Welcome back to “The Ave” for another action packed weekend of games, our feature this weekend is Metro FC’s visit to Ellerslie in a critical Lotto NRFL fixture for both sides. So a special welcome to Ant’s and his resurgent Metro FC side – neither Metro or Ellerslie would have imagined being in the spots we are in at the moment at the start of the season, however those are the cards we have been dealt and both teams need points here to take some pressure off. The reality is there are plenty more games to get points in but points on the board now is much better than the possibility of points on the board later! We would love to be hospitable and wish Metro all the best in this game but the reality is that we need the points as well so there can be no such luxury, however I do wish Metro all the best for the remainder of the season and if there is a scenario which see’s both Metro and us survive the drop then I’m all for that. Our other key games are in the various AFF Knockout Cups with defending champions “The Ponies” who play in the AFF Champs division facing up against neighbours Eastern Suburbs in what is the glamour tie. In the Women’s Cup we see both our Conference and Conference reserves teams in action on Sunday against lower league opposition – more information including all the cup ties on page 42. It’s also been announced this week that First Team coach Chris Wallace will be finishing up with Ellerslie at the end of this season, to concentrate on his growing business (Noticeboard Products, for anyone who is looking for custom whiteboards etc!) and his family life – coaching at this level is a massive time commitment and Chris has worked extremely hard for all the season’s he has been involved (this is his 3rd year as First Team coach and he also did 2 prior to that as Reserves Coach). The club wishes Chris all the best with his future endeavours and wish to reassure club members that he is fully 100% committed to finishing the season positively and as high up the league table as possible. Speaking of change we also have had a bit of turnover with our bar staff, with Alannah and her partner Dion stepping down to concentrate on their family and their pending little bundle of joy – Alannah has been with us for the last three seasons and has been vital to the operation of the bar and clubrooms, so thanks Alannah for all your hard work and enjoy the next chapter of your life. We are currently in the process of confirming a couple of new staff members for the bar, they will be announced in our next match day program (fingers crossed). Also just wanted to congratulate Adam Scott who makes his 50th First Team appearance this weekend – Adam has been with Ellerslie since 17 th Grade in 2010 and has spent the last 5 seasons in our NRFL Squad. Still in his early 20’s Adam has the potential to become part of the 100 Club here at Ellerslie, we wish him all the best in his 50th game! LAST WORD: For all those not lucky enough to get tickets to the All Blacks vs Lions first test at Eden Park you are all more than welcome to join us in the clubrooms from 7:30pm to watch on the big screen, the more the merrier!
Cheers Tim Adams Senior Club Chairman - ELLERSLIE AFC

There is only three games to pick in the NRFL Div 1 this weekend as the other three games are postponed due to Chatham Cup action for one of both the teams involved - this means these games have been rescheduled to the 1st catchup window on the 8th of July... at this stage. Anyway read below for our picks for the three NRFL games and later in this program for our Chatham Cup Northern Region Picks!
Mt Albert Ponsonby vs Waitemata FC Anderson Park @ 3pm Mt Albert Ponsonby come into this game on the back of what would have been a disappointing result against neighbours Metro FC in the New North Road Derby last weekend, particularly since several Metro FC players had recently traded the Black and Red stripes for the Blue and Gold of MAP. Scott McKay will want to see a response from his side who have a whole lot of talent against a middling but hardworking Waitemata side. Something the McLeod Park based side proved last weekend when they held league leaders Western Springs will all their firepower to a narrow 2-0 win. Bob Sova and his team will take some confidence from that into this game and they will fancy points against a team they only narrowly lost in the 1st round by one goal in a 7 goal thriller. MAP Last 5: Metro 1-3 (Loss), Manukau City 1-1 (draw), Hibiscus Coast 2-5 (loss), Tauranga City 4-3 (win), Oratia 3-2 (win) WAI Last 5: Western Springs 0-2 (loss), North Shore 0-5 (loss), Melville 1-1 (draw), Franklin 1-1 (draw), Metro 2-1 (win)
PREDICTION: Recent form points to MAP and that's where we are picking - 3-1
Ellerslie AFC vs Metro FC Michaels Ave @ 3pm The literal definition of a 6 pointer - both teams so desperate for points here, someone is going to have a good Saturday night and someone is going to be unhappy - even a draw doesn't really help either team, particularly Metro. Ellerslie come into this crunch game off the back of some improved performances against Coast and Manukau but with only 1 point to show for it and with Metro's recent upturn of form it wasn't enough points to show for the performances they put in. Metro have made some big changes and lost some players to other clubs after their slow start to the season, however they are unbeaten in the last three games (two of which incidentally were both derby games) so that will give them heaps of confidence heading into a game where if they win they can draw level on points with the hosts. ELL Last 5: Manukau City 1-3 (loss), Hibiscus Coast 2-2 (draw), Tauranga 0-4 (loss), Oratia 2-4 (loss), Franklin 6-0 (win) MET Last 5: MAP 3-1 (win), Western Springs 2-2 (draw), North Shore 2-2 (draw), Melville 0-12 (loss), Waitemata 1-2 (loss)
PREDICTION: Sticking my neck out for a home win, I kinda have to!
