Welcome to another match day at Michaels Ave – at the time of writing this on Friday morning the chances of Michaels Ave being heaving today with games seems slim with the weather this week and last night putting pressure on council which I suspect will result in a lot of closed fields. Such is the beauty of turf as we will box on with our main game as Manurewa come to town, Welcome Marty, Matt and the team. This is a big game for both teams as we head towards the end of the first round – I don’t think we need to elaborate more on why this fixture is so important. The Reserves have bounced back from a little slump to record a good result last week and will really want to send a message in this fixture and with a strong team named including the return of our US college stars Alex Clark and Josh Lai it should be an interesting curtain raiser. *looks outside at the very heavy shower that just started – shakes my head* Assuming there are very few other games on this weekend it’s a perfect time to focus on a few other things – Firstly there is an impending All Whites announcement at 10am on Friday, we are led to believe that two ex-Ellerslie players will be named to take part in the Indian quad tournament, so congrats to Andre de Jong and Myer Bevan!! Also on the player news front we are thrilled to announce the return of Conor Tracey to Ellerslie AFC – Conor spent a couple of years with us prior to his first move to England and comes back to us after having spent all the summer season with Auckland City FC as first team backup. That experience will have done Conor well, working with some quality coaches and players and we hope we can help him towards his ultimate goal of picking up a pro contract towards the end of this season. No matter what happens with the rain we will be going ahead on Sunday morning with the Champions League final live and loud on the big screen in the club – come on down from 6:30am and find yourself a spot. We didn’t quite get the interest we needed to put on breakfast but we will do an order of Macca’s via uber eats during the first half and we will have kitchen facilities available for those who want to make a coffee or some toast etc. Finally thanks to all the EAFC volunteers who have worked tirelessly this season so far getting our players on the park and ticking all the extra boxes as well – you know who you are and we appreciate your efforts! Cheers

NRFL Predictor is baaaack - with all new scientificcy wiz what’s to help us pull a random prediction out of thin air! An interesting round ahead with the majority of games being played by teams in the top half against teams in the bottom half, with the exception of 3rd v 4th match and a 9th v 10th cellar dweller classic. Hibiscus Coast vs Fencibles Utd Stanmore Bay @ 3pm Coast have been the definition of hot and cold this season with credible results against Melville (1-0 loss), MAP (1-1) and a 6-3 win over Waiheke, but in the same breath a 2-2 draw with Oratia stands out as a poor result. Fencibles continue to be the surprise package of the league after winning promotion last year and they are still the only team to take points of Melville which is no mean feat. PREDICTION: Fencibles won’t be distracted by the idyllic Stanmore Bay surroundings, 3-1 Melville Utd vs Tauranga City Gower Park @ 3pm Run away leaders Melville take on WaiBOP neighbours Tauranga in a match that saw the Bay side lose in double figures, something they will want to avoid this season on the carpet at Gower Park. Tauranga have been close in some games to picking up a few more points and will want to see if they can get something out of this match - Melville this season just seem to have the knack of finding how to win. PREDICTION: If Tauranga come and park the bus they could sneak a draw but Melville probably to win 4-1 Forrest Hill Milford vs Oratia Utd Becroft Park @ 3pm A big game for both teams , FHM will be keen to bounce back after losing to MAP last time out and Oratia have been the targets of some nasty comments on the old Northern League Forum so they will be keen to prove the doubters wrong, which they have started to do with successive draws in the last two weeks PREDICTION: Home ground and the boot of Allan Pearce should be enough for FHM to take the 3 points, something like 5-2 Waiheke United vs Mt Albert Ponsonby Onetangi Hill @ 3pm Last time Waiheke played at home they lost their over hyped 5 year unbeaten record on the island (although they lost on penalties to Ellerslie in the cup several years ago) and so the locals who are already reportedly upset may turn against the home team if this match doesn’t go very well. MAP have hit the transfer market and picked up a class midfielder from Three Kings in the form of Scott Wallace and will want to rub salt into the islanders wounds. PREDICTION: Going for an upset here and picking MAP to win 1-0 Waitemata FC vs North Shore Utd McLeod Park @ 3pm Things look a little bleak for Mata FC as they take on a much changed North Shore team, with a lot of new imported faces Shore have been a little up and down but will look at this match as a way for them to get back on the right side of the results and stay in the hunt for a promotion spot. The home team need points from somewhere as they head into the penultimate game of the first round (although they have the shambolic twice postponed match against Manurewa to play) PREDICTION: Shore will need to be better than they were against Rewa and if they are they should win comfortably: 3-0

