Welcome everyone to another great weekend of Footy at Michaels Ave and around Auckland – in store for you at “The Ave” this weekend we have a historic NRFL match as Waiheke United make their debut visit to the home of Ellerslie AFC, check out the main game at 3pm with the Reserves set to be a 2nd vs 3rd encounter not to be missed from 12:30pm. We also have a community event on Sunday as we team up with LiteClub and Sustainable Coastlines to clean up Michaels Ave – our Green Ponies group have driven this initiative as we strive to reduce our footprint on the Reserve – come down between 1pm and 3pm on Sunday to help us out! For the main game we welcome a name who is familiar with Michaels Ave in Malcolm McPherson who was in charge of neighbours and National League partners Eastern Suburbs not so long ago – so welcome to Malcom and his team which features a number of national league players, Tom Shaw, Marc Evans, Silivo Rodic, Jerahl Hughes to mention a few – no doubt it will be a tough game but one we are up for! Looking away from home we have a key game being played in Waiuku as our league topping Champs team take on Waiuku in what looks to be a league deciding fixture, so good luck to Glenn and his lads there! On a slightly different note a massive congrats to a couple of players who have reached or are about to reach individual milestones: Tove Bennett made her 100th First Team appearance earlier this season – we were able to present her with her 100 Club shirt after the Norwest game recently – she joins 2 of her current teammates in the 100 Club. Dylan Horgan sits on 49 First Team appearances so if he gets on the field against Waiheke he will make his 50th – all done just after his 19th birthday! Great effort. Deb Tutty has 149th appearances for the Women’s First Team – so if she plays against Onehunga she will hit 150 – what an achievement! Good luck to all the teams for this weekend and we look forward to seeing you back in the clubrooms for a cold beer and some hot chips!

Cheers Tim Adams Chairman ELLERSLIE AFC

Here at NRFL Prediction headquarters we are officially in squeaky bum time - it's the business end of the season and unlike the boring NRFL Division Two we have a proper race on for the promotion spots (well one of them anyway). Let's get stuck into looking at this weekends games. FORREST HILL MILFORD vs MELVILLE UTD BECROFT @ 3pm It's easy to forget that FHM were one of the relegated sides from Premier League last season (although they have done much better than Manurewa) but dispite not being that great they have notched up a run of wins recently and if they can do the unthinkable and take points off Melville they could genuinly be in the discussion for second spot. Melville on the other hand just need to keep focusing, I think i read somewhere that if they win this weekend and another result goes their way they can win promotion this weekend - I can't be bothered checking that so let's just go with it. PREDICTION: Melville although only by 3. WAITEMATA FC vs TAURANGA CITY MCLEOD @ 3pm Tough match - both teams rely on a physical presence with a touch of skill than anything else and both sides have some big units - Waitemata have found goals recently from the boot of Kuyama Toma Kanon which has helped. Tauranga on the other hand have battled along all season and never really been too badly thrashed, staying in most games as long as they could - A war of attrition! PREDICTION: Can't seperate these teams, 1-1 or 2-2 HIBISCUS COAST vs MT ALBERT PONSONBY STANMORE BAY @ 3pm Coast have been in free fall - something like 5 losses on the bounce, conceeding 16 goals in that period while scoring 2. Coast also had their coach Maurico Rojas sent off last week after the game for abuse of a match official, so a four game ban there won't be helping. The only thing in their favour is that 18 points is probably enough to keep them safe. MAP have had a decent season again under the stewardship of Scott McKay - in reality if they can win their catch up games they sit 3 points off Waiheke in 2nd so plenty to play for if the Anderson Park based side want Premier League in 2019. PREDICTION: MAP by several. MANUREWA AFC vs ORATIA UTD MEMORIAL @ 3pm Massive game for both teams, who sit 11th and 12th respectively with only a point keeping Rewa above Oratia. If Rewa win they come within two wins of Ellerslie and a sniff at a great escape - Oratia face the same scenario although due to goal difference they will need two more wins and a draw at minimum to leapfrog Ellerslie. This could be a classic dogfight and I wouldn't be surprised to see a red card or two or a goalfest. PREDICTION: Something tells me to expect a high scoring draw - something like 3-3.