Oratia United vs Manukau City Parrs Park @ 3pm The Green machine face a tough challenge at home when they host high flying Manukau City for the first time this season, the clash in the first round resulted in a narrow win to City, but Oratia started the season slowly which is a bit of a tradition for them. Steve Cain's men have been a bit hot and cold this season, but I recall him saying they played better against less direct teams so they may find Kevin Fallon's technical frontline a bit easier to deal with. At the other end of the pitch where twin towers Hone Fowler and Reece Day match up against Mark Withers there will be plenty of intrigue watching those contests. Manukau have had a pretty sharp start to the second half of the season with their hiccup against MAP two rounds ago wiped away with a hard fought win at home against Ellerslie.
12
TIA Last 5: Hibiscus Coast 2-4 (loss), Tauranga 1-2 (loss), Franklin 1-1 (draw), Ellerslie 4-2 (win), MAP 2-3 (loss) MAN Last 5: Ellerslie 3-1 (win), MAP 1-1 (draw), Western Springs 2-0 (win), North Shore 3-2 (win), Melville 3-2 (win)
PREDICTION: City to keep on rolling - top spot theirs to grab while Springs are on cup duty.

Manukau City vs Ellerslie AFC – Walter Massey Park, 17th June @ 3pm For those of you who attended this game on Saturday you will know what we are referring to in the title of this report – and it’s a bloody shame as neither team really deserved to have their afternoon clouded by this kind of issue, but it’s one that is not going away quickly. Before we continue into the game and the issue above I would like to state that I was very impressed with the welcomeness and respect to football Manukau City as a club showed – they may be hamstrung by some of their facilities, but they don’t let that effect them and they box on strong. They also welcomed us as a fellow club and not mortal enemies which we have encountered a couple of times this season. On the field they played good solid football and while they at times were not flashy, they were effective and disciplined (mostly) and tough to break down consistently. For us we knew facing a top team would be a chance to test ourselves before our big test this coming weekend against a resurgent Metro side – and that we did. I won’t delve into the match too much as we need to keep our powder dry for this weekend but what we brought to the field lads from # 1 to # 11 (ok from number #25 to number #40) in terms of energy and passion was spot on – sure there were a few mistakes still but play like that and believe in yourself like that – points will come.
In the game Manukau started attacking the goal at the Massey Road end of the park and were rewarded for some sharp play on the 15th minute mark of the game when Jeremias Perez found enough space to squeeze off a shot from outside the box which left Jason with no chance as it flicked off the inside off his right hand post and into the goal. Such was the crowd of players between Perez and the goal that Jason would have had his vision of the shot blocked for the majority of it’s path. We continued to play after that setback and there were a few opportunities that we just couldn’t convert, but signaled that we were threatening – one instance in particular stands out in the first half, Sangster was the architect as he got around his struggling fullback and put a peach of a ball into the box along the ground bisecting the 6 yard box – unfortunately neither Andy or Rowan were able to convert this cross. We also had a pretty handy free kick which Luca ended up taking and putting just over Manukau’s right side goal post. Halftime was a chance to get a breather after a lot of hard work in the first 45mins – the entire team worked their butts off executing the game plan and we fueled them up with some sugar and some H20 and sent them back out for some more. We started the second half with the same kind of passion and determination as the first, however we were undone for Manukau’s second goal by a piece of brilliance from the home sides top scorer and talisman Andre Estay as he bravely won a header over both Jason and Freddy to double the scoreline. We threw some fresh legs on – not because the players on the field had not played well, but more to give us an extra couple of percentiles of energy for the last portion of the game. Alex and Alex as our subs did just that and our goal came from the boot of Alex Clark who is back for a second stint at Ellerslie after being away at College and with Assistant Coach Nick Russo at OMU in his college break last season.
