THE AVE
ISSUE 4 Ellerslie vs North Shore 29.04.17
2
Welcome to another big weekend of football at Michaels Ave - firstly let me welcome Tom Speers and his North Shore team to Michaels Ave, it seems like Tom has breathed a bit of belief into the Devonport based club, and we have seen some promising results from them so far this season. Both the First Team game and the reserves game should be interesting games for varying reasons. We do have an exciting announcement as well - this weekend marks the first occasion since the 2013 season that all the fields at Michaels Ave have been open and ready for play - unfortunately the #3 field was only opened at the last moment so we have not been able to get all the fields to capacity for this weekend, but that will come. You may also notice around the lower fields the work has started on the training floodlights, work that has been scheduled to be completed by the middle of the season. These lights will give us the extra training capacity we so desperately require, and while it’s been a long time coming we are excited to use them later in the season. On a slightly sour note we have a mini-protest going on at Michaels Ave as one neighbour has embarked on a crusade to smear the reputation of the turf by claiming it causes cancer. The article he refers to has since been disproved in the states and holds absolutely no relevance to our turf, which has been emission’s tested in both air quality and water quality and passed with flying colours. It seems the neighbour in question has some other motives in mind with this ploy and we encourage anyone who wants to find out more about the turf to contact Auckland City council. Also please avoid any confrontation with this neighbour, he has video camera’s and guards watching his signs, so just steer clear of him and his propaganda. Juniors football starts again this weekend so parking at Michaels Ave will be at a premium so we recommend car pooling or parking on neighbouring streets to avoid adding to the congestion at the Reserve. The club is fully back up and running as well with hot food, cold drinks and Sport on the big screen - please encourage your teammates to come up and support the club and don’t forget to invite your opposition as well. Last Word: We are still on the hunt for some sponsors so please if you have a small business that needs some exposure we can get your name out to over 1400 club members via our website and club app - get in touch and see how we can help each other. Cheers Tim Adams Senior Club Chairman ELLERSLIE AFC

Ellerslie AFC vs North Shore United 5pm @ Michaels Ave Reserve Basing these games by looking at the league table can sometimes be very confusing. Results for both teams over Anzac weekend were far from ideal, however Shore have clearly made the better start to the season therefore come in to the game as favourites Prediction. Going for a high scoring draw. Manukau City vs Franklin United 3pm @ Walter Massey Park Franklin can't buy a trick at the moment with large defeats against good teams in the past couple of weeks. City have had an impressive run of late and look solid under Kevin Fallon. Their discipline which has been their Achilles heel in previous seasons has been all sorted it seems. Prediction. City in our lock of the week. Mount Albert Ponsonby vs Western Springs 3pm @ Anderson Park Springs were impressive last weekend as they notched up an massive 16 goals which is more than any team has scored all season bar the top 4. MAP have had a slow start to the season but are looking better now. Prediction. Springs to be pushed but will get there in the end. Tauranga City vs Waitemata FC 3pm @ Links Ave Normally I would lean towards the home side as travel takes a lot of out of teams – however after a result like last week who would know what kind of performance Tauranga City are going to come up with. Both teams can be solid on their day so it’s a tough one to pick Prediction. 0-0 Draw, Tauranga will play plenty behind the ball. Oratia United vs Melville United 3pm @ Parrs Park Best in the West vs Pride of the Waikato – it’s the battle of the slogans! Tia have really surprised recently with some impressive results, early in the season it looked like they were in some trouble. Melville started with a hiss and a roar (particularly on social media) and backed it up on the field before a little speed bump before they turned into top gear over the Anzac period. Prediction. Can’t go past Melville to be fair. Hibiscus Coast vs Metro FC 3pm @ Stanmore Bay Park Looking at the league table and reading Metro’s twitter page updating us on their growing injury toll might just be enough evidence to pick this game in the favour of the coasters – Hibiscus for their part have been on the improve so it would be fitting for them to keep the improvement up in this fixture. Prediction. Metro have a lot of character but Coast too potent upfront to lose this

