Welcome to another match day here at “The Ave” – this is no ordinary match though as we make no apology about making this programme and this match day all about awareness of Mental Health. It’s a topic close to our hearts here at Ellerslie AFC I’m sure close to a lot of people here at Michaels Ave today or reading this programme from afar – Particularly we want to focus on young Men and Women and their mental health and the shockingly high youth suicide rates – our message is simple, check on your mates, ask them if they are ok – you could help save someone! More on this topic later in the program!
Tonight’s main game see’s Fencibles visit Michaels Ave in the #battleofthepanmurebridge for the first time in quite some time, so welcome to Neil and his team and in particular Freddie Ljungberg who is a club legend at Michaels Ave and Christian Niyonsaba who spent a season here as well a little while back. We also hope to see a few of the KB’s and #Hutchy’s mates join us for this game – although an official catch up for them to celebrate their mate will be scheduled at a later date. In terms of the game Fencibles come into this fixture in what can only be described as red hot form, and sit nice and high on the table while Ellerslie have scrapped and fought without much reward for 5 points, which is good enough for 9th on the table. It would be a bit cliché to say our performances don’t reflect our standings but well that’s true but saying it won’t get us more points so Fred, Terry and the team are battening down the hatches and working hard to convert our performances into points. In the Reserves fixture Ellerslie who have had a Jekyll and Hyde performance to the first third of their season come up against a Fencies side who have a perfect record so far with a whopping 32 goals scored in their 7 games and only 4 conceded. So a big match for Ian and Grant and their team. On the Women’s side Ryan and his Women’s First Team have bounced back from two losses to win their last two games (each one 4-3) to sit themselves in midtable (it’s a small table to be fair) and with a key game this weekend against unbeaten Norwest – a key game!
The Women’s Reserves league is frankly a bit of a mess and four weeks in they have played twice and due to some player unavailability they have lost both – however the break has seen recruitment kick in and with a full team available (hopefully) the reserves head to Mangere Mountain to take on league newcomers Onehunga Mangere. There are plenty of other games on this weekend as well – check out the club fixtures later on in this programme for more details. So please feel free to join us in our campaign for Mental Health Awareness – either by coming to the game at 6pm on Saturday and making a donation or by donating directly to the Mental Health Foundation of NZ (link later on in this document) or by simply checking on your mates and using this hashtag on your social media feeds #checkonyourmates Cheers Tim Adams Club Chairman - ELLERSLIE AFC

Right the NRFL Predictor is back after a couple of weeks hiatus and we have a full round of NRFL games ahead of next weekends Chatham Cup round, so let's get started: Manurewa AFC vs North Shore Utd Memorial Park @ 3pm Rewa in last place host North Shore who sit in 5th place - the home side do have two games in hand which are scheduled midweek over the next couple of weeks but will want to start picking up some points after a rough start to the season. North Shore have done a bit of a rebuild on their side and look to be in the running again for a top 4/promotion spot and they pushed surprise package Fencibles all the way last week. PREDICTION: Shore by 2 Waiheke Utd vs Melville Utd Onetangi Hill @ 3pm Battle of the Red United sides will see Melville travel to the island for their first visit for quite some time - it's no simple trip for the Hamilton side, infact so much so that they are declining to send a reserves side due to a clash with a Waikato Secondary schools tournament. Waiheke have some impressive names on paper and also boast former Melville scoring machine Marc Evans who also showed a turn of pace sprinting for the ferry from the Ellerslie bus last Saturday. PREDICTION: Score Draw Waitemata FC vs Mt Albert Ponsonby AFC McLeod Park @ 3pm Mata FC are another club who have struggled for points early doors and they host MAP who have seen club legend Robbie Graham move to local neighbours Metro in recent weeks to be placed by the returnig Mac Waite who spent the summer playing for Hawkes Bay Utd. This could turn into a battle quickly as both teams compete for everything but a moment of quality can turn the contest. PREDICTION: MAP 1-0 Forrest Hill Milford vs Tauranga City Becroft Park @ 3pm Life in Div 1 hasn't been too bad for relegated FHM who have scored freely but have a looked a little dicey at the back, Tauranga on the other hand have plodded along picking up on average a point a game and will want to keep that form up at minimum to avoid getting dragged into the relegation fight. They are also super dangerous on set pieces with the twin towers of Sam O'Regan and Raymond How causing all sorts of problems. PREDICTION: FHM 4-3
Hibiscus Coast vs Oratia Utd Stanmore Bay @ 3pm The teams in green battle it out at everyone's favourite away ground, Coast will def be the happier of the two sides with their first 7 games as they sit comfortable in midtable while Oratia struggle down at the foot of the table, they do however possess the dangerous Mark Withers in their team so clutch goals won't be far away. PREDICTION: Coast by 2