12

FENCIBLES UTD vs NORTH SHORE UTD WILLIAM GREEN @ 3pm A real grude match from a Fencies POV as they face up against a stacked Shore team who have spent their way back into promotion, including grabbing two of Fencibles top scoring players in Sean Latimer and Charlie Maddison. Fencies had been off colour but a nice win against Oratia in their last game has given them a bit of confidence for this clash, but Shore are talented across the park and will fancy a crack at second spot and promotion into the premier league. PREDICTION: Hard to see Shore not taking this game - could be tight though, maybe 2-1

NRFL DIVISION ONE - SEASON SCHEDULE 24.03.18 R01 - vs Hibiscus Coast, 5pm 31.03.18 R02 - @ Mt Albert Ponsonby, 3pm 07.04.18 R03 - vs Waitemata FC, 5pm 14.04.18 R04 - vs Oratia Utd, 3pm 21.04.18 R05 - @ Forrest Hill Milford, 3pm 25.04.18 R06 - vs North Shore Utd, 5pm 28.04.18 R07 - @ Waiheke Utd, 3pm 05.05.18 R08 - vs Fencibles Utd, 6pm (Mental Health Awareness Game) 19.05.18 R09 - @ Melville Utd, 3pm 26.05.18 R10 - vs Manurewa AFC, 5pm 02.06.18 R11 - @ Tauranga City, 3pm 09.06.18 R12 - @ Hisbiscus Coast, 3pm 16.06.18 R13 - vs Mt Albert Ponsonby, 5pm 23.06.18 R14 - @ Waitemata FC, 5pm 30.06.18 R15 - @ Oratia Utd, 3pm 07.07.18 R16 - vs Forrest Hill Milford, 5pm 21.07.18 R17 - @ North Shore Utd, 3pm 28.07.18 R18 - vs Waiheke Utd, 3pm 04.08.18 R19 - @ Fencibles Utd, 3pm 11.08.18 R20 - vs Melville Utd, 3pm 18.08.18 R21 - @ Manurewa AFC, 3pm 01.09.18 R22 - vs Tauranga City, 3pm

TRANSFER NEWS It’s been a busy transfer window for Mark Rudan and the Phoenix with a handful of new signings let’s have a look at the new recruits. Steven Taylor - probably the most well known of the signings having played a lot for Newcastle United between 2003 and 2016 (215 games), with a fair amount of those years spent in the Premier League. Injuries in the end dulled what was a very promising career with Taylor donning the arm band for the Magpies on several occasions. A rugged defender, he will bring a hard edge to the Nix if he can avoid the Physio table.

Filip Kurto - A 1.9 Meter tall GK who hails from Poland and has experience in the Dutch Premier League mostly with Roda JC. Capped at every youth level it appears Rudan has found a solid man for his most troublesome position, time will tell!

14

Michal Kopczynski - Another Polish recruit for Rudan who might list Sydney FC’s ex star and fellow Pole

Adrian Mierzejewski as his recruitment agent, Michal joins the club on a one year loan from Polish Champions Legia Warsaw, his boyhood club. 53 appearances with the majority coming in the last 2 seasons, which includes a handful of Champions League fixtures mean he has experience and youth on his side - will he be the next defensive midfield star for the Wellington club? Mitch Nicholls - The journeyman Aussie joins the Nix as his 5th A-League club and maybe with a point to prove, a star with the Roar in their fantastic league winning seasons but Mitch has bounced between a few clubs since then. He has the quality, but the proof will be if he can perform in Wellington he doesn’t have many chances left if he fails. David Williams - only 30 years of age but with over 150 A-League app’s with three clubs makes David a good recruit to add competition to a front line at the Nix which has the reputation of going missing during the season, one of those players who always seemed to score against the Nix - let’s just hope that doesn’t keep happening!

