BACK COVER ISSUE 6 of “The Ave” sees the Women’s team back at home against Hamilton Wanderers, while the boys are probably going to play away.
4 It’s a massive weekend of NRFL action at Michaels Ave as bottom of the table Ellerslie take on another battler in Bucklands Beach - there are many other reasons why this game could be a bit of a fire-cracker but we won’t get into those here. Reserves got back to winning ways last week so it will be great to see them continue their form this weekend as they develop the next bunch of first team players.
In club news we have appointed a contractor for the Clubrooms project and are just waiting the formal sign off on the building consent before we get stuck into groundworks on the building. It will be exciting to see the project get underway. This weekend also marks the start of the Senior social divisions and we are stoked to field 25 senior teams this year plus our affiliated partners Zamantix Rovers and AFC Bohemian Celtic - It all points to a club which is putting some big membership numbers on the board this season with numbers looking super positive in the Juniors and Youth space as well. This weekend also see’s our Women’s Team travel across Auckland to take on Auckland United in the first game of the second round - best of luck to the ladies as they have come close but not quite been able to grab the W so far. Join us up in the clubrooms after your match for a cold drink or some hot food, it might be the last season we are in our existing clubrooms, which holds a lot of memories. Good luck to all the teams this weekend but especially the Ellerslie Teams!! Tim Adams Chairman

12 A unique set of fixtures for Ellerslie with the Men’s and Women’s Reserves scheduled for Friday night at Michaels Ave opened up ANZAC weekend before the Women’s and Men’s First Team’s took centre stage on Saturday afternoon. While the weekend started positively enough with the Men’s Reserves and Women’s Reserves recording a win and a draw respectively, Saturday was a bit disappointing in terms of the results, which leave both our Men’s and Women’s teams bottom of their respective tables. Men’s Reserves: Back to winning ways The Men’s Reserves got themselves back onto winning ways after a surprise loss last week against Mt Albert Ponsonby as they wore down an enthusiastic Waitemata side on Michaels Ave #2 on a wet grass pitch. That surface assisted Ellerslie for both goals as Rowan Corbett proved too quick and strong as he collected a goal and an assist (via winning a penalty) in a first half where Waitemata had opened the scoring. A strong start to the second half from Waitemata was handled by Ellerslie who then turned the pressure on the visitors but couldn’t add to Rowan’s and Monju’s first half goals. Media Picks Man of the Match: Rowan Corbett – back on the scoring sheet and looking dangerous
13 Mens First Team: Another Fixture to Forget Having had the women play earlier in the day, the men’s game had a decent turnout as many supporters stayed for the second fixture. Unfortunately, the extra support did nothing for the lads as they went 5-0 down to Waitemata at The Ave on Saturday afternoon. The starting XI was the same as last week’s 5-1 loss to MAP, the only change being through Josh Lai, who had been out with a rib injury. Six games into the season and Ellerslie have yet to start with the same lineup as the previous week—all through injury and unavailability, not by choice. Perhaps this is one of the factors to do with their disappointing start to the season. The only other notable change was inside the technical area, where we saw Fred de Jong take charge of the team after Dave Edmondson's sending off last week. The game got off to a shaky start when the Ponies conceded in only the 6th minute through Waitemata #9 Shane Tanner. The backline was caught flat-footed when Arnold Kochasira played a ball through for Tanner to run onto going into the 18 yard box. Tanner hit it first time past the Ellerslie keeper. It was the beginning of a huge day out for Tanner and Kochasira, as they launched attack after attack on the men in red, sinking all five goals between them. Ellerslie had a chance of their own a few minutes later when Seb Poelman played a long ball over the backline that Andre Munro-Wilson was able to collect. He cut it back to Rei Ogawa-Bracey who passed it across the box to Lai to hit first time. Unfortunately his shot when wide of the goal after taking a deflection on the way.
14 Ellerslie were not without their chances, but like in recent weeks, they failed to execute at the final mark. With some sloppy turnovers in the midfield and miscommunication at the back, Ellerslie paid the price by conceding twice in three minutes. Tanner found his brace after getting on the end of a long ball over another flat backline, and Kochasira got his first after latching onto a miss-touch.
That marked a horror half to a game that was definitely winnable before the first whistle. The boys went into the sheds 3-0 down at halftime, needing a big shift in the second spell to pull them back into it. Unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be, as Waitemata put a fourth and fifth goal past the Ponies, in what was another fixture to forget. That marks six games and six losses for the lads as they currently sit at the bottom of the table. There’s obviously something missing in this team, let’s hope they figure it out soon or this is going to be one long old season. They front up for another must-win game as they take on Bucklands Beach (who are above us by one point) at The Ave this coming Saturday. 3pm is going be the start of one explosive fixture, for a long list of reasons. Make sure you come on down and support our lads. Bring the noise. Media Picks Man of the Match:
Kosei Hagino: Hard to pick a standout player in a game of that quality, but a second opinion voted Kosei as our pick. In only his third appearance for the First Team, this young left back has been chucked in the deep end and told to swim. We think he’s done pretty well despite the scorelines. Once things even out for the Ponies, we’re sure this youngster will thrive.

TWEET OF THE WEEK Hard to go past the Woodsman scoring his first English Premier League hattrick, a great effort and all of NZ football are proud of his efforts, even if it didn’t make the news that day on TV…...
PHOTO OF THE WEEK
Was great seeing Rowan back in some form and he picked up some minutes in the First Team as well, threw himself around and created some chances. Good to see
