" game against Metro at Seddon Fields means there is a little jiggery pokerry going on. PICK: Fresh Springs to pinch it.

How to look after yourself (Part 1) Right, I am going to take the opportunity to help refresh your memory about what to do when you have an injury. Very easy, but often forgotten/neglected. There are a high proportion of injuries that occur in football. In fact, there are more recorded injuries in football per 1000 hours than any other sport worldwide. These injuries range from small knocks (eg a blood nose) to more significant injury (ACL rupture, broken bones, Sudden Cardiac Arrest). FIFA have spent a lot of time, effort and money investigating these injuries, and have found some interesting patterns. The main pattern I will mention today is that there are a higher proportion of contact injuries and significant injuries (out for more than 3 months) occurring during match play, and a higher proportion of non-contact and moderate injuries during training. Another significant finding in most injury studies, FIFA or otherwise, is that the initial management of the injury is the strongest predictor of time away from sport. This means that what you do in the first 3-7 days after an injury will affect how well you bounce back following. RICE. Not just a good prematch meal, but an acronym for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. Also referred to as RICED (…Diagnosis), PRICE (Prevention), etc but you get the idea… Everybody knows this, or at least should. You will also be told this by your Primary First Aider. It is as simple as it gets. You need to REST the injured site to prevent the injury getting worse; apply ICE for 20 minutes every 2 hours for at least the first day or two to reduce the pain, and degree of swelling along with applying COMPRESSION and ELEVATING the injured area. Most people know about RICE, or at least have now had the memory jogged. However, what most people may not know is that we try to avoid HARM. HARM is the acronym for Heat, Alcohol, Rigorous Activity or Running, and Massage. All of these things increase blood flow, leading to an increase in swelling and inflammation, which then leads to increased pain and increased recovery time. Finally, listen! There is a reason why the Physio or Doctor gives you advice – it’s only for your benefit. At the end of the day, it’s you, your season and your team that’s affected by your injury, not us. We do not get any kind of thrill being a killjoy or nag, in fact we hate it. We are only trying to look out for your best interest and get you doing the best things to allow you to return to doing what you want to do.

12

If at any point you are not sure about what to do about an injury, just ask. We are easily accessible in person, by phone, or even through the magic of the interweb and Social Media. Yours in Sports Health.

Saturday evening was our first home game under lights at Michaels Ave this season, and it was also the first time for about three years that we had pretty much all the fields at “The Ave” back up and running, as the Reserves, and both our over 40’s teams played in the 2:30/2:45pm slots. Just on that I’m pleasantly surprised about how the fields down the bottom have come up – there has been some hurdles with layouts and of course the delay of the floodlighting but all in all it’s awesome to see more football played at our home venue and less of those pesky home away games (no disrespect to the people of Point England but no-one wants to go there). It was also a bit new hosting Manukau City who we had not had a chance to play for a fair few years now and while some of the faces in their team were familiar, as a team they were a bit of an unknown. It was little surprise to us however that Kevin Fallon had his City side well drilled and very organised – which left them free to express themselves on attack which they did very well. Probably the biggest difference between Manukau and the two teams we have played so far this season is that City pressed and pressed deep into our half, not content to make us play backwards – they also kept pressure on to try and force mistakes outside our box. It was a risky strategy on the big Michaels Ave pitch as they had to play a high line to be able to achieve this – but it was a masterstroke as our game plan very rapidly became trying to put the ball inbehind the City back four to let our pacemen stretch their legs. However this is not a strength in our team and execution of this lead to lots of turnover of the ball as City dropped and picked up our hopeful balls forward and quickly put us back under pressure. Truth be told for all Manukau’s tactical strength they didn’t boss the game entirely – the stats will show we held the ball for some long periods of the game and we created a few decent chances, but we all knew we were far from our best and at least some of that was down to the way City had setup against us.

