THE AVE - ISSUE 4 18th & 19th July

NRFL DOUBLE-HEADER

2 Welcome everyone to another issue of “The Ave”, todays issue is very special for a number of reasons, firstly we have an NRFL double header as the Men’s team welcome Albany United to Michaels Ave on Sunday and then the Women’s team welcome Claudelands Rovers So a warm Ellerslie AFC welcome to our NRFL guests and indeed all the other guests to Michaels Ave this weekend. We have some great content in store for you in this issue, I highly recommend reading both the Iguana’s and Auckland Wanderers team profiles some great stuff. On a sad note we also pay tribute to Steve Knapp who passed away this week after battling illness - Steve was our Men’s Reserves coach from 2007 and 2012 and won numerous leagues and cups and inspired a ton of players to First Team football - such was his passion for Reserves that he had a trophy created for whenever the Reserves would play the First Team, which we cheekily coined the Steve Knapp Cup such was the regularity that his team would win.

Steve was a wonderful servant not only to Ellerslie but to Football in general and will be hugely missed. For those who remember him, give him a cheers with your aftermatch beer on Saturday! Cheers Tim Adams (Chairman)

10 PONIES STRIKE LATE TO GRAB FORTUNATE WIN AGAINST SPRINGS Ellerslie’s 2nd Friday night game in row saw a spirited affair at a foggy Seddon Fields, but for 70 mins the fog assisted with no goals being scored – then the flood fog-gates opened as Ellerslie opened the scoring via Britney Cunningham-Lee, before Springs hit right back with an own goal. The location of the points was decided in a very cruel way when in the 85th min an error from the home teams keeper saw Ellerslie grab the winner.

Ellerslie were forced into a change to their starting lineup for the first time this season as Annabelle Pakieto was replaced due to being unavailable for this fixture by Kez Kelly who picked up her 49th cap in the process. Seddon Fields is without doubt one of premier venues to watch football and even though Friday was a freezing day it was a nice calm evening with no wind and although it was cold it wasn’t arctic. A good crowd turned up to watch this game, including a large number of Ellerslie fans as the Western Springs clubrooms were packed with people. Similar to last Friday’s game the home side started the stronger and in this fixture Springs could have taken an early lead when a shot from just inside the box from Jolene Muir hit the bottom of Erin Simperingham’s left goalpost. Within a minute of that scare Western Springs had another shot saved as Arisa Takeda had a good long range strike pushed out for a corner by Simperingham, who was on her game. That attempt pretty much marked the end of the clearly visible action in the first half, with the thick layer of fog settling over much of the pitch. There were the odd chances here and there during the fog-fest first half, one of note was a brilliant back-peddling one handed save from Kate Hannay as an attempted high cross from Tayla Hawes from the right back position came out of the fog and was destined for the back

11 of the goal before Hannay denied it. The only other major event in the first half was a massive melee in the Western Springs six yard box as probably 16 players from both teams were involved an old fashioned goal mouth scramble, with gasps from the large crowd, pre-celebrations as the ball looked like it was in, mixed with appeals from players for anything, everything. Somehow the ball stayed out of the net much to the frustration of the Ellerslie players, and relief of the Western Springs players – the reaction from the crowd indicated that this was a real contest between committed teams and no-one was going to give in easy. Halftime was the next event of note – and with the players leaving the pitch the fog also lifted, which also gives us a segway to uncover the laws governing fog in football – apparently the rule is the referee from a position in the centre circle must be able to see both goals, which apparently he could in the first half, but it must have been only just. By the time the players eventually got back on the field the fog had completely disappeared and the second half kicked off in complete visibility – then the strangest thing happened as the players got about their business in the second half the fog started coming back, the heat coming off the players must have reacted with the cold still air and wouldn’t you know it we had the fog back – albeit not nearly as bad as the first half. When the first goal of the game finally arrived the fog had well and truly disappeared so everyone could see the best goal of the game (technically the only goal that wasn’t an own goal) as Britney raced onto a nicely weighted through-ball from Leigh who had turned her marker at halfway after Maddy had won a key intercept in midfield – Britney made the most of the ball as she outpaced the defender who had a 5 meter head-start and drove into the box and smashed her shot into the back of the net via the side of the GK who couldn’t get anything more in the way such was the power of the close range shot. Springs didn’t let going behind faze them and from kickoff they put together a string of pass-

