Welcome to another issue of the almost awarding winning match day program for Ellerslie AFC, simply called “The Ave”. This weekend we welcome Scott McKay and his Mt Albert Team to Michaels Ave for Lotto NRFL Div 1 action – Scott has his team coming right just like last season when they scored their first goal and first win of the season against us (we are so charitable), this season they have started much better and are well placed to make a mid-season run at the promotion spot that was so cruelly taken away from them by a combination of Papakura and Manurewa. However knowing Scott he will be pushing his players to make sure this season is in their own hands and they will be concentrating on the next job each week as they search for maximum points. For Ellerslie this will be a tough game against a hardworking MAP team – but we have the quality and we had good numbers at training this week so we have the group focused on what needs to be done, I have the feeling that as long as we keep our work rate up that at some point we will click and really cause someone some problems, just keep on working at training and working with your coaches and teammates to improve our 1%ers, that is the key! Opening up before the First Team game will be another big game for the Reserves – they will be fired up against a MAP team that caused us a few issues last season after losing their perfect record last weekend – Ben has his boys ticking along nicely, but they need to keep working just like the first team for their ultimate goal of winning the league and/or getting a first team spot. Another welcome this week goes to our newest team who joined last week and have their first game this weekend against Dury away – so welcome to Cormac and his team McMahonMcFace FC as they take a spot in AFF Div 7. Sunday we have two women’s games at Michaels Ave as our Women’s Champs team take on Western Springs who sit top of the table and one of our women’s community teams (the Red Comets) take on Bucklands Beach on Michaels Ave 2. You may notice that around the lower field the work on the floodlights has commenced which is exciting – when they are finished stage 1 we will have a bit of extra training capacity on those lower fields which will be nice. Just on that please everyone who is scheduled to play this weekend on the grass fields down the bottom (this includes the kids and parents) please take care to not warm up on the field and please keep all foot traffic off the grounds so they can be in as good a nick as possible come middle of winter. On that note don’t forget jackets, beanies, hoodies etc are all available for sale on the club webshop – just jump on our website www.ellersliefootball.org.nz and click on Webshop and your away laughing! LAST WORD: If your around the club from 12:30pm on Sunday come up to the clubrooms as we will have the 2nd leg of the OFC Champions League Final on the big screen as Team Wellington try and claw back a 3-0 loss to Auckland City in the First Leg – could be exciting football on show. Cheers Tim Adams Senior Club Chairman - ELLERSLIE AFC

The NRFL Preview is back and we have a full round of games to look at, including an early season relegation battle between Metro FC and Franklin while the top 4 are all theoretically playing games they should win.... Added bonus this week as we try and come up with a unique name for each game - some of them may be average.... METRO FC vs FRANKLIN UTD (The Missing Derby) Phyllis Street @ 3pm Both teams come into this game probably thinking what have we done to deserve this - by all accounts both sides built strong teams this season but have both been undone by player injuries, or suspenions or just players not being available. A look at the league table tells a story of a hard season so far, but different paths by each team with Metro not being as free scoring as Franklin but also not being quite so leaky at the back either.. So what does all of this mean for this game? PREDICTION: Going for a draw - can't decide if it will be a highscoring 3-3 or a tense 0-0
ELLERSLIE AFC vs MT ALBERT PONSONBY (Veteran Keeper Derby) 3pm @ Michaels Ave Reserve I struggled with a name for this game - the only thing I could come up with was how great it would be to see Jason and Robbie faceoff against each other - this may not happen but if it did it would be something to behold. Important game for both sides as MAP sit top of a mid table mini-league and we sit bottom - however a win for the home team will see them draw level with MAP. MAP on the other hand after narrowly missing out on promotion last season will be keen to try and stay with the top 4 and points here will be crucial. PREDICTION: Ellerslie struggling at the moment when they go behind - an early goal for MAP might be enough - but the longer Ellerslie stay in the game the more dangerous they will be. ORATIA UTD vs WESTERN SPRINGS AFC (West vs Real West) 3pm @ Parrs Park Tia as the westmost club in NRFL Div 1 face table topping Western Springs who ironically are probably the most central club in the entire league - Early season it looked like Steve Cain's side were going to be in some trouble but some awesome wins has pulled them into this middle group of teams, however a challenge lays infront of them in a slick Western Springs side who have seen off all challengers thus far including all of the other teams in the top four - however a narrow 1-0 win over neighours MAP last weekend showed they can't be on their game all of the time! PREDICTION: Bit of a clash in style as we hear Tia are quite direct while Springs have a nice build up approach - can't see the fake West losing this one. HIBISCUS COAST AFC vs MELVILLE UTD (Top Grounds Derby) 3pm @ Stanmore Bay The 2nd longest trip in NRFL Div 1 this season as Melville go from pretty hedges and man made beauty to one of the most naturally beautiful grounds in all of the AFF/NFF/WAIBOP area - highly recommended to have a swim afterwards and a curry just up the road! Anyway both sides have pressure on to keep ticking over points, Melville after a couple of speed bumps against Shore and Springs but hit top gear in a big way after that to be the side with the best for and against record - Coast however have showed they are no pushovers either so could be an interesting little battle. PREDICTION: Melville to win and keep pressure on Springs. MANUKAU CITY vs WAITEMATA FC (Battle of the Surprise Packages) 3pm @ Walter Massey Park It's probably a litle unfair to label Manukau as a surprise package as I think everyone thought they would be a very handy side this season, but the surprise has been how they have done so well without their star from last season and from what i hear they have not had Hone for many games either. Waitemata on the other hand were written off before a ball was kicked by everyone, with all their stars joining Melville and their best recruit being Prince - things didn't look good. However Bob Sova has done a great job and for the moment they sit pretty in the middle of the pack. PREDICTION: City for the win although they did lose a major part of their defensive unit in their last game but still too well coached for me.
10
TAURANGA CITY UTD vs NORTH SHORE UTD (Battle of the Beaches) 3pm @ Links Ave (Sun) Both sides reside in locations not far from amazing beaches but expect the battle Tauranga to put up against skillful Shore side to be more like a war than a relaxing break on the beach. There is something about Tauranga at home on a Sunday which makes them tricky (as a few sides have found out this year). Shore clearly have the league table dominance and the form but I could see an upset here. PREDICTION: I don't think Shore will lose all three points but if there is to be an upset this round this is it.

