THE AVE - ISSUE FIVE 26.07.20
2 Welcome everyone to another match weekend at Michaels Ave Reserve - With a bit of luck the weather from the weekend will have blown over and we will be left with some nice sunny afternoons to play. For this match weekend we welcome Auckland United to Michaels Ave for the first time ever, Auckland United for those who don’t know is the merged identity between Three Kings and Onehunga Sports which was formed late last year.
This fixture will be an interesting one as there are quite a few teams in the hunt for the Women’s Premier League this season, dare I say it’s one of the more open seasons I remember. Glenfield and Claudelands have their own battle shaping up but the rest of the teams all look capable of beating anyone else on the day so it will be interesting to see how this round of games go and the next couple of weeks as well. Ellerslie AFC welcomed a sponsor on-board last weekend as Spider Personnel officially debuted as a match day sponsor (as well as a general sponsor) for the Women’s NRFL, this weekend sees us add to more sponsors as Zeffer Cider and Number Eight Security join the team as well. Zeffer Cider will be sponsoring the social club group within the Women’s First Team and Number Eight Security joins the team as a back of shirt sponsor - keep an eye out on our facebook page on Sunday for a full introduction to Number Eight Security! There are some other exciting pieces of content in this program - make sure you check out the player profiles as we learn more about Erin Mattingly and Sarah Robinson and we also hear from Zamantix Roverines (our newest Women’s Team) who play in Women’s AFF Div 3. Please join us after the match in the clubrooms to chat about the game and have a cold drink and some food - best of luck to all the teams this weekend! Cheers Tim Adams Chairman

8 ROVERS STRUGGLE TO RECOVER AS PONIES BOLT OUT OF THE GATE by EAFC Media
Life in the Premier League has proven tough for Claudelands in the Premier League, but spare a thought for the Hamilton based side who fought tooth and nail with Auckland Football over the off-season to take the vacant spot in the league following the merge of Three Kings and Onehunga Sports, but were only given the green light very late on in the piece – putting them behind the ball (literally) this season. Sentiment wasn’t on the thoughts of the coaching staff at Ellerslie AFC however, as they prepared for this match like they had any other game this season, aware any team in this league can cause upsets on their day – it was their jobs to make sure this wasn’t Claudelands day. Ellerslie had at times this season started extremely well and this game was one of those as they bolted out of the starting gate (yes that’s a racehorse reference) with a goal to Anita Trudgen in the 2nd min – she positioned herself perfectly in the box and when a hopeful ball in from young fullback Tayla Hawes wasn’t dealt with by the Rovers defence she swept the ball home from inside the 6 yard box. It wasn’t a great start for Rovers – as underdogs you never want to concede an early goal, you want to battle for everything and make it tough for the other team – and for the next 20 odd minutes they did exactly that, even winning the possession battle between the 5th min and the 15th min. Ellerslie did grab a chance for a second goal in the 23rd minute as gun striker Britney Cunningham-Lee was fouled in the box as she was dribbling along the goal line, that foul and the resulting penalty which was converted well by Leigh Aitken was the start of the end of the game as Ellerslie piled on 5 goals in the next 15 mins. Earlier in the day the Ellerslie AFC Reserves put their loss against Western Springs last weekend behind them as they delivered a convincing performance in a 7-1 win over Claudelands Reserves, with goals to Petra Buyck (8′), Hollie Leona (18′, 58′), Kezia Kelly (38′), Ella Wiebe (45′), Jess Gallagher (’49) and Ruth Bowerman (84′). That onslaught of 5 goals from the Women’s First Team meant we headed into halftime at 6-0 and Britney had grabbed 10 minute hatrick, with Anita bagging a double and Kim Oosterbeek with the other goal as she finally got that goal from a corner that Callum as one of the defensive coaches has
9 been banging on about for months, maybe now that has been done we can go back to hearing all about Man United from Callum…. groan. Unfortunately for Claudelands the second half was a mirror image of the first half with Britney grabbed her 4th goal within a minute of the restart, before Leigh added her 2nd in the 48th minute. Any hopes from the visitors of having a strong start to the second half were quickly dashed. Meanwhile at halftime moments earlier Ryan Shiffman had gone to his bench early and made a triple sub during the break with Deb Tutty, Anita Trudgen and Maddy McCormick all getting a rest, with Charli Collard and Sarah Robinson and debutant Dayna Manak coming on. It was another debutant (Petra Buyck) who was next on the scoresheet, with practically her first touch after coming on she picked up the ball on the right wing and speed past the fullback and expertly cut into the box with the ball on her stronger left foot, before smashing a powerful shot into the top right corner of the goal to give Ellerslie their 10th goal and her first career goal for Ellerslie in the 60th minute. It was then Sarah’s turn to get on the scoresheet – Even though the Ellerslie AFC official records have her scoring her first goal for the club last week in our 2-1 win over Western Springs the “officials” at Auckland Football somehow recorded her cross/shot as an own goal, however there
