5 WELCOME TO MICHAELS AVE
It’s another home matchday and this time we host Hamilton Wanderers in Women’s Premier League action, this game officially signals the beginning of the 2nd round/ series/leg of games for the Women’s First Team, with 7 games completed the Ponies sit just above Hamilton in 6th place. It would be overly dramatic to say this game is a must win, but both teams will be eyeing this game as important to kick start their seasons and push on for a spot in the top four come the end of the season. Whatever the result we welcome Hamilton Wanderers, their staff and players to Michaels Ave for the match, and of course the curtain raiser the Reserves. These two teams more often than not seem to play out thrilling games, last season a 4 -4 draw at Porritt really encapsulates what these two teams can offer - Ellerslie Reserves however will want to start moving up the table sooner rather than later if they are going to successfully defend their title. In transfer news the club is excited to see the return of Petra Buyck from the US, she will add some much needed firepower to the team, while at the other end of the field we bid farewell to Ekaterina Lieshout who has transferred to Franklin Utd. Hopefully the weather doesn’t completely pack it in and we can enjoy two good games on Sunday, and we look forward to seeing you afterwards in the clubrooms! Cheers Tim Adams CHAIRMAN - ELLERSLIE AFC

14 Kate Sheppard Cup Round Match Report
Our Womens First Team drew Papamoa FC in the first round of the Kate Sheppard Cup, and welcomed them to The Ave last weekend, while bizarrely our Men drew Papamoa FC in their respective National tournament. Unfortunately, two home games weren’t meant to be and our men travelled away to face their opponents on the same day. In somewhat of scoring drought in the NRFL Premier League, Coach Ryan Shiffman opted for an unchanged line up going into the fixture in hopes the women would be able to find their goal scoring rhythm. And that they did, the Ponies front two partnership of Britney Cunningham-Lee and Sarah Carpenter each opening their goal scoring accounts with a hat tricks in the first half. A little bit of individual magic as well as some well-worked team play saw both Ponies sharing the scoring between them, before left-back Anita Trudgen decided to get in on the goal-scoring with a nice finish off her own. The 7-0 lead allowed Shiffman to clear his bench at the break. The second half saw the goals shared around as youngster Cilla Fa’afua opening the second spell’s scoring with a very fine finish from distance. This was followed by Kim Oosterbeek with a header off a corner, capping off a perfect performance from the centre-back who was making her 50th appearance for the First Team. An unlucky own goal as well as one goal by Kat Gow saw the score climb to 11, before Ella James scored her well-deserved first and Trudgen added a second to her tally. The well-spirited game ended 13-0 to the hosts against an enthusiastic Papamoa side, who despite the scoreline, gave it their all right to the final whistle. Ellerslie will take the positives from the match and can be happy about some good passages of passing that lead to their goals. They now look to prepare for their next Premier League fixture where they will host Hamilton Wanderers. Despite getting the better of Wanderers in the first round, the blue and white army have started to find form lately so this match up will be an exciting one to watch!

16 Chatham Cup Roundup Ellerslie Men’s Team were drawn to face Papamoa FC away on the 15th of May, being drawn into this round was somewhat of a shock, seeing as we had league games scheduled for this weekend (but not for the next weekends the cup was scheduled). Despite that we were excited to play a team we had not faced before, with Papamoa’s debut in the cup coming in 1999 (when they lost 2-1 to Glenfield in Round 1), but they came back to record their best ever result in 2018 as they recorded wins against Tuakau, Waiuku and most impressively Bay Olympic before falling to winning finalists Birkenhead in the round of 16. Ellerslie have had a underwhelming recent history with the Cup, with no appearances in the round of 16 since 1998, where the Ponies beat Oratia in that round before falling to Metro in the quarter-finals. Our best ever result in the cup.
