Welcome to Ellerslie AFC and another edition of “The Ave” – today we are looking forward to hosting Maurico Rojas and his Hibiscus Coast team to Michaels Ave. Mauricio worked with a couple of our players when he was coaching Auckland United in the then ASB Youth League.

His Hibiscus Coast team come into today’s fixture after a good win last week against Mt Albert Ponsonby and come in as firm favourites in a game we desperately need some points from. I’m sure the contest will be exciting to watch and fingers crossed we can end up after 90 odd minutes with a point or three more in our ledger. For the Reserves they continue to be front runners which is a hard spot as every other team wants to knock them over and Coast will be no different today as they have provided good contests in the past and with Josh Precious in goal they have an outstanding keeper to call on. Cup football has been the focus of last weekend as we had a few teams victorious in their respective cups, with AFF Champs who are the holders and Shotaholics qualifying for the next round of the AFF Knockout Cup, while our Women’s Conference and Conference Reserves teams progressed to the next round of the AFF Women’s Cup in contrasting styles (check out page 42 for a little more info on that). The Men’s Reserves won their nailbiter against Melville with a last minute goal to qualify for the NRFL Reserves Cup (top tier) Quarter-Finals – on the flip side our Women’s First Team were handed a tough draw against NRFL Premier League side Glenfield in the NZ Women’s Knockout Cup, a bit of a learning curve in that game but a valuable one for our long term progression. Off the field we are in the middle of implementing a bunch of changes to the club’s coaching programs as part of the review recently completed by Fred de Jong – these changes are all aimed at developing the best young players we can, while still focusing on enjoyment at all levels of this great game – so keep your eyes out for these changes over the next couple of months and rolling into next season. For those at a loss this Sunday head across the Motorway to Waikaraka Park to watch our Women’s Conference teams from 10:45am as they play Onehunga Sports in what should be two great games. Last Word: It’s hard not to get wrapped up in the Lion’s drama at the moment and we are no different so on Saturday evenings after football we will have the games LIVE and LOUD on the big screen – enjoy!

Cheers Tim Adams Senior Club Chairman - ELLERSLIE AFC

It's been a couple of weeks since our last program and there have been some shock results hopefully we can give some insights into these games so you can make up your own mind! Melville Utd vs Franklin Utd Gower Park @ 2:45pm Mighty Melville have been super impressive in some games this season, mostly against as they would put it the "Mug" teams - but interestingly against the other members of the "top 4" they have struggled. Franklin for their part had a impressive draw against Oratia last weekend which may give them some confidence for future fixtures - but I doubt they are expecting much from this game. PREDICTION: I don't think Melville will run up some of the scores we have been seeing, i think a 5-1 win will be enough.

North Shore vs Waitemata FC Allen Hill Stadium @ 2:45pm Tom and his Shore side will want to see a reaction after they were surprisingly held to a draw against Metro FC last weekend - they did bounce back with a win in the cup but this league game gives them a chance to keep some pressure on the promotion race. Waitemata are cruising for a side who pre-season was considered a favourite for relegation, Bob will want them to keep focused and stay well away from getting drawn into that lower table scrap. PREDICTION: Shore to nick it, 2-1 Mt Albert Ponsonby vs Manukau City Anderson Park @ 3pm Interesting timing for this game as the rumour mill is spinning that there are multiple people heading south from MAP to the new Kevin Fallon Project - our sources can confirm that there is infact a pending transfer for Sharvan Sharma from MAP to Manukau City, a transfer that is unlikely to be approved before this weekends game. Odds on a few more following him, including his brother? not sure. PREDICTION: Manukau look the goods Oratia Utd vs Tauranga City Parrs Park @ 3pm These two lower midtable teams lock horns in the hope of getting those three points to pull them away the bottom three clubs - a draw here would really do neither of them any favours. Tia come into this game after beating Ellerslie and then drawing to Franklin while Tauranga had an impressive 4-0 win over Ellerslie last time out. PREDICTION: Not sure here so will go for a draw Ellerslie AFC vs Hibiscus Coast AFC Michaels Ave @ 5pm Saturday night football is back at "The Ave" after a pretty lengthy absence - and it's a crucial game for the hosts as they need to pull away from the bottom two clubs who face tough games this weekend as well. Hibiscus have done well in recent games and will come into this game keen to keep their run going - there have been some epic games between these two sides recently with games at Michaels Ave in particular being close affairs. PREDICTION: Have to pick Ellerslie, a narrow win by a solitary goal, preferably with a clean sheet involved.