12 es and pressured us into a hurried clearance from our own box. This was perhaps an indicator of Springs pushing on and within 2 minutes of that initial goal the home side had drawn level – with much of the build up play thanks to Emma Pijnenburg who picked up a throw in, beat a couple of players, drove at the Ellerslie backline, checked back and gave the ball to Jolene Muir who played a perfect square pass to Rina Hirano who was in acres of space at the top of the box. Her long range shot looked to be well covered by Erin Simperingham in the Ellerslie goal, but a wicked deflection on the shot left Erin diving to her left hand post while the shot floated into the goal just inside the right hand post. That goal saw Ellerslie go to their subs bench to make two further batches of changes as Courtney replaced Maddy in the 74th min and Ella and Charli replaced Leigh and Tayla in the 79th min – Ellerslie had also made an earlier change in the 71st minute as Sarah Robinson replaced Kez Kelly. It’s fair to say at 1-1 it could have been anyone’s game, Ellerslie had a few excellent chances which either the Springs defenders or Goalkeeper did well to cover up, while at the other end the wide players from Springs continued to cause “The Ponies” problems. In the 84th minute there was a game defining moment as substitute Sarah Robinson got free on the left wing, hurdled a defender and looked to fire in a left foot cross towards Britney and Ella waiting in the box – however her cross was too close to the keeper and it looked like the attack had broken down – however a lapse in concentration or a slippery ball or just the awkward height of the cross saw the springs keeper loose the ball from her grasp as she dived forward to collect it, and it rolled through her legs and into the net to give Ellerslie the lead. It had looked like Sarah’s shot (which was a cross) was on target so it seems salt in the wounds to give it as an own goal to the keeper (Actually I have noticed a large increase in own goals in NRFL this year, I wonder if there has been some kind of edict from the referee

13 development team about this, seems like a very odd thing to be worried about if that is the case). To the credit of the Springs keeper she had made some fine saves in this game and made at least one more before the 90+ minutes were up, she def came out of the game with a number of goal saving efforts next to her name. As the game ticked over into added time – the Ellerslie supporters, and coaches began to look a little nervous, perhaps some PSTD from our opening game against Hamilton Wanderers came into play – particularly as Springs piled forward and really put us under pressure – but thankfully some lessons were learned from our previous added time dramas and the Ellerslie ladies battled away and secured the 3 points when the final whistle eventually came.

A stellar performance in the heart of midfield from Lily Taitimu saw her take home the player of the day honours and an extra long period with Ginny the player of the day pony – Enjoy your 10 days with Lily Ginny! Bring on Claudelands next week at Michaels Ave!

14 ELLERSLIE BRING DROUGHT SOUTH OF THE BOMBAYS WITH LOSS AT LINKS AVE Ellerslie AFC’s drought against Tauranga at Links Ave stretches back to 2005 and after starting strong in this game the Ponies conceded two goals before mounting a comeback with a goal on debut from Adam Paulsen – however a third goal conceded prior to Adam’s goal meant a frantic end to the game with more chances missed by Ellerslie, meant Tauranga were never really at risk of losing all three points. Fred de Jong was able to select most of the team which had taken a draw in their last match against Waitemata AFC, with the exception of Rowan Corbett and Andre Munro-Wilson who were respectively ruled out due to injury and unavailable, which meant a starting spot for Ryan Morrow and Aalok Paudel, and a spot on the bench for debutant Adam Paulsen. Ellerslie actually started sharply again in this match and there was some decent interplay between Ryan and the other attacking players, Dylan, Rory and Josh. In one such piece of play Ryan managed to get a shot off which went across the face of goal and seemingly fell perfectly for Josh at the back post to tuck home – but he just couldn’t reach the ball ahead of him and Tauranga’s goal remained un-breached. Tauranga had quality in the wide areas and in particular with their #10 Jay Silcock who gave Rei a torrid time attacking down our left flank – one of

15 these raids saw him get behind our defence, only to be well tracked and tackled, but the loose ball wasn’t dealt with well and Jay had a volley which he squeezed through the tightest of spaces to open the scoring. Ellerslie did at times threaten to pull level in the first half, with some good build up play, particularly down the right as Anton Moore combined well with Rory Kelly and the other midfielders regularly – however as is often said in football they couldn’t get the final pass right and as the Ellerslie team grew frustrated they started to try and play more expansively which saw our pass percentage and time in possession drop and give Tauranga some of the momentum the visitors had built up. At halftime the team re-fuelled and re-focused and set about the task of getting ourselves back into a game we were second best in at the moment, but not by a large margin. However that wasn’t in the script apparently and Tauranga delivered a sucker punch in the 52nd minute as they went 2-0 up as we again failed to clear our lines and Andrew Carter took advantage and doubled “The Blues lead. That goal lead to Tauranga going to their bench as they replaced one cap All White Cole Peverley with Jonathan Routledge. That saw Ellerslie respond with a double sub of their own as we removed defensive midfielder Aalok Paudel and replaced him with Denny Twigg who would be stationed further forward and on the right wing we replaced Rory

