Welcome to Michaels Ave for another round of Lotto NRFL action Round Seven of the Lotto NRFL Div 1 sees Rudy and his Bucklands Beach team come to Ellerslie for the first ever meeting between these two teams at First Team level (according to my research on the excellent Ultimate NZ Soccer Website – cheers JR). Bucklands Beach who were formed in 1976 and are only in their 4th ever season of NRFL (1989 and 1993 Div 4, 2018 Div 2) won promotion into Div 1 last season after finishing runners up (but 14 points clear of 3rd) behind Takapuna – however it’s Bucklands Beach in 2019 who have hit the ground running with 4 wins from 6 games and 3rd place in the league, they will prove a tough test for us today. A special welcome to former Ellerslie players Ben and Dan Culpan, Sohail Basha and Aus Shabbot – good to see you guys again! The challenge for the Ellerslie lads today is to try and get something out of this game and the next couple to make sure our decent start to the season is not for naught, so points from this game and then a win in the cup away against Ngaruawahia on the 11th will give the guys a real confidence boost. CONGRATS Art Twigg grabbed his 50th First Team appearance of the season when he started against Fencibles in round 4 – congrats Art! We have already had 4 debutants in the first team this season as players were promoted up from Reserves– our latest is Kyryl Bolharyn who played in goal against Waiheke! In the Reserves congrats goes to a bunch of the U17’s lads who stepped up and helped the Reserves over the Easter and ANZAC periods – great to see our pathways still working.

FROM THE DUGOUT Good afternoon everyone. Today we welcome Bucklands Beach to Michaels Ave for another local derby. As we did with Takapuna last week, I would like to congratulate Bucklands Beach on their promotion to NRFL Division 1 in 2018 and wish them all the best for the season. We were disappointed with our results in the double round of matches last week and we will be looking for an improved performance today. Having controlled possession for parts of the game against Takapuna and creating a number of decent opportunities we needed a last minute goal to secure a draw. Against Waiheke our first half performance was not at the level required in this league. We improved after half time but couldn’t get the goal required to put Waiheke under pressure and eventually lost the match 2-0. Today we are expecting a tough match from Rudy and his team. Bucklands Beach have started the season very well and I am sure they are an improved team from the one we drew with in pre-season. I hope both teams can put on an entertaining match for the spectators. Fred de Jong

2019 NRFL DIV ONE

WAIHEKE UTD VS ELLERSLIE AFC Ellerslie’s Men’s First Team played two games between Thursday (ANZAC Day) and Saturday, taking on Takapuna (at home) and Waiheke (away), with only a solitary point tucked away from those two games. Both games saw Ellerslie play well enough to get points but poor execution in key areas was the theme of both games, a bit of fatigue also played it’s part during the 2nd game which was to be expected. The two games couldn’t have been more chalk and cheese in terms of game style with Takapuna operating a more traditional English style with the midfield being bypassed at times and getting the ball forward to their dangerous front three – who scored freely last season in the 2nd Division. Waiheke on the other hand – preferred a more deliberate build-up with plenty of passing and movement from their midfield, focussing on getting the ball to their dangerous wide players and overloading our fullbacks for crossing or cutting in towards goal opportunities. Against Takapuna the first half was devoid of anything overly exciting with both sides having the aforementioned half chances but nothing that really tested the respective keepers – however the second half held more punch and Rowan had a few opportunities to see how good the Taka keeper was but again the desired connection wasn’t there. Div was from memory the first keeper called on to make a save and it was an excellent one as he got down to a low powerful sh ot through a crowd of players and palmed the ball around the post, however not long afterwards Taka opened the scoring from a corner routine which saw the ball delivered to the top of the box for a player to volley into a crowded 6 yard box and a Taka player popped the loose ball home with his head. That spurned us on and we went chasing for an equaliser and as the time ran out Seb Poelman went forward to apply some more pressure on Taka – however it was new player Patrick who won an important header and flicked the ball forward – which both Seb and Rowan pressed. The Taka GK and defender both left the ball for each other and Rowan raced inbetween them and picked off the ball and slotted the ball into the empty net t o level the game. On Saturday against Waiheke the early play was pretty even with Ellerslie having a great opportunity with Rowan as he had a c lear chance at goal with only the keeper to beat, but he scuffed his shot and the Waiheke keeper dived on the ball to make the save. Waiheke took the lead in the first half though as they reacted first to a scrappy loose ball after a corner and a low hard sh ot from close range gave Kyryl in goal (on debut) no chance – it’s at this point I must mention I was very disappointed with the performance of the referee, particularly at set piece time as he let the

