Gidday everyone and welcome back to another weekend of footy action at “The Ave” This weekend we have a number of marquee games, including the NRFL clash against Forrest Hill and our Women’s Championship derby between the Reserves and The Rebels. Firstly please welcome Forrest Hill Milford to Michaels Ave, it’s been a while since they visited us – the 2015 season infact when they won promotion to the Premier League by storming to the league title with 51 points. (as an aside Ellerslie finished 4th that season and actually beat FHM twice – the only team to do so) – it’s a big game for both teams again, a win for Ellerslie here could be enough to lift us out of the relegation mix, while FHM having lost a few players will be keen to get 3 points and keep pressure on Waiheke in second place. Also a big potential congrats to Alex Howard from FHM who if he makes an appearance in the game today will be making his 100th First Team appearance for FHM – great milestone! For the Reserves in recent weeks it’s been awesome to see young players from U16’s and U17’s get opportunities – we have a great set of coaches working in our youth programs (both boys and girls) so it’s great to see these players step up to senior football and show they are good enough! Keep up the good work everyone! Sunday we have a big clash between the Ellerslie Women’s Reserves and the Ellerslie Rebels who both play in the Championship division – in the first round the Reserves took a shock victory and so the Rebels who are higher up the table will want to set the record straight – should be a good game, 1pm at Michaels Ave. Player behaviour is on the radar at the moment from the World Cup so I think it’s timely to remind players to abide by the Ellerslie AFC code of conduct and the NZF code of conduct, particularly in regards to sideline behaviour and referee abuse – two things we would love to see eliminated or at the very least reduced. We have the women’s fundraiser on Friday night - so it might have been all done and dusted by the time you read this, but if not come on down at 6:30pm and enjoy the quiz night - it’s very well organised so it will be a great night and we have a great professional quiz host running it for us - thanks to our friends Believe it or Not quizzes for their help! Join us up in the clubrooms after your games this weekend for a cold beer or just to check out some World Cup game on replay on the big screen!!

North Shore vs Oratia Utd

Allen Hill @ 3pm

Interesting week at Allen Hill HQ with a massive list of incoming players just prior to the transfer window, including several from both Fencibles and Forrest Hill – signs that the Devonport based club are keen to knock Waiheke out of second. Then came the bombshell that coach Paul Harkness is leaving at the end of the season, all signs point to a Cinderella type story ending with Shore clinching a promotion spot – time will tell. Oratia on the other hand are equally as desperate to prove a point but for opposite reasons – They can still save themselves but they need to start getting points soon and their run in looks interesting: Fencibles, Manurewa, Coast, Waitemata, FHM, Waiheke and MAP in there somewhere as well.

PICK: Hard to see Shore tripping over this one, but instability can disrupt so will be interesting to see how Shore handle this last week. Fencibles vs Mt Albert Ponsonby

William Green @ 3pm

One of two games of the round – this fixture based on the table looks like a ho hum 4th vs 6th but the winner of this game looks like they will have a real shot at chasing down Waiheke – with only 2 points between Shore, MAP, FHM, and Fencies the loser could be left with a lot of work to do to catch up. Fencies have lost a few players in the transfer window dispite their efforts to recruit so it will be interesting to see how strong they are for the remainder of the season. The Anderson Park faithful are enjoying life at the moment with a good run in the cup and sitting ok in the league, but a win will be the perfect way to keep their spirits high!

PICK: Not sure why this game is not at Riverhills – don’t think the turf will give enough of an advantange to Fencies, MAP by 1 Manurewa vs Tauranga

Memorial Park @ 3pm

A relegation battle - Rewa who have threatened to improve all season face off against a Tauranga team who have failed to impress that much but keep on picking up points when they need them! Both teams will want points here, particularly Manurewa who want to claw back some of the deficit on Tauranga, Waitemata and Ellerslie.

PICK: I think this has a 2-2 draw written all over it! Hibiscus Coast vs Melville Utd

Stanmore Bay @ 3pm

Based on recent form this looks like a no contest - the rumour is Coast’s key players are in Russia at the world cup, but I don’t think we will see the upsets we have seen there in this fixture, Melville have a key

strength this season - they can lose ugly and they have done that a couple of times this season already. My only concern for them is if they lose players like Aaron Scott, Wade Molony, Mark Jones to injury they all of a sudden look pretty young.

PICK: Don’t need to be a genius to pick this one - Melville by a couple (at least)

Waitemata FC vs Waiheke Utd

McLeod Park @ 3pm

West vs East - another tough game for Waitemata as they take on promotion hopefuls Waiheke, after losing to FHM last week and seeing Ellerslie beat Oratia they are still not safe from the relegation battle. Waiheke on the other hand, can they catch Melville? Do they even want to play Premier League next season? Who is paying for all those players? And can they even field a reserves team next season? Questions… lots of them.

