PHOTO & TWEET OF THE WEEK ISSUE 10 Issue ten focuses on the Women’s team taking on Franklin in the Kate Sheppard Cup 3rd round - an exciting tie
4 WELCOME TO AUCKLAND UNITED It’s the start of the 3rd round in the 2021 Women’s Premier League and at this point teams are pretty familiar with each other so the last 2 rounds should be interesting to see what surprises coaches throw at their opposition. So a warm Michaels Ave welcome to Mauro and his Auckland United team.
For the rest of the club it’s also Cup football weekend as most of our senior teams look to progress in either the Cup or the Plate competition with an all Ellerslie match up between EPSDS and Instituto the highlight. Unfortunately there is not much in way of interesting opposition team names this weekend so we will have to pass on giving out opposition team name of the week. Big shout out to the Women’s Reserves as they take on 2nd placed Auckland United in the Women’s Premier Reserves league, the Ponies are yet to take max points from a game with United this season so a win here will be a massive step towards running away with the league or a loss will pull United right back into the frame. Lastly just a reminder to teams to please take care with the grass fields - they are starting to show some wear and tear from the season so please remember to do your warm up off the fields and make sure your opposition are aware as well.
Cheers Tim Adams Chairman FRONT COVER: Grgicevich sisters Mia and Kat with Jemma BACK COVER: Red Army!!

A hattrick against Waikato UniCol, enough said really. Kat was an absolute menace to the opposition, dominating shots etc.

12 KATE SHEPPARD CUP: FIRST EVER GOALS FOR ELLERSLIE BY GOW CRUCIAL IN CUP WIN It might have only taken Kat Gow 3 minutes to open the scoring in this 2nd Round Kate Sheppard Cup match but it would have been a relief to the skilful striker to open her Ellerslie account in her 10th appearance for the Ponies after moving to the club from Onehunga Sports at the start of the 2020 season. Little did we know at that point that she had a bigger story to tell. I think it's an understatement to say the players were excited for this game, seeing as the competition was cancelled in 2020 due to Covid and that there are only 6 teams in the Premier League this season, having something a little different is needed. Ellerslie have not had the best record in the Kate Sheppard Cup recently as we failed to pass this round since 2003 (when we were losing finalists) - a string of losses against Premier League opposition predictably took place between 2011 and 2019, with some close results being recorded.
To this season and you can imagine the excitement of a chance to right the record and drawing a non NRFL team was a bonus as well. From what I can tell Waikato Uni-Col last played in the cup in 1999 when they dipped out in the quarters to Lynn Avon United and this season is their first attempt back at the cup and as our record shows it's a lot road to progressing past this round. It's worth noting however that Waikato Uni-Col also have some history in the cup with a 3-1 win over Petone in 1995. Back to present time and the lineup for this match, with Ellerslie taking the opportunity to change their lineup this week with a few injuries and niggles to deal with and some impact players really pushing for starting spots. This saw the frontline change as Kat Gow came in for Annabelle Pakieto and Hollie Leona for Kim Mesias, while in the midfield we saw Jemma McCormick with her first start as sister Maddie stood down after getting a head knock during a school game during the week. At the back it was business as usual with Tayla shaking off some small injuries to take her place beside Kim Oosterbeek, Marie Green and Anita Trudgen, with skipper Erin Simperingham behind them. Coach Ryan Shiffman and assistant to the head coach Callum McKenzie had picked a streamlined bench of three players, consisting of Holly Marx, Mia Grgicevich and Faith Moa. Waikato Uni-Col actually started the game off well as they put together a 4 or 5 pass move and ended up with a long range well hit shot that Erin gobbled up relatively easily but I think you could see the spectators thinking hmm this might be an interesting game. Kat Gow however as earlier mentioned put that sentiment to bed as she went for an adventure down the left flank after Anita had played a nice ball in the channel, bit of a stop and go move on the edge of the box lost the Uni-Col cover defender, which left Kat with a look at the goal, albeit from a tough angle but that didn't worry her as she smoked her shot home at the near post, just beating the keeper. The left side for the Ponies was on fire early on as Anita playing as a very attacking left back, stood her player up and got in-behind the defence and fired a cut back in, only for a Waikato player to clear it back across the box, which after a few half tackles in the box fell to Leigh who slammed in a low hard shot from the edge of the area, which the keeper did well to see and then push out for a corner. Sophie Daley in goal might have not been too impressed by conceding at her near post but she was making up for it with the save above and then another equally as impressive save from the resulting corner, again off a Leigh Aitken effort. The next 10 odd minutes was spent by Ellerslie trying to pick apart the Waikato defence with the visitors proving they had enough quality to compete, and look dangerous on the odd counter attack - but in the 21st minute a cross was played into the box from the right hand side and Kat Gow leaped up to compete with the keeper but must have caught the keeper in the side with her knee and the keeper dropped straight to the ground and required a length injury break, which unfortunately resulted in her being stretchered off and an ambulance called for what was a suspected hip dislocation. Our best wishes go to Sophie, her family and teammates and hopefully the injury isn't as bad as feared and you're back on the park soon.