10

Western Springs AFC vs Metro FC Seddon Fields @ 5:15pm Our last game of the round kicks off a local derby game - the first one of the year as the first round game between these two teams remains unplayed due to a mixture of lighting and weather issues. This also happens to be the current league leaders vs bottom of the table. Metro however will be bouyed by their draw against North Shore last time out, Springs on the other hand suffered a shock loss (their first of the season) to Project Kevin Fallon and will be keen to bounce back from that. PREDICTION: Had springs not lost last week I could see them taking this too easy, but now could be anything up from 3-0 to the hosts

Bay of Plenty goals for locals Ellerslie vs Tauranga City – Links Ave, 3rd June @ 3pm We always knew this was going to be a much tougher game than our opening game of the season – against a Tauranga side that are traditionally decent at home and who had the benefit of the whole first round of preparation as opposed to their rushed start to the season. It also turned out that Colm Kenny who didn’t play against us in the first round was a massive handful as well – playing the perfect target-man role for the home side. One of the features of these match reports in the second half of the season will be looking at how our opposition teams have changed since we played them last – so for Tauranga just how different were they? On the face of it in this game McGregor, How, Irvine, and Culpepper didn’t feature in this game but did in the reverse fixture (although we did spot How injured/suspended on the sideline).

For us we were forced into a couple of changes due to injury and unavailability as Jordan Oosterhof was on resting duties per Physio’s orders and Dan Culpan was unavailable due to study commitments. That meant spots on the bench for the first time this season for Alex Clark who was back from College Football and impressive Reserves players Conrad Benefield and Rowan Corbett.

24

Sadly (for us) the game started in an all too familiar way as Tauranga grabbed an early goal which popped the handbrake on what was a decent start to the game for us – after that goal we looked like we lost a bit of focus and struggled for the rest of the half, but not before conceding again after falling to a Tauranga press deep in our defensive third.

At halftime we made a few tweaks and spoke to the lads about getting an early goal and getting back into the game, and there were some chances, particularly later in the second half but unfortunately we only started to really threaten once we had already conceded two more 2nd half goals. 10min’s into the second half Tauranga delivered their 3rd and their most impressive player Colm Kenny sealed the scoring with their 4th only 5 minutes later. Tauranga did drop the tempo a little after that and we did pick our game back up and like was mentioned above we had our best attacking period between the 60th and 90th minute marks. We also saw Conrad come into the side for his debut appearance at this level, Rowan also made his bow slightly after that and both players made impacts on the game in the limited minutes they had on the field. That result leaves us well and truly in the relegation fight and with a massive game against Coast looming – Brennen picked up the Man of the Match gong after putting in a lot of effort down the right flank, and looked most likely to pick up an assist. We have a lot of faith in the team, so we go back to the drawing board at training and we hope for a full on performance at home under lights against Coast this coming weekend! It’s a Roadtrip! Reserves vs Tauranga City – Links Ave, 3rd June @ 12:30pm Our Roadtripp’n weekend kicked off with the Reserves meeting at Michaels Ave at the ungodly hour of 7am to try and make sure we didn’t get derailed by Queen’s Birthday weekend traffic on our way down to Tauranga. As you can see in the photo on the left it was far to dark to be considering football, but the lads (mostly) knew that leaving at this time would give us the best possible prep to for another crucial encounter. Thanks to Pegasus Takanini by the way for letting us hire your excellent vans!

Def worth popping in and seeing Marlana and George for your rental car and van needs!! The trip down was pretty uneventful as we stopped a couple of times on our way, first at the AutoBahn just south of Papakura where we picked up Andy Dalton (entirely on accident) – a small detour followed as he left his car at Drury United’s carpark to collect on our way back (more on that later). Then we stopped just before getting to Tauranga, to relieve ourselves and get a few supplies for the game and afterwards – John managed to leave his phone in Countdown but luckily a kind staff member chased him down and saved him, there is more to that story but that’s best not written down!!