16 Kelly with debutant Adam Paulsen. With subs from both teams on the field and the removal of Cole Peverley the Ellerslie team looked to wrestle back some of the dominance from the home side, and with the tricky Paulsen on the wing combining well with his teammates there looked to be a comeback of sorts from the visitors. However after being trapped by the home sides press in the 80th minute and conceding a throw in line with the 18yard box Tauranga grabbed what was a critical goal, scored by substitute Jordan Toy who had only been on the field for 2 mins – a quick throw into the box saw a Tauranga player deliver a perfect cross into a crowded 6 yard box and Jordan powered his header home via the underside of the crossbar. With nothing to loose Ellerslie threw numbers forward to try and get something from the last 10 minutes of the game and with 3 mins of regulation time left they grabbed the goal they were looking for as Adam Paulsen had a shot from the edge of the area deflected by a defender and wrongfoot the Tauranga skipper Tom Pamment in goal – for some reason Referees are obsessed with own goals at the moment, so according to the man in the middle this was an Oggie but it was on target so we are taking a morale stand on this one. There was time left for Ellerslie to create a couple more excellent chances, with the best of them being a point blank header from Denny Twigg off a

17 perfect cross from Adam Paulsen, but sadly the Tauranga GK got his body in the way and kept Denny from scoring his second goal of the season. At the final whistle Ellerslie were left rueing not taking chances at the start and end of the game and giving up a soft 3rd goal – while Tauranga were the better team for much of the game “The Ponies” could have come away with a point for their troubles had things been a little better in a few areas – a lesson learnt for future games. Congrats to the Tauranga side, they were solid throughout the field and with quality wide players they will be threats against most teams – Ellerslie are back on the horse next weekend as they face Albany United at Michaels Ave in what looms as a key clash early in the season.

The Opening goal of the game - from Tauranga’s Jay Silcock

26 As did many people over lockdown, we watched the docu-series “The Last Dance”. What struck us the most were the similarities between the Chicago Bulls and the Ellerslie Iguanas. We thought for our team write up we’d display some of those similarities: Tim Adams - you’re our Michael Jordan Tim ❤ Ben Owen - John Paxson. Loyal. Good-natured. Not that athletic, hit that great shot once in a game. Brendan Lim - Jerry Crause. (Self-proclaimed MJ). Rates himself. Massive liability, doesn’t pay the players enough. Actually though, he helped the best team ever take shape. Krause was criticised for his methods but won 6 championships. The Iguanas won the plate of the knock out cup like 5 years ago. Ian Simperingham - Bill Wennington. Only got off the bench in half the games in the finals, but happy to yarn more than most the players combined when filming the Last Dance (see: Netflix, if you haven’t already). Also does not ever ever score (many) goals. Jamie Simson - Scottie Pippen. Great player, can play all over the field or court. A 2-way player, loves breathing down the neck of defenders to pinch a ball. Like Scottie in 98’ Jamie has also seen his fair share of injuries. However, what puts Jamie on top over the 7 time all-star, international sensation, is his resilience. Jamie has been known to pop his dislocated shoulder back in mid game (shout out to the Wags for facilitating), something Scottie has never had to.. shoulder. Cam Kanaris - Dennis Rodman (on court). He’s always in it for the boys. Produces the most slide tackles per capita. Doesn’t mind getting his knees bloody for the boys! Kyle Simonsen - Dennis Rodman (off court). Kyle has been spotted only once since season tip off, and he didn’t have any shoes. He used to have the funniest Tinder stories before meeting Sarah. I heard Kyle has a nipple ring. Sarah - Carmen Electra. Way too nice/ good for Kyle, as was Carmen. Also has disappeared since start of season around when Kyle did. Suspected whereabouts, Las Vegas. Travis Scott - Steve Kerr. Nice guy. Really nice guy. Puts up a good joke, like that he carries the Igunanas as did Kerr at the championship parade. Josh Gates - Horace Grant. Traitor. Left the Iguanas for another team. Gets the blame for everything. MASSIVE shit spinner, voted “deserves the bash the most” by his teammates. Low key not that bad and we wanted him back. Graeme Jackson - Toni Kukoc. Foreign, questionable athleticism. Sometimes it’s unclear what he’s saying but has a lovely (sexy) accent that enchants the boys. Bob Stewardson - Luc Longley. The tallest person on our team. Has long arms. Has long legs. His feet aren’t that huge though. Enjoys weather “up there”. Australian, but still a good guy. Warren Nicholson - Bill Cartwright. Our “Veteran player”. He may be old but he’s certainly one of our top athletic players (don’t know if that says more about the Iguanas or Warren). At 50 will still be faster than Ben today.