Shore triple consigns home side to third loss on the bounce After watching the reserves lose their unbeaten start to the season and after putting out a pretty good performance against Springs on Tuesday (despite the scoreline) the lads were fired up for our first home game since the draw against Waitemata. And we did come out and start the game well, we competed with the visiting side as Jordan had the first clear-ish chance of the game as he couldn’t quite get his shot on target as the post came to save the day for Shore. Unfortunately like some other games this season we made an error that coughed up a goal and our heads went down for a little (roughly 4 minutes) which was enough time for Ross Langworthy who scored the first goal to grab his second after cutting in from their left side and beating a few tackles before finishing. Halftime we regrouped and cleaned up a few tactical things before we went out to claw a goal back in the second half – unfortunately Ross wasn’t finished and he grabbed his third with a decent strike from the edge of the area after an excellent run down our left and a cutback. That third goal kicked us into life and we had our best period of the game from about the 50th minute until the end, with several chances to get a goal, 2 or even 3 – unfortunately when confidence is low things just don’t seem to fall for you, that and Shore themselves were determined to keep their clean sheet after a disappointing result last week. Tom Speers urged his team from the sideline to keep working – while the Ellerslie bench kept encouraging our lads to push forward for a goal – unfortunately we couldn’t get the goal we wanted and we are back to the drawing board this week at training as we get back on the pitch and keep working on getting the quality we have throughout the team to shine – we need a 90min performance against MAP and 90 hard minutes and the result will either take care of itself or it won’t but we can have a beer afterwards knowing we left everything (workrate, teamwork, commitment, and respect for each other) on the pitch!
You can do it lads!

Slow Start costs Ressies perfect record A proper winter day at Michaels Ave greeted both teams on Saturday afternoon, with the reserves having a few changes from their previous game with Josh moving to CB in prep for a first team bench spot, Joe came back into the starting side after missing Tuesday, Mike Glenny also came back in after missing the win over Springs. Back from injury was Callum Brown and he was joined by Callum Waters who was picking up some valuable minutes before benching for the first team. So we lined up with Lloyd in goal and Mike Glenny and Callum Brown in the fullback slots with Freddie and Josh in the middle. Conrad, Victor and Callum Waters filled the middle three spots in the park while Joe and John flanked Alex in the front positions. North Shore started the game with a massive fire in their belly’s – they pressed well and while we were not getting cut open by them when they were in possession we really struggled at times to play through them such was their workrate, you could start to see the pressure start to worry the Ellerslie players as passes started being rushed and option taking started looking a little ragged. It was no surprise then when Shore opened the scoring via an error before adding a second only 7 minutes later. This was the first game this season we had conceded 2 goals in the first half and I think only the second time we had gone into the break behind, so it was a little bit of a different halftime talk with players desperate to fix the issues and get back into the game. We battled hard in the second half and while we were dealt a setback with Conrad getting a second yellow we had at that point grabbed a goal back via Alex from the penalty spot – sadly though it just wasn’t our day as Shore played their hearts out and held on for the win to deal us our first defeat. It’s gutting to lose but in terms of a learning experience it’s been interesting to see the reaction from the players at training this week, we have certainly seen a zip from this group as they look to put it all right against MAP this coming weekend.
