BACK COVER

5 WELCOME TO WEST COAST RANGERS Easter weekend is on us already, it’s snuck up on us so fast - which means it’s school holidays as well and then before we know it we will back in from school holidays and it will the start of the season for Senior Community and Junior/Youth teams, then it’s 2 terms of action packed football on Saturday’s and Sundays. For today though we focus on the inaugural visit of West Coast Rangers (the merge between Norwest and Waitakere City) to Michaels Ave, and they arrive as the leaders of the league having picked up maximum points. It will be interesting to see how the Ellerslie lads match up against Chad and his team. Reserves of course kicks us off for Saturday as they look to improve their league record, they have played some nice football at times, but maybe have lacked a bit of a clinical edge, something we want to see our promising young players develop as they look to put pressure on the first team group. Last weekend we of course celebrated Adam Scott’s achievement of making his 100th EAFC First Team game, he joins a list of Ellerslie legends and deserves his spot on that list. We also had Conrad Benefield record his 50th game for the Ponies, he has been a great and dedicated player for the club and we are delighted for him to reach this milestone. Unfortunately due to staff unavailability we don’t have the clubrooms open today, but that means you can get away after the game and start your long weekend in your favourite place, please just remember to drive safe! Cheers Tim Adams CHAIRMAN - ELLERSLIE AFC

14 Ellerslie travelled away to Anderson Park to take on Mt Albert Ponsonby in what has historically always been an exciting fixture. For the third week in a row, Head Coach Ben Fletcher opted for another changed line up as he thought it was important that the players returning from Covid were given adequate time off in order to properly look out for their well being. This meant the team were still without first week players Jack Rathbone, Tom Durkin, Alan McBride and Josh Lai. Alex Clark, after scoring a brace last week, and Avi Enoka were also unavailable for selection. So a changed starting line up saw Jordan Oosterhof make his return to the first team set up after a lengthy spell off as well as Adam Foley receive his starting debut. With skipper Seb Poelman still out, the honours went to Adam Scott, who was taking the field in his 100th First Team appearance for the club. The changes didn't bother the boys, who came out firing and managed to go one up after only 4 minutes. Something the Ponies have improved on this season is their combination play around the edge of the box and it paid off to set Ermal Fusha up so he could drive a low and hard shot to the bottom left corner. A very well-placed finish from the right winger. This kicked the home side into gear and they began to settle into the game and ramp up the pressure. It wasn't until the 30th minute the blue and gold boys managed to secured their equaliser after what seemed to be a controversial goal. After a well hit shot, the ball was cleared on the line into the inside post back into Hansen's hands. However the linesman deemed the ball had crossed the line and the score went into a deadlock. Ellerslie tried their best to stay in the game until they conceded again in the 41st minute. In what seemed to be history repeating itself, a throw in was awarded to MAP when it was so very clearly Ellerslie's. MAP went onto drive down the left before sending in a cross that Sudmann took well on the volley. There was nothing Hansen could do about it and the Ponies found themselves down at the break. For the first time this season, the Ponies were behind in the scoreline so a big 45 was expected in order to scramble at least a point. As the minutes wore on, both teams found themselves with a multitude of chances including MAP smashing the upright and a very big missed chanced by Oosterhof. In what should've been a textbook cutback finish was sent sailing over the crossbar. Ben Fletcher bolstered his side by bring-

15 ing on Rowan Corbett, Conrad Benefield and Lex Davies-Campbell to help get the energy up.

As time ticked away, tension started to build on the sideline. Ellerslie's support next to the dugout were trying to keep the faith as heads dropped into hands at the close calls from either side. The game went into injury time and the boys were still trailing, the supporters starting to think that was going to be it. Just when all hope was lost, up stepped Corbett to salvage the Ponies a point. A ball was sent into the mix and the winger used all his strength to rise above everyone and header the ball into the back of the net. Cue the passion and celebration on the sideline as Ben Fletcher jumped on some of his rested played on the sideline while the #PoniesFaithful were ecstatic at the grit and determination of the lads to get over the line at the last second.

And if they thought that was the end of the excitement, they were wrong. In the next play, Ellerslie launched another attack and Morrow was able to latch onto a loose ball towards goal. He rounded the keeper as the sideline watched with baited breath, before he hit the upright in what was a too-tight angle. The referee blew his full time whistle almost directly after to round off a dramatic ending. So another exciting fixture at Anderson Park and another week for the Ponies unbeaten. After a tough few seasons, it's great to see the lads currently thriving under new leadership. Next up are back to back games over Easter against both relegated sides from the Northern Premier League - West Coast Rangers and Northern Rovers. Both will be tough oppositions so the lads will need all the support they can get! The Men's Reserves saw the return of Monju Shohei to the field for the first time this season and while the conditions at Valonia Reserve were tricky (small pitch and long grass) the team started well and created a number of chances, but couldn't find the finish - then up stepped Athan as he latched onto a perfect cross from Martin, Athan's brave diving header flew past the keeper to give the Ponies the lead. An unfortunate second yellow to Martin Lyon who in the opinion of the referee had committed a cautionable offence in trying to put a loose ball into the back of the net had to leave the field and the Ponies had 30 mins to defend their narrow lead. After MAP had grabbed the equaliser they tried to execute a ram raid for all three points but Luke Mackay stepped up and flew across goal like a secret service agent taking a bullet for the president and stopped a certain goal and in the process secured the Ponies another point.
