THE AVE - ISSUE ONE 20.06.20

ELLERSLIE AFC VS BUCKLANDS BEACH AFC

2 It almost felt like football season was never going to arrive - but finally due to everyones hard work and sacrifice we have survived the first wave of this pandemic and we can continue to enjoy sport like we did pre-covid. So let’s get to it!

Todays main fixture see’s some familiar faces with our opposition Bucklands Beach fielding at least four ex-Ellerslie players, Dan and Ben Culpan, Sohail Basha and Div Deo. Not only that but we have played Bucklands Beach a lot since they were promoted into NRFL Div 1 and yet we have yet to register official points.

It’s also a step into the unknown for our Reserves team, which has changed a lot from last season, a new bunch of players, some familiar faces and a new campaign to get excited about. We do hope you enjoy the games today, the clubrooms are open and we invite you up after the games to enjoy some post match hospitality regardless of results. We also ask that players, coaches, parents, supporters all take care with their health in regards to Covid while they are at Michaels Ave, better to be safe than sorry!!

RESULT

7 The 2020 pre-covid pre-season seems like a season ago now, however despite the rude interruption we have had a decent campaign to get us ready for what will be a short and sweet NRFL this season. The pre-covid pre-season campaign saw us take on Bucklands Beach, Birkenhead, Northland FC and finally Kiwi True Blues West Auckland FC (phew) before we headed into isolation. Victories in pre-season mean little, but it was good to see some goals being scored as we knocked a couple past Bucklands Beach and Kiwi True Blues and snuck past a stoic Northland side by a solitary goal. Birkenhead of course was a loss, as is traditional in pre-season but as a measuring stick against previous performances it was an improvement. There was a wide range of results from our lockdown activities, we tried to keep the team engaged and active with weekly video meetings and physical challenges being set - some of the team really engaged and some did their own thing, but for those who stayed active over the break they are really seeing the results now. Post-Covid we were told AFF would organise our pre-season games and there would be strict criteria on player loading - to put it politely while the idea was ok the execution was poor and muddled, something unfortunately we are getting used to seeing from our Federation. We did get a game against Waiheke under our belt which was a scrappy affair and saw the visitors win 2-1 in a game of little quality, we finished off pre-season with a very well contested Steve Knapp Cup (First Team vs Reserves) game, which will see both sides well prepared for this weekends opening fixture against Bucklands Beach.

12 Well here we finally are. After a disruption to the start of a football 2020 Diamonds Squad season like no other and some massive uncertainty of whether Seamus RYDER (captain) we'd even get a season we are FINALLY underway. If anyone ever needed convincing of how valuable team sports and sports clubs are to the health and well being of communities and individuals surely they are convinced now. A huge THANK YOU to Tim, Kelly and the rest of the Ponies administration, staff, and board for all you do to make it happen. This will be the Diamonds 6th season and we continue to go from strength to strength. We had a hugely successful season last year winning both the Northern Knock-Out Cup and the resulting Tom McNabb Trophy (all be it with a 1-1 score line....), which was worthy reward for a squad who played 25 games (or thereabouts). There were some tired and sore bodies by the end (especially the older statesmen!) However the elusive AFF Div 1 title still remained out of reach. Since our second season (2016 when we won the Div 4 title we haven't been able to seal the deal on a league title.

Michael GOULDING Andrew SUGGATE Chris THURSTON Ramesh MAVANI Nicholas (Nick) MORRISON Adam TURNER Kieran PURCELL James (Jimmy) SHEPPARD Charles WILLIAMS John CHISHOLM Samuel O'MALLEY David GLOVER William WALLACE-BLAKELY Joseph (Joe) CLARK Matthew (Matt) JO Joe (Joe) TOMPSETT Sam BAILEY William DICKINSON Robert WEARING Erik THOMSON Edwin BOSHIER Dylan THOMSON Nathan MCCULLUM Alex SZCZEPANIAK

Oh how we came close last year! We needed 6 points from our last 2 games against 2 of the 4 top teams. We won our last game against the Western Springs Diamond Geezers at their place to deny them the title and handing it to the Fencibles, but it was the game previously that was one of the cruellest in our history.

We thought we had all 3 points with a 87th minute winner, but then came the 89th minute penalty from very tired legs. Further salt into the wound when we hit their cross bar in injury time. It ended a draw and it ended our title dreams. The drama of football. Oh how we love it! So needless to say we are pretty fired up to get our hands on the league title this year. Thanks again to some strong off-season recruitment we have a strong and united squad, and thankfully for some younger members, a slightly lower median age!

13 It certainly hasn't been the smoothest start to a football season, but we've arrived and the lads are excited to finally get going. It's been a not so quiet reminder how important sport is for us as individuals and for the wider community. On the personnel front we've had a couple changes this year with some players moving on but I'm excited at the lads that have come through and have fitted right in. It was always going to be tricky considering some of those players were from our nearest rivals that actually won the league last year. I am really happy with the squad we have this year and after an indifferent 2019 that was plagued by injuries we have a realistic chance of winning the league once again. However, I've personally played in the top tier of AFF for some time now and the quality of the league improved massively last year and I expect the same again in 2020, so we will have to be at our very best and look after our bodies throughout the season as some of the lads start creeping up in age. A big thanks to the whole nation who played their role in enabling us to get this point where community sport competitions can start again. We're so damn excited to be able to get going and share a beer afterwards with our mates. Bring it on!

The glory days for the Men’s AFF Div 1 team (formally Champs, now Colts)
