Welcome to this special cup edition of “The Ave” as we welcome our fellow Lotto NRFL Div 1 opponents Melville United to Michaels Ave Reserve. Co-Coach’s Sam Wilkinson and Michael Mayne will be eager to top off a good month of results in the league with a cup win and they will fancy this tie after their comfortable win in the league against us over Queen’s Birthday weekend. Melville look to be one of the favourites for the league title with a small group of other teams including Springs and Shore – but their focus today will be making sure they take their first steps in a successful cup campaign. Teams such as Melville need to look no further than last years final when Waitakere City (a Div 1 team at the time) pushed Birkenhead all the way to extra time.
For us it’s a chance to prove ourselves and cause a bit of an upset against one of the leagues form teams – our form has been poor in the last month in terms of results while performances have varied. Form however as followers of the cup will attest to flies out the window in games such as these, the old adage suggests players gain a yard of pace and an inch in height in cup games – so it will be interesting to see if that’s the case with this game. Our Reserves enjoy a weekend off before they resume league action, as you will see later in this issue they have also drawn Melville in their cup (the NRFL Reserves Knockout Cup) and face them at Gower Park on the 5th June. Our Women’s First Team and Reserves also have a weekend off, just in time for mothers day which is ideal – with that in mind we wish all the mothers at Ellerslie AFC a very special mothers day, hopefully the weather holds out for you! There are also a few very special landmarks we have crossed over in the past couple of weeks, we are so lucky to have such a loyal and talented player base – so congrats are in order to the following players for their achievements:
Deborah Tutty – 100 Women’s First Team Appearances Hanna Kelly – 100 Women’s First Team Appearances Anna Howden – 100 Women’s First Team Appearances Andrew Wallace – 50 Men’s First Team Appearances Adam Barkley – 50 Men’s First Team Appearances Callum Brown – 50 Men’s First Team Appearances Callum Waters – 50 Men’s First Team Appearances Great stuff – we will now be listing all our 100 club members in a special page in our matchday program going forward.
LAST WORD: Don’t forget for the easiest access to all things Ellerslie to download the official Ellerslie AFC app (details available on page 14), we have the latest news, direct access to fixtures and lots of other important stuff. Cheers Tim Adams Senior Club Chairman - ELLERSLIE AFC

North Shore vs Metro 2pm @ Allen Hill Stadium These teams have had quite a bit of player movement between them in recent seasons, so there might be some feeling in this game, although Shore have burnt through a few coaches in that time as well so it might just be water under the Harbour Bridge. Allen Hill is such an iconic Chatham Cup venue it would be wrong to pick Shore to lose there! Franklin Utd vs West Hamilton 2pm @ Bledisloe Park Not much travel required for Frankton based West Ham Utd side as they get the south-most possible AFF club to play – Franklin with all their issues at the moment will be welcoming this fixture as a chance to kick start their league campaign. The forums are abound with pointless conjecture about their future, a win here will hold off the doubters for a week or so. Waikato College vs Mt Albert Ponsonby 2pm @ Jansen Park Jansen Park in Hillcrest in the outer suburbs of Hamilton is the venue for this fixture as Lotto NRFL Div 1 team MAP visit as hot favourites. They do seem confident enough to organise a Reserves game for Friday night in Auckland for a mix of Reserves and First Team players who apparently will be surplus for this cup fixture. Cambridge vs Western Springs 2pm @ John Kerkhof The red and white strips of Cambridge host the Green and White hoops of Springs in this cup clash – The Waikato’s second fixture involving a Lotto NRFL Div 1 side. The chances of a home win here are not high but cup-sets happen all the time… you never know. Lynn Avon vs Te Atatu 2pm @ Ken Maunder Think back a number of years and this would have been a one-sided contest between a regular NRFL side and a AFF/NFF conference team – well actually it’s still the same except the roles have been reversed. Should be a decent game though as only 1 division separates the two teams in what will be a local derby as well.
Bucklands Beach vs Ngongotaha 2pm @ Lloyd Elsmore Park Bucklands had a decent run in the cup last season if memory serves me correctly, while Ngongotaha have been competitive in their first season back in NRFL football – If Bucklands can stop Mitch Miller then they have every chance of progressing.. Matamata Swifts vs Onehunga Mangere 2pm @ Matamata Domain One of my favourite out of Auckland clubs host the Mountain Men – one of my top three favourite Manickums play for OMU so I’m gonna win this game either way. Genuinely this is a fixture I am struggling to pick a winner in this clash.