26
Alex found some space in-between the lines and Sangster found him with a nice pass, and
Alex finished well with a low shot that found the space between the GK’s dive and the upright – then all hell broke loose! What kicked off all the fuss was our perception that the Manukau Keeper had intentionally elbowed our scorer Alex Clark in the throat as he was trying to collect the ball to expedite the restart of the game – however after having several conversations over the past couple of days I believe any contact by the keeper was probably accidental, I am prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. However at the time our players certainly did not and there was a bit of a melee in the box as players “discussed” the actions of the GK. Typical of football players were in each others faces but I must stress I never saw anything from either side which warranted any further action. That’s what made what happened next as such a big surprise – after carding the keeper he then turned to Luca and issued him with a straight red card, and told him it was simulating a headbutt? What? That really caused our frustration level to bubble over – we are not a dirty team, infact I think we are a little too nice most of the time – we probably have less cards this season than points, but this was a blow and it’s something we are not happy to let go of anytime soon, letters and emails have been written to AFF and they will continue to be written. Post game our coach spoke to both the referee and a player central to the issue from Manukau who both said there was no contact – and then low and behold when the referee’s report comes back from AFF the story has changed, why? Anyway there was a little more action in the game to round out before the final whistle – Ellerslie are pushing on, desperate for the equalizer and having to do this with a man down was probably a little too much to ask and Manukau had several chances to burn us on the counter, finally taking the hardest chance in the 94th minute as their leading scorer pulled out an epic chip from some way out. Frustrating as it was to lose the game we were against a good team and they scored some good goals and it would be unfair to say they didn’t deserve to win – it just rankles that in a game when upsets are common and the best team dosn’t always win that we could have nicked a point had the referee not ruined that chance. In the post match Hone spoke well and was very appreciative of the contest between the two sides, interestingly enough Kevin Fallon was absent during the speeches but found time to write the following about the game in his blog on the Manukau City facebook page:
On Saturday Ellerslie AFC came to Massey Road to win. They tried but in the final analysis were beaten by a better team. In a game that saw referee (Mr Chris Lamberth and son) officiate at a high level Manukau City proved too skilful for the visitors. All the goals were good but the last two by Andre Estay were sheer class. What a way to end a football game with Estay’s 94th minute forty yard, wonder goal. I think the referee’s name is Andrew Lamberth just FYI All we can do now is focus on what is a key clash against Metro, with or without Luca. It’s in our own hands!

Knockout competitions have a way to inspire teams and players to turn in their best performances in the the journey to silverware. The FA Cup, Copa Del Ray, Coppa Italia are prime examples of knockout competitions inspiring stories of triumph and give the ability for teams to turn a good season into a great season. The Northern Knockout Cup is as prestigious and hard fought for as any of these competitions to the teams that enter and in my opinion, is the toughest competition to win in Auckland football due to the wide variety of teams entering. The pressure is always on teams to perform in these games whether they are scheduled mid week or the day after a game. Teams will also bring their strongest performance and this is what makes the Northern Knockout Cup so special to raise at the end of the competition. Whether you are a team from division 11 or a conference team, you have the ability to shine.
In 2016, the Ellerslie Championship division side lifted the cup for the first time in the History of the Ellerslie Football Club. It was a tremendous achievement for the squad and capped off a season where we were just pipped to the league by the other cup finalist Western Springs. None of the 6 games in the cup run were easy and each victory was hard fought. A key difference for our team was the ability to have rolling substitutes with 5 players on the bench, rather than non rolling 3 from 5 in the league. This changes the way the team is managed completely during a game and gives managers the ability to change tactics a lot more fluidly. This is they way football should be played in order to develop players and managers in leagues leading up to first team level.