PICK: Waiheke will win, they have class all over the park, but is there any point?

The Lotto NRFL Men’s Division One is set for an exciting second round of fixtures as only eight points separate second from sixth. With Melville currently leading the charge, nine points clear at the top of the table, the rest of the league is set for a five-way battle between Waiheke United, North Shore United, Mt Albert-Ponsonby, Forrest Hill and Fencibles United. But how does that square up in the mind of Fencies head coach, Neil Sykes? Currently sixth on the table with a very youthful team, the newly -promoted East Auckland outfit has plenty of potential going forward, but a challenge lies ahead as the Howick-based side look to push for the final hurdle with the challenge of MAP looming over their shoulders. “There’s a lot of good teams in the division, there’s not a lot of difference between the top and the bottom sides. There are plenty of committed and talented players in this division” Sykes said.

“I don’t think there’s a major difference between some of the teams in the Premier League and teams that we’re playing every week, it’s competitive and it’s honest football.” “MAP as a team are like that, they’ll be up for the battle, well organised and they’ve got some decent players as well, so we know what we’re up against and we know what’s at stake.” “We will prepare the same way as we have for other games, we’ll work hard as a group and hopefully we’ll be more clinical in both boxes which will help us take the three points.”

14

With a youthful side at the hands of Sykes, the focus for Fencibles is to build on the consistency of results, with the side dipping in form after two straight defeats to fellow promotion contenders, Waiheke United and relegation battlers Tauranga City FC. “That’s the kind of conundrum you have when you’ve got a young squad, it’s all about the consistency” Sykes said. “We had a great run at the start and over the last few weeks we’ve maybe not had the results that we had at the start of the season and consistency has cost us a little bit.” “Our players will learn from it this year, it’ll be really good for their development as a team and as individuals and we’ll just keep trying to produce good performances and we’ll see where we end up.” Although, impressing quite well this season with a young side, one player’s goal scoring credentials have made a stunning impact on the sides progress this season as 23-Year-Old Jordan Kalk has found the back of the net on six different occasions. “He’s got electric pace, which is great for us going forward. He’s also got a goal scoring touch and can finish in different ways” Sykes said. “He really fits well into the team and the club as he’s got those values that we think are so important; hard work, loyalty and commitment to his mates. Plus he brings that little bit of quality as well, so he’s done really well, and he’s made a big impact for us this season.” The match against MAP will kick off at 3pm at William Green Domain.

Did you know? The last time these two teams met was in 2011 in NRFL Div 2 and MAP took overall honours with a 3-0 win at home and a 2-2 draw away. MAP would go on to win the league that season while Fencibles missed out narrowly in third place, just three points behind Ngaruawahia.

Ellerslie AFC vs Oratia Utd Parrs Park 30th June 2018 NRFL Div 1 Reserves @ 12:30pm NRFL Div 1 @ 3pm A season defining set of fixtures for both Ellerslie First Team and Reserves for completely different reasons, but a trip to Parrs is always a challenge no matter what the scenario – see last years game for a prime example of that. Reserves kicked off our away day with their fixture on the turf at Parrs Park on a crisp sunny winters day – perfect conditions for football! A few changes in the team as well with GK being the problem position of the day as Lloyd was away on work, Jason was injured and all of our young keepers either injured or at a school game. So we had to ask the team for someone to put their hand up, and it was no surprise that Grant Marshall took the challenge on board – more on that later…

18

Back into the starting team for this game were Victor, Luke MacKay, and Adam Barkley after a long injury layoff. We also continued our youth development policy with Nick

Shaw, Alex Arnold and Taylor Smith all coming into the team from the u17’s. We also saw the return to the team for Joe Junge who played an impressive second half cameo! The game started well for us and very early on we were 2-0 up thanks to a great third man run from Adam Barkley who finished off his 1v1 easily and then a very technical goal to Josh Lai as he hit a side volley that dipped under the cross bar after a very good cross from Leon. There were a few dicey moments at the back as Marshy settled into his role – a couple of dodgy moments when playing out had Ian the coach and Marshy the assistant coach with some tactical problems to resolve! At the other end though things were pretty rosy as Karar grabbed a poachers goal after being the first one to a loose ball in the 20th min and then slammed a very nice low hard shot on the break past the Tia GK only 5 minutes later to increase the score to 4-0. Tia took advantage of a bit of miscommunication at the back just prior to halftime to score their goal and ruin Marshy’s clean sheet! At halftime we took off Adam Barkley who in his first game back was very sharp but feeling a little sore so no risks were taken there and Josh Lai who had first team duties was given a break. In their places we brought on Joe and Connor Lewis into our forward line!