The next step on the path to glory in the ISPS Handa Chatham Cup has been revealed after the official draw for round one was conducted at New Zealand Football headquarters this afternoon. One of the oldest competitions in New Zealand sport, the 91st edition of the Chatham Cup kicked off with the preliminary round last month with 26 teams putting their names in the hat for the first round proper. They were joined by many other sides who had byes through the preliminary round in today’s draw, which resulted in 47 match-ups across the country.
For Ellerslie we are involved in two fixtures, that being our own game against Te Awamutu who ISPS Handa Chatham Cup Round One Saturday 12 May

Ellerslie have drawn a BYE in the first round of the newly branded Kate Sheppard Cup which is proudly supported by the NZ Football Foundation. All Northern region teams drew a bye in fact as NZF plays round one in the Central and Southern regions to get the right number of teams for the next round. Ellerslie have a proud history in this cup with a handful of finals appearances in the early 2000’s with one victory to our name. Recently we have pushed Premier League teams close but have not been able to knock off a big fish, maybe 2018 is our year?
“The Kate Sheppard Cup provides a domestic outlet for our country’s top female players with a number of recent champions well served by players who have represented their country at either age group or senior Football Ferns level.”
New Zealand Football Director of Competitions and Events Daniel Farrow

More than a Game This Saturday evening the Ellerslie Men’s First Team host local rivals Fencibles United in Lotto NRFL Div 1 action, there is a lot at stake in this match as Ellerslie struggle for points and Fencibles who are newly promoted into this division and flying high and wanting to keep up their momentum – however all of that is secondary to the main theme of this match – the promotion of Awareness of Mental Health!
Mental Health NZ Foundation do a great job helping people with problems and getting people to be aware of how to spot people who are struggling – particularly in the category of young males where there is a frighteningly high suicide rate. We have been effected by this recently as one of the main characters of Ellerslie AFC took his own life after struggling with mental health issues, and I’m sure unfortunately that most people reading this have their own sad story or close call. We want to make a difference in this space and we believe through the power of team sport we can make a positive difference about the awareness of young people’s mental health – Saturday night before, during and after the game we will be collecting gold coin donations for Mental Health NZ, so please come down and watch some footy and donate to what is an excellent cause and one that is close to our hearts. If you can’t make it to the game but you still want to contribute you can, in one of two ways:
you can make an online donation to Mental Health NZ by following this link:https://events.mentalhealth.org.nz/donate
you can reach out and check on the welfare of your mates, ask them how they are – you never know who might need your help.
We also ask in the days leading up to the game you add the following hashtag to your social media posts – #checkonyourmates – let’s get it trending, you never know that alone might help save someone! This will be our second Mental Health Awareness match – our last match against Tauranga City in our first game of the 2017 NRFL Div 1 season saw us raise just over $500 for the foundation and we want to better that this time! Women’s Conference Round-up Northland FC 0, Central United 3 Onehunga Sports 3,Ellerslie AFC 4 Norwest Utd 1, Fencibles 0 Hibiscus Coast 3, Manukau Utd 0 In a week when we officially lost another team from the league as Lynn Avon folded we saw some interesting results as previously unbeaten Fencibles lost to Norwest and Northland who are always tough at home beaten by Central who have bounced back after a tough start to the season. There is no result in the system for Coast vs Manukau but some social media posts seem to suggest a default win for the coasters. For Ellerslie another epic battle against neighbors Onehunga Sports—apparently these two teams don’t know any other way! Last years mirror fixture was exactly the same score and winner. This result leaves Ellerslie with a 50% record after a tough start and a bunch of goals in every game so far so excitement guaranteed in Ellerslie games! Unbeaten Norwest will pose a tough challenge for the team this weekend, but they are up for it and it should be a good game!