Waiheke players push and pull and hold players all over the place. Waiheke are one of those teams that if you give them the lead they play like they have an extra man on the park – however had we been able to deny them this lead I think we had enough ability to chip away at them and win the contest. Halftime came and went with Fred and Terry making some small adjustments to the team and urging the lads to show a bit more f ight as the Waiheke guys were into everything. In the second half I thought we actually played some nice stuff, there was periods of patient buildup and some nice interchan ges in midfield and defensively I thought we were improved in the second half. A quite miraculous chance came in the second half as a cross was dinked in from the right by Jordan Bresler and Rowan Corbett met it with a side foot, side volley which beautifully looped over the GK and smacked into the top of the cross bar, and the Waiheke GK plucked the ball un der some pressure out of the air to kill the rebound – a real sign that we were getting back into the contest. We made some subs which saw Adam Scott make his first appearance of the season – as we had been chasing the equalising goal and pushed players up to support the attack we were more susceptible to counter attacks, and then came the sucker punch and it was one of those counte rs which sealed the game – unfortunately as I suspected live, the player who got the ball on the right hand side of the field, and turned our only defender who had been able to come over and cover inside out before scoring was offside – but not flagged as such. We didn’t give up and continued to push on for an way back into the game and we thought we had it when we won a corner and as the ball was coming into the crowded box a Waiheke player with two hands pushed Josh Torrens into the goal, right infront of the referee – however the referee decided this was acceptable and play wasn’t stopped – other than for the GK as one of the other players who ironically was standing where Josh would have been headed over under pressure.

All things considered it was hard to begrudge Waiheke the win as they showed superior finishing ability but it’s hard not to feel aggrieved when foul play is largely left unchecked by the match official, particularly incidents like the above or incidents involving the Waiheke #10 wh o on two separate occasions kicked/ pushed out at an Ellerslie player off the ball and was seen by the match official who didn’t care to intervene. The normal timewasting/acting school that teams of this culture employ was a further frustration in a game where we had not b een that bad for periods of the game but key moments as was the theme of both games we lacked conviction or composure to execute.

BUCKLANDS BEACH FIRST TEAM

WAIHEKE UTD VS ELLERSLIE AFC Seb and Marshy’s young charges picked up a convincing win on Thursday against Takapuna before losing their first game of the season on Saturday to a charged up Waiheke team. Thursday’s game against Takapuna saw a consistent effort from the Reserves as they piled pressure on Takapuna, both with the ball and with our press – a score of 2-0 at halftime after goals to Hazem Al Fayad (his 2nd in 2 games) and skipper for the day Monju Shohei meant we were in control of the game and looking to see if we could build on the score. Two further goals in the 2nd half, both to Shukrullah Rezaie (the 2nd one a very nice finish) sealed the points and a pleasing performance. Saturday was a little bit of a different story as Waiheke put out probably the oldest overall team we have played this season with their full 5 overage players including one player who had turned 23 this year. That meant the game had a physical nature to it and being our 2nd game in three days for a light squad at the moment took it’s toll.

That combined with the fact we were maybe a little complacent heading into the game with the home side on zero points and with Divikesh sick and Kyryl on first team duty, it meant Grant Marshall reprised his sweeper keeper role from last season. A mistake playing out from the back gave Waiheke the opportunity to open the scoring but Ellerslie drew level after being awarded a penalty which was expertly dispatched by skipper for the day Adam Scott who is running into some rich form. Waiheke’s pressure however paid off and they got a 2nd goal late into the 2nd half and try as we might we just couldn’t find the x-factor or finish in front of goal to drew level – not for lack of chances however. A first loss of the season and a few things for the coaching staff to work on with the group at training this week.
