5 WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE

It’s yet another home game for the Women’s team this weekend, with our visitors this weekend Northern Rovers, who top the Women’s Premier League table. Ironically for the Kate Sheppard cup the following weekend the same two teams have been drawn together in the 3rd round. So this means this is the first leg of a double header (both home for Ellerslie) and Ryan and his team will be wanting to put out a better performance in this round of the league and so far in “Round 2” we have seen an improvement from the Ponies as they get key players back from injury and sickness, hopefully the upwards trend continues here. It’s also pleasing to see progress on the building site, with the changing rooms floor of the building all walled in and the concrete slab floor for the clubrooms floor being poured this week - exciting times. Lastly I just wanted to take the time to thank a few sponsors, Nadine and a team at Barfoot Ellerslie, Grant Stephens at Personalised Mortgages in Marua Road and for the Women’s Team specifically Pure Hydration and Brightshine Blinds.

Cheers Tim Adams CHAIRMAN - ELLERSLIE AFC

FRONT COVER: Legend in the club Hollie Leona is our cover star this weekend!

BACK COVER: Kim and Cat pressure a Northern Rovers player when we played them in 2021.

14 Monday Afternoon – Women’s First Team

Hamilton Wanderers and Ellerslie had already played twice before this season with Ellerslie recording wins in both of those games, with identical a 2-0 scorelines. However this is cup football and Ellerslie were wary having been knocked out by Hamilton in the last two editions of the cup. These subplots added to the intensity we normally see in an Ellerslie vs Hamilton game meant this knockout game was going to interesting to watch. In team news the visitors were missing a few players, including Helen Arjomandi and captain Maddy Ollington while the Ponies were missing Kim Oosterbeek, Cilla Fa’afua and Leigh Aitken. Tayla Hawes however was back after illness last week, and there were callups on the bench for Hollie Marx and Mia Collins. In the game it became very clear Wanderers were going to try and hit us with pace and power, as they looked to find their front three as early as possible, with the extreme pace of Lily Brazendale causing the Ponies issues. It’s a plan that might have paid dividends for the Hamilton side but Cat Pretty had other ideas as she stepped up and smashed home a flat free kick that gave Alisha Perry in goal not much chance of stopping it. Ellerslie continued to look dangerous in patches but the Wanderers team were sticking to their plan, leaving big numbers up top to support Lily, with Ayla Koopu and Anna Fullerton often staying forward while Ellerslie attacked. Probably the moment of the game came in the 36th min when Ellerslie’s Anita Trudgen was booked (for the first time in her 70+ games for the club) for a tackle that the referee deemed just outside the box, there is a video of the incident so will leave you to make up your own mind, needless to say the Ponies could feel a little fortunate that the referee didn’t award a penalty instead of a free kick. The Ponies had only 2 mins prior to this incident doubled their lead, with Marie Green putting her name on the scoresheet as she bundled home a bit of a scramble in the 6 yard box following another excellent corner from Hollie Leona. Had Wanderers been awarded the spot kick, and had they managed to score past Petra Wedlake (no easy task) from the spot then the game would have been very live and it would have been hard to predict how the remaining minutes would have played out. Ellerslie though were able to go into the break with their preferred 2-0 scoreline in place and having survived a bit of a scare they were probably thinking they just needed to do more of the same in the second half to lock this result in.

15 However in the second half Wanderers left nothing on the pitch as they threw all they had at the home side, a shot that Petra managed to tip onto the bottom of the crossbar and then watch the ball bounce clear was the closest chance, another shot that had beaten Petra but skipped the top of the crossbar also had Ponies fans holding their breath. There was also another shout for a penalty as it appeared that Kat Gow handled the ball in the box late in the second half.