The cup had some tremendous matches in the run in for our Ellerslie side and very slim victories with penalties required to settle both the semi final and final. The first game was drawn against a division 2 Western Springs side. The end result was 3 - 1, a come from behind victory as the team walked into the match a little on edge but settled into the game to take the victory. This game showed that every team was going to be a challenge through the competition.
The second game was against another Western Springs side. This time the Division 1 Olys who have been playing together for a while, and showed this in the game. The only difference was a back post finish off a shot across the keeper. Little separated the two sides and once again was a great fight between the two teams.
32
The third game of the round was against the Unimount Championship side who we
had played previously and knew would be a good challenge. This game was scheduled on a Sunday one day after a title contending league game so the team's legs were heavy. Unfortunately the result of the match was null and void due to unimount using ineligible players. This shows how hard it can be for a team in regards to the schedule that is placed on teams in this competition.
Two preliminary semi finals were played at this point in how the competition was made. We played an Eastern Suburbs Division Three side who had some good players. Ellerslie came out on top 3-1 after a dominating performance in the second half.
The semi final was against Waiheke United away. This proved a great challenge and heading into the match the Waiheke team had not lost at home for 3 years. The team knew this would be a challenge and we would be put to the test. The team battled out a 0-0 draw and the game went to penalty shootout. We eventually won 5 - 3 in the shootout to deliver the first home loss in 3 years to Waiheke United and also the first time they hadn’t scored a goal during match proper at home.
The final was against our rivals in the league, the Diamond Geezers of Western Springs, who had pipped us to the title a week earlier. To the team, this was an opportunity to settle the score and claim silverware. The start of the match did not go the way we wanted and we went in 3 - 1 down at the half. Ellerslie levelled the score in the 2nd half and a goal a piece was shared in extra time, leaving the score at 4 - 4. This once again brought us to penalties. Ellerslie missed the first which immediately put the pressure on our Goalkeeper to make some saves. He rose to the occasion and saved two penalties for Ellerslie to win 5 - 4 on penalties. A fantastic competition and a great way to end the season. There were great moments across all these games for the players and it highlighted the ability of the squad to battle and dig deep and get the results when required. We look forward to another good cup run in 2017 and will look to retain the silverware the team fought so hard to collect for Ellerslie. The first game in the 2017 cup for us was against another Ellerslie team, Division 1 Boylan. Was a great game and a great way to kick off the cup. The match was won 6 - 1 by the Champs team and hopefully this form will kick on through the rest of the cup as we aim to retain the title. FULL DRAW ON PAGE 42

ISPS HANDA CHATHAM CUP ROUND 3 PREVIEWS Northern Region Takapuna AFC vs Central United Two divisions separate these proud yellow clubs, the cup takes centre stage at Tahoroto Park again (nailgate anyone?), Central will fancy themselves in with a shout here. Three Kings United vs Ngongotaha AFC The Mt Roskill based side have been handed what some might consider pretty easy tie for the 3rd round, Ngongotaha though have been proving all their doubters wrong all season so it won’t be a cakewalk for Kings. Melville United vs Franklin United In a replay of their recently contested league game, visitors Franklin will want to put up more of a challenge, not getting a guy sent in the early minutes of the game will help. Melville will have their eyes set on the next round!
Hibiscus Coast AFC vs Onehunga Sports AFC The two green machines get drawn together at Stanmore Bay - It will have been some time since Sports last played here and they are flying high in the league this season and will have a league/cup double in their crosshairs Hamilton Wanderers vs Bay Olympic An all premier league clash (one of only two) see’s Bay Olympic travel to Hamilton in the Tron’s second Cup game of the afternoon. Wanderers will really want the win and may hope to draw Meville in the next round for local bragging rights. East Coast Bays AFC vs Birkenhead United The competition’s holders have not had a home game for some time, but away games at Glenfield (last round) and Bays this round are not exactly far from home base at Shepherds Park, maybe next round for the Birko massive. Waitakere City vs Western Springs AFC Taking a little poetic license this is a game that will tug at the heart strings for Springs coach Neil Emblen with his former club up against his current club, should be a good clash though with the Green and White hoops just with the edge Matamata Swifts vs North Shore United Matamata’s reward for being this regions giant killers is a tough home fixture against the up and down Devonport based side, A game the Swifts will be doing well to win and get into Round 4, but don’t count them out!