12

Ellerslie AFC vs Manurewa AFC Michaels Ave @ 5pm We don’t make predictions on our own games - far too dangerous to do so. All we can say about this game is this is a big clash for both teams and barring a draw the bottom half of the table will be thrown wide open after this fixture, will the home side put six points between themselves and the visitors or will Rewa draw level with the home side with 2 games in hand.

14

The match was abandoned in the 72nd minute (18 minutes

+ additional time still to play) by Referee C-K Waugh, due to unsafe playing conditions, that is, significant surface water on the field. The score at the time of abandonment was 4-0 to Onehunga Sports. The Lotto NRFL Manager has received and reviewed the Referee’s report. The Lotto NRFL Manager also referred to Lotto NRFL Regulations. The Lotto NRFL Manager’s final decision regarding the fixture is as per below;

The result of the match at time of abandonment shall stand as a 4-0 result to Onehunga Sports. In the match between Eastern Suburbs and Western Springs, on the 12th May 2018 in the Lotto NRFL Men’s Premier Division, an ineligible player took the field for Western Springs. This fixture was circled on the calendar in the coaching office at Michaels Ave from the day the draw was confirmed - it wasn't a fixture we targeted for points, but a fixture we targeted to measure the improvement in our performance, so far this season and from last season.

For the Reserves it was also a chance to test themselves against the 2nd best team in the league last season after two classic games on Gower Park #2 last season. Gower Park #2 was in much better shape than last season and proved to be a decent surface to play on and the reserves quickly fell into a counter attack pattern against a Melville team who showed a panache for keeping the ball for long periods of the game. Ellerslie opened the scoring via the penalty spot when Joe bravely didn't pull his head out of a challenge which resulted in a kick to the head and the referee had no hesitation pointing to the spot - this did fire off a bit of discussion on the sidelines about the ruling, but eventually after working through the rules (and some help from twitter) we settled on the call being correct. Joe recovered from the kick to calmly convert the spot kick to give us the lead, a lead we held onto into the halftime break. A change at the break saw Josh Lai make his first appearance of the season, having just returned from College Football over in the states. Ross Borrill came into the game early in the second half to replace Jordan Bresler who had first team duties to attend to. It was our third sub that kick started some scoring as Luke McKay scored in the 68th minute only 3 minutes after coming into the game.

18

I'm not 100% sure of the time Melville scored their goal to narrow our lead - It's been entered into Comet as the 4th minute which is not correct, if memory serves it was in the later portion of the second half.

Melville did have a chance to level the game when the referee very harshly adjudged Tavis to have handballed in the box when it clearly came off his chest - however justice was served twice as Lloyd saved the spotkick and then the followup shot to keep our lead intact. Rather than defend our slender lead the Reserves went on another attack and a square ball across the box evaded everyone but Luke who was more than happy to add his second goal of the game in injury time. A happy Reserves team tucked into some pizza in the clubrooms with 3 points safely locked into the standings while the fans man of the match Lloyd Huysmans did his duties as backup GK to the first team game - such is the life of a man in his role.

Attention then switched to the first team game on the immaculate #1 pitch at Gower Park - however natures patience which had shown signs of fading during the reserves game completely gave out and we were dosed in some heavy showers as the players kicked off. Melville ended up attacking the clubrooms end of the pitch, I would have said we were attacking the road end of the pitch but I think to be completely fair not a lot of action ended up deep in that half of the pitch - well not in the first half anyway. I don't think it was any secret we setup to attack on the counter and we knew we were in for a bunch of defensive work in this game, and Melville provided no surprises there as they were straight into the attack and kept us busy early. Aside from a goal ruled out due to offside and a sharp save from Div (which saw him collide with the post and pick up a knock) we managed to keep mighty Melville at jabbing length.