However luck or whatever you want to call it was on the Ponies side – and it was great to see a third goal go in as a nice bit of play down our left flank left Britney holding the ball up, back to goal, in the box when she laid off the pass to Ella James who was having a superb game smacked a shot that snuck past the keeper, hit the post and went across goal before settling in the side netting and making the score 3-0. Wanderers like I said can be proud of their efforts, they tried everything and while it was clear the coaches and players were frustrated to come away with nothing from this game, if they can keep up that level of industry and intensity the calls will fall their way soon and points will follow you would imagine. Media’s Woman of the Match – Ella James

16 A very rare Thursday night game at Michaels Avenue drew a big crowd, with several club teams who were training, came up to watch the second half and our opposition Manurewa brought a big crowd with them as well, the rain mostly stayed away but the surface was slick from the weather during the day which made the surface prime to play on. Ellerslie had come into this game on the back of a 3-3 draw with Onehunga Mangere, but perhaps not quite finding the level of early on in the season, or perhaps other teams have improved to reduce the edge we had early in the season, regardless this was a game we wanted points in but Manurewa’s recent form, coupled with a new signing would make this tricky. Ben Fletcher continued to shuffle his team and for this game Ryan Morrow returned to the lineup, after scoring last week off the bench, which meant we fielded Hazem, Ryan and Rowan at the same time, some strike force that. Ermal who has been consistently impressive this season moved to the bench to provide second half impact. As it turned out this really was a game of two halves – the first half was fiercely contested by both teams with a lot of high energy pressing from both teams, a glaring miss from Monty Patterson and a solitary yellow card to Ellerslie’s Tom Durkin. I mention the one yellow card as the Referee was quite lenient in the opening half, perhaps too much as the players started to take a few liberties with each other, fuelled by a big crowd and tense atmosphere at 0-0 in what was an important game to both teams. The second half however – was a massive change in both score, and attitude from the referee, with 3 goals and 8 yellow cards and it could have easily been more. The drama in the second half to be fair kicked off in the 49th min when Manurewa opened the scoring, a ball down our left which bounced over a defender and left a foot race to shut down the cross, one that Ellerslie didn’t win and Mohammed Nabeel was left with a back post side foot finish to open the scoring. The goal raised the stakes but a yellow card to Monty Patterson a minute later as he collected Denny Twigg (accidentally we believe) with an elbow to the face keep the tensions high, and while Denny was on the sideline getting treated the match exploded – a tackle by Pat Grey, one of those typical Pat Grey ones where he reaches around the player to poke the ball away was called by the referee as a foul, a call Pat was not happy with – the player fouled (Jake McCoy) seemed to want to involve himself in the discussion and fronted up to Pat, as Pat went to push him away Jake grabbed Pat and tried to put him in a headlock, Pat was able to wrestle his way out but by this point most of the rest of

17 the players had converged for a bit of old fashioned push and shove. Skippers Seb Poleman and Agustin Contratti went into the scrum of players to pull their respective players out, seemingly trying to split the players. The melee seemed to calm down quite quickly as the referee carded Pat Grey for the tackle, Jake McCoy for dissent (ok) and then called the two captains over and carded them both for dissent, which at the time seemed an odd thing to do. To rub salt in the wounds the player responsible in the minds of the Ellerslie players for that incident rose at the back post from the resulting long free kick and headed home the flicked on free kick to double the visitors lead. This didn’t ease tensions as Alex Clark entered the book next as he committed a professional foul on Manurewa’s Nicolas Bobadilla, a garden variety yellow but Bobadilla was incensed by the foul and in the very next minute flew into a tackle way over the ball, which left poor Denny Twigg on the ground again. The referee found it appropriate to issue a yellow card, where a red may have been the more appropriate action. Ellerslie paid the ultimate price with 6 mins left to go as Seb Poelman already on a yellow from the incident earlier in the game received his second yellow card as he clearly denied an attacking play for Manurewa, a legitmate second yellow and not much complaint from the Ellerslie skipper. The final action of note in the game was a goal to Nicolas Bobadilla who by all accounts was lucky to still be on the pitch as he knocked in a close range effort after Jake McCoy had won yet another header at the back post. A frustrating game for Ponies players and fans who might be thinking all the major calls in the game didn’t go their way, with the irony of having a man sent off when Manurewa could have had two sent off themselves – but that’s football and a decent performance from the Ponies in terms of effort and workrate was undone by a few defensive errors and our normal clinical finishing escaping us. Media’s Man of the Match – Ryan Morrow Normally an out and out striker, Ryan was deployed in attacking midfield to try and add some variance to our attacking play, but his absolute dedication to his role on defense was what stood out, winning countless ball on the press in the midfield was great to see and raised the players around him with his energetic play.
