ELLERSLIE AFC AGM Thursday 25th May @ Ellerslie AFC Clubrooms 9pm - all paid members welcome!
NRFL Football is back this weekend at the Ave after our short flirtation with the Chatham Cup – and this weekend we welcome Franklin United lead by coach Geoff Cooper and skipper Darren Woolnough to Ellerslie. Both teams need some points on the board in this fixture so it will be interesting to see how this battle plays out, particularly since last time these two sides met Franklin came out on top. For the Reserves after a weekend off and a run of slightly below par form this is a chance to get back to winning ways – Ben and his team are focused on playing positive winning football to achieve their goal of winning the league and also giving his players the best chance of pushing for a first team spot. We also have a couple of new faces joining us this weekend, Ben and Dan Culpan signed last week but were ineligible to play in the Chatham Cup so we look forward to seeing them on the pitch against Franklin. A couple of other exciting pieces of news to share – Firstly happy Birthday on Friday to Jason Mann who celebrated with us on Thursday evening with a Waikato Draught cake – points are for you today mate! In fixture news our Women’s First Team have drawn Glenfield Rovers in the Women’s Knockout Cup on 4/5th June – I think that means in our last five years we have drawn Three Kings (twice), Eastern Suburbs, Lynn Avon and now Glenfield – some testing fixtures to be sure! Our Men’s Champs team start the defence of their Northern Knockout Cup crown against our next ranked Ellerslie team (Boylan from AFF 1) on the 3rd of June – we will bring you an exclusive story covering that in our next issue of “The Ave”. The Senior Club is planning a No Pay, No Play weekend coming up to encourage the payment of subs – subs are the clubs biggest revenue stream and we rely on payment of these to operate the club so please don’t make us spend our time chasing you. In Junior/Youth news we are proud to congratulate our Girls U16 Rep Team who won the AFF Preseason Cup – although there were a series of defaults in the final stages of the tournament the girls were dominant to that point and would have fancied winning any finals games that were played – it’s great to see success at this level, keep it up ladies! Cheers Tim Adams Senior Club Chairman - ELLERSLIE AFC

The NRFL Predictor is back after looking at Cup fixtures last weekend (where we picked 9 out of 14 results) so here's hopeing for that kind of accuracy again - fingers crossed: MELVILLE UTD vs MANUKAU CITY 2:45pm @ Gower Park It's the new hoops vs the old stripes - If I'm Man city I am def. taking an alternative strip as I think there will be too much white clashing - as for the game well I know Melville pretty well at this point and they are prepared and excited for the challenge but Man City have X-Factor so can see them giving Melville a good game. PREDICTION: 3-2 to Melville after coming back from 2-1 down! NORTH SHORE UTD vs HIBISCUS COAST AFC 3pm @ Allen Hill Pink Shirt day at Allen Hill this weekend, a really positive step from a club well on the up in recent seasons - a good fixture to do it in as well as we have the only North Harbour derby in Div 1 this season. Coast have been a bit up and down under their new coach but if they can keep gun scorer Ross Langworthy quiet they will rate their chances against a solid hard working Shore team. PREDICTION: Shore seem to be going from strength to strength, pick them to win this but after a speed wobble (2-1) MT ALBERT PONSONBY vs ORATIA UTD 3pm @ Anderson Park This one of two fixtures this weekend that is almost too close to call - and that's not meant to disrespect MAP but they do seem a little fragile this season, a win here keeps them in the hunt with the top 5 while Oratia will want to stay with the middle 5 and not get drawn down towards the bottom 2. Some encouraging signs from Oratia lately after pushing Springs pretty close last time out in the league. PREDICTION: MAP to nick it with their favourite score 1-0 WESTERN SPRINGS AFC vs TAURANGA CITY 3pm @ Seddon Fields At times Springs look unbeatable, then just as you think they are ready to match Three Kings record in Div 1 a few years ago under Paul Marshall they stumbled a little against Tia and apparently were not so convincing against non-league Cambridge in the cup - they are too good a team to struggle for long so Tauranga will have to be on their toes to get something from this game. PREDICTION: Can't see Tauranga being able to push Springs too much, could be a blow-out 3-0 Springs WAITEMATA FC vs METRO FC 3pm @ McLeod Park Normally these games are at night at McLeod Park so not sure what is going on here - maybe another victim of the council light quality drama, regardless this is an important game for the away team as they face a real fight to stay in the league - early in the season people thought once they shook off some injuries they would improve but they have lost 4 players last