NORTH SHORE UNITED
It was as tough of an Anzac weekend as you could have manufactured, with games against both of the league favourites and both away to boot. Luckily our second away game was just over the other side of Auckland instead of somewhere like Hibiscus - now that would have been just a little crazy. We don't really have much time to reflect on the two games as we have another tough challenge in the shape of North Shore who have been a bit of a dark horse this season and have looked (especially early on) every bit as good as Melville and Springs. So let's quickly wrap up the games - Saturday we visited Gower Park, home of Melville United - their ground is proper amazing, with a hedge surrounded field (I love hedges around football grounds), several grandstands, two tier player dugouts (flash!) and probably one of the nicest surfaces you will ever play on... I shit you not! So with that all taken into consideration it was a little disappointing that we didn't compete for long enough against the "Pride of the Waikato" - we did at times look like we were building up something important but we often at that point made an error and gave the ball up to kill any momentum we may have built. I watched the highlights package (kindly supplied by Melville - link below at the bottom of this report) and that confirmed my thoughts as I watched us switch from a team competing well to a team being cut open seemingly at will, with only some very passionate and desperate cover defence and excellent keeping kept the score down. It came as a massive shock to me then to see the stats say we had 58% possession, surely that's a mistake? What if it's not? That's possibly even worse!! No but seriously we failed to compete with the men from Melville at an acceptable level, yes they were a great team (yes great, not just good) but we made them look a bit better than they were as we dropped our heads and that's something we can learn from with some younger players in our side.
16
So moving onto Western Springs on ANZAC day proper at Seddon Fields in the shadows of war planes at MOTAT II it seemed a fitting location. Maybe a bit of a shock in Melville fixture or the lack of travelling or the fact we were on turf were all factors in our vastly improved performance against the hoops the reality was the end result wasn't vastly different from Saturday's game but the performance was almost chalk and cheese. Good teams like Springs and Melville probably normally operate on a 70-30 or 80-20 ratio of good vs mistakes - against Melville we were probably at 50-50 or possibly even lower, but against Springs we were probably in the realm of 60-40 and we chased and harried every one of those 40% of mistakes trying to turn it back into our ball - It was a shame we couldn't turn that epic effort on the field into more goals or god forbid a point or 3 but Springs were another quality side when the final whistle went they looked genuinely shattered and relived in equal parts.
There were two periods when they looked a little concerned which was ironically just before their 1st and 3rd goals - so potentially we need to have a look at that, as building pressure on teams is important in this league as a lot of teams can't handle it and can cough up possession and goals. A highlight of the game was definitely Dylan's long range goal to bring the score back to 2-1, not a bad way for the 17 year old defender cum midfielder to grab his first goal in NRFL football, infact he had two pretty decent games over the long weekend and particularly in this game really stepped up and well deserved his M.O.M. award. Pushing him hard was Jason who again made 3 or 4 clutch saves - it would be easy to just expect this from Jason every week such is his ability but when we work as hard as we did across the squad this weekend it's important when things go a little wrong to have one of the best keepers in the league behind us. All the best to Western Springs as they hunt for league title glory and of course promotion back to the Premier League at the end of the 2017 season. NORTH SHORE RESERVES
Jekyll and Hyde score lines secondary to 6 pointer weekend Two vastly different games over the ANZAC weekend for the still perfect reserves, but no-one would have cared how the games played out as 6 points were delivered from the pitch to the league table. Digging deeper though and you will find the reserves are adept to playing different styles of football to suit the pitch conditions and the strengths of the opposition – nothing pointed more to this fact than the game on Saturday away in Melville against the then league leaders. Travel always plays a factor in these games, so it was impressive to see the Reserves put in an excellent defensive performance on a good grass pitch (slightly heavy but in good nick) against a Reserves side that looked really sharp in the warmup and in patches in the game. No-one would have been happier than the two men either end of the park as Joe up top nicked the winning goal with some clever footwork on a loose ball from a corner and Lloyd at the other end who picked up a clean sheet, something that had alluded him the last two games to his frustration. A Debut for young Jack Rathbone at the end as well was a highlight as he becomes the 2nd Rathbone to play NRFL for Ellerslie (and probably not the last). Lastly it was a day to remember for Reserves skipper Mike Glenny who celebrated his 26th Birthday – I personally still remember him playing midgets in 5th grade with my brother as a tearaway striker – not sure what happened there! Tuesday then saw us take on Western Springs at 2:30 on Anzac Day – the sun was a bit of an issue throughout the game but it didn’t seem to effect the attacking attitude both teams brought to the game with Ellerslie seemingly holding all the cards at halftime with a 4-0 lead thanks to a 6 minute period where the floodgates opened. Monju who had Saturday off opened the scoring after a wonderful ball forward by Josh Torrens found Tavis on the right who cut it back for Monju (who was standing in as skipper for Glenny who was unavailable) slotted it home. Fredrik was next on the scoresheet as he slammed home a volley from close distance after Springs had failed to deal with a corner. That spurred Alex into action and he grabbed an excellent goal as he bullied a defender before cutting back and slamming the ball high past the stranded goalkeeper for our third. He added his second just 2 minutes later from the penalty spot after John had been brought down inside the box – Alex showing no nerves slammed the shot home to seal the half.

At halftime we made a few changes but so did Springs and to their credit we struggled to deal with them in the second half – some players after the game didn’t even realise Springs had changed to a back three so definitely some game awareness to be worked on there from Coach Fletcher.
Springs nicked a goal back in the 55th minute from a penalty spot after a handball which seemed to upset the Ellerslie side, it was too far away from me and the video to tell if it was a harsh call but Springs were not going to give up this gift and their first goal was on the board. That spurned us on a little and we found our 5th goal just 4 minutes later as John Murphy scored his 3rd goal in his last 4 games with a wicked free kick that flew into the top right corner of the goal, much to the enjoyment of Jordan Oosterhof who clapped and celebrated wildly on the side-line. Disappointingly at that point we switched off a little and let Springs score two further goals, including one pretty decent longer range one – the toll of so many games in such a short space of time maybe had wore down mentally more than anything else on the side, so it’s important to come into the game against Shore who will be another challenge fresh and driven to keep going.
