WELCOME TO THE AVE
TODAYS MATCH OFFICIALS First Team Referee: Derek DOW Reserves Referee: TBC
FROM THE DUGOUT Welcome to the first Women’s Conference match of the month of May for Ellerslie as they take on Manukau United. To date Ellerslie has won 3 of their first 3 matches, scoring 12 goals and conceding just 1. Manukau enter the match having one of each of the results through their first three games. Having only conceded 4 goals through 3 games, they seem like they may be tough to break down and get opportunities against. Should provide for a very interesting match! It is still very early days, but with Manukau sitting in 4th and Ellerslie on top of the table, this will be a very important match for both teams. The Ellerslie coaches are happy with the performance of the team through the first three games and feel confident in their team’s abilities to continue to stick to the game plan on both sides of the ball. The team has spent a lot of time on both sides of the ball this week with Coach Ian and Callum working hard to sure up the back four while Coach Brendon and Ryan have been working to improve the firepower the team has upfront. Hopefully you will see the culmination of that hard work from players and coaches in the match today. Have fun, Ryan Shiffman

ELLERSLIE VS EASTERN SUBURBS Round 3 of the 2019 AFF/NFF Women’s Conference league saw Ellerslie host neighbours Eastern Suburbs at 3pm at Michaels Ave on the 28th of April. Both teams had missed last week due to Easter and were keen to get back into action, and a decent crowd witnessed a high tempo opening to the game from both sides – a benchmark for the rest of the fixture.
Holly and Leigh continued their partnership upfront and every game it looks more polished as they improve their teamwork in and out of position. It was however the team press led by Leigh which ironically caused Suburbs a great deal of concern early in this contest – I say ironically as this Suburbs team (like so many others) are now disciples of the Ole style of play – which includes a lot of possession (share) and pressing (shiver). However in the first half and particularly the opening 15-20 mins the home sides press and great work in possession starved the Lilywhites of the ball. Our opening goal came from Shannon Hunter after she followed in a shot which the Suburbs keeper saved but could do nothing as Shannon drove home the loose ball – further
goals to Anita, a wonderful long range free kick and Leigh, a well worked team move, settled the contest before Kez with her 3rd goal in as many games grabbed our 4thas she followed up after the GK had denied Anita a second. In the second half Suburbs kept the ball much better and managed to build some pressure but were unable to stop us on a well-executed counter attack which started on our right side and transitioned across to our left for Maggie to grab our 5th with a nice curling effort back across the keeper. That 5th goal stung Suburbs and they literally kicked off and created an attacking opportunity and pulled one back with a great top corner strike from inside the box – but that was the scoring done for the match although both sides continued to have chances, the GK’s stood up and showed their value. So another 3 points in the bag as we head into a tough challenge this weekend against the unknown quantity of Manukau United – 3pm at Michaels Ave on Sunday – see you all there!

MANUKAU FIRST TEAM
FROM THE DUGOUT The Reserves had the exciting Ellerslie derby (first of three this season) and both teams played some exciting football at times and even the epic downpour during the game couldn't dampen the teams spirits. Lyric who covered a lot of ground over the course of the game opened the scoring early on as she converted a cross from Maggie on the far post despite the Rebels GK best efforts to come across and deny the goal. Pippa Carr grabbed our 2nd goal when she cleaned up around the penalty spot after Maggie sped down the right wing and drove into the box and then cut the ball back to Lyric whose shot was blocked and Pippa who was jogging on the spot smashed the ball home. Our third goal came when Lyric broke down our right hand side and got around the back of the defence and slid the ball to Captain Flo who with her trusty right foot slammed the ball home from just inside the box - a very nice strike.
Halftime came and so did the rain - some very wet players from both teams! The second half the Rebels came out and apart from the one further goal we scored they did really well to close down space and deny opportunities, and that's not always easy when your down but they gave it a crack and was it not for some switched on defending and goal keeping they could have found a way back into the game. The Reserves 4th goal was again provided by Lyric who raced onto a great ball into space by Pippa and managed to drive into the box and deliver a quality cross to the far post where Wentao was waiting and applied an expert finish with her left foot - a very nice goal. That result means it's also 3 from 3 for the Reserves and another home game next week as they take on Bay Olympic at Michaels Ave at 1pm - good luck ladies.