10 was no doubt about this one as she held off her defender after being played in expertly by Leigh and finished low and hard with her left foot past the hapless keeper. Ellerslie’s final goal couldn’t have gone to a more deserving person, as Leigh grabbed her hatrick to go with her 4 assists and her 87.5% shots on target ratio for the match. This final goal was a perfect showcase of her skills as she received a through ball which was expertly weighted by Annabelle Pakieto, but she was quickly shut down by the cover defence, but such was her determination to get her hatrick she twisted and turned in the box, pulling the three defenders marking her left and then right, then left again – making just enough room for her to get the ball on her right foot and curl a shot past the diving keeper to finish off the scoring for the game. The stats for the game seem to suggest that Ellerslie’s power, pace and guile at the attacking end of the pitch was the major difference in this game as “The Ponies” racked up 27 shots, compared to the 2 that Claudelands recorded. The visitors however were not completely outclassed in possession as they recorded a respectable 44.7% and they completed a lot more passes in their defensive third (72) than the hosts (45). However having only completed 16 passes in their attacking third (compared to Ellerslie’s 60) tells the story of Claudelands attacking woes.
11 Claudelands still have plenty to fight for this season as the one relegation spot is still well and truly up for discussion between them and Glenfield Rovers (there can be only one Rovers???) and it’s not inconceivable that another team could be pulled into the fight as well if both the Rovers teams find some form. For Ellerslie it was a job well done and with Britney’s four goals and relentless running it was hard to look past her as Player of the Day, as she took ownership of Ginny for the first time and also drew level at the top of the NRFL Women’s Premier Golden Boot table.
This coming weekend “The Ponies” host Auckland United which will be a special game for a number of the team, so join us at 3pm on Sunday at Michaels Ave for more Women’s Premier action!

16 Roverines relish the rivalry
The Roverines are one of two Ellerslie sides playing in the AFF Div 3 Senior Womens competition. Their story began three seasons ago with ex-Captain, Maria Elias (who is currently on Maternity Leave for this season). After months of bugging then Coach Ash Maharaj (who went on Paternity Leave last season), they got their heads together and put out a call for women to join the club and build up a team. Just three years later, the ladies have moved into the Ellerslie fold and are fresh off a promotion after finishing in second last season. Onboard the leadership team is Head Coach David Smith, who has over 30 years coaching experience. It’s incredible really given he claims he’s only in his 30s (hehe). Club veteran, Ron Kumar, has taken on the role of Assistant Coach and referee and managing the team this year is Kimberly (Kimi) Tarei who has been playing football since she could walk. Like many of the Roverines, Kimi hasn’t played competitively since university but is loving being back on the pitch.
The Class of 2020 is a great mix of skill level and range from young and old(er) with the age gap between their youngest and oldest players being almost 40 years. There is however, one thing that the Roverines share in common. Aside from a love for football, these ladies love any excuse for a get together whether it’s weekly F45 sessions at their team gym or a BYO dinner and a boogie. In fact, this season the ladies have already ticked off a few team social events this season
17 resulting in some interesting stories, but we will leave those for another day. To finish off the season, they will celebrate as a team with a three day end of season trip to Wellington in October - hopefully they’ll all make it back in one piece. This year the ladies hope to grow the team both in numbers and in skill, and with support from their excellent coaching team, they are confident that they will smash this goal. With two draws and two losses to date, they are hungry for a win and hope to make that happen in their derby match against Red Fury (fingers crossed). Follow them on instagram for more: @zamantixroverines