So we rolled into Links Ave to a lush looking ground, and we got the surprising news that the Reserves would be playing on the #1 field, which was awesome news as I don’t think in all the times we have played down here that the Reserves have ever played on the #1 so that was a rare treat. The lads used their extra prep time to ease themselves into the build-up as they mucked around with a ball on the field and discussed the days events so far – spirits were high and they got stuck into the warm up when it commenced and you could tell the lads were well up for the contest. Tauranga looked a much different side to the one we played in the first round, a few more older guys in the team and a handy looking Brazilian playmaker who sat in the home sides engine room. However they were not prepared for the pressure we were about to put on as Ben’s confident reserves team started with a hiss and a roar with Alex W, Joe and John all threatening early as Alex Clark (in his first game back from College) Andy Dalton (first game back from injury) and Victor provided the ammunition.

32

Early on Tauranga looked capable on the counter attack and from set play and there were a couple of nervy moments, particularly one incident that involved Lloyd assisting Stefan to head

the ball away by using his fists in the back of his head to propel him towards the ball – fear not as both survived and Lloyd still had his clean sheet intact. Prior to that Joe had opened the scoring with a neat little header on the 17th minute – that was the highlight of the half, alongside Tavis and his WWE style takedown of the keeper who was shielding the ball out – pure comedy all round! Halftime came and a few changes rolled in as Conrad and Alex C went off to First Team duty and were replaced by Josh Torrens (in his first game back from injury) and Rowan Corbett. It only took 11 minutes in the second half for us to double our score when Stefan rose highest from a corner and popped home his first goal of the season, much to the delight of the away fans and players! That sort of signalled the start of the floodgates opening as Karar was next on the scoresheet with his first of the season after having just come on – he bravely nipped in ahead of Alex W in the box and pushed his shot home with excellent composure. It was then that Tauranga unfortunately had another setback as their Brazilian play-maker who had been harried and harassed most of the game (in the first half by Alex Clark and in the second by John Murphy) kicked out at John who had conceded a free kick – the referee had no option other than showing the crimson card and send Fuentes off for an early shower. For some reason on his way off the field he decided to come and pick an argument with Lloyd which was interesting to see – to be fair it was probably the most action Lloyd saw in the second 45. That sending off sort of galvanised Tauranga and they had a strong defensive spell following the dismissal – however Alex Witteveen who had been a handful for them all day was hungry for some goal action and he struck twice in the final 10 minutes of the game to make the final score 5-0 and while we could have finished some more, it was still a little flattering and didn’t reflect the efforts of the home side. Another good result and plenty to be positive about heading into the cup game on Monday against League rivals Melville. TAURANGA CITY: 1-Edlin, 14-Fauvel, 2-Bromfield, 12-Waterhouse, 16-Z.Bell, 6-Fuentes, 10-Howe, 7-M.Bell, 3Larraburu, 13-Gibson, 4-Smith Subs not used: 11-Jones, 15-Millichia Goals: none Cards: none Sending Offs: Fuentes (70’) ELLERSLIE AFC: 1-Huysmans, 38-Barbosa (32-Fletcher 74’), 43-Milosevic (33-Rathbone 65’), 17-Benefield (13-Torrens 45’), 21-Gravatt, 30-Ganescu, 6-Dalton (27-Sohrabi 65’), 37-Clark (40-Corbett 45’), 4-Murphy, 44-Junge, 11-Witteveen Subs not used: none Goals: Witteveen (81’, 89’), Junge (17’), Milosevic (56’), Sohrabi (67’) Cards: Gravatt (37’)