18

City’s opening goal came in and unfortunate way as the ball was crossed into our box and Ben Shaw who was being slightly obstructed from the ball was only able to get enough contact on the ball with his diving header to lay the ball into Leo Berlim’s path – the veteran striker made no mistake with his 1v1 shot with Jason and celebrated his sides opening goal of the season. All three of our front men had half chances in the remainder of the first half with Sangster getting away down the right and laying on a ball that somehow missed everyone across the 6 yard box before Art was pinged on a tight offside while he was 1 on 1. The City GK also had to be applauded as he went about his work with no fuss and no errors. At halftime we felt in the game and pumped ourselves up for a bigger and better second half and to be honest while we also lost the second half 1-0 I was happy to see a response as we came out with more purpose and tactically a little smarter in the second half. There was less ball given away in buildup as we mounted several promising attacks, sadly though City were resolute on defence as they had a lead to defend which often gives away teams an extra spring in their step – they shut down most of our attacks with some good defensive play – our only complaint could be the amount of stoppages as tactical fouls mounted up, a ploy we think was designed to stop us getting any momentum. I think some cards early in the half from the referee who otherwise was excellent would have made City let the game play a little more – how-

ever it’s a tactic that worked so full credit to them. City’s second goal was probably always coming as we didn’t have the best defensive night and looked vulnerable to some of the excellent movement from the away sides front players – however it was annoying that both goals seemed preventable, for the second we possibly could have followed City’s lead and deployed a tactical foul in the build up, however we didn’t and after City got in-behind Dylan and cut a ball back to Josh Karika we were dicing with death. Karika’s shot took a deflection as it squirmed through our defenders – Jason got a decent chunk of the ball and tried to push it away, but Leo Berlim was on hand once more to pop home the loose ball and seal City’s first win of the season. We did have chances in the second half, including one very good one to Art Twigg after some excellent build up play, and the game finished up with sub Joe Junge racing onto a through ball – but he was unable to keep his chip over the advancing City keeper down enough to sneak into the goal. This weekend we have a massive double header as we face up against the Red and Black striped side* on Friday before returning home to face up against the West Auckland based Red and Yellow side* on Monday. (*based on Martin Crowe’s strategy in the 1992 World Cup which took the name of a team away and all the records and history and just focused on his own teams performance and strengths). With poor weather during the week effecting training (yes even turf’s get flooded) the preparation for this game was not at the level we achieved last week, however we can sympathise with other teams with lesser facilities and how much of a challenge last week would have been for them. Also to add to the disruption for this game there was quite a lot of player movement – this is something that Reserves teams need to get used to though and Ben Fletcher and his team are something in the realms of experts in this area. Regular skipper Mike Glenny was called into First Team cover so midfield stalwart Monju took over the armband while Stefan slipped into Mike’s CB role. The other change saw Ricky Barbosa promoted to the First Team bench as well as cover for Luca who was resting a tight hamstring. This meant there were opportunities for Prethip to grab his first start, also Karar picked his first starting role as well. Didi came into the team for the first time this season to replace the sick Rowan Corbett who is set to spend a fair amount of time on the sideline with his illness. Lastly we welcomed back John Murphy who had a slight pull last week. It would be fair to say that the Reserves dominated large parts of the game – and if you check out the stats below it will show the entire first half possession was weighed in favour of the home side – mistakes however were proving to be an issue with Manukau’s First half goal coming from an error in possession. On attack Manukau played the same high line their first team did in the later game, which proved tricky for our younger more enthusiastic players who were caught offside a lot – this made us frustrated and we conceded a lot more fouls than we needed to and consequently we ended up with a few bookings which is never good. After halftime we continued to press on and we were rewarded with a tidy finish at the back post by Conrad Benefield who has really come back this year with some fire in his belly after a year playing Rugby. That goal gave us some belief and although we suffered a big blow shortly after that with a bad injury to Prethip (wishing you all the best mate!) we boxed on and captain Monju found the winner as he curled a corner straight into the goal.

Maybe not vintage football from the reserves in possession but out of possession we restricted the visitors to only 4 shots all game and 1 corner – If we had been able to reduce the amount of possession we turned over with free kicks then I think we would have been able to really choke the life out of the game. Big challenge for the reserves this coming weekend against two sides which Mr T Able suggests should be beaten but we have seen across the squad that we have a slight tendency to drop our performance levels due to complacency so it’s important we treat both sides with the respect they deserve and start hard and fast like any other game.