Playing at Allen Hill is always a bit strange – I wouldn’t say cursed although results there have been a little tough to get against Shore recently, but mostly that’s just because they have had some good players more than anything else. On Saturday we had a classic Allen Hill moment, players were late, lost and no showed – mostly for the reserves which was a shame as a win against a tough Shore team would have put some real pressure on Fencibles, instead it looks tough to catch them now. During the week I tried to prepare the players for the travel component of the North Shore challenge, I warned them about allowing extra travel time and I posted up both names, being Allen Hill Stadium and Dacre Park for the millennials to use for their google search (actually I’m pretty sure once they do a google search it tells them the travel time as well – maybe that’s not that useful once you have already left late…) Still I’m confident my instructions stopped one player from heading to QBE stadium by mistake…… On a more serious note we did have players unavailable for a genuine and scary reason as Reserves player John Murphy who was a key part of the club last season and had just returned from a 6 month sabbatical and was preparing to don his Ellerslie colours for the first time this season was hit by a taxi on Friday night and was probably lucky to only suffer a badly broken leg – A bitter blow for John but he had the support of some of his teammates in Adam Barkley and Joe Junge who recused themselves of playing duties to be with their teammate and friend through his Hospital and Surgery experience, John’s family are still overseas so it was very important for Adam and Joe to be there! We didn’t announce this news to the teams before their games as we didn’t want to distract them too much – some people knew and I’m sure we all wish John all the best with his recovery.

So to the Reserves game – a tough challenge against a Shore team who beat us in the end quite convincingly in the first round and on what was a very tricky pitch as well – it had drained well but was still soft on top and hard underneath which made footing a bit of an issue at times – some of the younger guys with only the one pair of boots struggled even

more!! In team news there was a welcome back to the squad for Rowan Corbett who had been on holiday and Alex Arnold who made his first start in Reserves, a well-deserved start. The game started well with Ellerslie doing well with the ball and creating a few opportunities across the front three of Rowan, Karar and Leon with Monju in behind them in the 10 role. To be fair we probably wasted a couple of chances but also should have ended up with a man advantage when the Shore GK raced out to challenge Monju outside the box – was it not for the foul Monju would have had the ball on the edge of the box with only a defender who had retreated into the goal to beat – the definition of an obvious goal scoring opportunity. (for those who are yelling at your screen now that the GK wasn’t the last man, stop reading now as you need to go pick up a copy of the laws of the game and catch up). The referee however either didn’t want to effect the game so early or is still operating on the now defunct laws – either way the end result was only a yellow for the GK . That didn’t slow us down initially as we kept pushing for a goal and a nice ball forward that was flicked on by Monju to Rowan who sprinted clear and finished well past the GK to open the scoring. That was the extent of the scoring in the first half – as Rowan took his leave to sit on the bench for the First Team and U17’s player Andre Fruh took a spot in midfield and we shuffled the team around to suit. Shore did come out better in the second half, and as the game wore on we weakened, something that is systematic of not having a full bench and also there has been a noticeable drop in training attendance from a few players in the reserves so conditioning is not maybe where it should be. When Shore equalised we did stage a mini revival but not long after that Luke MacKay got hit by the cramp demon and had to be replaced, Nick Shaw came in for him into a midfield role and Karar I think dropped to fullback. Our last sub saw Marshy enter the game for Karar who was required for First Team duties, a well deserved call up again for Karar who has made massive leaps with his game this season.

19

Shore grabbed another two goals in the second half to win the game – I don’t have the times or scorers as the Referee didn’t have access to comet so has not filled in the info on the match report. The result makes it tricky for us to hunt down Fencibles at the top of table and also means staying in second may be a challenge with third place Waiheke coming to Michaels Ave this weekend – a crucial fortnight for the Reserves so seeing good numbers at training would be a good start! For the First Team we faced a bit of a challenge – with Dan McLean away we called up Seb who has been immense for the Reserves this season and has performed well for the First Team whenever called upon so it was great to see him pick up his 46th First Team appearance – Adam Scott kept his place in the side and Conrad returned in midfield as did Jordan Bresler. Early on in the game we looked ok and moved the ball around reasonably well on the tricky pitch and Shore pressed us high to find an early error, which was not forth coming. However in the 20th minute a couple of defensive lapses combined with some good play from Shore cost us a goal. Rahman Bashir started the attack on the left flank and was well tracked by Sam Twigg before he passed the ball inside to Sam St De Criox who had not been tracked by Dylan – Sam made an excellent 1st time pass to Sean Latimer who had dropped off our backline and turned and played a little dinked ball over the backline to Sam St de Croix who had made a run from deep and had enough space to control Sean Latimer’s excellent pass and finish inside the right hand post – a nice little goal but one that could have and maybe should have been stopped at several points.

