5 After the Men’s Team hosted Manurewa on Thursday the sole focus of this weekend is Monday’s Kate Sheppard Cup blockbuster as Ellerslie take on last years finalists Hamilton Wanderers. Hamilton also knocked the ponies out of the cup last year so the tie has extra motivation for the Ellerslie players and coaching staff. Ellerslie AFC warmly welcome Hamilton to Michaels Ave, for the second time in three weeks, it will be great to see the two teams who are quite evenly matched lock horns again on the turf at Michaels Ave. A quick look at the history of the Kate Sheppard Cup shows that Hamilton’s amazing run to the final last year was their best finish in the cup, while Ellerslie having made three finals in a row (winning one) in the early 2000’s have struggled to make an impact on the cup since then.

If we look into the history between Wanderers and Ellerslie in the cup a bit further it turns out if you eliminate 2020 where the cup wasn’t played due to Covid that Hamilton have knocked Ellerslie out of the cup in the previous two tournaments, so yet another reason for the Ponies to be up for this game. Regardless of the result it will be great to catch up after the game in the clubrooms with some hot pizza thanks to our sponsor Sals Remuera and some cold drinks from the club bar!

Cheers Tim Adams CHAIRMAN - ELLERSLIE AFC

14 The weather on Sunday packed in and we were left with grey skies, drizzle and a bit of wind, mind you the Farm is normally a pretty windswept kind of place, so maybe that was to be expected. The Reserves rocked up ready to get their season back underway, with the game scheduled on field 4 which was in decent condition, maybe with a touch too much length on the grass. The Reserves started strong with a Mia Collins goal within 3 minutes, however Suburbs had a few returning stars in their team and Annie Byrne put her name on the scoresheet in the 12th minute to level the game.

Ellerslie’s Sarah Jessup grabbed the lead for the Ponies again as she struck in the 33rd min, a goal which gave the Ponies a halftime lead. However a devastating 3 min period inside 10 mins of the second half saw Suburbs score twice and take the lead, the Ponies stunned but tried to respond and had a number of opportunities to level the game. As often happens in Football the team with the momentum gets picked off and this is exactly what happened here as Suburbs grabbed a 77th min goal to effectively lock away the points. Ellerslie did throw numbers forward to try and claw their way back into the game but the Suburbs backline held strong and gave Ellerslie their 4th loss of the season. Not ideal but still more than half the season left for the Ponies to pick up the pieces and make a run for the top. For the First Team results have not been much better, a morale boosting 2-0 win last week against Hamilton did give us a bit of momentum, but everyone knew coming to Madills Farm was going to be a big challenge. The Ponies came into the game with a pretty much unchanged team, only the return of Kim Oosterbeek who was returning from illness and took Anna Howden’s place on the bench, that meant Ellerslie were still missing Leigh Aitken and Tayla Hawes from the team.

Suburbs themselves had a few players out, but they still fielded a strong team – including Tayla O’Brien making her 100th appearance for the Lilywhites, an amazing feat – Congrats Tayla. From kickoff this looked like it was gonna be a tough battle between two teams prepared to get the ball down and play, with Ellerslie getting some pass combinations going right from kickoff – but 15mins in and Suburbs had opened the scoring as the broke through the middle of the field and Deven Jackson was able to slot home past Petra who could do nothing to stop it. It looked to me that conceding shook the Ponies a little and they stopped playing as much and invited Suburbs to put on the pressure and it was little surprise when the score was doubled when a cross from the right perfectly picked out Juliette Lucas who took a touch and passed the ball into the net. So 25 mins in and it’s 2-0 and truth be told by the time it was halftime I’m not sure how it was still only 2, the Suburbs girls had stepped up the intensity and pressure and was it not for a combination of some individual

15 defensive efforts from players and keeper and some poor finishing then we could have seen a much larger gap come the break. Previously halftime has been a point of strength for the Ponies, with coaching Ryan, Callum and Ian able to find something different or refocusing the players to get more out of them in the second half – Ryan and his team would have been looking for a simular impact in this game, yes the Ponies had been outplayed for the majority of the first half, but one goal and we were back in this.

Unfortunately this was not one of these times as the Lilywhites came out and immediately stuck their foots on the Ponies throats and scored a goal from a play which looked suspiciously offside – as it turned out it looked suspicious because it was offside and Ryan who was battling for his team was able to ask the referee over to discuss the play with the Assistant Referee who after a min or so of discussing it had realised their mistake and ruled the goal out. Not that the Ponies could celebrate for too long as within 120 seconds Suburbs had found the net again, this time no flag could save them as Rebekah Van Dort scored in a scramble in the box. The Ponies still reeling from conceding essentially 2 goals in 3 mins were then punished again in the 57th min as Juliette Lucas grabbed her second goal of the game, with a fierce strike that Petra was able to get a hand to but couldn’t keep out of the net.

Suburbs had a final great chance to make it 5 when one of their players was brought down in the box, but the referee perhaps feeling a little sorry for the Ponies awarded a free kick on the edge of the box instead, with Petra able to deal with the shot on goal. At 4-0 it seemed Suburbs relaxed a little, or maybe the Ponies snapped out of their nightmare and they started to put some passes together, Britney managed to break a tackle and have a shot and Anita had started to get inbehind the home teams backline for a couple of half chances. Cameo’s from Jemma McCormick and Hollie Leona energised the Ponies as they searched for something from the game, and with both teams going down to 10 players (injuries for players after the last sub windows had been used) for the last 10 mins there was space to be found. Alas it wasn’t to be and another scoreless game in the record books for the Ponies, but with a big cup game at home this coming weekend against a Hamilton side that won’t die trying, they have plenty to work for.

TWEET OF THE WEEK

Bit of a different tweet of the week this week, but one that is massively important. We know it takes a lot to talk about this kind of stuff, so we applaud Grace for stepping up and being so honest. We hope her actions help anyone else who is struggling to speak out and get the support they deserve. #Checkonamate
