NRFL Predictor is back - we have some cracking games this weekend to look at including a cracking tie between Waiheke and Fencibles which last year turned into a very dramatic game at Onetangi Sports Park - so let's get straight into it: Tauranga City vs Oratia Utd Links Ave @ 3pm Tia have to get a win (statistically) from somewhere at some point, but away to Tauranga that's a tough ask for anyone. Tauranga did look to be short of any depth so you would expect them to get weaker as the season gets older - just as Oratia will be getting more and more desperate for points PICK: Hard to see past Tauranga in the battle of the set piece experts, 2-1. Melville Utd vs North Shore Utd Gower Park @ 3pm A clash of the media superstars - both of these clubs have really stepped up their social media profiles this season and whlie Melville are full steam ahead and look to be the biggest lock in for promotion since Paul Marshall's Three Kings went unbeaten, North Shore are in a bit of a rebuild phase with a new coach and a lot of new players. Last season Melville struggled against Shore, with a draw and a loss - but a 2-0 win early in the first round points to improvement this season. PICK: Will be a tough game for Melville as everyone wants to knock them off now - they have enough quality though to take a 2-1 win.
Waiheke United vs Fencibles Onetangi Park @ 3pm This weekends featured game - last time these two teams met on the Island there were literally fireworks on and off the pitch, as last minute equaliser by Fencibles was celebrated infront of the Waiheke Kop who did not take that kindly, with some brave soul issuing death threats to Fencibles social media inbox's that evening. A lot of things have changed since that match, particuarly with Waiheke so will this match still have the fireworks.... PICK: Fencibles are hot and cold - Waiheke had one of their best players sent off last week. Going for Waiheke to sneak it 1-0. Forrest Hill Milford vs Manurewa AFC Becroft Park @ 3pm An interesting fixture - FHM have had a bit of a rough month, losing some big games and also seeing their talisman and best player Allan Pearce transfer back to Three Kings Manurewa on the other hand have huffed and puffed and played some good periods but have just made too many mistakes, but they have talent as we saw when they beat North Shore. PICK: FHM to sneak a 1-1 draw after Rewa pile on the pressure
12
Waitemata FC vs Hibiscus Coast McLeod Park @ 3pm Another interesting battle - Waitemata have picked up their game recently and got some points, largely as far as I can tell with the same squad they have had all season, so the coaching must have had a positive effect on the Te Atatu based club. Coast have been the definition of hot and cold this season, with some impressive wins against high flying teams and then some disapointting results (from their point of view) against lower teams. I don't think they are in any trouble of being drawn into the relegation fight, but they need to not fall to pieces. PICK: Going for a draw here too - 2-2.