Because of all the changes the second half got a bit scrappy and while we had some chances we just couldn’t put them away until Joe got his first in the 73rd min and not wanting to miss a beat in his comeback game grabbed a second in the 95th min of the game. Second half appearances from Alex Arnold (a semi-seasoned Reserves player now) and debuts for Nick Shaw and Taylor Smith was pleasing to see and all three players handled themselves well – a testament to their work with the U17’s and Seb this season.

That win puts some pressure on Fencibles who still lead the league on goal difference (and a game in hand) from Ellerslie and Waiheke sit in 3rd just 4 points back. A big game this weekend as we take on middle of the table Forrest Hill Milford who have proved tricky and Fencibles face up against a MAP side who are good enough to beat anyone on their day, good luck to MAP!! For the first team game there were also a bunch of changes as Rowan and Denish were unavailable and Fred and Terry shuffled the lineup a little as well. We welcomed back Denny Twigg to the starting lineup and Lex to the bench both after long injury breaks. The surface at Parrs Park on their #1 was in great condition, clearly the club takes great pride in looking after the surface and they have done a stellar job – easily one of the best pitches, probably only behind Gower Park. It’s great to see so many superb fields, credit to council and their team for sand-basing these grounds! The game itself was a curious mix of cagey and open – with both teams preferring to spend little time with the ball in their backline or deep in midfield – the preferred option was to get the ball forward as quickly as possible, Oratia preferring to play a little more on the counter and Ellerslie a little more front foot. The end result was a bunch of chances, or almost chances throughout the game – Ellerslie with a couple in the first half, most notably to Art who ended up with a 1v1 with the keeper early in the first half but the ball wouldn’t sit for him so he tried a lob over the keeper which went just over the bar – Alex Clark with our other chance from a free kick that the Tia keeper saved well. The home side were not without chances as well – a couple of very good close range blocks Ellerslie defenders stopped them from scoring, the second ball from set piece play looking particularly strong for the Green Machine.

20

Halftime the focus was very much on reacting to second phase play, as the game was being well contested for any partially secured ball and Oratia def were getting the better of that kind of play.

Second half was more of the same, I think from my position behind the goal Ellerslie were attacking it looked like we were more dominant in the second half, but for large periods we didn’t have the right key to unlock the Oratia’s door of defence. A couple of subs entered the game in the shape of Lex and Josh Lai (for Denny and Dylan respectively) and it was Lex who all of a sudden made us look more dangerous and it came as no surprise when he opened the scoring with deft flick header after some good work by Art in the box and a dinked ball towards the back post. That goal spurred Oratia into action and the tempo of the game went up several notches, Mr Black the referee however did a good job throughout the game and while he had to dish out a few cards as the game came to it’s conclusion he was always in control of the fixture. Josh Lai created the second goal after he was released down the left and chopped back onto his right foot and slid a ball across the box to Sam who slammed a low shot into the back of the net, the keeper got a good chunk of the shot but the power of the shot was enough that he couldn’t keep it out. At 2-0 Ellerslie felt comfortable we could see it out and despite a few anxious moments we were able to defend the onslaught from a desperate Oratia side who to be fair to them played pretty well, defended with heart and attacked with a clear game plan in mind – sometimes things just don’t fall for you. The three points however was valuable for Ellerslie as it takes off a bit of pressure for the next couple of games which are almost exclusively against teams chasing promotion spots, starting with FHM who have had a bit of a rough patch of form by their standards this weekend at 5pm at Michaels Ave!

Those Spanish Blues Ok little bit of a stretch to say we played like Spain against Norwest, but we certainly played well enough to avoid a 2-0 loss. However when you don’t take your chances then the football gods always have a surprise up their sleeves. Norwest were good, let’s not take that away from them - particularly tactically as they worked out where we wanted to play and shut down those options with some tinkering from their coach on the sideline - they also took their chances when presented and when we went 1 behind that really put the pressure on us. Not the greatest result but it’s still such a tight league that anyone bar maybe Coast (and Manukau) are still in a shout to win it - however Onehunga need to drop some points soon if that statement is going to hold true for much longer. After the game we were finally able to celebrate Tove’ and her 100th Women’s First Team game which she earned against Manukau - a massive effort and she joins fellow 100 Club members Deb, Hanna and Anna! Looking forward another bye this weekend - which is really hurting our continuity, but AFF don’t seem to care about this competition too much so let’s not waste our breath too much there. We have Hibiscus Coast at home in our next game, which is a must win for us if we still want to be in the race for the top and after Coast smashed us in the first round, some payback is due!!