20

At halftime we spoke about how we were going to get back into the game – we had looked decent in midfield in stages with Dylan getting the ball in some good areas and Sam proving a threat in behind his fullback – we just gave away a lot of ball in the final third which released the pressure on what was a solid but not spectacular backline for Shore.

The second half however was not kind to us and we regressed and as the game wore on we struggled more and more – of course it could have been worse as only 3 minutes into the second half the referee awarded (harshly in my view) a penalty to North Shore after Rahman Bashir got inbehind us and chopped the ball back in the box and lost his footing as Jordan came in to shut him down – was there a little bit of contact, I didn’t see much but the referee was certain. However the footy gods were smiling on us a little and Conor Tracey with all his experience made what we thought was a crucial save to deny Sam St de Criox a second goal. Sam St de Criox didn’t wait long to make up for his effort from the spot as he slammed home a nice outside of the foot shot after a patient buildup that saw our midfield pulled to one side of the field and an intelligent ball to a late run from Sam saw him with the chance to bury his shot which he did well – this goal triggered a few changes as we brought on Ben Shaw and Rowan Corbett to try and shake a goal loose from the tree and mount an unlikely comeback Unfortunately all that happened is that Shore grabbed a third goal to kill off the game – this one was a little unlucky as a deflected pass wrongfooted Seb and then Sean Latimer who had two assists at this point managed to beat our last defender and beat Conor in goal with a nice angled strike. Not an ideal game for us but Shore are a very decent side and with Sam St de Criox they have a gem of a player – Shore certainly belong in the argument for second place with Waiheke and MAP the other serious contenders in my mind. This weekend we get to see promotion hopefuls Waiheke up close and personal in what will be a tricky set of games for us – check it out at 12:30pm for Reserves and 3pm for First Team at Michaels Ave Reserve.

Since our last roundup the Women’s First Team have had two matches (shock horror), with the first one being a comprehensive 5-2 win against Hibiscus Coast on Thursday night at Michaels Ave infront of a decent crowd – goals to Tove Bennett, Kezia Kelly, Leigh Aitken, Anita Trudgen and Pippa Carr. Then we moved to Sunday and the Reserves played the curtain raiser against Metro (who we were playing for the first time this season thanks to some postponed games) and the Reserves recorded their first clean sheet of the season and found their shooting boots to record a 7-0 win, with goals coming from Steph Trowill (3), Eva Maculay (2), Pippa Carr, and Maggie Jaques and a Reserves debut for Josie Kairua who played really well.

The Women’s First Team then took on Manukau on the turf, Manukau going through a tough patch only had 9 players so Zoe stepped up after having played an entire Reserves game and played the first half of the game at which point an 11th player had turned up for Manukau and in the second half Akhita and Pippa helped the away side out which was nice to see in the spirit of football.

With Manukau being short of numbers the result was never really in question, so with a bit of pressure off we went about our business and raced out to a 5-0 lead at halftime thanks to goals from Tove (2), Anita, Leigh and Deb who popped in a standard headed goal for good measure. We took the opportunity to rest some legs seeing as we were playing twice in 4 days after not having played more than once every 14 days for the last two months so the second half was a little more tame in terms of goal scoring, however we still grabbed two more as Kez continued her hot scoring streak and Sarah grabbed one as well – sadly Erin had her clean sheet ruined with a slightly dubious penalty call for handball, it didn’t change the game however but GK’s and defenders get a little grumpy when these things happen which is understandable – irony is that the final score of 7-1 is the same as the first round against Manukau so there is at least some symmetry there.

So all in all a decent period of games with 3 wins from three games – looking forward to this weekend the First Team have a tough challenge at home in league leaders Onehunga Sports while the Reserves head across town to play Metro in the reverse fixture in what is the last league game of the season for the Ressies.