The replacement keeper came in and while another football scribe noted the first four things she did were pick the ball out of the back of the net four times - it wasn't really like that - she had a few off target shots and plenty of organising of her team to do before Kat Gow struck again to double the score and to be fair no keeper in either league would have saved her shot to the tippy top of the far corner. Anita was again crucial in the buildup to the goal as she picked up Hollie's layoff and played a ball into the box to Kat's feet - who spun between two defenders and let fly her right shoot laser accurate shot. Ellerslie's next chance came from a corner - a set piece the team spends a lot of time working on and an area we found tricky when we stepped up a division so we knew it was an area we could get some reward from in this match, and that came true when our two youngest players combined for a goal, Jemma with a good corner to the back post and Marie with a strong header down into the goal, her first goal for the First Team also. The next goal was a great piece of team work as Ellerslie started with a throw in on the right and 7 passes later, including a sharp 1-2 right on the edge of the box Hollie Leona was left with a shot in the box about the penalty spot mark and she made no mistake, picking out the inside side netting on the far side of the goal. Jemma McCormick with another assist as well! With halftime approaching Waikato Uni-Col for the first time in the match looked a little overpowered, with two goals in 7 minutes and then Ellerslie struck again just 90 seconds after the previous one to make it 5-0, this goal was scored by Kim Oosterbeek who had watched her young centre back partner score earlier from a corner, this time however it wasn't a strong header, instead a set play was run and Kim had a shot from the top of the box which the keeper got a hand to but not a strong enough one to stop the ball hitting the back of the net. To the away teams credit they tried to hit back after that disappointing period and their #10 Maggie Leaver, who had wracked up the nutmegs in this game, cracked another one and got off a low powerful shot which would have asked questions of Erin in goal but an Ellerslie player blocked the shot and another player cleared away the danger. The second half threatened to be a repeat of the first but Waikato UniCol adjusted a bit and while they couldn't grab more possession they did limit our chances in the 2nd half and a combination of poor finishing and some good keeping meant the score didn't blow out, with only 1 goal being added to the halftime score. That goal came in the 76th min as Jemma and substitute Holly Marx started a move in midfield which saw Holly find Britney free in the box with a slip ball Britney intelligently squared the ball to Kat Gow who had her first attempt blocked but slammed home the loose ball for her Kat-trick. Britney had a couple of chances to put the icing on the game but a combination of a little bit of a lack of confidence infront of goal and some excellent keeping meant she couldn't add to her impressive goal total for The Ponies - she had to be happy with a very efficient 90 minutes down the right flank and two assists. It wasn't all roses for the Ponies as substitute Faith Moa took a knock to her knee prior to that last goal and with no subs remaining the Ponies played with 10 for a decent period of time, but we are all hoping the powerful fullback's injury isn't too bad and we see her back on the park soon. Ellerslie's next game in the cup will be on the weekend of the 19th and 20th of June - with the draw for the Kate Sheppard Cup being done today by New Zealand Football on twitter. Media Picks Woman of the Match: Impossible to go past Kat Gow today - three goals, plenty of shots and just an all round action filled game - honourable mentions to Jemma McCormick for a very tidy 90 mins with a couple of assists, not bad for her first start at this level.
