PHOTO/TWEET OF THE WEEK Issue 13 Focuses on the key clash between Ellerslie AFC and Hamilton Wanderers, pending results this weekend this game could be critical in deciding the final NwL spot.
4 WELCOME TO METRO FC After a tough game last weekend in miserable conditions it’s nice to be home again and we welcome Metro FC to Michaels Ave, only a fortnight after their close neighbours MAP were here. Anyway welcome to Ant’s and his team to Michaels Ave for this NRFL Men’s Div 1 clash. It’s an interesting clash with Metro having lost to Bucklands Beach last week to throw the relegation battle back into action, Ellerslie will be keen to match Bucklands result to put that issue to bed but in our way is a Metro team that we know can play and with a really impressive defence record we will have to work hard for our goals. For the Ressies a tough game against this team last time, it was a physical battle and we expect the same this time, with Ellerslie not able to catch leaders Takapuna it’s also time to give some development time to younger players which as always will be interesting to see.
Moving on to the Community Teams - at the time of printing there were a few fixtures missing, not sure what NRF is doing there (I could spend a lot of time trying to understand some of the things they do) - anyway a couple of names stand out, with Albany Schmalbany being a previous winner - so todays winner has to be South Auckland Rangers, Rongomai Park Strangers, who doesn’t love a rhyme! Play hard and play fair!!! Cheers Tim Adams Chairman

KOSEI HAGINO 90 + 55 = an epic effort! There was lots of moments of quality in that shift as well as he came on early in the First Team game for Lex who got injured.

12 MEN’S FIRST TEAM: TAKAPUNA TOO GOOD AT TAHAROTO Ellerslie faced an in-form Takapuna on Saturday away at Taharoto Park. Coming off the back of a big win against Mt-Albert Ponsonby, the boys were in positive spirits. The line-up was almost exactly the same as the previous week—Bolharyn retained his spot in goal after a great performance in the last game. Ogawa-Bracey, Torrens, Poelman and Scott were back again, as well as Grey, Lai, Clark and DaviesCampbell. Fusha was unavailable allowing Kelly to come back into the starting line up, while Morrow made another appearance for the Ponies.
The game was relatively even in the opening stages, with both teams sharing possession and a couple of half chances. However, it didn’t take long for the home side to fire first and go 1-0 up. Build up play allowed Takapuna to go down the left and send a flat ball into the box. It travelled across the edge of the 6 yard and Sean Willcox was able to fire it home, leaving the Ponies empty handed from such close range. Despite the early goal, the Ponies clawed themselves into the game and created a few big chances of their own. These included a well-hit but slightly off target volley from Kelly, a Morrow Lai combo in front of goal, with Lai’s execution lacking enough for the keeper to make a big save and a short corner that resulted in a shot missing the goal by inches. Maybe one of those shots would have gone in if the Takapuna goals were a standard size—has anyone ever measured them? They looked well short to the media team and sideline supporters. Ellerslie were dealt a blow in the 35th minute, when Davies-Campbell pulled up short with an injury, forcing Edmondson to substitute him off. He called on youngster Kosei Hagino, despite having already played for the Reserves earlier. The Ponies managed to get to the half unscathed. After the break, Benefield entered the fray, pushing Hagino to left back and Scott to the bench. Ten minutes into the half, Takapuna got onto the scoresheet again in what seemed to be a controversial goal. Takapuna found a break and Bolharyn came well forward to try and shut the player down, there was a bit of a scramble before the ball found the back of the net. However, because Bolharyn came so far for-
13 ward it appeared that a Takapuna player was offside when the ball was played to him—usually the assumption is that there’s a defender and the keeper but because Bolharyn was essentially out of the picture, there needed to be two defenders to keep the Takapuna player onside. The goal was logged as an own goal to Hagino on Comet, so maybe that’s where the loophole came from, despite no one thinking it was an own goal at the time either. Despite the Ponies creating a few more chances, they weren’t able to claw a goal back before Takapuna found their third. A tidy finish from William Heather essentially closed out the game for the blue and yellow side. A 90th minute goal from Morrow after some good link up play from Lai, Kelly and Benefield wasn’t enough for the Ponies, only denying Takapuna a clean sheet for their efforts. One positive takeaway from the match was Ben Alexander receiving his First Team debut in the 81st minute. Alexander has been a vital cog in the Reserves wheel so it was nice to see him get some First Team time and experience for his efforts. Hopefully we’ll see him take the pitch again soon!
So a disappointing loss away but the boys will look to put their focus into their next fixture against Metro at The Ave this coming Saturday. This is shaping up to be a vital one as Ellerslie sit only 5 points above relegation with four games to go. Bucklands Beach beat Metro last weekend to close the gap so the Ponies will want to produce points to widen that gap again. The lads are going to need the support so make sure you don’t miss out! Media Picks Man of the Match: Josh Lai was dangerous with the ball at his feet and Rory Kelly’s workrate in the midfield were both big parts of the Ponies game, but it’s hard to go past Kosei Hagino. The youngster played 90 minutes for Reserves then was called on to play another 55 for the First Team. A commendable effort from the left back.

19 TWEET OF THE WEEK
Honestly we think it’s surprising that Conrad’s haircut hasn’t got much media attention before this game - we think it’s epic and apparently some of the twitter followers at the game last weekend felt the same. Oh and he is also a great sparky
PHOTO OF THE WEEK Manukau Utd’s Jade Mesias keeps an eye on the game between Ellerslie AFC and Hamilton Wanderers while keeping an eye on his kids, to be fair it was a pretty wet day so the tent is extremely practical.