Waitemata FC vs Glen Eden 2pm @ McLeod Park Another West Auckland derby as former AFF/NFF Conference side Waitemata who have had a bit of a meteoric rise through the divisions face off against current AFF/NFF Conference side Glen Eden – on paper this should be a win for the McLeod Road based side but there is that word again… cupsets. Papatoetoe vs Claudelands 2pm @ Murdoch Park An all NRFL Div 2 clash – Papatoetoe who this week were looking for recruits (hope they know about the 10 business days rule) will be fired up for revenge against Claudelands who took a 4-1 win on the 17th April. Maybe home advantage will be the difference this time for Toe. Oratia Utd vs Kiwi True Blues 2pm @ Parrs Park This is an intriguing clash as ASFA side Kiwi True Blues (Rangers fans Grrrr) face off against Oratia at Parrs Park which was where Kiwi True Blues were based until this season when they moved to Anderson Park. So a bit of history there between the two sides. Hibiscus Coast vs Papakura 2pm @ Stanmore Bay Kura get the trip of the round in terms of location with a visit to picturesque Stanmore Bay – will the Kura be celebrating a cupset with a dip in the ocean or will it be Coast who march onto the next round. Only time will tell! Ranui Swanson vs Auckland Wanderers 2pm @ Starling Park Bit of an Ellerslie connection here as Ranui are coached by the sports co-ordinator at YMCA Ellerslie while Auckland Wanderers are this season based at Michaels Ave Reserve. Ranui might have the edge in league position being based in AFF/NFF Conference but the unbeaten ASFA side will fancy their chances. Mangere Utd vs Takapuna AFC 2pm @ Centre Park (Sun) Recently relegated Mangere (despite ALL their protests) host Takapuna in a NRFL Div 2 clash – both sides sit in the top 5 of the league after 9 games so a real close contest to be had. Mangere look the more dangerous team going forward but also are leaking more goals so hopefully a high goal thriller. Also hoping no eligibility drama’s out the back of this one…. Tauranga City vs Waiheke Utd 2pm @ Links Ave (Sun) The fans at Tauranga won’t know what hit them when the much spoken about ultra’s from Waiheke rock up on Sunday. Could be a close game on the pitch though as Waiheke have surprised many this season to sit 2nd in the table and unbeaten, however you get the feeling depth will be tested the further they go through the season.

Last time Melville played on Michaels Ave we had a brand new Heritage strip and Jason was in goal that day for Melville - small world.
We can’t do maths very well as we couldn’t figure out if this was 60 or 61 years….
Congrats to our newest inductee’s into the Ellerslie AFC 100 Club.

Ellerslie AFC vs Mt Albert Ponsonby – 6th May – 3pm Rub of the Green Meaning: Luck; especially in sports and pastimes played on a green surface. Origin: Snooker commentators in the UK often refer to the ‘rub of the green’. From the context of their remarks it is clear that what they mean by the phrase is ‘luck’, usually bad luck. I had always assumed that the green in question was the green baize cloth that covers the snooker table. When I heard the expression used in a similar context in a golf commentary it seemed just as likely that the green might have been a putting green. A little investigation has turned up the fact that, despite golf having ancient origins, the term rub wasn’t first used in relation to that sport, or that of snooker, if indeed that can be called a sport, but was first used in the game of bowls. A ‘rub’ is any hindrance or impediment that diverts the bowl from its proper course. The term is virtually synonymous with ‘let’, which also remains with us in lawn tennis and in the expression ‘let or hindrance’. Over time, a ‘rub’ has altered in meaning from a physical hump, dip or some other hindrance on the green’s surface to ‘a stoke of good or bad fortune’. It would of course be massively irresponsible of me to suggest that luck and luck only was the factor that decided this fixture, in reality luck had little effect on the game – but man does it feel like it did!! I think the best way to describe it is the football cliché – when your not winning, that shot that 99 times out of a 100 from the opposition flies over finds the top corner, and it feels like every little 50/50 in the game is going against you. Again that’s not the entire reality of this situation, we again had a poor opening half, which was punctuated by the opening goal which was an absolute worldie, a couple of misses at the other end before we were punished with the second goal 8 minutes after the first one. Which was a very well taken goal on the end of a quick attacking transition after forcing us to lose the ball with a good press. And while our second half was an improvement dramatically on the 1st half we still struggled to create those super clear chances, and at the moment we are just not sharp enough to convert the tougher chances. Some excellent desperate defending from MAP also made it difficult when we were able to create something. MAP to their credit were happy to sit back on 2-0 and see what we could throw at them, I think Scott will be happy with their defensive concentration and shape – I thought they possibly stopped playing a bit earlier than they needed to but at the end of the day they are the ones taking 3 points home so they probably won’t care.
