WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE Today’s program focused on the Ellerslie Women’s First Team and their match against Norwest Utd – so welcome to Chris and his team to Michaels Ave on Mothers Day!

It’s another busy Sunday at Michaels Ave with our Women’s Div 4 and Div 3 teams both at home at 11am – they will be having a Mothers Day feast in the clubrooms afterwards!

Our two Women’s Div 1 teams are also in action but both away this week, Reserves take on fellow unbeaten team Bucklands Beach while Rebels travel to Crum Park to take on Bay Olympic.

Make sure you follow our facebook page for more news, highlights and other interest pieces about the club – we are stepping up our game this season, on the park and off.

WELCOME TO THE AVE

FROM THE DUGOUT Welcome to the final Women’s Conference round of the season…. Which has been brought forward to replace the Cup BYE this weekend. To date Ellerslie has a perfect record but this game will be a tough test as we have not had the best of results in the past against Norwest Utd!

Norwest have a winning record so far with 2 wins, a draw and a loss in their ledger with their second win coming last week against Eastern Suburbs with an 8-1 win! The Ellerslie coaches are happy with the performance of the team through the first four games and feel confident in their team’s abilities to continue to stick to the game plan on both sides of the ball. The team has spent a lot of time on both sides of the ball this week with Coach Ian and Callum working hard to shore up the back four while Coach Brendon and Ryan have been working to improve the firepower the team has upfront. Hopefully you will see the culmination of that hard work from players and coaches in the match today. Have fun, Ryan Shiffman

FROM THE DUGOUT

ELLERSLIE VS MANUKAU UTD Ryan Shiffman’s Women’s First Team hosted Manukau United’s inaugural women’s team on Sunday afternoon at Michaels Ave, with Ellerslie looking to go 4 wins from 4 games in the Women’s AFF/NFF Conference. The re-incarnation of a Manukau based women’s team took us all by surprise at the beginning of the season with Manukau City struggling through the 2018 Conference season and ending up on zero points – so to see Manukau United pick up the pieces and put it all back together is a real testament to the fortitude of their commitment to Women’s football and the players who have been involved in both those sides. Very little was known about their team in comparison to the other sides in the league which we have managed to research some some extent, so this made this game a little dangerous for Ellerslie as we stepped out onto the field not knowing what level of team we were going to be facing. We did of course look at the results from the first three rounds, which saw Manukau draw against Norwest and then beat Beachlands by the same margin we did before losing surprisingly to Central 3-1 – not really a big enough sample size for us to confidently know what we were facing. Luckily for Ellerslie the team brought the same intensity to this game as the previous round against Eastern Suburbs and we again grabbed an early goal to set us on our way. A second goal followed

in the first half with Scottish star Leigh Atiken grabbing both first half goals. The weather was quite warm and meant there was quite a lot of subbing as the game wore on and that did effect the rhythm of the game, but not Leigh who grabbed her hatrick after poking home from close range after Kim had been left alone by the Manukau defence and knocked the ball down for Leigh to grab her Xth goal of the season. Manukau's goalkeeper was having a storming game and made some clutch saves to keep her team with a sniff of the contest - however an own goal in the 73rd min and the substitution of the aforementioned keeper meant there was more goals in the contest.

Enter Hollie (not Holly, I made that mistake last week) who had been unfortunate to find the Manukau keeper so efficient in the first 73 minutes of the game - however her replacement was much more charitable for Hollie and she grabbed two goals in the 84th and 85th minute to close the book on the scoring. That meant we recorded a 6-0 win and another clean sheet for Erin and maintained a 3 point gap between us and Hibiscus Coast, and with boogey team Norwest up next weekend (after the rounds got re-organised) we head into that key clash in some good form.