Reserves vs Melville (Cup) – Gower Park, 5th June @ 12noon So with a much changed side to our league game on Saturday due to exams and illness we headed back to the Waikato and we were excited to get our cup campaign underway. When we drew Melville we were a little disappointed as we knew they were a quality side and we were really keen to test ourselves against some quality Premier League opposition, and we had to be wary that Melville could cost us that chance. Still it’s good to play a quality team than an average one so what unfolded was a very good contest and a game both sides can be proud of taking part in. For us we welcomed Mark, Freddie, Monju and young Luke MacKay into the team to replace Conrad, Alex C, Josh T, Alex W, Joe, Andy D, and John who were all unavailable for a mixture of reasons – this meant our bench only consisted of 2 out of the maximum of 5 allowed substitutes so the players on the park had to really bank on doing the job for us. The game started well as we sat off a little bit and picked and choose our time to press – wary of Melville getting in behind our backline, while Rowan who was playing in his favoured centre forward spot was combining well with Monju who was in the 10 role. It wasn’t that partnership that lead to our first goal however as Stefan who has found a rich vein of form recently did an outrageous turn on halfway past two strikers before threading a perfect through ball to Rowan who was able to outpace the defence and slot the opening goal of the game. We continued to press on and put Melville under pressure but they always looked likely from a counter and there were a couple of nervous moments as they hit us on swift breaks – as the half wore on they looked more likely and eventually they found an opportunity to tempting to pass up with a free shot from just outside the box on the right hand side and the player made no mistake with a very powerful shot into the top right hand corner of the goal. 1-1.

At halftime we supported each other to keep our spirits up and trust each other in the game – we fixed a few things tactically and headed out for the second half. Within 7 minutes of the restart we were handed a challenge to deal with as Melville grabbed their second goal as they breached us in the middle of the park and despite Lloyds valiant efforts to stop the goal the home side took the lead.

34

Melville looked like they might be able to shut up shop for the remainder of the game,

however Rowan was having a stormer of a game and was consistently drawing fouls from the home side, one of which proved very costly for them as Mouncher committed his 2nd bookable offence in the 72nd minute and left his side with only 10 men to defend the last 18 minutes of the game. By this stage Ben Fletcher and Luke MacKay had been subbed on with both providing moments of quality in the tackle and in possession respectively – It was Ben who with 10 minutes to go moved to centre back to allow Stefan to play as a target man upfront which saw almost immediate results as his presence upfront created enough disruption that Rowan could poke home with his head a cross/shot from Luke at the back post – a slight period of confusion erupted as we considered if there was or was not extra time – once confirmation was through that it was straight to penalties we left Stefan upfront as our focal attacking point. It was a plan that paid off eventually in the last minute of time as Tavis got down the left side and delivered a good cross for Stefan to glance a header past the despairing Melville keeper to take the lead the cup tie.

Both teams agreed the game was played in good spirits and was a very good tactical contest that just came down to small moments of quality – Melville were gracious in defeat and showed we were very right to be wary of them. So we move on in the cup and we are really hoping to draw Three Kings who sit unbeaten in the NRFL Premier Reserves league and would provide an excellent contest. MELVILLE UTD: 1-Campbell, 2-McMullan (20-Sutcliffe 90’), 3-Williams, 5-Mouncher, 6-Katesmark, 7-Bayliss, 8-Olsen, 9Raynel (15-Oliver 81’), 10-Glenister, 11-Wisnewski, 12-Shaw (16-Viviani 52’) Goals: Bayliss (40’), Shaw (52’) Cards: Williams (27’), Mouncher (12’), Shaw (52’) Sending Offs: Mouncher (72’) ELLERSLIE AFC: 1-Huysmans, 33-Rathbone, 21-Gravatt, 43-Milosevic, 16-Ljungberg, 35-Thompson (32-Fletcher 70’), 30-Ganescu, 26-Shohei, 38-Barbosa, 27-Sohrabi (7-MacKay 55’), 40-Corbett Goals: Corbett (21’, 80’), Milosevic (90’) Cards: Gravatt (40’), Thompson (30’)

NORTHERN KNOCKOUT CUP

REMAINING TEAMS

Champs (Defending Champions) got through the first round by beating Ellerslie Boylan (from AFF Div 1) last weekend with a 6-1 victory that saw the Champs keeper save a penalty and then save the rebound shot with his face. That’s commitment! Shotaholics progressed to this round with a 7-1 win over Western Springs Dirty Houdini’s who play in AFF Div 8 - they celebrated the home win up in the clubrooms afterwards as they look forward to the next round! AFF WOMEN’S KNOCKOUT CUP

REMAINING TEAMS

Women’s Conference Reserves progressed to the next round in style as they won 11-0 against a spirited and brave Onehunga Sports Div 2/3 team, one of the highlights of the game was seeing some U16’s girls play and play well!

Women’s Conference progressed to the next round by way of default as their opposition Lynn Avon who are in the same division as the Ellerslie side defaulted to concentrate on their league form.