week transferring to other clubs and they still have some injuries to worry about - Waitemata on the other hand have been pretty competitive in the league and will want points here to stay away from bottom of the table drama. PREDICTION: Can't see Mata taking their foot off the throat, feel sorry for Metro but 2-0 loss is what i'm picking ELLERSLIE AFC vs FRANKLIN UTD 5pm @ Michaels Ave Personally for me this is a hard one to pick, Ellerslie (and Franklin) on long runs without points and for the home side a loss to Franklin last time these two teams met (albeit on a swamp at Bledisloe). I'm nervous because while Ellerslie have played better in recent weeks against pretty decent opposition we can't give Franklin a sniff - because to their credit they have scored a few goals this season, that hasn't been their problem, the other end of the park is their issue at the moment. PREDICTION: Home advantage should be enough for Ellerslie, both teams really need points though

Ellerslie AFC vs Melville Utd – 13th May @ 3pm (yes 3pm) at Michaels Ave Reserve Sometimes in the middle of a rut in the league a cup game is just what the doctor ordered – a chance for the team to play without the fear of losing and having to look at the league table every day the following week. Even more so when you play a team that is ranked above you and apart from pride and performing well there is no burden of expectation. We will talk more about the game later – there are a few off-field things to clarify first! On the day of the game we were doing a few build up tweets for the game with kick off and venue details as per normal – then NZF posted an image with all the #ChathamCup fixtures on it, which included kickoff times. We noticed our kick off time was listed incorrectly as 2pm so we tweeted a short reply saying just FYI kick off is actually 3pm. That’s when Melville noticed the error – they had been told 2pm, the NZF website showed 2pm, they had organised travel for 2pm. That’s not a nice situation to be in and it can throw a team’s prep way out, so credit to the Melville coaching and admin staff for getting on with it and not letting it affect them on the park. On social media a couple of commentators pointed some fingers at us as hosts, we should have been in contact with Melville directly to confirm this kind of detail. On reflection I had a few chances to do this I guess, when I was getting team lists off Bruce and when I was organising travel details with Maney – however it’s only on reflection that I even realised there was an issue. For those interested in the process and how this problem came to be – here is how it works.
32
NZF make the draw (on twitter) then pass the draw to the home teams local federation, so in our case AFF to make contact with the home club re day/time/venue of the game. Bear in mind this round of the cup was able to be played Saturday or Sunday (or Friday if you had the opposition’s approval) so there was a fair amount of info to
be gathered by AFF on behalf of NZF. I had a call from Martin of the AFF Competitions team asking me to confirm the fixture. I said we definitely want Saturday and we are just going to check if we have a grass game or a turf game – give me 24 hours. He said no problem, we will leave the fixture in it’s placeholder state of 2pm until we confirm. Our confirmation game back within 24 hours confirming a 3pm kick off on the turf and since there are lights and no game scheduled afterwards extra time and pen’s would be no issue. So 3pm was locked in with AFF who would pass the info onto NZF for their info. I will admit I never checked the NZF website for the fixture details as AFF had a draw on their website for any Chatham Cup games involving an AFF based side so there was no need. At this point you could assume AFF never passed the info onto NZF however there were two interactions I had with NZF/AFF directly that assured me that NZF knew it was a 3pm kick off. 1) there was a social media post about a week before the game and it had our kick off time as 2pm, and I messaged them and they corrected it to 3pm, I didn’t tell them it was a 3pm kickoff I just said the kickoff time was wrong. 2) the day before the game AFF emailed us some new NZF Chatham Cup match day sheets to fill out – our sheet had 2pm on it as the kick off time, I emailed AFF back and said our one was wrong and within 5 minutes Allie Smith of NZF had emailed back saying here is the correct version – which had been changed to 3pm, so she obviously knew it was 3pm as well. So why didn’t NZF change their website when AFF told them about the change, sometime between 24 hours and 48 hours after the draw had been done? Don’t know – but that seems to be where the problem is. And again I feel sorry for Melville as they have been the innocent victims in all this – something travelling teams shouldn’t have to deal with, I mean no-one who is having to travel from one city to another ever wants to have to deal with delays, even 15mins can be disruptive!