First up we have some transfer news for you all: Three Kings have been busy in the transfer market as they re-signed Alan Pearce from Forrest Hill Milford as well as picking up former Lilywhite and Waitakere United striker Horace James (pictured below) Auckland City players Enrico Tavano and Cam Howieson have also joined TKU as they battle to get out of the relegation fight they find themselves in. Eastern Suburbs picked up a couple of new signings, including Jaiden van der Heijden from Onehunga Mangere, with the signing paying off as he hit the only goal against Glenfield Rovers. 19 year old Luke Humphreys is another new signing for the Lilywhites as he joins from American University.
14
One of the more publicised transfers was the once failed then completed transfer of Imran Shaah from
Manukau United to Western Springs, which sparked a hilarious exchange on facebook between a belligerent Kevin Fallon and Chris Zoricich. In other NRFL News Terry Hobin from NFF will take over the NRFL Manager role on an interim basis, Terry has a lot of experience from his time as Fixtures Manager at NFF so looks to be a good appointment from a beleaguered AFF. Ian Hiscox takes over the NRFL Referee’s appointments also on an interim basis, this appointment will include referee appointments for AFF while they seek a replacement for Paul Smith. Is the curse of the coast finally broken? Two back to back wins over Hibiscus at Stanmore Bay seems to indicate that this once impossible venue has become, well, possible. Round 12 signified the start of the second round for the Northern Region Football League Division 1 and for us that meant a trip to Stanmore Bay, a location that despite it’s obvious attractions has never been a place we have looked forward to visiting. A First Team record (excluding today’s result) of something like 4 or 5 losses and 1 win. That solitary win came in the opening round of the 2017 NRFL Div 1 season when Ellerslie romped to a 4-1 win – thanks largely to a goal and top performance from Adam Barkley. It’s not just the First Team who have experienced issues on the coast, the Reserves have had some rough results here as well – but in recent times the Reserves have gained the upper hand and that was no different today as the Ian Davidson and Grant Marshall led reserves (who were a little light on numbers again) got home comfortably. Monju opened the scoring, playing in a higher midfield role than he normally does as he got on the end of a nice ball over the top – before swivelling and looping a nice volley over the stranded keeper. We did have the ball in the back of the net a second time in the first half – however a late offside call meant the impressive Josh Lai was not able to cap his excellent game off with a goal. So halftime saw us head into the sheds with a narrow 1 goal lead despite our dominance in large periods of the first 45 we just couldn’t find the elusive second goal – but mercurial skipper Michael Glenny went about changing all that late in the second period – more on that later.
18
A debut in the reserves came for Alex Arnold who skippered our U17’s team at the Auckland City Youth Development Trust tournament – he replaced Josh Lai who had first team bench duties to attend to and immediately impressed the senior players in the reserves with his toughnosed approach and his tight marking – certainly a player for the future!
Aaron entered the game in the 69′ min as he replaced Adam Scott who through a series of solid performances had earned a bench spot and then Marshy replaced Seb with 9 minutes of regulation time to go. That’s when Mike struck with his first goal for several seasons – up in the box for a corner that was not cleared properly from Coast and Mike’s “ex midget goal scoring sensation” instincts took over as he calmly toe poked the ball home to double the lead, much to his delight. Sadly for Mike a youngster was about to steal his limelight, Will Sargent who reluctantly plays fullback (very well I might add) and in this game had also played on the wing showed absolute disrespect for his captain as he scored a worldie in the 2nd minute of added time with a thumping shot from at least halfway, over the Coast keeper and into the back of the net, a quality strike!
All in all a efficient performance against a tricky Coast side, with the coaches glad to take 3 points and focus on a key game this coming weekend against a MAP team we were lucky to take a point from last time. ——————————————————————————————— The First Team game was up next and there were a couple of changes in the team due to injury and suspension – Tariro took a knock to his knee against Melville on Monday so Aalok grabbed his first start in Ellerslie colours and Jordan Bresler made his full return from injury replacing Ben Shaw who picked up his 5th yellow card in Monday’s cup game. The start of this game was very cagey with both teams feeling each other out – Hibiscus intent on building up from the back and pulling us over to one side of the field so they could expose the other side, with pace on both flanks. We had some good moments going forward which also exposed Fletcher in goal who did not look comfortable right from the get go – in one particular play he scuffed out a backpass which
19
went straight to an Ellerslie player who tried their luck on goal but put it over. Fletcher started giving his team a serve before a member of the Coast deck started calling him out on his mistake – quite comical all round. It wasn’t until the 39th minute (which is a period of the game when we normally would concede) that we took the lead with Alex Clarke making his first league start in 2018 smashed a free kick over (or around) a very short wall and into the goal – I can’t remember the last time we scored a direct free kick* so this was very surprising and of course very welcome. *Its probably not that long ago, I just have a poor memory for these kind of things. Apart from the goal the only other action of note was when Fletcher collided with Rowan “The Beast” Corbett just prior to halftime and the former came off much the worse with pretty bad ankle injury – To be fair he battled on for the remainder of the half and all of the second half but I can’t help but think it was hindering him somewhat.
Coast did make a change at halftime as they brought on Dan Cyra for Dan Fennell in presumably an attacking move to kick start a comeback but that work was all undone by a combination of back luck and calm finishing. Rowan grabbed a real poachers goal as he raced onto a flicked on clearance and showed plenty of composure to slide his shot past Fletcher in goal to double the lead. Coast responded to that 2nd goal by bringing on more pace in Trent Mayes – who some consider the quickest player going around in NRFL – however it just wasn’t the home teams game and courtesy of another free kick masterclass from Alex we sealed the points in the 78th minute with a beauty of a free kick.
20
So that was this game all done and dusted – well almost – a trip to the Coast is never complete without a trip to the curry house – this time a new venue (Big Tikka) which was very well enjoyed by all involved.
Some big games coming up, this weekend both teams host MAP in games that are very important for very different reasons for the First Team and Reserves – come on down and check them out: Saturday Michaels Ave Reserve Reserves @ 2:30pm, First Team @ 5pm

Round Two of the ISPS Handa Chatham Cup saw 8 fixtures go into extra time and 3 of those 8 went all the way to penalties. In the Northern Region we saw most games go the way of the league table form book, however there was two upsets, with the biggest one being Papamoa from the WaiBOP Premiership beating Bay Olympic who play in the NRFL Premier League. The other upset was in the replayed game where NRFL Div 2 side Franklin Utd bowed out against Waikato Unicol. The other result which was slightly against the cards was when NRFL Div 2 side Bucklands Beach beat NRFL Div 1 side Waitemata - although in reality only a couple of league placings currently separate the two sides. For Ellerslie a good performance against league leaders Melville - and we had every opportunity to hold onto the win but credit to Melville, they found something every time they needed it and grabbed a dramatic extra time win! As you can see with the draw to our right, giant-killers Papamoa have been rewarded with a glamour cup-tie against Birkenhead, while there is a all premier league tie as Glenfield host holders Onehunga Sports in what will be a massive game on Sunday.

Women’s Reserves Match Report - Beachlands Maraetai The Women’s Reserves took on Beachlands last Sunday at Michaels Ave, Beachlands have had a very good first third of the season as they sit ontop of the table narrowly from Eastern Suburbs. We played fairly well with no subs for large parts of the game at Te Puru Domain so were somewhat confident of getting a result in this fixture. We were lucky enough to have a full bench, thanks heaps to the first team players who helped us out: Flo, Deb and Ash.
Beachlands threw a tactical switch at us straight away with their excellent sweeper playing upfront - this was the 3rd game I had watched this team play and this was the first time I have seen her not play at the back - which meant my pre-game tactics which revolved around keeping our attacks away from her were null and void. The visitors took the lead with a nice free kick midway through the first half—however we were not behind long and Ash levelled the score for us with a nice shot from the edge of the area (maybe further out if she is telling the story).
Lauren played a crucial role in the game, she saved several one v ones and faced two penalties without conceding and made an excellent save on the second one tipping it onto the bar. If I’m honest I don’t recall how the winning goal was scored, but credit to Beachlands as they on the balance of play deserved the 3 points but we made a good step in the right direction and will take this performance and use it to add a bit of belief into this talented team. Player of the day was in no doubt: Lauren McKenzie