19

With Div shaking off his knock we tried to settle ourselves in the game however in the 19th minute Melville cut us open when Mark Jones playing on the left cut inside and delivered a fine ball to the back post where a Melville player had made a nice run in behind Denish - unluckily for us his mishit volley went straight across goal where the lethal Jama Boss pounced and tapped home for as easy a goal as you can get. What was pleasing to see was that the Ellerslie heads didn't drop and in the 22nd minute we brought ourselves level again when Conrad Benefield challenged a header from a Dylan Horgan free kick which left Josh Torrens with a free header at the back post, and his header proved good enough to beat Max Tommy in the Melville goal. Melville did have several more chances to take the lead, however a combination of hard work, good scrambling defence and some solid goalkeeping meant we headed for Gatorade in the break still even with the home side. The changing rooms were buzzing during the interval with the players having some real belief we could cause an up-

set and we came out in the 2nd half with a renewed purpose.

The second half stuck mainly to the script of the first with Melville enjoying the bulk of possession and territory, but as we repelled their attacks one by one a sense of frustration grew in the home team - and it was no more obvious than in the actions of keeper Max Tommy who appealed every free kick and pleaded with the referee to make us hurry up our restarts.

20

Our general feeling was the deeper we went into the second half the better we looked defensively - we still didn't offer much to trouble Tommy in goal other than a couple of half chances - but I think there was a time when both teams seemed to think the scor-

ing was over for the rest of this match. Winners - true winners - find a way however and Melville steeled from the experience of missing out on promotion last year kept on pushing and were rewarded when in the 83rd min Jama Boss drew a foul from Dan McLean in the box which gave the referee no other option than to point to the spot. Jama stepped up, dusted himself off and calmly planted the ball past Div in goal to give Melville a lead that we were unlikely to pull back this late in the game - however referee seemed to have other ideas and let us take the kickoff while several of the Melville players had not made their way back to their own half (in a bit of an ironic twist in the timewasting drama) and this opportunity almost led to Art Twigg getting a shot off, however Melville scrambled well and covered the shot and conceded a corner in the process. This stoppage in play led to a rather humorous (despite the scenario) interchange between the Melville players, the Melville bench and the match officials about the "quick" kickoff. The final whistle sounded and the Ellerslie players slumped to the ground, gutted after having nothing to show for the effort they displayed - but also with a bunch more belief after going 11 rounds with a league heavyweight before losing via a TKO. Next up a massive clash against Manurewa AFC at home on the turf at 5pm while the Reserves host Manurewa at 2:30pm. Congrats to Ben Shaw who picked up MAN of the MATCH honours after battling through 75 odd minutes with a shoulder injury. He celebrated his prize in style in a nod to former teammate Jason Mann whose birthday it was that day with a swappa bottle of Waikato.

Women’s Conference Round-up Sunday saw us taking on bottom club (I think they are bottom - the league tables are reaaaaly hard to follow) Manukau City at Walter Massey Park.

Manukau have a reputation for playing hard so across the club we made the call to shelve the youth development program we had been working on in the previous weeks - it was good timing as the 16th’s red team were down to bare bones in their game on Saturday as well. The game turned out to be a pretty special occasion for the team as they showed some attacking flair and smashed home 7 goals (including a hatrick for Ella and a double for Tove) and only conceded the 1. It wasn’t just the result that was special it was also a milestone game as Tove Bennett who is a one club woman made her 100th First Team appearance to join an exclusive club alongside teammates Deb Tutty, Anna Howden and bestie Hannah Kelly. Looking forward the Women’s First Team have a break from league action for the next 3-4 weeks but we have a big cup game against FHM on Queen’s Birthday - best of luck ladies!