So moving on – once Melville readjusted their timelines the next drama was about to rear its head, now personally I don’t think this was that much of an issue and frankly it was handled pretty poorly by the match official. Melville were keen to debut their new home strip which as you can see on the next page is a hooped Red and White front, with a full white back – a nice looking shirt, tidy design. The referee carefully considered if there was any clash between that shirt and our slightly richer red shirt with one black vertical stripe. After a couple of minutes they decided there was no issue, which was lucky for Melville I guess as they had not brought their traditional white away kit with them. Ironically the only issue that was brought up was that our keeper had to change from his all white kit to an alternative colour as there was too much white in Melville’s strip – so all sorted right? Nope!
33
So the teams start lining up for the kickoff outside the changing rooms – this is the first time either team has seen the others strip, so there are at this time some comments from the players (mostly my team I think) about the clash, and the referee then decides actually this is not right – and since Melville don’t have another strip he instructs us to go inside and change strip. So some of the players wander back into the changing rooms, some of them stay outside and argue with the referee about it and the coaching staff makes it’s way over to talk to the referee and his assistants. I’m stuck at the top of the scaffold while all this is happening so I’m only able to guess at what was said, but it looked chaotic. Eventually after some time the referee then decides we are just going to play on and everyone gets on with it we finally enter the field ready for play. Just from my point of view behind the camera the difference between the shirts is pretty clear – it’s no Phoenix vs Victory at QBE shambles but I guess it’s far from ideal, and as a team manager myself it’s probably not a risk I would have taken. Right to the game then – Melville started the game defending the YMCA end of the pitch (or Cancer corner as it’s been known recently) with the efficiency and incisiveness we saw at Gower Park a couple of NRFL rounds ago, however they quickly found they were up against a side with a point to prove and far more resolute than that last encounter. They were rewarded though early when Liam Hayes struck a fine shot to open the scoring in the 9th minute and Ellerslie had Jason to thank when he pulled a spiderman save out to deny Marc Evan’s a header from pretty much point blank.
34
Those two incidents spurred us on and in the 25th minute of the game Andrew Wallace broke forward and got around the back of the Melville backline before sliding a perfectly placed shot past the keeper into the far bottom corner of the goal – a deserved goal for vice skipper Andy as he has worked hard on his game and his role in the team over the past couple of weeks. I think the period between our goal and halftime was our best period of the game, and while I don’t recall any clear cut scoring chances for us we generally looked com-
petitive around the field and Monju was doing a pretty decent job on Melville’s danger man George Curry. In the second half Melville took control and had the most of possession as we were left to concentrate on our defending and make the most of the possession we did get. The players worked extremely hard both individually and as a team which was very pleasing to see, especially after we had conceded another early goal in the second half (in the 51st min) to Stafford Dowling. The effort on show was a real positive as we head into a crucial league game next week against Franklin!
Late in the game as we pushed a few players forward and made a few changes which saw Jack Rathbone make his Ellerslie AFC First Team debut, Jack is the second Rathbone to represent the club, his older brother Zac accumulated 12 apps for the Ponies First Team. Unfortunately our efforts to push on and level the game saw us punished on the counter as Melville made a quick break before hitting the post after rounding the keeper, unfortunately Glenny’s desperate sliding clearance couldn’t stop another Melville player from scoring the simplest of goals (his first apparently) to seal the game and the cup tie. All in all a great effort from both sides and Melville deserving of their win were rewarded in the next round of the cup with a home game against Eastern Suburbs (which would have been a nice game for us to have by the way). So concentration now turns to Franklin and 3 vital points for both teams as we run into the last couple of games of the first round – good luck to Melville for the rest of the season and to our boys train hard and smart Tuesday and Thursday and play with the guts and intelligence we saw on Saturday and things will be ok on the weekend!