27 Dan Tan - Tim Grover (Michael Jordan’s specialist trainer). Dan runs the highest quality warm up and warm down programs the Iguanas have ever seen. Dan is also famous for his ability to touch his toes unassisted. Callum McKenzie - Scott Burrell. Our new young buck. Has experience on the beers, and has the ability to stay awake past midnight. Like Burrell who played both Pro Basketball and minor league baseball, Callum found his calling with the mighty Iguanas, along with a small part time coaching gig with some women’s team (Ellerslie’s first team). Cairns Dixon-Cudd - BJ Armstrong. Gets abused by Brendan (self-proclaimed MJ). Armstrong is married, and his wife was at some point also almost 20 years old. Chris “Heat Pump” Wesley - James Edwards (2 rings with Pistons). Protects the goal. Probably wishes he was back on his old, better team after the stitch up we give him on Saturday. Somehow still for the boys. Feels like he’s been on the team for years. Michael Rippon - Michael “retired” Jordan. Both are called Michael, there’s something in the name. MJ retired 3 times, to play Baseball, for good, and then because he was playing for the shit kicking Wizards. Rippon retired at the end of last year to go to Asia. Like MJ’s Baseball career, this was a flop and he came back to the Iguanas (see: COVID 19). I suspect Mike Rippon will be off again at some point just to retire again, then sign with KFCFC, and then retire again. Shomel Gauznabi - David Aldridge. Literally everything said about the team is positive. Says nice stuff even when we’re trash. Unsure if kind or blind? George Shand - John Michael Wozniak (team security). Just like Wozniak, both have a fun-loving nature, and great hair. Wozniak was famous for the second biggest shrug after beating MJ at some game where you throw coins near the wall. George also has shoulders and is moderately competitive.

Ryan Shiffman - Barack Obama. Both have made 2 appearances. For one man, this was for the Iguanas, for the other it was for the hit series “The Last Dance”. Both clearly wanted more, but other minor engagements keep them from what they truly want. Erin Simperingham, Deb Tutty, Leigh Aitken, Anita Trudgen, Steph Jones & Hollie Leona – Boston Celtics: the team to sweep the Bulls in the 1986-87 playoffs. Although the official Iguanas vs. Ponies matchup is still yet to happen, we’re pretty sure the Pony WHAGS (Wives, Hollie, Anita, Girlfriends and Sister) would win. Could maybe stand a chance in a 7-aside game. Ramesh Mavani - Isiah Thomas. Ram never actually played for the Iguanas, as Isiah never did for the Bulls. Isiah and the “Bad Boy Pistons” were famous for walking out without shaking hands after losing in a series against the bulls. Ram didn’t even turn up to the game. Wherever you are Ram, we hope you’re well. There’s always a spot on our bench for you to not sit on. Purple Guaranas - Championship Champagne. Comes out after all great wins. Not that bad. Mixes up to make a delicious, nutritious mimosa at a legendary Iguanas brunch.

28 So since moving from Sunday to Saturday football, Wanderers went through a bit of a makeover by getting a new logo and kit. (see pictures) Wanderers also like to dabble in 8 a side tournaments in between seasons and have been back to back winners the past 2 years, hopefully we can take that winning mentality in to 11s. With Covid screwing up the start date of the 2020 season, Wanderers thought ahead and gathered the crew `once allowed` and worked on a bit of team building. This seemed to workout well with Wanderers winning away to Div 3 runners up Mt Albert Ponsonby on the opening fixture. Then weather played its part for the following week and our 2nd fixture was postponed, this gap in play between the next fixture away to Bucklands Beach rocked the boat a touch resulting in a 1-3 loss. Rolling on to last weeks fixture yet another away game v Papakura, Wanderers were extremely unlucky to lose 1-3 having controlled the entire game in Papas half but couldn't finish our dinner. Next up table toppers Manukau City, at last a home game for Wanderers.

Here`s Hoping the familarity of our surroundings along with the support from our loyal fan base and dedicated chairman Tim Adams can spur us to victory enabling us to climb that ladder. Wan the Wanderers!!

29 Wanderers were formed in 2013. We were named The Wanderers because we were a bunch of Expats 'Wandering' the world. We played in the Auckland Sunday league until 2019 where we were pretty successful. The transition to Saturday Football is taking a bit of time (hence our league position) but we will get there!

We are still predominantly made up of British and Irish players. Many of us are getting close to being 'over the hill' so this season we have made a conscious effort to recruit younger players to make sure The Wanderers never die :-) 2020 Auckland Wanderers Squad Frank Phillips (GK)