Due to a number of unavailability’s and Covid we only brought 15 players to this game, but with a team still packed with talent, with last years golden boot Ryan Morrow and skipper Seb Poelman among the players selected. The venue was well maintained, a grass field with a decent surface – the wind was extremely strong, with the venue being very open and of course close to the ocean, this did make it tricky to play, with the pitch also being on the smaller side. The locals used those things to their advantage to put us under pressure in the first half, with our mistakes and lack of accuracy assisting them in that endeavour. Papamoa’s opening goal was from a corner that the wind turned into a bit of an up and under on the edge of the box, Ellerslie failed to win the first ball and in the second phase a Papamoa player was left free to control and then volley home his shot, much to the delight of the sizeable crowd on the bank behind the goal. In all honesty Ellerslie were somewhat fortunate to go into the half only 1 goal down, with Papamoa causing us issues from set pieces and in transition as we gave the ball away regularly – conversely we had created very little threat to the home side with their 15 year old keeper not tested.
At the start of the second half, nothing looked liked it had changed – with Papamoa having a huge change within the opening couple of minutes, a shot that Kyryl saved into the post, which was then given as a goalkick surprisingly. That seems to shake Ellerslie out of their malaise as they started to control the ball and create some territory pressure, with Jack and Lex in the wingback positions bombing on and Allan causing a threat in behind. Tom Durkin playing in the advanced midfield role had threatened to cause Papamoa some issues but so far it had not eventuated but all of a sudden, three incidents involving Tom had drawn us level. Firstly Tom won a reasonably soft foul about 10 meters out-
17 side the box, with our free kick being blocked the ball falling to Tom in the box who was then brought down (no doubt about the foul here) for Ellerslie to be awarded a spot kick. Tom then stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way to level the game. Ellerslie then went on a period of dominance, for the first time in the game and could have taken the lead were it not for a combination of desperate defending, some wasteful finishing and the linesman’s flag. One of those moments in particular was frustrating as a goal for Ryan Morrow was ruled out as the AR and the Referee deemed Lex to be offside in the buildup despite Papamoa having a defender and a GK on their goalline at the time. If that call didn’t go our way the next one certainly did as former Birkenhead and Waitakere Utd player Doobie Parkinson was sent off with a straight red for complaining about a soft yellow card he had received after the referee deemed him to have interfered with an Ellerslie player trying to make a run in-behind the backline. Ellerslie initially took advantage of the numerical discrepancy as they took the lead with a very well constructed goal, which saw Tom, Ryan and then Allan share the ball to create a cross for the latter who delivered a peach of a ball for Alex Clark to slot home his 3rd goal of the season from midfield. Papamoa responded by going to their bench and bringing on a new striker – the previous player had been causing Seb and the Adam’s all sorts of problems with his hold up and physical play, but this new guy wasn’t going to do that, he was just going to run inbehind with pace and that’s what he did. The equaliser came when the ball was given away upfield with a square pass which left us short at the back and the quick Papamoa striker raced onto a through ball, Kyryl had read the danger and raced out to the edge of his box to collect the ball, but the Papamoa striker was very close and was concerning for Kyryl who was on the edge of his box, unfortunately for the Ellerslie keeper who had made some excellent saves in the first and second halves he couldn’t gather the ball cleanly and the Papamoa striker pounced on the loose ball to poke home. Ellerslie tried to rachet up the pressure but Papamoa had their tails up and won a corner via a similar passage of play to the goal – I had mentioned earlier they were threatening from set pieces and this came home to roost as they whipped a ball in near post which dipped just over Alex’s leaping effort and just short of Kyryl who had come to punch the ball. The Papamoa players delighted at taking the lead late in the game with 10 men. As the referees whistle blew for full time the home team celebrated and the Ponies wondered where this performance that was well below par (apart from a 25 min spell in the second half) had come from – back to the drawing board for the team and coaches as they look to bounce back against East Coast Bays next weekend. We also wanted to congratulate Tadiwa Masiyakurima (a Tauranga local) and Dylan Riminton on their Men’s First Team debuts – well done lads, sorry we couldn’t make it a happier event to celebrate.