24
I would like to think had we grabbed a goal at some stage in the game (and there were chances to do that) we may have gone on with some momentum and caused MAP some additional issues, but that’s all hypothetical – at the end of the day we really only started to crank up our game once we were 2-0 down and we just can’t afford to do that. It’s not all bad news – we managed to keep a fair amount of possession and had a bunch of chances – but as I mentioned above we failed to enough nailed on chances with our current form taken into consideration.
Impressive performances from Luca throughout the game and Josh until he came off with a strain – as well as a very promising cameo from John off the bench were real highlights – Luca in particular hitting some form with two man of the match performances in the last two weeks! This coming weekend we host Melville in a tie we really didn’t want – it would have been nice to get a team we don’t play in the league twice this season just for a little bit of a change, however if you want to go deep in the cup then you have to beat teams like Melville at some point. Melville themselves will be eying up this game as they will want a deep cup run such is the history between them and the cup – for us we want to see an continuation of the improvement we saw in the second half against MAP and it’s a chance for us to look at a few things ahead of the game against Franklin which looms as a key game. Ellerslie Reserves vs Mt Albert Ponsonby – 06th May 2017, 12:30pm The Reserves headed into this game on the back of an annoying loss to North Shore last weekend, and also had the added pressure of knowing that both Melville and Western Springs had won to keep the pressure on as we faced up to a MAP side that troubled us last year and we knew would be up for the battle. In team news young Jack Rathbone made his first career start – he has really impressed since committing to the squad about 3 weeks ago and looks to be right in the battle to lock down a starting spot. Adam Scott came in to bank some minutes after being involved with First Team action in the past two weeks while Callum Brown made his second start in 2 weeks after being out for 4 games. On the bench we welcomed back a few players from injury/sickness and unavailability as Josh L, Rowan and Didi all formed a formidable subs bench that also featured Karar and Sam. Matt Sargent made his 3rd start of the season but was extremely unlucky to badly roll his ankle just 4 mins into the game – there was fears of a break but the good news is he will only face a month off – hope to see you back soon Matt. In terms of injuries we have worked through a bit of a tough period with the squad now only missing Andy D, Prethip and Josh A – while Seb and Mark look to be ready for some game time within a week. Unfortunately in the First Team game Josh T had a slight tweak and could be out for a couple of weeks as well. So 5 missing out of 40 is not so bad. In the game Ellerslie started pretty well as MAP got into the game – it was pretty clear early that MAP were keen to contain and counter on a large Michaels Ave pitch and that if we had nicked a goal early it may have been a tricky day for the Mt Albert based side. That almost played out as Joe was released on the left and did well to finish calmly much to the excitement of the home team and fans, however the linesman’s flag ruined the celebration as the goal was chalked off due to offside. Still we pushed on and kept battling, with lots of possession but our final third options were often poor as we either took the wrong pass or rushed our execution. It’s not all grim, we have had some red hot form early in the season and now we are plateauing out as other teams get into their rhythm.
At halftime Ben and the players calmly talked about the issues and made a few adjustments to try and increase penetration in the final third, our ball speed was probably a bit slow as well so all those things were discussed. In the second half MAP sat even deeper and Sneds who had done a good job in midfield had moved into a Gerrard type quarterback role in-between the two centre backs as MAP looked to close ranks and suck us forward and look to expose us on the fast break. They did this very well, and it could have won them all three points were it not for Lloyds (Lalllloyd) fantastic save in the second half – however the points could have also gone our way was it not for their fantastic commitment to their defensive work – as we did pile on the pressure in the second half but MAP were resolute and steadfast in their protection of their clean sheet – and what made it all the more amazing was the fact they had an outfielder in goal after their GK went off injured in the first half.

Attention now turns to Franklin next weekend as the Reserves earned a week off as the preliminary round of the NRFL Reserves Knockout competition is played – we have drawn Melville away in our first round on the 5th of June in what should be another cracker game. Other Results from this round:
