WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE An exciting Women’s Conference season so far continues as we host Northland FC at Michaels Ave this weekend. Northland’s women’s team have had decent results so far and as a club as a whole they look like they are thriving which is great as a regional rep team, a great concept for the North and it’s football - It would be great to see the same philosophy put in place for some of the “regional” teams in Auckland who at times just seem to be another team paying players. The Kate Sheppherd Cup handed us a tricky draw - #5 on Coach Ryan Shiffman’s list of teams we didn’t want, but it will be an exciting test for us to see how far we have progressed, after a decent game against Forrest Hill last season. In the AFF Women’s Knockout Cup the Ellerslie First Team, Reserves and Zamantix Rovers have been given a BYE into the next round, while the Rebels are drawn against a Div 4 Western Springs team - that game is next week at home at 11am (at this stage). Thanks to everyone who comes and supports the women’s teams - if you want to follow the score but can’t make it then jump on twitter (@EllerslieAFC) and chuck us a follow for Live Score updates of the game.

WELCOME TO THE AVE

TODAYS MATCH OFFICIALS First Team Referee: Feleti Koloamatangi

FROM THE DUGOUT Welcome to Ellerslie’s Women’s Conference match as they come up against the geographically furthest team in the competition, Northland. Ellerslie came out with a strong start, winning 4 from 4, but has struggled to find the back of the net in the previous two games where they drew 0-0 against Norwest and picked up their first loss of the season to Hibiscus Coast 0-2. Northland have had a mixed bag of results but seem to be finding form with a draw and a win in the past two matches. Today’s match will be important to both sides so expect to see a great game. From the coaching side we have spent a lot of time this week working on areas we believed have kept us from finding the back of the net. Hopefully the work on intelligent movement in the final area of the field will yield more goal scoring opportunities for the team. Last season’s home match against Northland ended as a 4-3 come from behind victory for Ellerslie. We will look to channel that team’s desire and passion to compete in this fixture.

Have fun, Ryan Shiffman

FROM THE DUGOUT

ELLERSLIE VS HIBISCUS COAST Stanmore Bay Park is probably one of the most idyllic places to play football in Auckland, even on a windy and sometimes wet day it’s still a picture compared to a lot of inner city grounds – so it makes no sense that this footballing Garden of Eden holds such a fearsome record against both the Women’s and the Men’s First Teams. In 2018 in our 2nd game of the season the Women’s First Team lost 4-1 while the Men’s First Team recorded just their 2nd win in their last 5 games in Whangaparaoa – I don’t have the Women’s stats available for previous seasons but they were not good reading I’m told. So this season an early three way battle has appeared at the top of the table with Ellerslie, Hibiscus and Norwest looking early favourites for the Championship with Central and Northland just sitting behind – which means this game at Stanmore Bay against a revitalised Hibiscus Coast was a massive game this early in the season. We had not known much about the Hibiscus team – they were probably the ones team we didn’t know much about, we had done research on all the other teams – so we prepared for a tough game and selected a very strong team albeit missing Deb who is still nursing a back injury and Erin and Tayla were away. The last couple of games we have not controlled the game or passed the ball as well as we can and that has affected our ability to put pressure on our opposition – we still have enough raw ability to create chances but when a team is defending well we need to starve the other team of the ball for periods of the game to build pressure and look to exploit a mistake from that pressure.

Coast had a very strong team, particularly disciplined defensively and a strong spine and a good attacking trio upfront – It’s hard to see them dropping too many points for the rest of the season which means we need to keep getting wins to keep up the pressure on them. Lisa Kemp who was a standout player for Coast last season grabbed two first half goals in this contest – one of them being a very good finish at the back post on the half volley as Coast raided down our right hand side – a second goal which was from a freak bit of play that I still don’t understand and can’t explain doubled the lead. Ellerslie came out in the second half and were better and dominated the ball better but still not enough – scoring chances were created but nothing super clear cut, but I think had we seen a bit of x-factor finishing or a goal from a half chance I think we would have found another to get back to level terms – Coast I think could sense this and they put a massive effort defensively and on the counter attack to make sure they took a win and it’s hard to begrudge them the victory based on the amount of heart they showed. A setback for sure for Ellerslie but not the end of the story – a big game this weekend against Northland and then a key clash against Norwest with a Kate Shepphard Cup game against Hamilton Wanderers inbetween means we the opportunity to turn around our little mini slump with some good results that I know we are capable of – hard work on the training pitch will make a big difference this week!
